PETRU BEJINARIU (19 IUNIE 1932 – 27 MAI 2021)

Author(s): Marian Olaru / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2022

The following article evokes the personality of Petru Bejinariu, teacher, writer and one of the founding members of the Society for Culture and Literature in Bukovina. His writings (16 books and over 700 scientific articles) are mainly related to biology and pedagogy. He also was interested in the history and culture of Bukovina, participating to many scientific conferences in Romania and abroad. As director of the „Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi” National College in Rădăuți, he coordinated the publishing of several of this institutionʼs yearbooks. DIE MEHRSPRACHIGE BUKOWINA WAR IN SEINER PERSON VEREINT: NACHRUF PROF. OLEH PANTSCHUK

Author(s): Ortfried Kotzian / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2022

Prof. Oleh Pantschuk, the long-time friend of the Bukovina Institute Augsburg, died unexpectedly on February 28, 2022 at the age of 90. Like no other Bukovinian scientist, Pantchuk represented the diverse world of the former Austrian crown land and also the most diverse facets of the times with the various national affiliations of Bukovina. He was of the opinion that the history and culture of Bukovina are an example of the possibility of peaceful coexistence in a multi-ethnic region, that it is important to continue research on the history and culture of Bukovina in international cooperation and to promote contacts between Bukovina and the countries of Central and Western Europe. He was a good mediator between the three Bukovina Institutes in Augsburg, Chernivtsi and Radauti. In 1992 he invited the Universities of Augsburg (Prof. Dr. Fried), Chernivtsi (Prof. Dr. Pantschuk), Jassy/Iaşi (Prof. Dr. Zub), Lemberg/Lviv (Prof. Dr. Grin), Munich (Prof. Dr. Rein) and Warsaw (Prof. Dr. Feleszko) as well as the Bukovina Institute Augsburg (Prof. Dr. Hampel and Dr. Kotzian) to a joint declaration and also to a “Declaration of Intent for Cooperation between the University of Chernivtsi and the Bukovina Institute Augsburg”. It recognized the needs and mutual benefits, namely: exchange of information, i.e. delivery of necessary new and old books, newspapers, documents, etc., at the disposal of the respective institutions; exchange of professionals (historians, cultural scientists, linguists, etc.) both in the field of teaching (lectures, seminars, conferences) and in the field of research (practical studies in universities and archives); organization of foreign language courses (German in Chernivtsi, Ukrainian in Augsburg) with corresponding short practice abroad.

In memoriam: „Prof. univ. dr. em.

Author(s): Marin Voicu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 01-02/2021

Author(s): Mladen Vuković / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 109-110/2022

Author(s): Senad Hadžić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 54/2022

The main aim of this article is to offer facts from the life of the eminent historian Galib Šljivo to the public, primarily to those who have a professional interest in history. Facts can also be a lesson, but also a guide to younger generation and a sign how noticeable results can be achieved with continuous work and great sacrifices. The basic results to which we arrived in this research are presented in two parts: 1. Biographical data and 2. A bibliography of historical papers. In the first part we provide biographical data on prof. dr. Galib šljivo, which was neither easy nor carefree. From his earliest youth he was separated from his parents and his home, and placed in an orphanage in Sarajevo. Even then – instead of wrong paths – he chose the way of learning, education, sacrifice and constant improvement – that is, the only correct and right path. He began his work in higher educational institutions in the academic year of 1972/73 as an external associate of the Pedagogical academy in Banja Luka, and since 2000 as a full-time professor at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tuzla. He went through all the stages of the teaching profession, from elementary school teacher to full-time university professor. He was the initiator and organizer of the establishment of the Historical institute in Banja Luka and its director from its establishment in 1972 to 1992 – where he attained the highest academic title of scientific adviser. The second part of this article contains data on the published work of prof. dr. Galib Šljivo. His scientific opus contains more than 150 bibliographical units, and the highlights of these are twelve monographs totaling 4769 pages. Šljivo based his historical research on unpublished archival material that he collected during his research in the archives of Vienna, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Sarajevo, as well as on the basis of news from the contemporary press, memoirs and literature – through such means he shaped a history of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century. In some of his works (Bosnia and Herzegovina 1788-1812, title “Between two wars 17391787”), he writes about the events from the first half of the 18th century. Šljivo researched an important period in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was not very well known or unknown until his time. He reconstructed the events day by day without superfluous phrases of facts that are not historically relevant. His results were published in his books and monographs, as well as in many newspapers and magazines, among which we can mention the following: the “Istorijski zbornik”, “Jugoslavenski istorijski časopis”, “Gračanički glasnik”, “Zbornik radova Filozofskog fakulteta Tuzla”, “Prilozi instituta za istoriju Sarajevo”, “Stav”, etc. In this way he made the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the end of the 18th and 19th century accessible to those who are professionally interested in history, but also to those who aim to expand their knowledge.

Memories of Dubrovnik’s Global Citizen—Kathy Wilkes

Memories of Dubrovnik’s Global Citizen—Kathy Wilkes

Author(s): Paul Flather / Language(s): English Issue: 66/2022

This is a personal memoir about the life, work and courage of Professor Kathleen Wilkes, a Fellow in Philosophy for 30 years at St Hilda’s College, Oxford University. The article traces—and sets out to explain— particularly her links to Dubrovnik and Croatia and the Inter–University Centre since 1981, and supported strongly through the 1980s and even during the 1990s, remaining on-site during the cruel siege of the city when the IUC suffered a devastating fire. Three key aspects of her life are explored—her work as a significant philosopher of science, her outstanding courage and work in defending academic freedom widely over the East Central European region, and her warm personality and generous friendship. This is why she can be regarded as Dubrovnik’s Global Citizen, the IUC was only too ready and willing to host this conference in her honour.
