Professor Jan Rowiński died on 2 January 2023 in Piaseczno (near Warsaw). He was a member of the Academic Council of the Centre of East Asian Studies at the University of Gdańsk and of the scholarly bi-annual journal Gdańsk East Asian Studies.Jan Rowiński was a professor of the University of Warsaw. As a scholar and a diplomat, he was concerned with China for most of his professional life. He wrote many scholarly articles and books on the politics, culture, and history of China, and his passion for these subjects inspired generations of undergraduates, doctoral students, and colleagues. Inter alia, he owed his knowledge of China and the Chinese to the experience of the many years he spent there first as a student and later as a diplomat. He was born on 11 May 1936 in Kiełpiny. From 1954 to 1959, he studied at the University of Beijing and at the Institute of Diplomacy in Beijing. From the beginning of his studies in Beijing he devoted his entire professional life to the study of East Asia, especially China. He witnessed the transformations that took place in China, and observed the changes in the structures of power there. China had a considerable influence on his way of life. It is difficult to overestimate his contribution to research into that part of the world. His professional life ran on two tracks: on one hand, in diplomacy; on the other, in the academic world. As an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he worked in the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Beijing. Between 1995 and 2001, he was counsellor-minister plenipotentiary and deputy ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the People’s Republic of China. From 1969, he was connected with the Polish Institute of International Affairs, where he held several academic posts, and after completing his habilitation in 1987 was appointed professor there. In 2002, he became professor at the Institute of International Relations of the University of Warsaw in the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, where he worked until 2013. At the University of Warsaw, he conducted classes on the foreign policies of China and Japan, the history and civilization of East Asia, and international relations in the Asia-Pacific region.

In March 2022, twenty years have passed since the death of academician Smail Balić. He was an erudite, an exceptionally skilled Orientalist, a translator, a versatile researcher of cultural and intellectual history, an advocate of dialogue between religions and, most importantly, a humanist. With his work on sources and materials, he left an indelible and deep mark in the study and interpretation of historical and cultural facts from the past of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the wider region. He focused, devotedly and vigilantly watched over the cultural and scientific heritage of Bosniaks, which he studied all his life through his professional and humanitarian work in Austria.

My acquaintance and friendship with Cornell Fleischer extended over a half-century. We were academic brothers in the sense that we were the devoted students of the same teacher at Princeton. Our personal relationship deepened when Cornell became my colleague at the University of Chicago, where we also developed a fruitful professional collaboration in attempting to bring the study of the Islamic world to the highest level for both undergraduates and graduate students. Whether in person or in remote conversation, we shared our ideas, thought, and feelings intimately on personal and professional matters for three decades. His loss is, for me, immeasurable.

Penning this is difficult because it is hard to accept that Cornell H. Fleischer is no longer with us. He was always a radiant presence in my life and in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Cornell H. Fleischer was many things to many people. The readers of this journal will primarily know of him as a renowned scholar. As a former student (M.A. and Ph.D.) and then a friend, I would like to take this opportunity to present a more personal aspect of this scholar whom friends and students shall miss dearly.

In the year 2000, I had a remarkable encounter with Zafer Hoca at Boğaziçi University's South Campus. As I quietly passed by, I offered a gentle nod of respect, and to my surprise, he posed the question, "Have you made your decision?" His ability to remember me left me truly astounded. It was a testament to his enduring intellectual curiosity that he had granted me the opportunity to delve into a thesis topic centered around the dissident figure, Ahmet Samim. This was just one of the many invaluable lessons I gleaned from him. Throughout our academic journey together, which concluded in July 2004, I felt privileged to have the chance to share books and ephemera that I believed would pique his interest. And so, until our paths crossed for the last time on February 22, 2023, I carried this honor with great pride.

I had the opportunity to meet Zafer Toprak during my graduate interview at Boğaziçi University's Atatürk Institute. The atmosphere of his lectures was filled with a unique sense of passion and enthusiasm. Located on the second floor of Yeni Hayat Apartmanı, at Sıraserviler Street No:49, his apartment served as a welcoming space where he graciously hosted guests. He would personally attend to their needs, serving them tea and coffee, never allowing them to lift a finger to assist. Toprak was not a collector, but a dedicated researcher with an extensive collection of books, magazines, and ephemera related to his field. He would meticulously protect his books by individually covering them, ensuring their preservation. He saw his books as a haven, providing him with a dedicated workspace and access to resources in a country where libraries were not readily available. Throughout his life, he used the financial means he had acquired to create this refuge for his books and to secure a space for his research.
