Casey Nelson Blake, Daniel H. Borus, and Howard Brick. At the Center: American Thought and Culture in the Mid-Twentieth Century. Rowman and Littlefield, 2020. Pp. 325

Author(s): Gabriel C. Gherasim / Language(s): English Issue: 42/2024

The twelfth book in a series of fifteen kaleidoscopic works intended to recapitulate various developments in American thought and culture from the early 16th century to the end of the 20th century, At the Center: American Thought and Culture in the Mid-Twentieth Century stands for a vertiginous effort to encircle the most impactful achievements of intellectuals in various fields in mid-twentieth century America. As an explicit endeavor in intellectual history, the book dives into the dense waters of notable works that have decisively modelled intellectual patterns of thought in the period 1948-1963 and impacted upon further developments.

Dana Gioia. Christianity and Poetry. Wiseblood Books, 2024

Author(s): Roxana Elena Doncu / Language(s): English Issue: 42/2024

An internationally acclaimed poet, California's Poet Laureate (2015-2018) and one of the most influential critical figures in American letters today, Dana Gioia has authored six poetry volumes, including Interrogations at Noon (2001), the winner of the American Book Award and three books of criticism which look at poetry from unexpected angles. His seminal essay “Can Poetry Matter?” has made both critics and readers aware of the relationship between poetry and music, on the one hand, and poetry and narrative, on the other. In his latest, Christianity and Poetry, the complex (and not always apparent) relationships between the art of poetry and Christian faith come under critical scrutiny.

In the world of the Transylvanian villages, the "time of the harvest", mowing and hay gathering have always been a substantial part of the agricultural work during the year, and in the mountain villages this activity, although it started later, was prolonged until the beginning of September, to continue with the mowing of the sheep. The changes brought about by urbanization and forced industrialization between 1948 and 1989 and, last but not least, the international migration of the Romanian workforce in the post-totalitarian period, together with technological progress, meant that this type of seasonal 'toil', which was so defining of the Romanian countryside, declined in terms of its share and volume in the life of the villages during the summer months. With the decline of this aspect of the 'rural economy', certain practices that traditional communities used to carry out naturally and naturally, such as the organized huts during the mowing and hay harvesting seasons, also began to become a thing of the past.

Eugen Vaida, Salvând cultura celuilalt, Asociația MONUMENTUM, Sibiu, 2021

Author(s): Laura Cristina Pop / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 13/2023

An old subject, folk costume, remains in the attention of researchers either because not enough has been written yet, or because it raises disputes, but also because the evolution of costume is a continuous process. With regard to southern Transylvania, Nicolae Dunăre's contributions are an important bibliographical landmark, his volume Portul popular din zona Târnavelor (Popular costume in the Târnavelor area) continuing to be mentioned in specialized works. As far as the Târnavelor area is concerned, we can also mention the research carried out by Cornel Irimie who, in addition to his origins in the Hârtibaciului Valley, was also the one who laid the foundation stone of the Folk Technical Museum, today the ASTRA Museum. As regards the controversial topic of the contribution of the Roma to the history of the "iei cu altiță", Vintilă Mihăilescu proposed an anthropological perspective on the body and clothing of Roma women in Romania. Thus, with the evolution of the port, it can be observed that the perspectives from which this theme is approached are also constantly changing.Eugen Vaida, coordinator of the "Ambulance of Monuments" project and of the MONUMENTUM Association, is the coordinator of a volume published in 2021 in Alțâna. The group of authors who have worked on the realization of this volume is composed of names of resonance: Ligia Fulga, Mirela Crețu, Doina Ișfănoni, Ioana Corduneanu, Elena Găvan, Eugen Vaida, Sebastian Paic. From the very first meeting, the volume creates a special impression: the cover presents a title, presents a portrait photo, presents an ethnicity, presents a shirt with a hat and "a camera from the front". Saving the culture of the other. The research of the altita intacted yayas of the Hârtibaciului Valley is a project co-funded by AFCN funds in the second session of 2021, and the volume is the fruit of this research project.

Nostalgie Sienkiewicza. Perspektywa amerykańska

Author(s): Tadeusz Bujnicki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1-2/2024

Henryk Sienkiewicz’s trip to America (between 1876 and 1878) highlighted two aspects of his work then and his later oeuvre: “travomancy” and nostalgia. They were present in American reportages and novellas published after his return home (Za chlebem, Latarnik, Wspomnienie z Maripozy), which expressed various forms of these experiences (especially the longing for the lost country in exile).
