‘СЕРДИТЬСЯ’ ПО-ВЕПССКИ (ИМЕНОВАНИЯ ПОНЯТИЯ В КОНТЕКСТЕ ЛИНГВИСТИЧЕСКОЙ ГЕОГРАФИИ)*

Author(s): Nina Grigorievna Zaitseva / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5 (166)/2017

The lingo-geographic studies are rather popular in the Finno-Ugric research world. Sustainable accumulation of dialectal materials, conducted for an extended period of time, is resulting in the development of dialectological atlases. The work on the elaboration of the “Linguistic Atlas of the Vepsian Language” has been in progress for some years. The dialectic parcelling of the Vepsian speech, according to the three main Vepsian languages (North-Vepsian or Prionezhsky dialect, Central-Vepsian and South-Vepsian), was introduced by the Finnish linguists. Later it was accepted by the Russian Vepsian scholars as an approach consistent with reality. First of all, it was connected to the geographical location of Vepses’ residence. Specificity of the work on the vocabulary, allocated on the linguistic maps of the future atlas and in the follow up comments, is presented in this article through the term naming of the concept ‘(to get) angry’ in the dialects of the Vepsian language. The survey shows that there are words of the Baltic-Finnish origin (käraita, pahiduda, verduda / vertta), Vepsian innovative vocabulary (kurktuda), traces of contacts with the Karelian language (sänduda), and Russian folk dialects rändüda. A set of these factors has left its imprint on the development of dialectal areas in the Vepsian language.

“Balık” Sözcüğü Üzerine

Author(s): Nesrin Güllüdag / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 26/2015

The smallest meaningful units of the sentence, words are the smallest meaningful parts of the tongue that enables people to communicate. The words, basic elements of tongue as a living being, change, develop or disappear in time. The word 'fish', which we encounter in the first examples of Köktürk scriptures, is a general name of the animal which reproduces in eggs, takes breath with gills, lives in water from the chordates, as it is explained in Turkish Dictionary. Fish is a word that has been used for about one thousand and two hundred centuries in Turkish language. In this study, the ‘fish’ has been analyzed within the works from the first written documents to today ones. The origin of ‘fish’ word has not been accepted mutually from the beginning of former period of Turkish language. Rather than revealing a certain view on the origin of this word, there are current viewpoints in this study. The usage of ‘fish’ word in meaning as city and as a fish, itself has been analyzed through its adventure for centuries by exemplifying historical texts. While some words mean many objects or concepts in tongue in the past, they can mean just one of them in time. Although the word was used both as “city” and “fish living in water” or “being injured” as a verb in the past, it has only kept the meaning of fish living in water today.

„Jazyčije“ – ein Pseudoterminus der sprachwissenschaftlichen Ukrainistik

Author(s): Michael Moser / Language(s): German / Issue: 1-2/2004

The term jazyčije/jazyčyje was created in the second half of the 19th century in order to characterize the language of the West Ukrainian Russophiles and furthermore any varieties of the Ukrainian language which did not correspond to the folk language in a satisfying degree. The term was widely accepted and made its way into various handbooks on the history of the Ukrainian literary language. As a consequence, a lot of West Ukrainian, particularly Galician sources have not been thoroughly studied since at least the end of the Second, if not the end of the First World War. A critical analysis of the definition of jazyčije/ jazyčyje and a survey of the range of varieties shows that the West Ukrainian development of the Ukrainian language is far more heterogenous, complex, and interesting with respect to the history of the Ukrainian language as a whole than the term jazyčije/jazyčyje suggests.

„Nie ma materii martwej – martwota jest jedynie pozorem”. O ambiwalencjach Schulzowskiego materializmu

„Nie ma materii martwej – martwota jest jedynie pozorem”. O ambiwalencjach Schulzowskiego materializmu

Author(s): Agnieszka Dauksza / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2013

The present essay is an attempt to consider the status of rubbish, debris, remains, cuttings, and scrap paper, so often to be found in Schulz’s fiction. Such apparently useless trash seem to be the main substance that organized Schulz’s reality. Sometimes it makes a significant substitute for more complex or sophisticated forms of the material world, on other occasions it point to the general condition of modern culture. In Schulz’s stories, waste is almost never just useless excess of ready-made forms, but very often it makes the main component of more complex structures – both strictly physical, material, and linguistic, whenever it inspires an imaginary search, triggers metaphors or provides a core around which the language of description can start growing. The formlessness and potentiality of such forms, just as the “porousness” or “plasticity”of matter as such, seduce the artist and tempt him to shape them, to make an epistemological and creative effort.

„Spotkanie, którego nie będzie”. „Na wierzbach… nasze skrzypce” Juliana Stryjkowskiego

Author(s): Grazyna Maroszczuk / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Grażyna Maroszczuk’s sketch concerns the migration experience of the writer, whom fateand history sentenced to frequent changes of abode due to political coercion, to the desire to save his life and, in the post-war period, to the cognitive curiosity realizing itself through travel. The experience of encountering the Soviet occupation zone in the East and the American continent in the second half of the 1960s could not remain without consequences for both the subject and for the places, which his imagination was taking possession of. Changes of place turned the writer into a migrant, influenced his way of interpreting reality, showed the complicated issues of identity transformations and auto-identification entanglements inscribed in the story and autobiographical narrative “about encountering” the Other.

Author(s): Agata Paliwoda / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

„Септември ще бъде...” онлайн, или дигиталните преображения на „хартиения” текст

Author(s): Ivan Velchev / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2017

Iser’s conception of the implied reader allows us to understand more about reading opportunities, provided by technology since – by defining the reader as a disposition resulting from networks of text meanings – this notion allows their integration in the textures of the Net afterwards. As a conjunction of culture and technology, digitized text actually poses problem of bringing these together, of the cultural consequences of the encounter between digital and print culture. It is difficult to say whether this encounter refutes big postmodern myths, or proves them right, but this answer will undoubtedly affect the destiny of the text.

„Строителите на съвременна България”: въвеждане извън национализма

Author(s): Ventseslav Sholtse / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2017

The aim of this paper is to make an inquiry into the structure of Introduction to Bulgarian author and diplomat Simeon Radev’s book of history Builders of Modern-day Bulgaria (1910). The inquiry conceives a certain problematization of the supposedly self-evident meaning of the text by showing its irreducible ambiguity. The paper tries to propose a new theoretical framework for future analyses on nationalist discourse in Bulgarian context.

Author(s): Aleksandar B. Nedeljkovic / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 49/1/2012

Hemingway’s novella “The Old Man and the Sea” ought to be re-considered from a purely practical standpoint, as an economic fishing project. We applied the kind of strictness which we usually apply in the studies of another genre, science fiction: we demanded the same high level of plausibility and logical coherence. But Hemingway’s famous story did not endure such high criteria of quality. Here is why. The protagonist, old Santiago, is a professional fisherman, so his job is, simply, to catch fish and sell them as meat, for the markets in Cuba. We are told that for 84 days he did not catch anything at all, not a single fish, so his economic situation was very bad indeed, he was in deep poverty. It would stand to reason that he would want to catch some fish, any fish, and then return quickly to sell it. Then he happens to catch a huge fish, a 750-kilo marlin, about five and a half meters long, which could not possibly have fit inside his small boat (a skiff). This fish is about ten times heavier than Santiago, and much heavier than Santiago and the skiff together. He persists in the unreasonable, foolhardy task of overpowering the marlin. When he, quite improbably, does overpower the marlin, he lets it stay plump in the water, to be eaten by sharks. Definitely he could have carved four 25-kilogram chunks of best meat, and hurried home, but, instead, he attaches the fish to the outside of his skiff, and, in consequence, returns very slowly, so that the sharks have time to eat all the meat. But, previously, he did catch a dolphin, which, science tells us, could not have been of less than 40 kilo weight, and kills him; but instead of keeping this excellent catch, and hurrying back with it, he merely eats a few bites of dolphin’s very good meet, but raw, and without salt, and then throws him back into the water! So we really must ask ourselves what his business plan, with which he sailed out from a small fishing village Kohimar near Havana, was. Why did he not cut the line with the marlin, and return immediately, triumphantly, with the dolphin in his skiff? His plan must have been quite something else. But, it is incredible that whole generations of critics did not notice this. They should have been able to see through the author’s rather obvious narrative strategies. For us, only one possible conclusion remains, about Santiago’s motives.

Author(s): Björn Hansen / Language(s): Russian / Issue: VIII/2006

The contribution deals with ethnonyms and their relationship to ethnic stereotypes withspecial focus on Russian and some other European languages. It addresses both methodologicaland theoretical questions. First, it advocates the use of large electronic corpora for the study ofstereotypical usages of ethnonyms and demonstrates how a corpus of linguistic data can enhancethe study of stereotypes encoded in linguistic structures. Second, it addresses the relationshipbetween mental stereotypes in the sense of Adam Schaff and semantic associations (connotations)encoded in polysemy, derivates and idiomatic expressions. It is argued that although many connotationsindeed do reflect ethnic stereotypes, we can find other cases where the connection is onlyindirect or has faded away completely. The author comes to the conclusion that notwithstandinga considerable overlap connotations and tereotypes are not identical and, therefore, should be keptapart.

Author(s): Elena Vlaeriyevna Gabrielova / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5/2015

The paper presents the results of the investigation carried out to define the language means of implicit and explicit estimation used by participants of the Tea Party protest movement, which emerged in 2009 in the United States. According to the content analysis of Twitter messages performed with the help of the Atlas.ti software program, the main trends in the topics and linguistic devices implemented by users while expressing their opinions are defined. The data analysis shows that requests for assistance, criticism against the US president, and support of the protest movement are, as a rule, expressed explicitly. Participants often state their opinions implicitly through the use of irony, phraseological units, implicit estimation, question structures, and quotations.

Author(s): Izabela Kowalska-Paszt / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 150/2015

Based on the literary and cultural material, the article discusses two functions played by the term of emigrantology as a legacy of three waves of Russian emigration in the 20th century. The term was introduced by Lucjan Suchanek to the research space of Slavic emigration. It has systematized the area of intellectual and scientific self-reflection (including literary studies, historiography, philosophy and theology, and cultural studies), which developed in the community of Russian emigration. Additionally, the term provides modelling of the need for interdisciplinary and in the nearest future trans-disciplinary studies on the complex cultural phenomenon of Slavic emigrations. In this particular context, the article presents major research directions and achievements of Russian studies in Poland.
