Author(s): Voskre Naumoska Ilieva / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 11/2/2015

In recent years, a number of changes have occurred in Macedonia, and at the same time there have been many problems that have contributed to certain communities to find themselves out of the social flows, socially excluded and marginalized. In 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, a decade of regional conflicts, instability, and increased population movement began. The political, economic and social transition meant a marked decline in the living conditions and deterioration in access to services, opportunities for education, employment, and a decline in health indicators, leading to an increase in poverty. These changes affected vulnerable groups of population, especially Roma Tozija, 2008: 59). Due to this situation, the possibility for bigger development of the civil sector as a third sector has opened up, as a complement to the government and the private in the area of social protection, due to the inability to respond to the increase of social problems and social testing of certain communities.

Социјални статус Рома у Кнежевини Србији

Социјални статус Рома у Кнежевини Србији

Author(s): Ivan Janković / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2017

Social status of the Roma in Serbia until 1884, like their legal status, was comparable to that in other provinces of the Ottoman empire: they were marginalized and stigmatized, at the very bottom of the social hierarchy. This was due to the nomadic lifestyle of a part of the Roma population, their identification with dishonourable occupations, their religious indif ference and the colour of their skin. They were spatially segregated into separate neighbour hoods (cigan-mala), which since 1850 were also designated for the mandatory residence of prostitutes, which contributed to the general stigmatization of the Roma. The ethnic distance between the Serbs and the Roma was extreme, with a very few interethnic marriages: the Orthodox church did not allow marriage between the nomadic Roma and the Serbs, although marriages between sedentary Christian Roma and the Serbs were possible. The Roma based their political legitimacy on the participation of individual Roma in the First Serbian uprising (1804–1813), as well as on the 1838 Constitution under which they considered themselves as rightful Serbian citizens.

Социологическая экспедиция как исследовательская практика и форма обучения полевой работе

Author(s): Vitaly Kurennoj / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2015

The concept of the “sociological expedition” implies various forms of collaborative empirical research, for which ethnographic fieldwork serves as the fundamental model. While this form of training students (“education through research”) is still relatively rare in Russia, in recent years its visibility has grown and its organizers have become more experienced. We were interested in finding out how, in each particular case, the idea of organizing such training retreats for students developed. What are the peculiarities and practical difficulties involved in conducting this kind of research and training? Finally, what role in the educational process should such research expeditions play? Participants in the discussion below note the importance of collaborative field research to students’ professional socialization and reflect about their own experiences of such trips, expressing regret that academic institutions still do not sufficiently support the practice.

Author(s): Оlexandra Rudnitska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 2/2019

The purpose of the article is to explore the sociocultural integration of Roma into Ukrainian culture in the XXI century, to determine the phenomenon of Roma art among prominent figures in the Ukrainian scene (Based on the work of Igor Krykunov, Petro Chornuy), to trace the interconnection and interplay of their creativity on the formation of Ukrainian culture. The methodology of the study is based on the use of cultural-genetic, sociological, structural-systemic, comparative methods for identifying sources of origin and essential characteristics of representatives of different ethnic groups of Roma as a specific component of cultural life and the newest structure of the Ukrainian society. The scientific novelty of the article is that it first defines the concept of "Roma art," compares the characteristics of different Roma groups ("servu" and Ruska Roma), reveals the origin, formation, contemporary status, and influence of Roma art on the development of Ukrainian culture of the XXI century. Conclusions. The sociocultural integration of Roma has a significant impact on the development of Ukrainian culture of the XXI century. A large number of Roma ethnic groups live in Ukraine. Three groups of the Roma population were most widespread: "servu" or Ukrainian Roma, Ruska Roma, and "lovari" (Hungarian Roma). Roma were actively involved in social processes, bringing their own cultural values to the country where they lived. Yes, the contribution of Roma artists is quite essential in contemporary art. The study of the creativity of contemporary Roma art gives grounds to claim that these personalities position their creativity as an integral part of Ukrainian culture. This is reflected in the work of Petro Chornuy and Igor Krikunov; their creativity is an asset for the Ukrainian culture. It clearly demonstrates the sociocultural integration of the Roma into Ukrainian culture of the XXI century.

Споделено културно-историческо наследство и трансгранично сътрудничество?

Author(s): Violeta Periklieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The article examines the policy of cross-border cooperation in the field of culture and cultural and historical heritage of the bordering region of Petrich, Bulgaria, and Strumica, Macedonia. For centuries, until their final political division after 1944, the two regions were not familiar with the existence of dividing state border and established close economic, social and cultural relations. However, in the period after 1944, those relations were rendered difficult and for a certain time even completely impeded which led to their strong violation. The political contradictions between Bulgaria and Macedonia (until 1991 part of Yugoslavia) almost completely broke off the contacts and cooperation between the municipalities of Petrich and Strumica. The attempts at their resumption began only after the year of 2000 when the European mechanisms for cross-border cooperation started working. Focusing the attention on joint projects of the two municipalities, the article tries to answer the question to what extent the example of cross-border cooperation presented here achieve the purposes related to cultural and historical heritage and identity and set in the idea of a "Europe of the regions" and which are the main problems and failures.

Спомени и рефлексии за всекидневието на българските турци по време на тоталитарния режим

Author(s): Nadezhda Zhechkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2019

The proposed text does not attempt to present in detail the transformations pertaining to the Bulgarian Turks that have taken place in the state system and the society in Bulgaria since November 10, 1989. Rather, it attempts to explore a phenomenon which, at first glance, undoubtedly resembles nostalgia, but reveals, after a more thorough looking into it, the Bulgarian Turks‘ memory of the repressive party line of the totalitarian state and its culmination - the policy of forced assimilation, cynically called „revival process“. Also, the new reality of the Transition evokes a certain perception of the totalitarian regime, not in regards to its construction, normative or services, but in regards to its everyday life expressed through work realization, education, organization of public spaces, etc.

Сравнително проучване на гръкоезични преселнически общности в България и Гърция

Author(s): Darina Slavova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2020

The Karioti are a Greek-speaking ethnographic group from Bulgaria, a large part of which migrated to Greece in the 1920s. The hypotheses about the emergence of the migrant community in the village of General Inzovo as well as the factors influencing the emigration to settlements in Northern Greece (the Municipality of Eginio, Thessaloniki region, and the village of Trikala in Imathias) are diverse: social, economic, political and others. The new environment in which the Karioti settled had a significant impact on the community. Language, traditional clothing and cultural features are part of the external manifestations that distinguish them from other communities. By using certain specific elements in traditional clothing, the community demonstrates a desire to be distinguished among others and vice versa, by rejecting others it reflects a desire to join the urban community. The preservation of the musical heritage of the Greek-speaking communities in the three settlements has gone through several periods, which are not identical in the two countries. Contemporary folklore manifestations and the activities of the community cultural institutions in the settlements aim to preserve the local identity of the Karioti in Bulgaria and Greece.

Срби од конститутивног народа до националне мањине

Срби од конститутивног народа до националне мањине

Author(s): Nada Raduški / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2012

Multidisciplinary approach is very important in studying rights and status of national minorities, and related to this demographic studies also have special significance. This paper analyzes population growth and the position of Serbs in the states founded on the territory of former Yugoslavia where, before the collapse of that state and geopolitical changes, they were one of the six constituent peoples but today they are national minority. The main data sources in this paper are the official population censuses, considering that the size and ethnic compactness are the main demographic factors that significantly affect the realization of the rights and freedoms of each minority. Although the social and legal status of the Serbian minority is determined by European standards of minority rights, the analysis points to their more or less unfavorable position which is, among other things, affected by under- designed politics of mother country.

Срби у Темишвару

Author(s): Mirjana Pavlović / Language(s): Serbian

This book is dedicated to the customs, culture and way of life of Serbs in Timisoara. The emphasis is on the strategies of constructing and achieving community and layered identities (national/ethnic, dual, regional, local) within a historic discourse. The data presented in this book has been gathered through various means. Aside from archival material and statistical data on the life of the community, as well as relevant theoretical approaches in the study of ethnicity, the most important data was acquired through fieldwork. The research began in 2002, and took place over a series of short-term visits to the city in 2002, 2003 and 2005. The method of participant observation was applied to many everyday as well as festive situations in the family and social lives of Serbs in Timisoara. I have attended numerous liturgies, weddings, christenings, choir and folklore association rehearsals and performances, family and social celebrations and sporting events. Interviews, surveys and informal conversations were conducted with members of the community encompassing both sexes, all ages and varying social status, political and religious affiliations. Among my informants there were people whose connections to the church weren’t strong, as well as people from mixed marriages. Aside from this, I had tried to gather data on the lives of Serbs between the World wars or earlier indirectly – through the narratives of their descendants.
