The imperial plans of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine at the end of February 2022 passed to the next stage and took the form of a full-scale war, which covers not only the military, political, economic, but also cultural spheres. The author of this article, starting from this assumption, presents an analysis of the war between Russia and Ukraine from the cultural and anthropological perspective. He refers to the so-called the phenomenon of the “small-Russian nature” of the Ukrainian nation, which, starting from the times of the Russian Empire, influenced the perception of Ukrainians as being secondary to Russians. This situation didn’t change even after Ukraine regained its independence in 1991. Only the events on the Maidan in Kiev, the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of Donbas caused a change in cultural vectors. Ukraine began to forge its own national cultural identity, completely breaking away from what was Russian. The full-scale war, unleashed at the end of February, significantly sharpened this rhetoric, additionally underpinned by the policy of cultural sanctions applied by the West. Therefore, the aim of this article is to present the Russian-Ukrainian cultural war, the consequence of which is the process of shaping an independent Ukrainian cultural awareness.

Student achievement is often the focus of research, both theoretical and practical, with the aim of creating a clearer picture of the factors that contribute to them and, consequently, developing a strategy for improvement in practice. This paper is based on secondary research, and the aim was to research the contribution of students' starting positions to their achievements in mathematics in the TIMSS 2019 study. The results of the research show that the predictor of variables, level of education and enrolment in preschool education programs explain only 59% of the achieved success of students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Northern Macedonia and Serbia, while this contribution has not been confirmed in Albania and Kosovo. Parental support through commitment, support and involvement in school activities as well as the expectation of the child's success, the contribution is 86% and means more to the child's achievement than parental educational status and preschool attendance. Implications indicate that the level of high achievement is approaching countries in which the support and expectations of parents are higher than 86%: students from Northern Macedonia (472 points), Albania (494 points), Serbia (508 points). Therefore, the results of the research can be an important platform for creating educational policy to support parenthood. In addition, there is an obvious need to introduce special measures to improve the work of preschool institutions.

There is an ongoing debate on the changes in the activity of the labour movement in Europe: whether strikes are still the dominant form of action or were they supplanted by demonstrations and civil activism. The question is urgent in countries such as Poland where the number of registered strikes is very low. We verify the hypothesis that the labour movement in Poland shifts from the labour rights to civil rights model of contention in five dimensions: the scale of protest, mobilizing structures, repertoire, claims, and addressees. To avoid pitfalls of relying on official strike data, we use protest event analysis to gather data on workers’ protest from the national press. The conclusion is that the official data on strikes does not reveal the full scope of protest but work stoppages remain the dominant form of action. Results question the reliance on the official strike data to measure labour movement activity.

This paper presents a content analysis conducted with the aim of determining the differences in representation as well as in media coverage and reporting on nurses in Croatia’s daily newspapers at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis in Croatia and in the period before the crisis. The content analysis confirmed the assumption that the number of reports on nursing in the media would be significantly higher than in the previous period, i.e., before the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, during of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were in general positively perceived through the media. This is particularly evident through journalistic forms where the number of reports on nurses/ technicians was 88.89% compared to 11.11% in the pre-pandemic period. The number of interviews with nurses during the pandemic amounted to 95%, compared to 5% in the period before the pandemic, while the number of informative articles amounted to 89.51% during of the COVID-19 crisis, as opposed to 10.49% before the COVID-19 crisis.

The purpose of the deliberations in the article — within the framework of historical sociology — is to reconstruct societal processes between the final decades of the partitions and the modern day forming Belarussian society in terms of community and identity. The matter of interest here is pointing out selected elements of the mechanism behind the evolution of Belarussian society, which in time came to be suspended between the symbolically conceived East and West. To what degree are the problems of today’s Belarussian society rooted in the 19th century and Soviet times? There are undoubtedly three types of community in Poland’s eastern neighbour: the triune Ruthenian nation, the Soviet community, and the national community. The transition in the 19th century from the western to the Russian cultural sphere triggered the adoption of Russian mechanisms of social development, and weakness in the rootedness of the constructs (values) of multi- -generational continuity, including in state institutions, a consequence of which is the distance among a significant portion of Belarussians towards the realities of societal life, which they perceive as external to them. The loss of society’s elites as a result of the Bolshevik revolution and repression of the 1930s resulted in Belarussians becoming an almost exclusively peasant society. Sovietism was imposed on them — unlike, for example, in the Baltic republics — before the formation of national communities.

During the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in the spring of 2020, homeless persons in the Czech Republic were actively protected from the spread of the disease, as were the social workers who work with them; however, this was at the cost of the complete closure of low-threshold night centres and other day-care services during the state of emergency that lasted from March to May 2020. Although homeless shelters did not accept any new clients or visitors, two tent centres were newly established in Prague for example, and homeless persons were accommodated in hotels and hostels, as was the case in other European cities. The main challenge going forward will concern the next wave of the epidemic and the continuation of the enhanced level of assistance initiated during the state of emergency. The aim of the government at this time should be to prevent a mass increase in the number of homeless persons.
