Физичка активност и предање Цркве: Прилог иницијативи да се у богословије уведе редован предмет физичког васпитања

Author(s): Petar Bogdanović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2019

The need for physical education in secondary schools is both civilisational and social norm. The normative character rests on the scientifically proven benefits for biopsychosocial development, health, and social life, but as well on the fact that the need for physical activity is absolutely inherent in human nature. Being engaged in physical activity, especially for the purpose of physical health, has always been part of the ascetic tradition of the Church. However, there occasionally emerged teachings, unknown to the original tradition, which regarded ascetic virtue as struggle against body and physicality. Pointing out to the Eucharistic regard for the body as the gift of God, in this paper I will attempt to show that there is actual and imperative need for the students at Orthodox Seminaries to be provided with Physical Education classes, bearing in mind the modern way of living in which spending time in front of the computer and in a sedentary position is predominant.

Финансиране на църковните дейности

Финансиране на църковните дейности

Author(s): Petkan Iliev / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 5/2019

The typology of "church-state" relationships is expressed in two basic approaches to religious activities: at the first, a given church / confession, religion is legally proclaimed by the state as sole or domineering, and the religion concerned is recognized as official. In this case, the official church is a monopolist in the religious services market; with the second approach, the state admits multi-contingency, ie. diversity of religions in society without official support of any of them, which can be perceived not as perfect competition but as monopolistic competition. This largely reflects on the ways in which the activities of religious institutions are financed through the so-called church tax (European practice) or the granting of tax incentives / reliefs (US practice), which is analyzed in this report.

Флоровский против Тойнби: экуменический контекст критики теории цивилизаций

Author(s): Lepeshkin Yuvenaly,Sergey Mihailovich Usmanov / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2021

The subject of this research is very relevant in the context of spiritual and socio-political contradictions of the modern world. The problems of civilization in the context of ecumenical dialogue are still poorly studied. On the basis of the prosopographic method and civilizational approach, the authors study Archpriest George Florovsky’s critical analysis of the historical and cultural concept of Arnold Joseph Toynbee. The authors focus on Father George’s speech at an ecumenical meeting in Greece in 1959, as well as his posthumously published article on major ecumenical thinkers. The authors elaborate on Father George’s main arguments in his criticism of Toynbee’s concept. The main motives and concepts of this critical analysis (“rejudices of the West”, Christian understanding of history, the need for an ecumenical meeting) are highlighted. The authors express their attitude to Father George’s critical considerations. In this regard, they recognize the solidity and significance of the civilizational research of the outstanding English historian of the twentieth century, Arnold Joseph Toynbee.

Хамаил литовско-польско-белорусских татар из частной коллекции: филолого-текстологический анализ

Author(s): Galina Mishkinene / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2017

The subject of this article is a manuscript belonging to the Lithuanian-Polish-Belarussian Tatars, the chamaił (a Tatar prayer book), currently in the custody of a Lithuanian state institution. Its watermarks indicate that it was created in 1896. Modern scholars have very limited access to manuscripts kept in private hands. For this reason they have been the least researched so far. This may be the case of the writings of the Lithuanian-Polish-Belarussian Tatars. For this reason the subject of this article may be regarded as part of a private collection, too. The author of the article performs a textual and philological analysis of the said manuscript, describes its content and graphical and orthographical characteristics.

Характеристики на средновековните ислямски затвори на остров Сицилия (IX – XI век)

Author(s): Desislava Vladimirova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 2/2019

The medieval prisons are part of the Islamic governing system as in the Near East as in the Magreb. The sources about their organization and working methods are rare and straggling. Whatever, medieval Islamic prisons deserve an attention because they are connected with the general institutional environment in the Islamic lands. This article surveys the Islamic prisons in Sicily in the period 9th-11th century. It begins with a review of the emergence of the first Islamic prisons. This information serves as both forming initial impressions and a basis of the subsequent analysis. An important contribution of the article is the collected information from different by language, type and time historical sources. Their careful readings, coupled with a compare analysis, allow us to draw conclusions about the characteristics and location of the medieval Sicilian prisons. Comparison with the prisons in the other Islamic lands over the same historical period shows us common features. This makes it possible to conclude that the penal institutions on the island follow and work on a well-established model.

Храми Луганщини: історико-культурний контекст і актуальність дослідження

Author(s): Olga Olegivna Smolina / Language(s): Ukrainian / Issue: 40/2018

The purpose of the article is to study the degree of research of Orthodox temple architectural complexes on the territory of the modern Lugansk region. The methodology is based on a comparative-analytical approach using the method of systematisation. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that an analysis of the modern scientific literature on the Orthodox churches in Lugansk region was carried out for the first time. Is showed that the available few editions do not allow us to draw a complete picture of the Orthodox church building development in the Lugansk region, of its connection with the regional culture, about artistic and stylistic preferences in the cult architecture and its figurative and aesthetic aspects. Conclusions: it has been established that publications of catalogue type prevail on this topic, which indicates the primary stage of identification and accumulation of material, at the stage of which the process of investigating the temples of Lugansk region is located. Some publications contain erroneous data, which is quite understandable by the disparity of the empirical material and its insufficient research. If, in spite of the fragmentation and disunity of the material in general, the history of some temples of the region is still fixed in scientific publications, reference books, periodicals, but the architectural and stylistic aspect of the Luhansk region temples has practically remained beyond the scope of scientific interest. To preserve the national cultural heritage, historical and cultural studies and art history studies of the Orthodox religious architecture of the Lugansk region are necessary for the entire period of its existence.

Црква у савременом секуларном српском друштву

Црква у савременом секуларном српском друштву

Author(s): Aleksandar Đakovac / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2015

Secularity is one of the basic postulates of contemporary democratic societies. The consensus regarding the essential determination of this conception, or the final implications it has on social relationship, still does not exist in theory nor in practice. Although the notion of secularism is not fully elaborated or defined, modern society is, not without reason, taken to be post-secular. The relationship between churches and religious communities is particularly burdened with misunderstanding in post-communist countries including Serbia, due to twofold tendencies which occur in those countries. Since both churches and religion communities were oppressed for decades, the downfall of communist dictatorship was followed by an understandable need for religion to assume its position in society. There are a lot of contrary opinions and practices regarding the position of religion. The aim of this article is to point out existing problems and to give solutions for their overcoming in the future.

Църквата „Св. Антоний“ в Мелник – чудотворни обекти и ритуални практики

Author(s): Yana Gergova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/2020

Anthony is a highly honoured saint, considered to be a patron and a defender of various diseases. The church “St. Anthony” in the smallest town in Bulgaria – Melnik – is known exactly for its healing aspect and can be identified as one of the most sacred cult sites in the surroundings, connected with numerous stories of miracles, healings, interesting and rare ritual practices. The modern state and functioning of the church is a complex of different components that build the role and importance of the cult site as a very attractive place for pilgrimage and healing. Besides of the cult of the patron itself, these components include also various miraculous objects, iconographic features, the location of the church, and characteristic stories of miracles, media, and personal representations and interpretations. In this article, I will examine the cult of St. Anthony in the city and church dedicated to him through the prism of two basic elements – miraculous objects or other ones in the church area and beliefs and ritual practices related to them. It is precisely the connection between the different components of the cult site, combining diverse objects of pilgrimage, honoring, and usage, that creates a truly unique context in which this church, the only one in the country until recently dedicated to the St. Anthony, exists. The analysis is based on observations from conducted fieldwork studies in Melnik and bibliographic and online surveys in the period 2016–2018.

Църковният събор от 1360 г. в Търново и българо-еврейският религиозен конфликт от 50-те години на XIV век

Author(s): Hristo Saldzhiev / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2021

The article focuses on problems relating to the Jewish community’s origin in medieval Tarnovo, the reasons that provoked the Bulgarian-Jewish conflict from the 1350ies and its aftermaths. The hypothesis that Tarnovo Jews originated from Byzantine and appeared in medieval Bulgarian capital at the end of the 12th century as manufacturers of silk is proposed. The religious clash from the 1350ies is ascribed to the influence exerted by some Talmudic anti-Christian texts on the local Jewish community, to the broken inner status-quo between Christians and Jews after the second marriage of the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Alexander and to the reactions of part of the Christian population against the breach of this status-quo.
