Movement of Capital and Payments. Monetary and Financial Policies and Convertibility of the Bulgarian Lev

Author(s): Lubomir Christov,Alexander Mihailov / Language(s): English

Monetary union is the final stage in economic and financial integration among countries, in the specific case analyzed in the present paper among the countries participating in the Treaty of Maastricht providing for the implementation of such a union as the ultimate objective of the convergence toward a unified Europe. Membership in such a union would require the adoption of a common currency and its circulation as a single legal tender (or the final and irrevocable pegging of exchange rates among the currencies of the participating countries), as well as the conduct of common monetary (including foreign-exchange) policy.

Inflation in Bulgaria - Methodology of Measurement and Tendencies in Its Development during 1991 - 1992

Author(s): Maria Zetcheva / Language(s): English

Price liberalization occupies a central place in every stabilization program. Its purpose is to reach a rational relative price structure and thus to eliminate the imbalance between the solvent demand and supply of goods and services, set up in the terms of administrative valuation of prices. By removing price level control arises a possibility of unfolding hidden inflationary processes in the economy. The choice of a liberalization scheme is an important problem in this aspect. It is to direct the completion of price liberalization process so that an optimum effect is reached.

Author(s): Ivan V. Angelov,Boyan V. Gyuzelev / Language(s): Bulgarian

Regardless of the course and progress of change, the political and social situation, there is no former socialist state that has not taken at least initial steps in the field of privatization. The most commonly used approaches to privatization can be summarized in two - free (coupon, voucher) privatization and capital privatization (privatization fee). The two methods are only conditionally distinguishable, since they are not applied anywhere in pure form. The application of the capital methods of privatization and the free ones everywhere are accompanied by difficulties.

Many factors contribute to lowering the price of Bulgarian privatizing enterprises. One of the most effective in this aspect is the creation of an image of the country as unfavorable for investment. This campaign has two negative consequences - it helps to repel the big investors from the country and provokes a policy in this area based on the principle of "investing all and at all costs".

"Лошите кредити": институционални и финансови аспекти, 1994

Author(s): Christina Vutcheva / Language(s): Bulgarian

Since the beginning of 1991 Bulgaria has been living through a period of transition from centralized totalitarian control to free market economy. Year 1990 can be said to mark the political liberation of the people with the adoption of the new Constitution. The economic liberalization, however, is a reality yet to be brought to life since private ownership is not prevalent in the economy. The prime aim of the transition is to substitute an absurd and inefficient economic system for a new one to rely on the free initiative, private ownership and competition.

Gender audit of the EU pre-accession funds 1999-2004

Gender audit of the EU pre-accession funds 1999-2004

Author(s): Lívia Bíziková,Jarmila Filadelfiová,Alena Králíková,Linda Sokačová / Language(s): English

Looking back into the closed period of the past could be rewarding and important for future decisions. Obviously, the decisions cannot be taken back but their outcomes may be, and often are, relevant in the following years. When it comes to finances and their division among programmes and projects, it is always interesting to assess the priorities and budgets after a certain distance in time to understand the processes and channels they passed through. The EU membership has opened a lot of new challenges for each of the accession countries. During the accession process, the countries had the possibility to finance institutional building or infrastructure development from the EU pre-accession instruments. After entering the EU, pre-accession instruments were replaced by Structural Funds. Economic impacts of the projects financed by all available instruments were relatively well documented and monitored. The projects had significant positive and negative social impact at national and regional level. Because of existing gender roles and stereotypes, the social “impacts” were not distributed equally between women and men. Moreover, the missing gender dimension on the project level helped conservation and strengthening of gender roles. That is briefly the first intent why the joint Czech and Slovak project was initiated in mid-2004. It focuses on analyses of programming documents, and a selected number of foundations re-granting European funds to local projects in both countries. In our analyses, we tried to follow the whole link from adoption of the EU directive, through preparation of national guidelines, to approved projects at national and regional level. [...]

CEPS Activities. Review 2012 – Preview 2013

Author(s): H. Onno Ruding,Karel Lannoo,Daniel Gros,Staffan Jerneck,Marco Incerti,Sally Scott / Language(s): English

The euro crisis has inflicted severe financial, economic and political damage in all countries of the eurozone and beyond. Progress was made in 2012 to address these problems and to reduce the risk of repetition but they are by far not yet fully overcome. The good news is that this crisis has forced agreement on policy measures towards more centralised, European decision-making, which was unthinkable only a few years ago, and towards more European integration in those policy areas where this is needed. The recent positions taken by member countries in the European Council testify to the need as well as the difficulties of making real progress, requiring a combination of substantial solidarity and tough discipline on the part of all countries leading to further transfer of national sovereignty.

Toward the „new normal” after COVID-19 – a post-transition economy perspective

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Toward the „new normal” after Covid-19 – a post-transition economy perspective contains a collection of 21 papers addressing the societal, political, economic, and managerial challenges of the post-pandemic world. The book is divided into three parts. Part one touches on the supranational and national level aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Part two focuses on business sectors and industries, whereas part three provides the perspective of companies.Authors – researchers from the PUEB’s Institute of International Business and Economics – share their research results, voice concerns, and offer recommendations on creating today’s world more immune to shocks and ready for unknowns. The pandemic of Covid-19 revealed many weaknesses of the global economy, national economies and states, business sectors, and individual companies. It’s undoubtedly the turning point, but simultaneously it’s an opportunity and a spur to change toward the new and sustainable normal.

Breskve i globalna kriza

Author(s): Paul Mason / Language(s): Serbian

Evropska obnova posle epidemije

Author(s): Vladimir Gligorov / Language(s): Serbian

Korona, kapitalizam i Evropa

Can the global battle for electromobility pose a threat to Central Europe?

Author(s): Konrad Popławski / Language(s): English

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) adopted in 2022 marks a profound change in the US’s approach to its economic competition with China. This will have global consequences, and will also come to affect Central Europe. Since this document was adopted, Washington has used subsidies to restrict access to the American market as a fully-fledged tool of its industrial policy. This is aimed at blocking the expansion of the Chinese automotive industry in the US and pushing it out of Western companies’ supply chains. As a result, Beijing will most likely utilise its resources to dominate the European market, capitalising on the advantages it already has. The discussion about the European response to the IRA, as well as the growing dependence of German companies on Chinese technologies in the field of electric vehicle production, suggest that Germany and Central Europe are drifting apart as regards the automotive industry, even though they used to have similar interests in this area. German vehicle manufacturers are opposed to imposing restrictions on vehicles made in China on the European market, as they fear retaliation and losing competitiveness. From the Central European perspective, the increasing presence of Chinese electric vehicles (manufactured by both European and Chinese companies) in the EU poses a threat to a key pillar of economic growth. The region has experienced unfair competition from Beijing for years, but it has managed to gain a foothold as a car production hub; its position may be undermined as a result of China’s expansion in the field of electromobility.

Wraz ze wzrostem złożoności naszej cywilizacji wskutek dynamicznego wzrostu gospodarczego wspieranego rozwojem technologii rośnie jednakże potrzeba transferu wiedzy między różnymi obszarami ludzkiej działalności. Dążenie do zrównoważonego rozwoju i zachowania różnorodności środowiska naturalnego wzmacnia te tendencje. Dotyczy to w szczególności nauk społecznych. Przedstawione zagadnienia potwierdzają celowość i ważność projektów interdyscyplinarnych dotyczących integracji wiedzy z zakresu nauk społecznych, zwłaszcza ekonomii i finansów oraz nauk o zarządzaniu i jakości, psychologii, nauk o komunikacji społecznej i mediach, nauk o polityce i administracji, nauk prawnych i nauk socjologicznych.
