This paper examines the possibilities of extraction of wh-words from adjective phrases in Croatian. It is argued that extraction is possible from non-specific, but not from specific attributive adjective phrases, while it is generally possible from predicative adjective phrases. The restrictions on extraction are motivated by the pragmatic principle stating that presupposed information cannot be questioned.

The article discusses prepositional-case structures with a nominal head that have an ad-junct in the instrumental case with the preposition nad(a). The fundamental purpose of this paper is to point to the semantic types of the structures in question and try to explain the ways of semantic transposition the spatial preposition nad(a) in more complex semantic domains. The notions of space are transformed into abstract concepts by means of metaphoric copying – into the concepts of “domination“, of cause, and of comparison. As a consequence, the noun phrases in question are furnished with the spatial meaning of “domination“, as well as with causative and comparative meaning. The position of the head is occupied by concrete nouns owing to the sentence condensation, or by verbal nouns arising through the processes of nominalization of verbal structures.

This paper discusses the instrumental noun phrases and prepositional phrases with the instrumental, which appear with psychological verbs. In brief outline we elucidate our understanding of the arguments. The question of whether the arguments expressed with instrumental are arguments or adjuncts has been studied in various analyses (Schütze 1995; Van Valin 2001; Koenig et al. 2003, 2008). The problem of classifying instrumental noun phrases as one of different types of arguments arose in processing the verbs within the different theories of valency. Instrumental can be marked as an instrumental argument, adverbial, predicate or as part of a prepositional argument. We present and propose various formal and semantic tests that can determine the type of argument and divide the instrumental noun phrases into instrumental, predicate, adverbial and prepositional complements.

We demonstrate a system of Hungarian deverbal nominalizations, based on our extension of Laczkó’s framework (Laczkó 2000), in which such nouns form a uniform system as the ÁS-noun felfedezés ‘discovery’, the TEV-noun felfedezte(kor) ‘when discovered’, the Ó-noun felfedező ‘discoverer’, and the TTH-noun felfedezett(je) ‘discoveree’. We provide a comprehensive compari-son among the complex-event-based and event-type-based of the deverbal nominal construction variants (e.g., megoperálás ‘operating’ versus operáció ‘operation’) on the basis of verbal and nominal properties considered in Broekhuis and Keizer (2012) and properties specific to Hungarian, such as information-structure inheritance, for instance (Alberti and Farkas 2013).

Article is a theoretical attempt to explore the relationships between sexes in Bulgaria in the period between two world wars. Transformations in Bulgarian society, closely connected to the more visible women’s presence in social publicity, provoked a lot of topics and motives in Bulgarian literature, written by women. Emancipation, access to university education, women’s rights to work and career are among the key problems in works of Maria Grubeshlieva, Anna Karima, Sanda Yovcheva, Fani Popova- Mutafova. New social conditions posed a question of woman, who loves and fights for her love. This became a basis for many subjects in Bulgarian interwar literature in which the love is seen as a part of complicated code of changing ethical codex of modern society. Many literary works interprets in philosophical and ethical key the questions of maternity, marriage, prostitution, women’s right of work and independent life. These topics are part of directly orientated through the women’s problems literature, whose ethical and social features are object of analysis.

“Harold Pinter’s Dramaturgy and Its Perception in Bulgaria” by Stoyan Georgiev is a doctoral dissertation, registered at the Institute of Literature at the Bulgarian Academy of Science. The third chapter, from which is the offered here fragment, is under the title: “Functions of deception in Pinter’s plays”. Deception can be revealed in all meaningful and structural levels in his works. One of these levels is the level of the characters, whose most distinct feature is that they lie as they breathe, because the nice and interesting lie is a necessity for them, a real art, which they enhance all the time. Although it looks like a paradox from the first sight, deception determines the composition of most Pinter’s plays as well. Some of them are called by critics “traps” not by accident. Language has lost its communicative abilities and thus has betrayed its true purpose. It is incapable of carrying meaning, has become not up to par and is an object of disintegration.

This paper presents a document dating from 1092/1681: the document confirms the sale and endowment of figs and olives seedlings as well as the other properties on land of Madrasa al-Ṣalāḥiyya in Jerusalem, which was implemented by the means of the so-called al-ḥikr. The brothers from Sarajevo, Pavle, Jakov and Antun, have purchased the this particular property and bequeathed it to the Franciscan monks who live in the monastery al-’Amūd (Monastery of the Holy Saviour) in Jerusalem and to the poor Christians that required alms from the brothers. The curious issue in this case is the prevailing opinion of scholars that the space that is the subject of the sale in this document is space Gethsemane garden, one of the most important Christian holy sites.

The successful effects of marketing are well known to companies that do not hesitate to spend millions in advertising. All kinds of tricks and techniques with the sole purpose of affecting the potential consumer in one way or other are being used. There is a constant search for new ways and dimensions in which fresh and exciting methods can be implemented and the final goal of this process is directing the message about the product to the costumers. In this article, we have analyzed the language used in advertisements that were broadcasted on the Macedonian radio television and other television stations in the period between 2000 and 2014. We have put emphasis on the advertisements’ language characteristics, or to be specific, on the standard Macedonian language that is used in combination with marketing components in order to make the ads successful and the product acknowledged. We also conducted research which displays language characteristics that are desirable in an advertisement and the language that native speakers of Macedonian favor.

The article examines one feature of Bulgarian slang in internet – the presence of an absolute superlative degree of comparison, called absolute superlative or elative. It shows ownership of a given quality at the highest level and it is about to occupy fourth place in the paradigm (over positive, comparative and superlative). The new forms are exclusive and emotional, because for young people the expressive function is more important than the communicative. The frequent use of these new structures in informal communication causes their increased presence in media and advertising, which also relies on originality and expressiveness of speech.

Partial abbreviations (where briefly only the first word) on the whole more than fragmental (those, thatconsisted of syllables).
