‘An inside job’: An autobiographical account of desistance

Author(s): Wayne Hart,Deirdre Healy / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2018

Various theories have been put forward to explain the processes underpinning desistance from crime. To provide additional insights into this phenomenon, this article presents an autobiographical account of one man’s journey towards a crime-free life. The narrative reveals a change process that is at once personal and universal, and describes the external forces that shaped his pathway to desistance as well as his experiences of personal fortitude and agency. In addition, it highlights the role of probation supervision as a catalyst for change. The autobiographical account is accompanied by a reflective academic commentary that situates these personal life experiences within the wider desistance literature. While the reader may view the autobiographical tone of this article as subjective, it should be noted that the account is not simply a re-telling of an individual life story but offers a critical appraisal of existing knowledge viewed through the lens of one person’s journey towards desistance.

“You’ll never stand-alone”: Electronic monitoring in Germany

Author(s): Frieder Dünkel,Christoph Thiele,Judith Treig / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2017

Electronic monitoring (EM) in Germany is used only exceptionally in cases of highrisk offenders released from prison after fully having served a prison sentence or after release from the preventive detention measure (added to a prison sentence in cases of “dangerous” violent or sex offenders). About 70 cases on a daily total of more than 36,000 supervision of conduct cases are under global positioning system (GPS)-EM. Only in one federal state (Hesse) EM on radio frequency technology is also used to avoid pretrial detention or in regular probation/parole cases. Numbers remain very low also in this context. EM is always combined with a probation or supervision of conduct order, which means that it is embedded in the rehabilitative work of the probation services. The German judiciary and crime policy are very reluctant to expand EM, as there is no pressure from the prison system (no overcrowding) and the “ordinary” probation service (without EM) works quite efficiently.

„Цаката била в кацата…“ или как градският шлагер преживя социализма

Author(s): Anton Angelov / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2020

Between the mid-1940s and the late 1950s the centralization and ideologization of culture marginalized the schlager-song practice from pre-socialist times. Performing and listening to this musical genre was recognized by the authorities as a relic of the bourgeois past and was at the same time regarded as non-aesthetic by the professional composers. In the 1960s the generational change and the penetration of the new modern Western popular culture in Bulgaria altered the focus of the institutions of the regime. The old-fashioned pre-war schlager lost its political incorrectness to a significant extent and gradually became a convenient instrument in the hands of the institutions thus allowing to cover the attention of the elderly generations.

Фестивалите за „тежка“ музика между почитателите и местната общност: случаят „Каварна“

Author(s): Iliyana Choevska / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 3/2018

The article looks into the festivals for “heavy” music in Bulgaria. The primary hypothesis, proven by the study, is that such events assist in the development of the settlements in which they are hosted, and benefit their residents in many fields,in particular tourism and local economy. The article focuses on the main “actors“ –the fans and the local community, based on a particular case. The festival “Kavarna rock“ is chosen as an example of a most successful event of this genre in our country, with 11 years of history. The study of the opinions of the fans and the residents, the organization and the evolution of the festival over the years of its life time, the issues that have had to be resolved, add up to a comprehensive picture of such events in our country. Even though the event is no longer being organized, the results achieved are an example of development of an alternative form of tourism in our country, which is still underdeveloped.

Фокус групата като метод при оценяване на приложението на Закона за защита от домашно насилие

Author(s): Georgi Dimitrov / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/2019

Focus groups are appropriate method for studying the practices of preventing domestic violence at a regional level. The method provides a reflexive space for identification of collective insights in the course of group interactions and preservation and registration of the implicit individual preferences of participants in the group discussion. Focus groups are organized in order to study the relationships of the target groups with the institutions in Razgrad district and the extent of their involvement in the process of prevention of domestic violence. Sharing of own experiences and ideas and the interactive comparison of the viewpoints of the participants that arise during group interactions in thematic focus groups, provide a more complete picture of the phenomena studied. The dynamics of symbolic interactions and the social exchange of information in the group process of the focus group reveals additional, subdivided views on the content and validity of the empirical data collected by this method. The focus groups do not apply the survey-specific pressures for a structured response to the moderator’s questions, which allows a higher level of authentic sharing and understanding of the experiences, attitudes, practices and relationships presented.

Форми и политически инструменти за стратегическо направляване на образователни институции и спортни организации

Author(s): Ivan Sandanski / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 6/2017

These instigate a process of institutionalization the actions and behaviours of local schools, kindergartens, sport clubs, youth organisations, and various social groups participating in DPIST funded or supported projects and sport initiatives. Four primary modes of strategic steering are identified including coercion, voluntarism, targeting and framework regulation. The process of steering collective actions, policies and resources is premised on creating a system of institutionalized rules. In fact, such a process takes hybrid forms. The key mechanism for achieving both the strategic and sport policy intentions of Sofia municipality has been the machinery of project management. It is also demonstrated that the pursuit of the new promoted vision envisaging Sofia as a vibrant city of juvenile, active and innovative people where sport, in combination with education, volunteering and entrepreneurship, is seen as the key means and agent of social change, however, requires a proactive forward thinking and strategic approach. It is directed towards pursuing some future, but still unknown desired state in terms of necessary social time, space and projection. Due to this uncertainty Sofia municipality reasonably has relied on a set of already tested in the social practice sources of reasoning and mechanisms of cognitive knowledge and social interventions.

ФРАГМЕНТИ СЛИКЕ ЕВРОПСКЕ МИГРАНТСКЕ КРИЗЕ У ДНЕВНОЈ ШТАМПИ СРБИЈЕ

Author(s): Zoran B. Jevtović,Predrag Bajić / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 4/2019

Although the European migrant crisis has not finished, it is rarely on the front pages, with only occasional reminders that it is still present. In this way, the stories of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers remained out of public focus, although they were numerous in time when the crisis was at its peak. By using quantitative and qualitative content analysis, the authors researched the ways in which migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are highlighted as individuals on the front pages of Serbian daily newspapers (Politika, Danas, Večernje novosti, Blic, Kurir, Alo and Informer) between the beginning of 2015 and the end of the first half of 2018, as well as how the image about them in this context was upgraded, confirmed or changed. During the research, two directions were clearly noticed - indicating a humanitarian character on the one hand and a security aspect on the other. The results also point to the difference between the dominant narratives in the tabloids and in the quality press. Unlike the sensationalist discourse in tabloids, mixed with fear and panic, or a quick excitement of the readers, quality press is developing the human aspect of the migrant crisis, with elements of critical research.

Author(s): Marina Aleksandrovna Kashina,Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Vasilenko / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2019

The authors analyze the possibilities of using the synergistic potential of the society which is related to the optimization of gender relations in the society and equalization of the resource availability for the gender groups. The notion of a gender resource is presented as a possibility of social changes which is derived from the inclusion of the task of population’s biological and social reproduction optimization in the activities of the public administration bodies. In the article two forms of using the gender resource are considered. The first form is an extensive (wasteful) one. It means the policy of gender relations conservation and the promotion of traditional gender norms. The second form is could be called intensive (increasing). In this case the government will modernize the gender relations and norms. The article reveals the fractal nature of gender relations in the society, the connection of fractals of gender relations, roles and statuses of gender groups with the nature of the use of the gender resource by the public administration.

Функционално оценяване на потребностите и практически техники за успешното приобщаване на децата с увреден слух в общообразователната среда

Author(s): Neda Balkanska / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 8/2018

The ways of integration of children with hearing impairment in mainstream schools are the object of discussion in this article. The main thesis advocated in the content is the importance of adequate needs assessment of hearing-impaired children, the application of an individual approach in education that is oriented not only to children with hearing impairment but also to all children with SEN, as well and to all students in the class. The theory of multiple intelligence offers a solid argument in this direction regarding registering the learning style for each child and his/her inclusion in structured group activities that also stimulate social integration.
