This article attempts to reconstruct the history of Czesław Miłosz’s birthplace, the Šeteniai manor, on the basis of documents found in Lithuanian archives. A search of documents archived in the District of Kaunas turned up a sketch of this manor at the end of the 19th century, from which sketch, the earliest known graphic representation of this area, it is possible to form a judgment about the manor‘s buildings and park. The genealogy of Miłosz’s mother’s family had not been previously extensively researched on the basis of birth certificates, which disclosed interesting facts but also left some puzzles: grandfather Zigmantas Kunatas is identified in his marriage entry as born in Skaruliai parish, Skrebinai manor (not Krasnogrūda); his mother J. Kunotienė died in Šeteniai (not Krasnogrūda). Much information on the history of the Šeteniai manor is provided by documents relating to the 1922 Land Reform in Lithuania: these documents throw light not only on questions of land ownership but also on human relations and questions pertaining to wealth and citizenship; they also allow us to recognize the prototypes of some of Miłosz’s heroes.

Straipsnyje tiriamas 1528 m. Gardino registro 270 vyrų ir 13 moterų įvardijimas. Iš pradžių aptariami vardai, po to – įvardijimo tipai, aprašoma įvardijimo struktūra, palyginamas vyrų ir moterų vardynas, nurodomi baltiški asmenvardžiai, išvardijami netradiciški asmenų užrašymo būdai. Visi įvardijimai metrikuoti: skliaustuose po įvardijimo nurodomas šaltinio puslapis. Names were given to almost all men (98,1 %). The most popular name was John. Christian names were given to 89,1 % of the men; diminutive forms of names were given to 64 % of all Christian names. It has been noticed that in the Orthodox rite there were more name forms than in the Catholic rite. 63,3 % of the names were in Christian patronymic form. The most popular was mixed naming; patronymic forms were given to 64 % of the men. Double naming was the most prevalent (71,1 %). Some men’s anthroponyms were formed consisting of mother‘s, stepfather‘s and fatherin- law’s names. A name was given only to one woman (7,7 %). This article implies the broader context of the ideological debates about dancing and dances in Lithuania in the period from late 19th century to WWII (Karoblis 2011). However, it focuses on the ideological disputes related to dancing during the most sensitive period of Polish-Lithuanian relations from 1920 to 1939. At this time, as a result of the Treaty of Versailles and the turmoil following the WWI, the Klaipėda Region was detached from Germany and annexed to Lithuania. Vilnius, the former capital city of Lithuania, was annexed by Poland and the Constituent Assembly (Steigiamasis Seimas) of the Republic of Lithuania resided in Kaunas, the actual capital of Lithuania at that time. As a consequence, communities of Lithuanian people living in Vilnius (Wilno) and Polish people living Kaunas (Kowno) became hostages of rather hostile political relations between Poland and Lithuania.

The first newspaper of the Lithuanian national revival movement, Aušra (Dawn), came into existence after an unsuccessful attempt to establish a Lithuanian Scholarly Society. It was important to Lithuanian activists, particularly Jonas Basanavičius, that this newspaper be legally available in Lithuania. The coronation of Alexander III in Moscow led to attempts to have Aušra legalized, something encouraged by both pro-Czarist illusions and a belief in Russian predilections for a peasant nation. Seeking to exploit Russia‘s quest at eliminating Polish influence, Lithuanian activists emphasized the danger of Lithuanians becoming Polonized. This opened the door to an undesirable confrontation and marked a change in the relations between the Lithuanian and the Polish national movements, with tensions raised by the Polish insistence, in their press, of regarding the Lithuanians as their “younger brothers.” Jonas Šliūpas, in his answer to the editor of Poznan‘s Polish newspaper, aimed at reaching a compromise, whereas Basanavičius took the position of feeling hurt and wronged. If the latter objected strenuously to Poles calling Lithuanians just a people but not a nation, Šliūpas in his article “Genuinely searching for nationhood” (Aušra, 1884, Nr. 1–3, p. 1–10) argued that the newspaper‘s primary goal was to “make” Lithuanians into a nation. Before a characteristically Lithuanian way had been decisively agreed upon, the divergence in the camp of the Aušrininkai could only be btween the Polonophile and Russophile tendencies. The young Lithuanian activists, especially Šliūpas (the memorandum that he submitted to Warsaw‘s governor-general Iosif Gurka brough an end to efforts at legalizing Aušra) may be considered as pioneers of a not-very-successful but naively pragmatic Lithuanian politics of national re-awakening.

The paper focuses on two concepts of standard language (SL) – the dominant official one and that of ordinary speakers – and raises the issue of whether the speech prevalent in the capital city of Vilnius could be seen as forming modern spoken Lituanian. Unlike the other speech communities where the SL developed from the way people spoke in the capital city, the Lithuanian SL is based on the morphology and phonetics of the southern sub-dialect of West Highland. At the time of the formation of the SL at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th c., Lithuanian was practically not used in Vilnius. Polish and Yiddish were the languages spoken; and in general the question of whom the Vilnius city itself “belonged” to (the notorious “Vilnius Question”) was not solved in favour of the Lithuanian state. Today the situation with Vilnius is completely different: Vilnius is a multilingual city, but Lithuanian is dominant. The language of Vilnius is regarded as the SL by many dialect speakers and the features of it are spreading in the broadcast media. Nevertheless the normative ideology still rules out the possibility that the language spoken by most inhabitants of Vilnius could be viewed as a standard variety. The core element of the official concept of the SL is a correctness and purity that must be regulated and enforced by law. Vilniusian speech is downgraded in the official ideological discourse and due to Polish, Russian, and dialectal interference is held to be a polluted semilanguage. The research was based on 64 interviews, conducted in 2010, with Vilnius-born speakers of different age and social status. The metalinguistic commentaries revealed that in spite of the official ideology the Vilniusian language is scored highest among other varieties of Lithuanian. The citizens of Vilnius base their attitudes on a different concept of SL than the prescriptive one. For them the SL is first of all tied to the language of the capital, and the main criterion of assigment of it to the SL is unmarkedness with respect to dialectal features.

Central Europe, as it is known today in English, stems from the German term for this region, Mitteleuropa. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the first British and American authors who took the cue to comment on this part of the continent closely followed the German coinage, and spoke of Middle Europe. I wonder whether it might have been an influence on J. R. R. Tolkien’s invention of Middle Earth as the setting for his mythic epos, The Lord of the Rings.

This paper aims to introduce the reader to Lithuanian televised memory as reconstructed in the first free international Lithuanian long-lasting media project, the Lithuanians on Television program. This program was shown every Sunday evening at 8:30 P.M. from April 25th 1966 onwards to 1978-1979, when it had to shut down due to financial pressure. Lithuanians on Television told visual stories of Lithuanians living in Chicago and elsewhere. In this paper we will explore what the surviving Lithuanian-American visual stories are able tell us about the factors at work in Lithuanian communities and about the important questions raised therein. We will take a look at the personality and archive of Anatolijus Šlutas, the creator of Lithuanians on Television. The paper presents the problematics of the visual sources and the main influences on the creation of the program. It discusses the contents of the program, and analyzes its goals and the results achieved. It singles out the aims and objectives of the program, as well as their implementation. The paper fastens on the most delicate cultural problems of the Lithuanian community as found in these broadcasts. The cultural bonds of the program and the Lithuanian community are presented, as well as the legacy of the broadcasts, which left clear footprints in the lives of Lithuanian immigrants.
