The author discusses the first appearance of the Magazine in the wider area of Gračanica, which meant that it would also include his birthplace, including the town of Srebrenik. Therefore, he sees the Magazine as a native cultural review in which regionalism would be emphasized more than localism. In that sense, he suggests that the Magazine should “cover” the geographical and economic sub region, which would include Gračanica, Srebrenik, Gradačac, Doboj Istok and Lukavac, with a spiritual center on the hill Ratiš, which has its own special symbolism and significance.

This is the first issue of East European Politics and Societies under its new editorship. The principal goal of the journal, however, remains unchanged: I am as determined as Daniel Chirot to establish EEPS as the central, unifying publication for all the disciplines in the East European field. This means that the politics and societies of the title will be interpreted in the broadest possible way. EEPS will favor no discipline or methodology. It will seek to publish the best scholarly work that contributes to the understanding of the region's myriad problems, both historical and contemporary. It will not confuse the problems of any particular social system with the larger issues that preoccupy the region. Nor will it insist on regional unity; for Eastern Europe is the most heterogeneous area of Europe. [...]

This is the seventh EEPS issue, the first in the journal's third year. The quality of the 35 articles published in the first two years confirms the opinion of the Joint Committee for Eastern Europe of the ACLS and SSRC, expressed in 1984, that there was need and ample room for a new scholarly journal in our field. East European studies contain a substantial number of first-rate scholars in the United States, in Europe, and increasingly elsewhere, too. Though there were and continue to be other journals which publish good materials about Eastern Europe, few are devoted entirely to our region, and none in the United States could act as a central, unifying publication for the field. Though there are already some good journals that carry articles on Eastern Europe, we believe that a journal devoted entirely to publishing high quality research and thinking about important social, political, and economic issues in this part of the world would be welcomed by area specialists and could also attract interest from other social analysts. The journal will serve as a focus for a set of intellectual activities that recognize and investigate the novel and significant nature of East European politics and societies. [...]

U dugom povijesnom luku od antičkih i srednjovjekovnih artes liberales, programa renesansnoga humanizma studia humanitatis do modernih humanističkih znanosti u okviru Humboldtova neohumanizma stigli smo do postmodernoga antihumanizma, posthumanizma i transhumanizma.
