Antropologiczno-językowe wizerunki duszy w perspektywie międzykulturowej. Tom 2. Świat oczyma duszy

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Russian,Polish

"The monograph opens an interdisciplinary discourse about the notion [of the soul] and the changes it has undergone over the centuries. (…) The aim of starting this interdisciplinary and international discussion on the phenomenon of the soul was to create a common research platform where to present the positions of representatives of different milieus within the humanities. (…) The monograph features studies by dozens of authors from research centres both in Poland and abroad. (…) The subject matter of the soul, spirit and spirituality is at the heart of the humanities, constituting a point of departure for research on the immaterial dimension of reality that connects the traditional and the present-day. Reflection about the essence of humanity and man’s existence in this world and questions about a continuation of this existence after physical death have accompanied mankind forever, no matter the time or place. The belief about a post-mortem form of being is attested in funerary rites conducted by both the primordial peoples and the advanced civilizations that have expressed the questions of the condition humana as religious and philosophical systems reflected in literature, the arts, the humanities, and language” (from the introduction by E. Masłowska). The second volume of the series is comprised by works devoted to the images of the soul in literature and visual art as well as in the Christian, Indian, Chinese, African and Persian spiritualities.

Žene i procesi pomirenja u Bosni i Hercegovini: Izazov rodnim ulogama, usta(nov)ljenim narativima i performativnim praksama s osvrtom na religiju

Author(s): Zlatiborka Popov-Momčinović / Language(s): Bosnian

Author(s): Piotr Kamiński / Language(s): French

The present monograph constitutes a semiological and semiopragmatic analysis of the figure of the Wandering Jew in selected French prose works dating from the 20th century (five texts altogether). Its overriding subject-matter is to determine to what extent the conventional pre-designation is reflected in the analysed novels presenting the immortal vagrant, but also to verify if the axiom of the so-called “death of the myth” is indeed well-founded and if it is present in the contemporary French literature. In the publication, has also been indicated a net of correlations which occurs in the reading process between the analysed character and a reader. Therefore, the other essential goal of the study was to look into the narrative system so as to describe to what extent ‒ and if at all ‒ narrative procedures applied in the analysed prose works determine a potential anti-Semitic overtone and reception of the Wanderer.

Když rozpínají ruce, dotýkají se temnot: Proměny kněžské identity v prostředí českého katolicismu v 19. a 20. století

Author(s): Petr Husák / Language(s): Czech

This book examines the changes to priestly identity within Czech Catholicism in the 19th and 20th centuries on the example of three Catholic priests (Emanuel Masák, Antonín Ludvík Stříž, Dominik Pecka). The changing identity of priests in the modern age is a relevant theme in historical science and at the same time is the turbulent story of a social profession which still undoubtedly enjoyed social prestige during the mid-19th century, but which with the passing of time became a target of criticism as a symbol of backwardness for some, while for others it was a symbol of eternal order, legitimate authority, authentic service, or even martyrdom. Even in the 20th century, priestly identity continued to contain its sacral, spiritual and even overtly mystical content. As is suggested by the title, it is this which the author focuses on very thoroughly.

Hodnoty a postoje v České republice 1991–2017: Pramenná publikace European Values Study

Author(s): Ladislav Rabušic,Beatrice-Elena Chromková Manea / Language(s): Czech

The present publication Values and attitudes in the Czech Republic 1991-2017, with its content and form, outweighs the experience readers have with social science literature. The unique feature of this book is that it contains only numbers. However, these numbers are, in our opinion, very important. They indicate the development of Czech society from the early 1990s to the present in the sphere of attitudes, value orientation and preference. These numbers are also unique because they come from a series of repeated surveys that took place in the Czech Republic as part of a large-scale international comparative project - the European Values Study (EVS). The study is based on regular data collection - time intervals of about nine years, when the same research is repeated on a representative sample of the Czech population, so it gathers data that creates time series. They allow researchers and scholars to study how certain value preferences and attitudes are developing in the Czech Republic, check various assumptions and hypotheses, and draw conclusions.

Strangers Like Us. Germans in the Search for a New Identity

Author(s): Anna Kwiatkowska-Drożdż / Language(s): English

The sudden influx of more than one million refugees and migrants to Germany in late 2015 and early 2016 exacerbated the country’s social and political crisis. The latent, protracted dispute about the character of Germany as a migration state resurfaced with renewed force and will divide the German public for many years to come. The scale of this conflict resembles those with which the Germans had grappled for decades, concerning attitudes towards the past and German history, or the use of nuclear energy. There are many indications that this time the division will be longer-lasting and certainly deeper, since at the centre of the dispute is Germans’ sense of national identity. It can be assumed that of all the recent crises (starting from the financial crisis, through the Eurozone crisis and Brexit, to the war in Ukraine), it is this migration crisis that will engender the most conflicts in Europe, creating a toxic mix of identity problems. Those problems could also be dangerous for German democracy.

I vjernice i građanke

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian

The book "Both Believers and Citizens" analyses the notion of women dignity, women position in society and marriage, public life, and their peace building role, within three religious traditions; Roman-Catholic, Orthodox and Islam, with the aim of construction and reconstruction of sex stereotypes. Philosophical-theological and cultural assumptions are given center of attention for their crucial role in each of the religious tradition on defining gender identities and gender roles, and original religious texts are therefore consulted. In that way contribution of religious traditions and individual engagament to implementation of The Article Five of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and UN Resolution 1325 on women and peace and security, i.e. to modification of cultural models, social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, and practices, prejudices and customs which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes, are also analyzed. Dignity and the human rights based on it, demand not only philosophical-tehological contemplations, but legal framework and respective institutions to protect and implement them, threfore this book addresses several religious communites' activities, without entering arena of legal discussion on harmonisation or differences between CEDAW articles, UN Resolution 1325 on women and peace and security, and legislations and teachings of churches and religious communities. The book is divided into four chapters. Chapter one elaborates and criticially examines the existing national and international legal instruments for the protection of human rights of women. After the historical overview of development of notion of human rights in general and human rights of women in particular, the gap between normative and factual is identified, followed by examples of discrimination and subordination of women both in public and private life. This gap is both enabled and supported by gender sterotypes that cultural and religious tradition try to justify. In the next three chapters, origin and religious (non) justification of gender stereotypes, from the three religious communities: catholic, orthodox and Islamic, point of views are deconstructed. The same structure and methodological approach is used in each of the three chapters. Topics covered are: dignity of woman, gender relations theories, gender relations in marriage and family, gender relations in public life, and impact of gender theories on peace building and engagement of women in peace building activities are also analyzed in the light of sacred texts and various theological traditions. Such approach opens the door to understanding in what way and under which circumstances gender identities were constructed within each of the religious communities, and what are the options available for the identity "deconstruction". Interrelations between religious traditions and intertwining of philosophical, theological, and cultural impacts on gender stereotypes formation are elaborated. What makes this reading unique when compared with similar studies analyzing relation between religious communities and human rights of women is more than one thing. First of all, it doesn't solely analyze teachings or legal regulations of particular religious communities but institutions and various initiatives lounged by religious communities in order to promote human rights of women. Secondly, from the religious point of view numerous issues of relevance for human rights of women are also considered: recognition of dignity and its implementation in both public and private sphere. Thirdly, attitudes of not one, but all three dominant religious communities in this geographic region - Bosnia and Herzegovina, are examined. Although relations of Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Islam towards human rights of women are treated separately, respecting the specificity of each religious tradition, including language, corresponding structure of work and methodology enable detection of common attitudes and influences. The fundamental aim of this work was to illustrate possibilities for establishing dialogue between civil and religious sector, and for reconciliation of religious and secular concept of human rights in regard to acknowledgment and implementation of human rights of women, as a prerequisite for establishment of more just gender relations in all aspects of life.

Aus dem evangelischen Pfarrhaus in Lodz und Umgebung: Die Literatur der evangelisch-augsburgischen Dichterpfarrer 1839-1939. Eine kommentierte Anthologie

Author(s): Monika Kucner / Language(s): German

Within several dozen years, a society with extreme social contrasts emerged in Lodz, in which the ethnically foreign (German and Jewish) bourgeoisie played the leading role. Two strata dominated in the city, the aforementioned bourgeoisie and the workers. Somewhere on the fringes of society there were still a limited number of intelligentsia. The middle class, which included petty industrialists, civil servants and representatives of the so-called liberal professions such as doctors, teachers, journalists, lawyers and writers, also existed to a small extent. But Lodz needed such people who would have been an important carrier of social development and a stabilizing force. This group includes people who care about the spiritual and moral development of society. Their role is based on upholding culture, tradition and beliefs and instilling ethical values. Łódź society growing up under the conditions of capitalism, where money was the most important value, needed special spiritual care. Because of this, the clergy played an important role in the city. They should primarily spread the faith in society and care for the salvation of the soul of the population. The Lodz clergy not only taught the faith or played the role of moral authority, they often acted as mediators, educators in the cultural sphere. They often took up pen to put their thoughts on paper. They wrote literary and journalistic texts in German or Polish and published them in local newspapers and magazines or, more rarely, in book form. Journalistic and literary writing was particularly popular with Lutheran clergy. They made it possible to develop an aesthetic feeling in a form other than just the Sunday sermon, to awaken a taste for the beautiful in art, and to lead the faithful to assimilate a set of sensual and spiritual values of the Evangelical-Augsburg faith. This anthology presents a small part of a more extensive body of writing by Evangelical-Augsburg pastors from Lodz and the surrounding area from 1839 to 1939. The main part of the volume is the collection of texts by German-speaking poet pastors, including Philipp Kreutz, Rudolf Gundlach and August Hermann Müller. The publication is an anthology with comments, i.e. a collection of texts with a detailed commentary on the history of the city and the development of Evangelical-Augsburg parishes in Lodz and the surrounding area in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Faithful and the Reasonable: Chapters on Ecological Foolishness

Author(s): Hana Librová,Vojtěch Pelikán,Lucie Galčanová Batista,Lukáš Kala / Language(s): English

This book follows the successful titles “The Colourful and the Green: Chapters on Voluntary Simplicity” and “The Half-Hearted and the Hesitant: Chapters on Ecological Luxury.” The author poses the question of why, at a time of continuing devastation of nature, people’s interest in nature conservation has been decreasing. Are the media to blame or is our numbness toward ecological problems rooted in our mental makeup that tends to supress unpleasant realities? The author also wants to find out why some people have remained faithful to nature. To get to the answers, she applies sociological, philosophical, psychological, and theological perspectives. An unexpected question that may surprise some readers then becomes: Actually, why should we protect nature when it can take care of itself? It is not weak; it is strong and cruel. Librová’s students Vojtěch Pelikán, Lucie Galčanová, and Lukáš Kala interview the children of “the Colourful,” too: have they inherited their parents’ modest lifestyle?
