The current world is globally differentiated in many segmented sexual subcultures. Unsurprisingly, the existence of sexual differences – real or imagined, feared or desired – is embedded in the functioning of ethnocultural boundaries. As the papers published in this special issue show, migration challenges such boundaries in many ways – some obvious, some counter-intuitive - and through a variety of processes. In recent years, many studies of migration-related sexual change have legitimized the importance of this topic among migration scholars. We do not have yet, however, satisfactory analytical frameworks and cumulative research programs. In this introduction to the special issue, we show how future progress may be contingent upon the capacity to distinguish among different perspectives as well as towards a more explicit discussion of the existing narratives.

This set of articles is the result of a panel held at the 78th annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology from April 3-7, 2018, in Philadelphia, United States of America. The title of the panel, during which the four authors presented papers, was “Forced Migration as Liminal Experience: Policy and Agency.” The articles highlight forced migration to the United States, illustrated by Hispanic women without legal immigration status near Chicago, Illinois; resettled Syrian refugees in Austin, Texas; resettled Cambodian refugees living near Mobile, Alabama; Karen refugees resettled near Atlanta, Georgia; and Karenni refugees who were resettled in Omaha, Nebraska. These articles reveal lives of both refugees with legal status and forced migrants without legal documentation. This set of articles also represents national and ethnic groups from Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, regions with large numbers of forced migrants. The articles focus on the intersection of three concepts with complex and varying definitions: migration, resilience, and wellbeing. These concepts highlight differing social and cultural contexts but also shared experiences and struggles. We briefly describe our understanding of these concepts and then highlight how these are useful conceptual frameworks to see commonalities and differences among the four different case studies.

This special issue, entitled "Participatory methods in migration research", deals with the methodological challenges and ethical implications of applying participatory methods with migrant populations. Participatory research is often used as a general term for a variety of research projects using different methods, including action research, collaborative research, community-based research, co-creation or some arts-based projects. This special issue assumes that participatory research involves a different epistemology that allows for new insights, reflections and stories. Consequently, one of its main characteristics is the horizontal relationship between researchers and participants, based on the recognition of all the people involved as equal human beings collaborating on a particular research question. Through the SI, one of the themes that is discussed, from a variety of perspectives in the field of migration studies, is power distribution. The challenge is to achieve a more equal share of power among all those involved in the research process. From the set of articles presented here, another theme that emerges strongly is the struggle for social justice beyond the research process itself. The special issue contains a range of participatory research approaches in the field of migration studies from different parts of the word (Africa, Europe, USA) revealing a growing interest in these methodologies.

U vrijeme pristizanja novogodišnjih čestitki prijatno me iznenadila pošiljka od Roberta Dejardina – novi broj časopisa Collections (88, 2018). (epizoda Boba Morana).

This issue of International Journal on Rule of Law, Transitional Justice and Human Rights in front of you is already the tenth edition of an annual, peer-reviewed academic journal, copublished by the Association “Pravnik” and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s Rule of Law Programme South East Europe. This International Journal is a direct output of the International Summer School Sarajevo (ISSS) which our two organisations co-organise since 2006. Over a period of 13 years, the ISSS has attracted more than three hundred fifty students and young professionals from Europe, Asia and the Americas. After each edition of the International Summer School Sarajevo, our aim was to engage our alumni to contribute to academic discussion with their papers on contemporary topics such as Rule of Law, Transitional Justice or Human Rights. An additional goal is to promote an interdisciplinary approach and build bridges between academia and practitioners in these relevant areas.
