Presuming that within Evangelical Christianity there is a crisis of biblical interpretation, this article seeks to address the issue, especially since Evangelicals view the existence of the church as closely connected to the proclamation of the Truth. Starting with a position that Evangelical hermeneutics is not born in a vacuum, but is the result of a historical process, the first part of the article introduces the problem of sola and solo scriptura, pointing out some problematic issues that need to be addressed. In the second part, the article discusses patristic hermeneutics, especially: a) the relationship between Scripture and tradition embodied in regula fidei and; b) theological presuppositions which gave birth to allegorical and literal interpretations of Scripture in Alexandria and Antioch. In the last part of the article, based on lessons from the patristic era, certain revisions of the Evangelical practice of the interpretation of Scripture are suggested. Particularly, Evangelicals may continue to hold the Bible as the single infallible source for Christian doctrine, continue to develop the historical-grammatical method particularly in respect to the issue of the analogy of faith in exegetical process, but also must recognize that the Bible cannot in toto play the role of the rule of faith or the analogy of faith. Something else must also come into play, and that “something” would definitely be the recovery of the patristic period “as a kind of doctrinal canon.”

Assuming that marriage, as an institution, relationship and the specific perception of unity, has a special place both in The Old and in The New Testament, we consider that it is important to emphasize the theological position of marriage in and out of the Church. Starting from textual metaphor and poetics, through systematic theology, ecclesiology and pastoral theology, marriage has an important place in the legal, biological, social and spiritual realm. Today, when the marital union, especially in the biblical sense, is threatened we emphasize the vital necessity of theological reflection of marriage, which represents active soteriological segment of existence as well as practical form of expression of faith, crucial for the proper understanding of pastoral theology.

We can only understand 16th century Reformation within the context of Biblical processes of renewing faith and relationship with God, both individually and as the people of God. In the Old Testament, the Bible reports on numerous processes of renewing the relationship between God’s people and God, which in turn inspired reforms in worship. On the other hand, the New Testament emphasizes the establishing of a personal relationship (ie., new birth) with God in Jesus Christ, and a continuing renewal of this relationship throughout one’s life. The Church is renewed through the renewal of the believers. Therefore, we will continue to take note of foundational processes, reasons, characteristics, and fruits of the renewing of faith and the relationship with God both in the Old and New Testaments. These processes have been reocurring during history and have also been evident during the Reformation…

The whole set of beliefs and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, as a Jewish Rabbi, are based and rely profoundly on Old Testament writings and characters, such as Abraham, Moses, David and Isaiah, but also on quotations from the ‘Scriptures’ (the Law, Psalms, Prophets). All of these form a programmatic basis and a common denominators of the teaching and doctrines of Jesus of Nazareth. All of these frequently feature in his duels with traditional religious leaders. The NT Gospels attest to Jesus’ reliance on scriptures, law and the psalms in particular. In comparison with the apostle Paul’s peculiar discontinuity between the two Testaments (cf. 2 Cor 5:17) Jesus’ teaching builds positively on its continuity. In soteriological terms Pauline discontinuity is understandable. On the other hand, from the perspective of Jesus’ teaching, the continuity between the two Testaments is clearly worth investigating. This study considers the importance and the role of the Psalms in Jesus’ life, his teaching, and his death. Psalmodic references or quotations in the Gospels will be examined, particularly (i) in the way in which Jesus himself uses the Psalms, and (ii) how some Psalms are associated with the circumstances of Jesus’ life and death.

The article addresses the major terms and issues regarding the doctrine of baptism in the Spirit in the Charismatic movement. It considers the historical and biblical foundation of the doctrine of baptism in the Spirit, and defines the Charismatic movement. It engages issues of Spirit-baptism such as timing (immediacy or subsequence), stages in Christian growth (second blessing or third blessing), signs accompanying Spirit-baptism (observable or non-observable, normative or descriptive), and the relationship of experience and doctrine. The article shows that baptism in the Spirit is interpreted differently by different charismatic groups in order to accommodate their particular denominational theology – in the historic Protestant churches, in the Roman Catholic Church and in the independent churches. Different groups use different biblical texts in support of their Spirit-baptism pneumatology. Some focus on the descriptive passages of Acts, some on the didactic passages of Paul, while some are aiming for integrative use of those texts and also the passages of John. The doctrine of Spirit-baptism appears divisive on the surface, because of its numerous nuances, but it is actually a common denominator and a strong unifying factor across the charismatic world. The effects of Spirit-baptism are numerous and seen as positive and desirable for personal and church growth.

The teaching of Christ and of the Antichrist have a central place in Flacius’s theological thinking about the church. In his struggle for the truth of the Gospel and the Word of God, Flacius points to the Antichrist and his teaching, which is opposed to the pure Word of God. In this article we will first define terms and provide an overview of biblical teaching about the Antichrist. After that we will outline the theological thoughts about the Antichrist in the time of the Reformation. Flacius’s theological thoughts about the Antichrist, as well as Christ’s versus Antichrist’s teachings, are taken from his works, A Brief Overview of the Faith of Jesus Christ and of the Antichrist (Breves Svmmae Religionis Iesu Christi, & Antichristi, per Matth. Flacium Illyricum), A Paper Against Papal Primacy (Scriptum contra primatum papae, ante annos 100. compositum. Item, Matthiae Flacij Illyrici de eadem materia), and The Catalog of the Witnesses of Truth (Catalogus testium veritatis), as well as from gaining insight into his other works. In his deliberations, Flacius joins the majority of the 16th century Reformers, as well as the numerous gospel preachers in previous centuries, emphasizing that the Word of God is the only and supreme authority in the church. With a strong emphasis on the authority of the Bible, Flacius attempts to challenge the pope’s authority and primacy, thus strengthening the Protestant churches, which were founded during the Reformation, and to weaken the Roman Catholic Church, led by the pope. By comparing the papacy with the Antichrist, Flacius calls the hesitant to turn to God, accept the teachings of the Bible, reject all human teachings and traditions, separate themselves from the Catholic Church, and join theEvangelical Church, whose teaching relies solely on the Word of God.

The presence of power, operating in both obvious and subtle ways in public life, necessitates the development of a Christian ethic of power with which to guide the church and her members in all relational discourse—both with those inside and outside of Christian communities. The core question to be considered in this study is: how are Christians to hold and exercise power? In order to gain an understanding of Jesus’ own conception and use of power, this study focuses on a narrative analysis of the Gospel of Mark, emphasizing the periscope of 10:42-45. Here we find the self-subordinating, atoning action of Jesus in the cross as the primary Scriptural image of a Christian’s own expression of power. In order to address the process of forming a normative ethic from our exegesis, this survey will make use of a critical integration of the ethical methodologies of Richard Hays and Samuel Wells, making use of the narrative’s own imagery of Servant, Sacrifice, Shalom as the Bible’s own formational pattern for Christian ethical formation.

There is considerable confusion present in the Evangelical world when it comes to defining ecumenism. There is no common definition, strategy or goal, unlike in the Roman Catholic Church, which has clearly defined its terms, goals and the main goal of ecumenism in the Second Vatican Council, in the Pope’s encyclicals, as well as some other documents. Even though ecumenism has spread beyond the circle in which it was started, outside of Protestant-Evangelical Christianity, and today includes the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, and even Islam, I will attempt to answer the question in the title by considering the relationship between Evangelical Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church, which has taken a leading role in the ecumenical movement after the Second Vatican Council. In the first section, I will consider the historical emergence of ecumenism in churches which stemmed from the Reformation tradition; I will define the non-biblical term of ecumenism from a biblical standpoint; I will answer the question “why YES to biblical ecumenism”, and I will go on to review some arguments as to “why NO” to the different, expanded ecumenism, i.e. I will answer the question of where the boundaries are, or, what are the specific obstacles for ecumenism outside certain boundaries.

There is a strong scholarly consensus that ώφθη άγγέλοις in 1 Tim 3:16 refers to Jesus being seen by angels at his exaltation. However, the arguments supporting this conclusion are insufficient to justify such uniformity. A fresh analysis of the lexical, contextual, and thematic data suggests that this line refers instead to Jesus’ resurrection appearances. A lexical examination of ώφθη άγγέλοις reveals a better translation: “appeared to messengers.” This translation fits comfortably in its context in 1 Timothy. And thematically it is another witness to the significant NT theme of Jesus’ resurrection appearances.

Referring to contemporary theories of citation, as well as to certain poststructuralist theories of intertextuality (Kristeva, Barthes), and especially to distinctive marks of transtextuality which were given by Genette, this paper examines the role and the function of biblical citations in the travels Seven Seas and Three Oceans by Serbian author Jelena Dimitrijević. The paper points to the paratextual aspects and the intertextual connections of the travels with the Bible as well as with Lamartine's Travel to East. A prompt evocation of relevant passages from the Bible, which follow the chronology of author's visits to holy places in Egypt, Palestine and Syria, provides an authentic referential illusion for the readers, an effect of a truthful, vital and dramatic experience. The historical discourse blends into the biblical one, the past blends with the presence, the sensuous eyes nurture the spiritual ones, triumphing in the religious trance and the power of imagination. Finally, the paper shows how a mosaic of biblical citations and references, which Jelena Dimitrijević refigures in her travels, integrates completely in the illustrative type of citation which represents the family, national and cultural tradition.

This paper explores the extratextual meaning of The Little Prince based on the evocations of biblical associations, namely the associations with Jesus Christ. Biblical motifs and the biblical context are evoked primarily by the title “prince”, since Jesus is called “The Prince of princes” in the Bible, and further congruence and symbolism continues in his physical appearance and in the overall story which is filled with biblical associations and biblical symbols as signals for interpreting the text. Attention is also given to the drawings of the Little Prince where many graphic symbols can be discovered, again connected to the person of Jesus Christ. The text of The Little Prince, therefore, surely cannot be read literally and unambiguously. The analysis is based on indirect meanings and seeks confirmation in the links between the direct, explicit text and the biblical, implicit context.

The sentence ἡ φωνὴ αὐτοῦ ὡς φωνὴ ὑδάτων πολλῶν isn’t very commonly found in the Bible, despite the fact that the subject of God’s voice is one of the main motifs not only in the Old Testament. It’s used twice in Ezekiel and three times in the Book of Revelation. Both connect this motive with God to describe His Identity and deeds. The “many waters” do not only mean force, danger and terrible rule in the Bible. They are also a metaphor for abun-dance, which a good condition for progress, because water gives life. So “the voice as the sound of many waters” is the message of power, liveliness, beauty, and care. It’s so strong a voice that nobody and nothing is capable of overcoming it. Everybody who wants can hear it. It’s like the voice embraced from all sides. The Book of Revelation describes Jesus’ voice (Rev 1 : 15) and the voice from heaven (Rev 14 : 2) in such a way. Also for John, the mystery of internal experience (Rev 19 : 6) avoids any categorization. But for God, it’s the preferred way to communicate with human beings.
