“‘Remember Jenny’: Representation of the Fallen Woman Through Male Gaze in Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s ‘Jenny’”

“‘Remember Jenny’: Representation of the Fallen Woman Through Male Gaze in Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s ‘Jenny’”

Author(s): Merve Sari / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2018

Dante Gabriel Rossetti started working on his poem “Jenny” almost a decade earlier than his painting, Found. Although both of his works are about the issue of the fallen woman, “Jenny” particularly stands out as it reflects the poet’s conflicting attitude towards the issue of the fallen woman which sympathises and condemns the fallen woman at the same time and unravels the male hypocrisy that was prevalent during the Victorian Age. Caught in the middle between a wish to represent the condition of the fallen woman and fearful of Victorian outcries of censorship, Rossetti reduced Jenny to an object of pure speculation with her silence and inaction. Subjecting Jenny to the speculations of the male gaze and authorial power throughout the poem, Rossetti shows that his poetic persona is not actually that different from the conventional representatives of patriarchy. Hence, the aim of this study is to discuss the problematic stance of Rossetti’s poetic persona, who, despite the fact that he continuously emphasises his disinterest in sensual delights and expects praise in return, is yet typically reflective of Victorian patriarchal hypocrisy with his relentless comparisons initially between himself and Jenny and then his cousin Nell and Jenny.

“Meshari” i Gjon Buzukut, çelës për leximin e teksteve biblike në gjuhën shqipe

Author(s): Evalda Pagi / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 03-04/2015

“Missel” (Meshari) of Gjon Buzuku, a key for the reading of biblic texts in Albanian languageThe “Missal” of Gjon Buzuku has attracted the attention of many researchers because of its special structure and content. One of the most important issues immediately related with this book remains the dissimilar nature of the texts that comprise it, as well as the visible linguistic diversity that can be traced in the different parts of the book itself. The tradition of the studies about this book has consistently recorded a number of achievements that have been made concrete in in-depth research work, but also in philological and critical publications that have enabled an easier approach to study the content and to track down the most important features of his texts construction.

Author(s): Irina Glukhova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

The purpose of this article is to give an idea about contemporary Daseinsanalysis as it wasdeveloped by Ph.D. Alice Holzhey, a Swiss Daseinsanalyst and psychoanalyst, chairman of the Swiss Society for Daseinsanalysis and Hermeneutic Anthropology, and a student of Medard Boss. One of the main features of Holzhey’s approach, which distinguishes it from other schools of Daseinsanalysis, including the approach of Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss, is the return to Freud’s psychoanalysis and its new interpretation as, essentially, a hermeneutic orientation aiming at clarification of the meaning of seemingly meaningless symptoms. Referring to Heidegger’searly philosophy, mainly to his Being and Time, Holzhey creatively compares his philosophical anthropology to Freud’s idea that mental suffering always has a hidden – unconscious – meaning.Drawing on three rules for analytical work proposed by Freud – the rule of free associations, the rule of defocused listening and the rule of abstinence – Holzhey radically revises the conceptual foundation of analytic interpretations. Where the classic Freudian psychoanalyst sees the problemsi n psychosexual development, Holzhey talks about a particular sensitivity (Hellhörigkeit) to the“ontological inclusions” in everyday ontic events. Where it was a mental illness, which was defined as a pathological deviation from a healthy “norm”, Alice Holzhey saw “philosophers in spite of themselves” – people suffering from having the gift of a particular sensitivity to the existential givens of their own being. The possibility to use this method to consider patients’ problems in psychotherapy and psychological counseling – including different types and schools of counseling –makes Holzhey’s approach of practical use in a variety of therapeutic areas and for different issues. This article is based on personal meetings and conversations, participation in Alice Holzhey’s seminars, as well as on the work on the author’s translation of Holzhey’s book, Suffering from One’s Own Being.

„[…] nawet zabić się nie mogę, bo chcę widzieć”. O spojrzeniu przez Łzy

Author(s): Beata Łazarz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 5/2017

Reading Grzegorz Strumyk’s novel Łzy [Tears], Łazarz examines the relationship between the words and images that are called up in the reader’s imagination. Reading the novel as an account of the difficult journey towards seeing, Łazarz describes how it traces a path towards a new recognition of suppressed images and towards expressing those images with words; this expression allows further images to emerge, along with their related emotions. The goal of the images that Strumyk creates is not so much a realistic description of the world but a rendering of the protagonists’ emotions and experiences – conscious and unconscious. Łazarz pays particular attention to the analysis of Strumyk’s symbolic use of shapes and colours.

„Bezstronny obserwator” Adama Smitha a neutralne kryteria oceny w etyce społecznej

Author(s): Cezary Kalita / Language(s): Polish Issue: 36/2016

Ethical theory for Adam Smith is first of all the basic mechanism of social controls. Going out from decisions of the matter of the moral feelings, which the ‘sympathy’ states the foundation; it tries to work out the neutral criteria of ethical opinions introducing the ‘impartial spectator’ figure. Superiority of this category in relation to John Rawls ‘veil of ignorance’ depends on this, that the Smith places his philosophical theory in the strong empirical context (the kind of sociological philosophy). Social ethicist is the base to build more folded regulators of community life, or social, such as economy and politics. The neutral criteria of ethical opinions are the foundation of different derivative social workings (economy, politics).

Author(s): Mykola Grigorovich Levchenko,Anatolii Fedorovich Forostian,Sergii Vladimirovich Kuznetsov / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2021

The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of the integration of contemporary art into the cultural space of the regions of Ukraine. Methodology. The general scientific methodology was widely used in the research, namely structural-functional, systemic, hermeneutic, axiological, semiotic research methods. The use of elements of structural-functional analysis was associated with the consideration of the object of study as a holistic system in which each element has its place and function in the structure. The scientific novelty of the proposed study is that this issue is not sufficiently covered by Ukrainian scientists and requires a thorough study. Conclusions. The challenge of modernity in Ukrainian society is particularly acute for the search for unifying principles that could become the basis for cohesion and fruitful interaction of different local (regional) cultures. It has been proven that the combination of cultural meanings and values inherent in each of them gives birth to a single field of cultural space. Evidence of the objectivity of its existence is the tendencies to convergence and integration of cultures due to the impact of globalization. Culture is the container of the most stable systems of socio-cultural meanings, universal values, acts as a form of existence and communication of people of different - past, present, and future - cultures, in other words, a form of dialogue and intergeneration of cultures. It is important to note that in the common cultural space are preserved only those values and ideals of local cultures that contribute to the development of society as a whole. The role of contemporary art in the peculiarities of the integration of contemporary art into the cultural space of the regions of Ukraine is assessed. It is noted that the main mission of cultural policy should be the spread of cultural norms, universal and national social ideals, as well as creating conditions for the full and harmonious development of the individual through preservation and involvement of cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), traditions and their actualization in modern life. Contemporary art is of particular importance in the implementation of this problem, and the cultural landscape is a physical and mental expression of the organization of space by man. It allows you to consider the cultural space locally, on the example of a particular region, in its relationship with a single culture. Thus, we can talk about the cultural landscape of the region, region, city, as well as an individual group or other community.

Author(s): Anastasia Igorivna Kravchenko / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2017

The purpose. The article is devoted to the theoretical crystallization of methodology and the discovery of the semiological significance of culturological art criticism in the complex study of the chamber art of Ukraine. Methodology. Methods of historiographic, chronological analysis and interdisciplinary approach have been applied. Scientific novelty consists in the categorical crystallization of the methodological foundations of culturological art criticism and the definition of perspective tasks of understanding the chamber art of Ukraine in the discourse of the semiotic paradigm of culture of late 20th and early 21st centuries. Conclusions. The analysis of the special literature reveals the importance of comprehension the chamber art in an integrated way based on the strategy of culturological art criticism, which includes the integration of historical-style musicological analysis and systemic-semiotic, hermeneutic methodological approaches of a wide range, namely, the application of research instruments of the philosophy of music, musical textology, semiotics, aesthetics, intermedial theory and cultural hermeneutics. Taken together, this lays the foundation for a new cultural doctrine of contemporary musicology that leads to a comprehension of the historical, cultural, semiotic and intermedial problems of chamber art in the context of the universalistic aspects of postmodern culture. From this perspective, the need for aesthetic, philosophical and cultural studies of the chamber art of Ukraine in terms of solving the following urgent problems: the definition of the characteristics of the sign-intonation traditions of the chamber ensemble and the disclosure of their semiotic significance in the development of the musical culture of Ukraine in the postmodern era; the study of the intertextual and intermedial aspects of logic and the semiology of the creative process; the formation of the aesthetic-hermeneutic concept of modern chamber performance in the semiotic context of a new system of artistic communication based on interactivity and intermediality.

Author(s): Yurii Boreiko / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 1/2020

The purpose of the article is to determine the semantic potential of interpreting a cultural event in contemporary Ukrainian society in conditions of social change, taking into account the ability of socio-cultural narratives to construct different versions of perception of reality. The methodology is based on the use of hermeneutic interpretation methods (to clarify the meanings and significance of a cultural event), comparative analysis (to compare the content and context of the creation of socio-cultural narratives), structural and functional method (to reveal the significance of a cultural event in the functioning of social institutions). The scientific novelty of the results obtained is to identify the consequences of the cultural events interpretations' conflict in Ukrainian society, which is accompanied by inadequate symbolization of the description of events, the selectivity of concepts, combinations of statements, confrontation of concepts engaged by ideological settings, own or corporate interests of interpreters. Conclusions. In conditions of social upheaval, cultural events become the point of various interpretations intersection. The socio-cultural narrative is aimed not only at the search and definition of meanings, the construction of the subjects' behavior scenarios, but also has a decisive influence on the vector of society development, the social discourse formation. Since every socio-cultural narrative claims to be exceptional, including the belief in the correctness of its own version of the understanding of the events, the narratives' collision and their interpretations, which becomes a conflict of consciousness and memory of different generations or worldviews representatives, is inevitable.

Author(s): Aleksey Panteleev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2020

The article deals with the early Christian literature of the 2nd–3rd centuries in the context of the Second Sophistic. Famous sophists and Christian intellectuals were contemporaries, and they were educated by the same teachers. The focus of the article is on such themes as the claims of apologists for the status of ambassadors to the Roman emperors, the desire to demonstrate their education and include Christianity in the mainstream of development of ancient culture, an appeal to Greek history. When Christians tried to prove the truth of their views on the world and the deity and to demon-strate the superiority of their culture and their own tradition, they often used ideas and methods borrowed from the arsenal of Second sophistic.

Author(s): Yvanka Raynova / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The problem of the Other, which has a long history and tradition in continental philosophy, has been increasingly articulated in recent years in the context of the problems of recognition, and hence of the rights of aliens in contemporary Europe, and the problems related to multiculturalism and intercultural discourse. Even before 2015, when the great wave of refugees flooded Europe, numerous philosophical discussions unfolded on these topics. The purpose of this article is, on the one hand, to present some of the most important aspects of the debates that took place between some prominent representatives of contemporary philosophical thought, namely - the debates between Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor, Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, Paul Ricoeur and Axel Honneth, as well as the discussion between Christoph Menke, Georg Lohmann and Dieter Thomä in the "Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie", and on the other hand to explore the various attempts of conceptualization of these problems by Jean Baudrillard, Bernard Waldefels and Raúl Fornet-Betancourt. The phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis of the arguments of these different au-thors allows us to draw certain conclusions and to suggest possible directions for future resolutions on these conflictual issues. The main thesis defended here is that the problem of the foreign and the aliens (foreigners) cannot be solved if it is detached from the context of the problems of recognition, translation and intercultural or multicultural dialogue.

Author(s): Iliana Ilieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

This article aims to analyze the beginning of the transition from logos to myth. To incorporate the religious into his Enlightenment philosophical system, Schelling presents a reconstruction of myth. The conceptions of the religious consciousness of the Self from antiquity as presented. The myth embodies cultural reality and the history of self-consciousness, an idea that was later considered by Mircea Eliade. Myths evolve in parallel with human evolution. The need for the development of abstract thinking and the complex social environment presuppose the new mythology. Christianity in history appears as part of the mechanism of human development, which generally symbolizes the transition from mythology to Christianity. Theology must abstract mythologies from the purely divine, but together they participate in the formation of human consciousness.

The analysis of causality in Schopenhauer’s conceptualization of the representative model of knowledge presupposes the mentioning of two significant representatives of the Scottish reaction against Hume’s skepticism, namely Thomas Reid and Thomas Brown. The goal of this paper is to explicate some concrete ideas from both of their theoretical systems in relation to the critique of Hume’s notion of causality and later their interpretation in Schopenhauer’s philosophy.

Author(s): Časlav D. Koprivica / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 32/2016

In the following article we are trying to illuminate the question of secret as inseparable from the problem of knowledge and essence. In doing so it is not about the philosophical perspective on the problem secret, but it turns out, that the issue is not only tantamount to philosophy, but above all that the philosophical perspective supplies us with profound insight into the problem. As two major philosophical paradigms problem mystery allocated to Platonism and enlightenment, not because they are the most recognizable when it comes to understanding this issue in the course of history of philosophy, but, on the contrary, because they stay for typological characteristic, mutually disputing positions on the topic.

Author(s): Igor’ A. Vinogradov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2020

The article touches upon the analysis of the historical and literary circumstances of the appearance of one of the numerous author’s comments by Gogol on the comedian “The Government Inspector”, such as the article “An Prenotification for those who would like to stage “The Government Inspector” as it should be”. A whole number of facts indicate that the origin of the “Prenotification…” is related to the history of the creation by Gogol of the second edition of “The Government Inspector” in late December 1840 — February 1841. Together with the new edition, Gogol, unsatisfied with the staging of his comedy in St. Petersburg and Moscow theatres, first of all with the impersonation of Khlestakov, conceived a new presentation of “The Government Inspector”, believing that the revised edition would contribute to the theatrical updating of the play — performed “as it should be”. The text of the “Prenotice…” precedes the creation of those fragments of “The Government Inspector” that Gogol sent for the new edition of the play in spring 1841 from Rome to Moscow for M. P. Pogodin and S. T. Aksakov and is a kind of a test experiment, a “rough draft” for “An excerpt from a letter written by the author shortly after the first presentation of “The Government Inspector” to one writer”, sent at that time to Aksakov, and simultaneously it is a preliminary description for subsequent explanations of the “silent scene” of “The Government Inspector” in the text of the very comedy. In addition, there is a connection between the “Prenotification…” with drawings made by the artist A. A. Ivanov for the same final scene of “The Government Inspector”, which were created during the author’s reading of the comedy in Rome in February 1841. Thus, it is established that the “Prenotification for those who would like to play “The Government Inspector” properly was written not in the autumn 1846, as it is common to think, but five and a half years earlier, in early 1841. It is an opening article in the manuscript for the second edition of “The Government Inspector” in 1841, instead of which Gogol published here an accompanying article “An excerpt from a letter written by the author shortly after the first presentation of “The Government Inspector” to one writer”. The study allows us to conclude that Gogol’s interpretations are deeply organic to the original religious concept of comedy. The plot stem of the “The Government Inspector” is the “thunderstorm” of a distant government law, and of the even more inevitable Last Judgment. The “Prenotification…” addressed to the actors, and containing an appeal to take seriously and conscientiously the performance of the roles they were cast in, to pay special attention to the final scene, is an important component of Gogol’s strategy to bring back to his play the meanings lost due to inept staging.

Author(s): Margarita A. Korzo / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2017

The history of the ascetic works composed by the Flemish Jesuit Franz Coster (1531–1619) and their translations into Polish and “prosta mova” are considered as an interesting example of the 17th-century literary contacts in Europe and an example of the spread of Catholic works among adherents of Orthodoxy. Coster’s Bulla super forma iuramenti professionis fidei (1576) was originally intended to members of the Catholic Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Cologne. Two Polish-language reversed editions entitled Skarb duszny (1582 and 1594) served as a source of a concise text of admonition written in “prosta mova” to the confession Nauka i priklady, which can be found in two editions of the 17th-century Orthodox Vilna’s Poluustav: ca. 1637–1640 and ca. 1643–1644. The Polish translation later was taken as a basis for drawing up a manual of confession Nauka o tainie svyatogo pokayaniya (1671) published in the Kiev Monastery of the Caves. The question of the translator from Latin into Polish as well as the translator from Polish into “prosta mova” remains open.

The scholars agree that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) did not compose even one line of poetry before revelation was given to him or thereafter. They also agree that he was prohibited from doing this as a way of closing the door to any ambiguity about the Generous Qur’an, such that no one would confuse it with poetry. Despite there being no rational or scriptural proof for the impossibility of his reciting the poetry composed by others or mentioning verses of poetry composed by others, in its proper meter, the scholars differed about whether these things occurred historically. Many scholars stated that this did not occur and even blatantly said that if he (Allah bless him and give him peace) wished to use a line of poetry as an example he wouldn’t complete the line. And if he did complete a line of poetry as an example, he wouldn’t say it in its proper meter. This claim spread far and wide among many of the linguists, exegetes, and historians. They cited examples of this, and they provided as proof many reports such that this became a core axiom for them. If, however, they came upon a report that indicates that the Prophet recited poetry in meter form, they sought out some type of figurative interpretation. They did all of this without having first grounded their axiom in any type of proof and without providing any evidence for the correctness of the figurative interpretations that they put forward.

Qutb’s book “Fi Zilal Al-Quran” has received wide acclaim from both its proponents and opponents; hence its several editions. In order to shed some light on this book, the theme of the Unseen (Occult) is selected for further study in this paper. For it is well known among Islamic Dogma specialists that the Occult doctrine is one of the pillars of Faith. This study is divided into three chapters (concept, content and methodology). So what is the Occult? How is it viewed by Sayyid Qutb? How is it present in his Tafseer? What is his approach to studying it? These are some of the questions answered by this study, noting that I have not seen a precedent specialized study of this aspect.
