The Mystery of the Transmutation of Iron into Copper in the 16th - 18th Centuries

The Mystery of the Transmutation of Iron into Copper in the 16th - 18th Centuries

Author(s): Miroslav Kamenický / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Alchemy is a special branch of learned magic. In Central Europe it was cultivated more than all the other offshoots of learned occultism. Alchemy, like the mentality supporting it, relied on Aristotelian principles. From the point of view of formal logic, the transmutation of metals was close to Catholic transubstantiation. It was close to the thinking of the early modern person whether from the Catholic or the Protestant environments. Experimental activity was cultivated in alchemy. It combined real and practical metallurgy with speculative metaphysics. There were extraordinarily many real stimuli for alchemy in the Habsburg Monarchy. For example, there were gold, silver and copper mines in the territory of present day Slovakia. These were notable for strange mysteries, for which the scientific knowledge of the time could give only speculative explanations.

Weather Magic in the Early Modern Period as Reflected in the Minutes of Witchcraft Trials

Weather Magic in the Early Modern Period as Reflected in the Minutes of Witchcraft Trials

Author(s): Éva Pócs / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In the past few decades I have begun to examine the role that magic played in the lives of village and small town societies in the early modern period, in their mentality, religiosity and belief system. The examination was based on sources related to witchcraft. It is commonly known that the minutes of the witchcraft trials which took place throughout the 16th to 18th centuries are valuable sources with regard to the rural communities of the early modern period, in fact they constitute the only early modern source, which gives a detailed account of the communal role and social background of magic. The witness accounts of these trials reflect almost directly the ‘rural witchcraft’, which took place in the background of the official events and preceded these trials. Contrary to the accused, who may even have been forced by the expectations of elite demonology to make a false statement, the witnesses reconstructed the goings on of their village in the context of traditional witchcraft belief. They relate those of their memories, which can be interpreted as malefactions of a witch in the light of their beliefs. This allows us to gain what might near enough be called direct evidence regarding bewitchment (‘maleficium’) or black magic (or, in fact, its absence, as we shall see in what follows).

Najstaršie a aj najznámejšie pohrebné miesta podľa súčasníkov najvznešenejšieho uhorského rodu Thurzovcov sú vo farskom Kostole sv. Jakuba v Levoči. Okolnosť, okrem iného, podporuje názor o dlho hľadanom pôvode v spišských Betlanovciach. Nejeden hrob príslušníka rodu Thurzo označuje aj náhrobná pamiatka.

Svadobné oznámenia Thurzovcov. (Prameň ku genealogickému výskumu ich rodu)

Author(s): Frederik Federmayer / Language(s): Slovak Publication Year: 0

Súčasný moderný historický výskum spoločenských elít a osobitne aristokracie v Uhorsku sa nemôže zaobísť bez bližšieho skúmania príbuzenských a rodinných vzťahov uhorských magnátskych rodov.

Based on various historical sources, the article shows everyday life of Polish Franciscan friars in the 18th and at the beginning of the 19th century. In comparison with other orders, it presents the alimentation, drinks, hygiene and everyday items used by friars. The main conclusion of the article is a constatation that friars predominantly dined on fat cuisine with plenty of meat and drank a lot of alcohol. The article also introduces the topic of hygiene and health. The monasteries, like all other places in the cities at that time, had bad sanitary conditions. The friars had problems with health, but they also used medical care. The article also shows us everyday items used by friars.

The corset, popular from the 16th to the 20th century, was repeatedly accused of deteriorating women’s health. One of the main concerns among the public and in literature of that time was tightlacing (reducing one’s waist by more than 10 cm), which was believed to cause cancer, consumptions, scoliosis and many other, sometimes deathly, diseases. In order to find if the historical allegations are true, this paper compares the works of 17th to 20th century doctors and publicists, with medical examination of 21st century doctors. The progress of modern medicine excludes most of quoted conditions and clarifies when corsets were safe and when, improperly used, they were dangerous.

The article focuses on the issue of piousness of Catholic soldiers of the Crown Army in the Vasa period on the basis of their wills. Six professional soldiers’s wills entered in the books of the town court in Lublin in the years 1621–1655 were analysed. The sources made it possible to distinguish the attitude of soldiers towards God and death, as well as to analyse the records for religious purposes: churches, monasteries and charitable causes. The article also deals with the issue of money donated for masses for the souls of deceased soldiers.

Author(s): Wiktor Stypczyński / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The Royal Navy was the backbone of Britain’s defence system for centuries. During the late 18th and early 19th century this led to a situation where it was in a state of constant war for over 20 years. This article aims to show the daily life of the crews of Royal Navy’s ships during the height of its power in the Nelson Era. It presents aspects of the daily service on board of ships, the food of the crews as well as the elements of everyday naval culture manifested in the ethos of service at sea. In order to discuss the topic, the paper also shows a sample career pathway explaining the motivations of seafarers.

The main objective of this paper is to examine different problems of prisoners of war in the Napoleonic era – the question which has not been profoundly elaborated in Polish historiography yet. Conditions and alimentation of prisoners, war crimes and enforced enlisting in the enemy’s armies are the most important issues discussed in the article. Primary sources analyzed by the author were confined to diaries of Polish veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. Soldiers described their personal experience of English, Spanish, Austrian and Russian imprisonment. Therefore, the aforementioned problems were referred in the broader geographical and social context of the first decade of the 19th century.

Why did domestic piano playing become a problem in the late 19th century? In this text I listen closely to complaints about the sounds of piano playing and analyse a multifaceted sonic phenomenon of a girl from a (aspiring) middle class family playing the instrument on a daily basis. I describe how the piano playing became an important part of middle class upbringing but also how it was being criticised, especially in the second part of the century. Most importantly, I focus on a girl and I ponder what role the piano could really play in her life. Following suggestions of Ruth A. Solie I claim that the piano was an important tool for emotional labour and emotion management, not only for the girl but also for the whole family.

The main aim of the article is to present the culinary side of the Polish People’s Republic. What was eaten and how? Did the shortage of meat trigger the necessity to become a vegetarian or vegan? What did the average citizen of the Polish People’s Republic spend his money on? The primary source in this case were cookbooks. Not only did they present recipes, but they were important guides for women aspiring to be rational and resourceful housewives. Totalitarian power wanted to control its citizens also in terms of cuisine. Despite the difficulties and problems, cleverness and appropriate strategies allowed people to create simple, quick and, from the present perspective, sophisticated dishes.

In north-east Slovakia, complex as well as simply-forged crosses have survived at sacral buildings and in museum collections. Craftsmanship and artistic sense of the blacksmiths in the 17th to 19th century made from forged crosses, placed on churches, bell towers and chapels an interesting picture of folk plastic art, which however was conditioned by theological teaching, regulated, and controlled by church dignitaries. The basic types of crosses are enriched by a lot of other symbols and signs crafted as one unit. Some forged crosses can be found at their original place and in their original function even today, some others are not complete, or crosses of the basic shape replaced them later, because the signs and symbols gradually lost their importance in human mind or because the Christian learning and its interpretation changed. The basic types of crosses, the signs used and the symbolism of the crosses and combinations thereof say something about the time of their origin. The applied signs created an ideogram, but mostly more ideograms connected into one unit. Every forged cross not only is a set of signs or ideograms, but – to a certain extent – also an artistic element making the whole building complete.

Jaku albansku koloniju nalazimo i u Bugarskoj, u Čiprovcu, Kopilovcu i Železnoj. Imaju i svoje albanske svećenike franjevce, među kojima prednjači Cabashi fra Nicolaus, kojega drugi dokumenti zovu fra Nicolo-Albanese (Fermendžin).

Křesťanské misie 17. a 18. století: otázka kulturní identity a porozumění

Křesťanské misie 17. a 18. století: otázka kulturní identity a porozumění

Author(s): Jiří Hanuš,Tomáš Malý / Language(s): Czech Publication Year: 0

Author(s): Kerima Filan / Language(s): Bosnian Publication Year: 0

Versed dictionaries in the Ottoman literary tradition are smaller dictionaries, typically containing several hundred words of one language interpreted with semantic matches in another language. The words are arranged according to the metrical feet of Arabic metrics and principles of rhyming in a specific poetic form. The most numerous are those featuring lexicons of two or all three languages of Ottoman culture: Arabic, Persian and Turkish. Words are listed in a sequence so that those that are mutually interpreted in terms of meaning stand next to each other and only one meaning is given. The lexical material is divided into several units, or longer stanzas, each in a different poetic meter, with varying poetic forms.. They are intended for learning by heart with the aim of acquiring the basic lexicon of a second language and for getting to know the metrics and characteristics of poetry. The originality of versed dictionaries lies in the author’s choice of vocabulary and the poetic skill of composing verses with words from different languages. They represented basic literature at a lower level of language learning. They were used in both public and private education throughout the Ottoman period. The paper provides an overview of the tradition of writing versed dictionaries in the Ottoman period. It refers to Uskufi’s 17th-century Turkish-Bosnian verse dictionary Makbûl-i ʿÂrif as part of that tradition. The structure of versed dictionaries is described as their common characteristic exemplified by verses from various dictionaries, including Uskufi’s Turkish-Bosnian dictionary.

Židé a židovský hřbitov v obci Útvina

Author(s): Lukáš Svoboda / Language(s): Czech Publication Year: 0

It was perhaps as early as the first half of the 17th century that the first Jewish families settled in the village of Útvina (Uitwa) in the south-eastern part of the Karlovy Vary region. The local Jewish community, which consisted of only a few families throughout the period under study, also had its own synagogue from the beginning of the 18th century. Its houses and synagogue were often damaged by flooding and fire. After the middle of the 19th century, the Jews gradually left the village for larger settlements. By 1900 there were no longer any Jews living in the village. The Jewish community in Útvina owned a cemetery, which today is one of the few reminders of its former existence. The oldest tombstone to have been found dates back to 1782. The cemetery was badly damaged during the Second World War. In the following years, the tombstones were used for construction purposes and the cemetery area gradually became wooded over. The theft of tombstones has continued until the present day. In connection with the discovery of broken tombstones during excavation work on a plot of land in the nearby village of Přílezy in 2020, it was subsequently decided, for safety reasons, to move the two remaining tombstones from Útvina to the Jewish cemetery in Karlovy Vary.

Author(s): D.V. Andriyevskiy,M. V. Fomkin / Language(s): Russian Publication Year: 0
