Życie codzienne Anny Jagiellonki w latach 1564–1572

Author(s): Patrycja Czarnecka / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The aim of this article is to reconstruct Anna Jagiellon’s everyday life in the light of her correspondence from the years 1564–1572. Due to her long life, the author focuses only on the short but stable period which began when she had moved to Warsaw in 1564 and ended when her brother, king Sigismund II Augustus, died. Daily life of the royal family member was strictly connected to the idea of a “royal court”. On the one hand, “the court” was defined as an organization consisting of officials, servants and others who were close to the princess but on the other hand, it was also the place where she lived. The article focuses on people who were mentioned in her letters, places where she spent most of her time and her everyday activities.

In comparison with other orders, it presents the alimentation, drinks, hygiene and everyday items used by friars. The main conclusion of the article is a constatation that friars predominantly dined on fat cuisine with plenty of meat and drank a lot of alcohol. The article also introduces the topic of hygiene and health. The monasteries, like all other places in the cities at that time, had bad sanitary conditions. The friars had problems with health, but they also used medical care. The article also shows us everyday items used by friars.

The corset, popular from the 16th to the 20th century, was repeatedly accused of deteriorating women’s health. One of the main concerns among the public and in literature of that time was tightlacing (reducing one’s waist by more than 10 cm), which was believed to cause cancer, consumptions, scoliosis and many other, sometimes deathly, diseases. In order to find if the historical allegations are true, this paper compares the works of 17th to 20th century doctors and publicists, with medical examination of 21st century doctors. The progress of modern medicine excludes most of quoted conditions and clarifies when corsets were safe and when, improperly used, they were dangerous.

The main objective of this paper is to examine different problems of prisoners of war in the Napoleonic era – the question which has not been profoundly elaborated in Polish historiography yet. Conditions and alimentation of prisoners, war crimes and enforced enlisting in the enemy’s armies are the most important issues discussed in the article. Primary sources analyzed by the author were confined to diaries of Polish veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. Soldiers described their personal experience of English, Spanish, Austrian and Russian imprisonment. Therefore, the aforementioned problems were referred in the broader geographical and social context of the first decade of the 19th century.

Why did domestic piano playing become a problem in the late 19th century? In this text I listen closely to complaints about the sounds of piano playing and analyse a multifaceted sonic phenomenon of a girl from a (aspiring) middle class family playing the instrument on a daily basis. I describe how the piano playing became an important part of middle class upbringing but also how it was being criticised, especially in the second part of the century. Most importantly, I focus on a girl and I ponder what role the piano could really play in her life. Following suggestions of Ruth A. Solie I claim that the piano was an important tool for emotional labour and emotion management, not only for the girl but also for the whole family.

Życie codzienne w księżycowej rzeczywistości. Na srebrnym globie Jerzego Żuławskiego jako astronomiczna metafora krytyki społecznej i naukowej przełomu XIX i XX wieku

Author(s): Wojciech Milej / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The main objective of this paper is to examine how Jerzy Żuławski in his novel "Na srebrnym globie" [On the Silver Globe] described Moon’s environment in the context of everyday life. At the end of the 19th century Żuławski’s novel was a prominent example of Polish intellectual atmosphere which can be depicted as permanent sadness, doubt and human inability to create stable predictable future. Also this article underscores the meaning of literary metaphor in a process of describing main problems of the Polish 19th century society. Żuławski used the Moon as a tool to show how different human issues can be filled into another environment but still remain as important and actual as it was on the Earth. Everyday life in this particular case was presented as dangerous and harmful reality that cannot be changed by human knowledge and preparedness for interstellar travels.

Życie codzienne bezrobotnych w Zagłębiu Dąbrowskim w okresie międzywojennym

Author(s): Mateusz Radomski / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article describes a problem of unemployment in the interwar period in the Dąbrowa Basin. It shows how this phenomenon was developing during the years from regaining independence in 1918 to its loss in 1939. In fact, the greatest intensity of this problem falls on the years 1930–1935, during the Great Depression. Unemployment was particularly strong in the Dąbrowa Basin, due to the large number of industrial plants. The article raises issues related to daily life of unemployed inhabitants of this area. It relates to matters such as poverty, social assistance but most of all, it refers to attempts at coping with this reality. The author shows how the unemployed tried to earn their living, not always legally, e.g. by begging, stealing or illegal coal mining. It all adds up to the difficult history of this period. The article uses archives, the press of that time and diaries of the inhabitants.

The main aim of the article is to present the culinary side of the Polish People’s Republic. What was eaten and how? Did the shortage of meat trigger the necessity to become a vegetarian or vegan? What did the average citizen of the Polish People’s Republic spend his money on? The primary source in this case were cookbooks. Not only did they present recipes, but they were important guides for women aspiring to be rational and resourceful housewives. Totalitarian power wanted to control its citizens also in terms of cuisine. Despite the difficulties and problems, cleverness and appropriate strategies allowed people to create simple, quick and, from the present perspective, sophisticated dishes.

Basarabia şi raporturile româno‑sovietice în analize ale diplomaţiei americane la începutul Marii Conflagraţii (1939 – 1940)

Author(s): Emanuel Plopeanu / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

OD OBNOVE DRŽAVNOSTI DO RAVNOPRAVNOSTI BOSNE I HERCEGOVINE U DEMOKRATSKOJ FEDERATIVNOJ JUGOSLAVIJI

Author(s): Miodrag N. Simović,Mujo Demirović / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Publication Year: 0

During the Second World War, the People’s Liberation Movement (PLM) in Yugoslavia had several goals, of which the anti-fascist fight and liberation of the country stood out, as well as the building of a new democratic people’s government, i.e. a new socio-political system. In order to understand this, one must keep in mind the historical outcomes and activities of which stand out: (1) letters from the advanced Bosnian student youth of 1937, 1938 and 1939; (2) the leftist magazine „Putokazi“ from Zagreb, which was published for three years (1937, 1938 and 1939), with a total of 13 issues, edited by Skender Kulenović and Hasan Kikić, Zijo Dizdarević, Hamid Dizdar and Safet Krupić. The editor-in-chief was Šukrija Huskić and (3) the Fifth National Conference of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in Zagreb from 19 to 23 October 1940, which paid special attention to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Understanding the anti-fascist fight of the PLM as a permanent civilizational-existential constant, in which all peoples and nationalities led by the PLM took part, the authors focus on building a new people’s democratic government. At the same time, they emphasize that the center of the PLM was in BiH, especially in Bosnian Krajina, where historical key events were held (two sessions of the National Anti-Fascist Council of People’s Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina - ZAVNOBiH in 1943 - in Mrkonjić Grad and 1944 in Sanski Most and two sessions of the Anti-Fascist Council of the People’s Liberation of Yugoslavia - AVNOJ - in 1942 in Bihać and in 1943 in Jajce). Thus, the development of the PLM and the building of new government in BiH were directly correlated. Eminent scientists (such as academician Enver Redžić) asses that these historical events happened under the pressure of successful development of the PLM and that they would have happened without the instructions of the PLM leadership, which does not question their role at all.

Historiografska literatura i izvori o Bihaćkoj Krajini u dvadesetom vijeku, objavljeni od 2000. do 2017.

In the historiography on the Bihać region (Bosnian: Bihaćka Krajina) and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which refers to the history of the 20th century, in recent years there have been some changes in terms of interest of scientists and researchers on specific topics, as well as in scientific and methodological approach used in their processing. When it comes to topics of interest in scientific circles, from the Second World War to the 1990s, previous studies that emerged during that period mainly covered topics related to World War II and emphasized the role of this area in the Yugoslav war history and sociopolitical and cultural changes after the war. In the last nearly two decades, examining the recent historiographical literature, we can conclude that the Bihać area is partially represented in the literature whose broader thematic frameworks relate to the period of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina and treat social history such as urban development, trade, bey land holdings and military-political history from the occupation in 1878 to the end of World War I, as well as the original cartographic material. Although the Bihać area is not a narrow research topic in this case, it should be emphasized that its representation can be a very important avenue for future researchers, in the broad contextualization of microhistorical subjects, since they are works that certainly represent historiography characterized by an objective research orientation and professional analytical-interpretative approach. From the narrow frameworks for the Bihać region in the Austro-Hungarian period, we can conclude that the topics of education and culture dominate, while local history in other areas is rather neglected. From the interwar period we have several articles that have contributed to a closer acquaintance with the religious and cultural circumstances in the Cazin region (Bosnian: Cazinska Krajina), the way of life and the specifics of agrarian reform. For the period of the Second World War, two books have been singled out, whose authors treat unexplored thematic areas and go beyond the current scientific and methodological approach in the study of this topic, while in the socialist period two events have been singled out, The Cazin rebellion (Bosnian: Cazinska buna) and the Agrokomerc affair (Bosnian: Afera agrokomerc), which have attracted the attention of scientific and professional public as well as the participants who shared their memories. The Cazin rebellion has to this day maintained its attention in the historiographical research of Vera Kržišnik-Bukić, who has made an important contribution to the overall presentation of this event, while some authors and participants have recently updated some issues within the Cazin rebellion with the research of smaller scale and published memory.

Dzienniki czasu wojny

Author(s): Jacek Leociak / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The author focuses on the Second World War, but draws attention to the deep genealogy of the phrase “wartime diaries”, treating them as a special form of recording limit situations in which a person is confronted with violence and death, which go beyond the ways of coping with these experiences, and the community is faced with the horror of mass extermination. Culture and civilization are in a state of catastrophe, destruction and collapse. Examples of records of such experiences in the past include plague logs and pogrom chronicles. The concept of “wartime diaries” has two basic features: 1. they are written in borderline situations and contain a record of borderline experiences; 2. the primary distinguishing criterion is the proximity of the record and the experience. The author presents the topography of diaristic records and the circles of experience they testify to. As for the topography of writing, the observation field was narrowed only to the area of the Warsaw, Łódź, Kraków, Vilnius and Kaunas ghettos. From the various experiences within the thematic spectrum of the diaries, the author presents two: the hunger in the ghetto and the siege of the city of Warsaw and Leningrad. The article proposes to expand the genological area of the diaries and draw attention to diaristic borderlands and genological hybrids. This broadened spectrum of forms would fit between the diary and the chronicle, and between the letters and the diary. There are also “texts in extremis”, which can be considered a unique“ ultimate diaristic record”. This separate group consists of various types of inscriptions on the walls of torture rooms and prisons, places where convicts are held. The act of writing and the moment of experience merge.

Okupacyjne dzienniki i pamiętniki w konfrontacji z dyskursem o polskich Sprawiedliwych

Author(s): Justyna Kowalska-Leder / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The notion of the aid to the Jews during the Holocaust that prevails in the Polish culture has been so detached from the historical truth that it requires intervention in the form of counter-history and the interconnected counter-memory. Access to real experiences from the occupation is provided by numerous testimonies written “there and then,” principally including diaries and memoirs. The recorded experiences of both the Poles and the Jews present unobvious and ambivalent aspects of the aid relations that continued despite the surrounding threats. The article is an attempt to confront the Polish discourse about the Righteous with the testimonies by Brandla Siekierkowa, Karol Rotgeber, Jerzy Feliks Urman, and Calek Perechodnik.

"Dziennik wojenny" Leopolda Buczkowskiego – wyzwanie dla (młodego) edytora

Author(s): Sławomir Buryła / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The paper discusses "Dziennik wojenny" [War Diary] by Leopold Buczkowski. It poses a question concerning the origins of the text and the subsequent stages of its development. That is a challenging task since the original version of the work is not available. Additionally, the lack of the first version makes it difficult to examine the so-called material sphere of the diary. It can be reconstructed only based on the preserved manuscript version. The author of the paper also discussed "Dziennik wojenny" against the background of other early works by Buczkowski ("Wertepy", and "Czarny potok", a collection of a few dozen poems), from the perspective of editorial and philological problems. He also demonstrates the need for a new edition of "Dziennik wojenny", and indicated the errors committed in the existing edition.

„Lata płyną, dzienniczku, a jak tak pragnę życia”

Author(s): Maciej Libich / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article is an attempt to describe the wartime diaries of Anna Pogonowska. Drawing on literary anthropology, genetic criticism and the works of Paweł Rodak, the author of the article describes both the materiality of Pogonowska’s notes, the themes they present, and their pragmatic functions. The author describes the state of anomie and the disintegration of the world in times of war as depicted in the diaries, as well as the feelings of isolation and boredom experienced by the young diarist. Moreover, the author of the article foregrounds the diarist’s discrete allusions to the Holocaust and reflects on her social position during the war.
