Today it is possible to consider that the new technologies can offer many possibilities to be explored. There is no doubt about the changes in society when it is adequately supported by the new technologies. In fact, people from all over the world used to have high hopes that new technologies will be able to improve and promote healthier life, as well they also expect a huge impulse to promoting social freedoms, and at least to increase knowledge and more productive livelihoods. But for this scenario become true the traditional education goals should change to a different direction to gaining locally relevant goals and skills. In order to establish networks for all kind of partnerships, the new technologies could be used as the means for providing an access to and engaging in the lifelong learning programs all social groups of population around the world.

Hieromonk Amphiloh Iordănescu was a great singer, calligrapher, translator and composer of orthodox church music. He worked at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. He was a singer at several churches in Bucharest from 1884 until 1925, when he was a monk at Cozia Monastery, being a professor of church music at the school of singers here. In 1929 he served as a priest at the Negru Vodă - Câmpulung Monastery, and in 1930 he was appointed priest at Pasărea Monastery. The most important book he printed is the Music Bouquet (psaltichii) at the Printing House of the Church Books in Bucharest in 1933. This book is one of the most used by church singers in the Orthodox Church Services. Amphiloh's work is very extensive, has over 2.000 pages of manuscripts stiil needing and covers all the services of the Orthodox Church in the public divine cult. Hieromonk Amphiloh Iordănescu was a great personality in the field of Romanian church music, which today tends to be left in oblivion.

At the time this inaugural issue of Avar: A Journal of Life and Society in the Ancient Near East heads to press, we are keenly aware of the fact that the number of new journals in the fields of Biblical Studies, Egyptology, and broader Ancient Near Eastern Studies have proliferated in the last decade. Yet, we hope to demonstrate to our readers that Avar fills an important lacuna in the academic study of the ancient past. The title of the journal, Avar, centers interdisciplinarity as the primary framework for illuminating life and society in the ancient Near East. In what follows, we will introduce our vision for such interdisciplinarity.
