The Zapatista Rebellion in Mexico: First Post-Modern Revolution or Classical Guerilla Movement?
The present article approaches the hypothesis according to which the Zapatista rebellion in southern Mexico is the first post-modern revolution. It focuses on the rise and evolution of the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation), highlighting the context, causes and goals of the movement. At the same time, it analyses the effects it produced both in Mexico and abroad, as a result of the novel tactics it employed in order to achieve its political purposes. The present study’s conviction is that, even though it has been easily labeled as post-modern, the Zapatista struggle is inseparable from the past and culture of the Indians, whose rights it aims to retrieve in the political arena.
