The objective of this paper is to present an interesting example from Bulgaria – the Rhodope Mountains, which abound in visible and invisible boundaries. The paper focuses on the cultural elements which are selected by the communities as identifiers to distinguish themselves from others. The three basic ethno-religious groups inhabiting the mountains (Turks, Muslim Bulgarians, and Christian Bulgarians) possess a complex of cultural characteristics including language, names, self-identification, marriage patterns, traditional and ritual systems, religious affiliation, clothing, and so on, which are instrumentalized with the objective of achieving closer relations or drawing dividing lines between different communities. The process of the eradication and establishment of new boundaries is especially dynamic with regard to Muslim Bulgarians. They perceive themselves as a boundary community, and in fact they are regarded as such by both Christian Bulgarians and Turks. In their attempts to overcome that border situation, the middle and younger generations of Muslim Bulgarians in the Middle and Eastern Rhodopes have started to express a Bulgarian identity more frequently. The elder Muslim Bulgarians in the regions of Gotse Delchev, Madan, and Rudozem, as well as the younger ones, place their Muslim belonging more frequently at the center of their personal and group identity, which finds expression in the drawing of cultural boundaries to distinguish themselves from members of the other groups.

Immediately following the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948, its people were subject to live in a divided land, compromising of a Palestinian Majority of67 per cent. However, following the creation of the state this number was significantly reduced to a mere 16 per cent by military methods and forced migration. Subsequently, the Palestinian population was reduced from about 950,000 to150,000. The Palestinians in the Israeli territory were immediately put under martial law. The principle’s “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex” ", which was announced in the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel, which has never applied to the Palestinian citizens of Israel. The fact that Israel, which has defended itself as the only democracy in the Middle East for decades, had not recognized any rights granted to Palestinian minorities living within the state of Israel. Therefore could Israel be considered a democracy when it neglects fundamental rights to the Palestinian citizens of Israel?A two state solution for Israeli-Palestinian problems has been discussed internationally since its partition, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 29 November 1947.However, while these discussions are under way, the presence and position of 1.8 million Palestinian Israeli citizens who inhabit the state, compromising roughly 20 percent of Israel’s total population continue to be neglected.Palestinians living in Israel make up 12 percent of the total Palestinian population in the world, and any solution which is ignoring them is not practically viable for either the State of Israel or Palestinian Authorities. This article aims to discuss the issues of Palestinian citizens of Israel who have been ignored in the peace negotiation process, the dilemmas of the two-state solution proposed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Czechs are one of the ethnic groups that have been present in the life of the town since its foundation. Czech soldiers, officials, craftsmen, and musicians moved into Bjelovar. The strongest trace Czechs left was in the music sphere, starting from father Hubert Diviš, a creator and organizer of the musical life in Bjelovar, Josef Mazánek, a conductor of the oldest singing society Dvojnice to Josef Bis and Emil Černy, two musicians whose compositions weren’t explored so their entire work cannot be entirely valued. Dr. Josip Vrana, one of the distinguished Slavists, tried to maintain and to promote the Czech language. Today’s presence of Czechs in the cultural life of Bjelovar is being observed mostly through the Czech culturalartistic society Česká obec Bjelovar, established in the year 1920.

Yugoslavia was formed in 1918 by the integration of existing separate states, Serbia and Montenegro and former Austro-Hungarian provinces: Slovenia, Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Vojvodina i.e. Banat, Bačka and Baranja. Due to the ethnic conglomeration and historical circumstances, two opposing tendencies prevailed concerning the organization of the state: one, to organize Yugoslavia as a unitary state, the other, that Yugoslavia should become a confederacy. In the first case, care was taken to ignore ethnic borders, and in the second, to create separate national states within these ethnic borders. The 1921 Vidovdan constitution divided Yugoslavia into thirty-three regions whose organs had a certain autonomy, while a law Issued in 1929 and confirmed by the Constitution of 1931 divided the country into nine administrative areas (banovina). In both cases borders were defined according to economic, geographic criteria, ignoring the ethnic factor. Ten years later, in 1939, Banovina Hrvatska was formed as a »corpus separatum« or anasymmetric federation, mainly by ethnic criteria: its borders included, besides Croatia and Dalmatia also parts of Bosnia and Hercegovina and Vojvodina. In 1940 a project was made to form separate »Serbian Lands«. This contribution was based on published and unpublished sources (texts of constitutions, laws) and literature, and is part of a wider topic concerning the borders of Yugoslavia.

At the beginning of Operation ‘Barbarossa’, the 6th ‘Vânători’ (Huntsmen) Regiment wasstationed near the Prut River, waiting for orders from the 14th Infantry Division to cross itinto Bessarabia through the Sculeni border point. This article studies the involvement ofsoldiers belonging to that regiment in the earliest actions aimed at exterminating the Jewsduring the summer campaign of 1941. The study has two parts. In part one, I present themanner in which the withdrawal from Bessarabia, in 1940, was perceived by members ofthe regiment. At the same time, I present the ways in which the hatred against the Jews wasfueled, through orders and intelligence reports sent by the higher echelons of the militaryto the members of the regiment. The last pages in the first part of the study about this unitof the Romanian Army aims at reconstructing the soldiers’ involvement in the exterminationof the Sculeni Jews in the early days of the war. The other massacres in which soldiers ofthe 6th ‘Vânători’ Regiment were involved are focused on in the latter part of this project.

The 5+2 format of negotiations on Transnistrian conflict is a good framework to achieve the goal of establishing a durable peace on Dniester’s banks. However, Moldovan negotiators face difficulties to reach this objective. There is not clearly formulated set of common values, interests (and needs) that can unite the two banks of the river. Only in such conditions can be restored and consolidated the Moldovan integral state. In this context, it is explainable why till now there are no plans (projects) of resolving the conflict, elaborated by Moldovan government’s servants. Only such documents could be a base for discussions in 5+2 format (the third basket).

Preschool education is the foundation of mother tongue education, and is one of the main pillars of national identity. Effective planning of the kindergarten network requires knowledge of the future development of the number of preschool age groups. The paper presents the results of the projection of the number of Hungarian speaking 3–5 year-olds in Transcarpathia in the 2018–2022 period. This data may determine the demographic basis of the Hungarian kindergarten network in the near future. The number of Hungarians, ethnically mixed Hungarian-Ukrainians, and Hungarian-speaking Gypsy children were counted separately, because the extent and possibilities of inclusion of the three groups in Hungarian kindergarten education differ. The study also includes the categorization of Transcarpathian settlements based on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the Hungarian-speaking kindergarten children living there.

The number of students in public education in Romania dropped overall by 39 percent, from 4.1 million students to 2.5 million, from 1990 to 2017. The decline in the number of students enrolled in Hungarian medium education was somewhat more moderate, involving a decrease from 188,000 to 122,000 students (35%). Changes in ratios show partially positive trends. After the share of participants in Hungarian education in the total school aged population in Romania hit a low of 4.6% in 1996, it embarked on a growing trend until the 2010s. A period of stagnation followed, with a 5.1-5.2% share of Hungarian students in the total population of students enrolled in the national education system. The ratio continues to remain short of the 6% share. Regions in Transylvania and various education levels show different dynamics compared to the general picture. The paper describes and analyzes these differences.

Cross-border kinship has been a particular hallmark of Kurdish identity and an important source of solidarity between Kurds of different regions within Kurdistan. However, this article argues that the values of cross-border Kurdish solidarity have been violated in the past, due to the collaboration of elements of the Kurdish movement with the Turkish, Iranian, Iraqi and Syrian states. Misconducted cross-border interaction has led to movement fragmentation, decline or/and termination, and to internecine violence between different sections of the Kurdish movement. This paper, reflecting on the interaction between the Iranian and Iraqi Kurdish movements from the 1960s to the 1990s, argues that the Iranian Kurdish movement has been disadvantaged and has faced multifaceted challenges and difficulties partially owing to this interaction.
