The town of Oświęcim (Auschwitz) and the areas in western Small Poland that lay near Oświęcim (Auschwitz) were separated from Small Poland district during the time when Poland was divided into smaller self-governed territories, in the 13th century. Th ose territories were not part of the Polish Kingdom united by Władysław Łokietek in 14th century. Th e principality of Oświęcim (Auschwitz), which originated at the beginning of 14th century, was under the rule of Czech from 1327 to 1462. Between years 1327 and 1445 Wadowice belonged to this principality. Not until 1454 it recognized the supervision of Polish king and in 1457 it was bought out by Polish king Kazimierz (Casimir) Jagiellończyk . In 1462 during a convention of Polish and Czech monarchs in Głogów, in Silesia, Czech king resigned from the terrains of Oświęcim (Auschwitz). Th e defi nite joining of Oświęcim (Auschwitz) principality to Polish Kingdom, in terms of legal system, took place in Warsaw in 1564 during the general Polish Parliament. From then on, Oświęcim (Auschwitz) land became an important part of Poland and from 1564 to 1772, as Silesia county in Small Poland province, it still kept some of distinct traits as it comes to its political system.

The purpose of the study is to establish the influence of the tradition in relation to the silver coin on the peculiarities of monetary circulation, as well as to introduce into scientific circulation an unusual treasure of dirhams found in the area of the archaeological site of Prisyrdarya Bozok in 2014. During the study of the treasure of Chaghatayid dirhams of the late XIII — early XIV centuries, there were found 117 coins in its composition, including the presence of 12 of their fragments. This is an unusual fact for the conversion of Chaghatayid dirhams, which has not previously been noted in the scientific literature. Isolated finds of fragments of the same dirhams indicate their use in coin circulation. It is established that this is due to the ancient tradition of breaking silver coins and using these fragments in monetary circulation. The article describes in detail the composition of the treasure that was found in the area of the archaeological site of Prisyrdarya Bozok. Hiding the treasure took place q. 700/1301—1302.

This study deals with the history of plague in the East Carpathian area in the 15th century and the second half of the 19th century. The principalities were exposed to the risk of contamination from commercial transactions and military operations. Between 1400 and 1800 in the Romanian Principalities some serious epidemic waves evolved. In Moldova and Wallachia, the disease spread mainly during the wars, being brought by the occupation troops and the crews of the merchant vessels. So between 1768 and 1830 the plague became almost endemic. Since the 19th century there have been more effective sanitary measures to fight the disease, especially during the Russian administration of General Kiseleff. The press begins to publish tips for treating the disease, and a whole memoir literature is dedicated to the scourge. The cholera was manifested after 1873, but not with the same intensity and extent as before.

The medieval town Bârlad fair has been known to have an ascendant evolution from the beginning of the reign of princeps Alexandru cel Bun and, especially, under Ştefan cel Mare, Petru Rareş, Ieremia Movilă and Vasile Lupu, in terms of demographic, economic, urban, but also commercially. Located on the lower valley of the Bârlad River and at the crossroads of the commercial roads connecting the cities of the Baltic Sea (in the Canezate of Halici) with the Danube and the Black Sea, the town Bârlad fair has also seen growth and decline, greatness and decay. The medieval town Bârlad met in the XV-XVIII centuries an important and efficient trade activity, due to its age and political and economic importance in the country of Moldova, but also because of its strategic location on the international trade road linking the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, meaning Poland by the Ottoman Empire.

The present article is concerned with the linguistic aspects of the Book of Job’s translations within their canonical contexts. Lexical correspondences to the Hebrew, Greek or Latin originals in Church Slavonic, Polish, and Ruthenian (prosta(ja) mova) are compared on the material of Vilnius Old Testament Florilegium (F 19–262) (approx. 1517–1533), the Radzivill Bible (Biblia radziwiłłowska) (1563), the Nesvizh Bible (Biblia nieświeska) (1568–72) by Symon Budny, Bible (Biblia Ruska) (1517–1519) by Francis Skoryna, and Ostrog Bible (1580–1581) by Ivan Fyodorov. Establishing the similitude and difference between the texts of the original biblical culture, the translators of the church culture created a new synthesis of their interpretations, including their exegetical and cultural values. On the other hand, describing translations parallel to the original Hebrew text or to the main church-canonized translation, one can see the tendency of influence and interrelation between the new translations that belong to different confessions.

The Counts of Krk (Frankapan) probably originated from the island of Krk, from where their territorial expansion started. They acquired their earliest possessions, Vinodol and Modruš, in the first half of the 13th century. By the 15th century, they had accumulated considerable possessions in Croatia and Slavonia. Thus, they had to appoint officials through whom they could govern and effectively obtain revenues. This paper deals with their clientele in Vinodol. At the top of the hierarchy among the Counts’ clientele was the retinue (familia / familiares), followed by officials (officiales) and servants (servitores). Being a member of one of these groups did not exclude belonging to another, i.e. it was possible for a viscount (vicecomes) to be part of the Counts’ retinue. However, there was no reason for every official (even a viscount) to be part of the retinue. At the time of the Vinodol Law (1288), the highest official in all of Vinodol was the dvornik (magister curiae). Later on, he was replaced by a number of viscounts, who became the highest-ranking officials in the Counts’ apparatus. The number of viscounts varied in the sources through the centuries and it seems that it corresponded to the number of Counts who had the Vinodol County in their possession. The family division of all possessions (among them Vinodol) in 1449 resulted in a new organizational structure and the number of viscounts probably corresponded to the number of Counts who had divided the county among themselves. In the 15th century, as the sources show, there were also a captain (capitaneus) and a vice-captain, the former apparently having the same status as a viscount. The Counts had their own courts, organized on the similar model as the courts of the Hungarian kings. The first in the hierarchy among their courtiers was the dvornik (magister curiae), followed by the castellan (castellanus), the cupbearers (dapifer), and the cellarers (Cr. konobar, Lat. cellerarius). This was probably done in effort to make an impression on others and to compete with the magnates of the kingdom. All Counts of Krk had a similar structure of officials on their estates in the Kvarner littoral.

The Saint Florian Psalter (Warsaw, BN 8002 III) is the oldest existing Polish psalter, of unknown provenance until the 1550s. An erased owner’s note from the fifteenth century (f. Iv) has been largely omitted in research. The article presents this note as well as an identical one in another codex (Vienna, ÖNB, Cod. 1352). What follows is an identification of the owner, Hans Siebenlinder (d. 1438/1440), an eminent patrician of Buda. A short resume traces his activities in Hungary, and is followed by an overview of his contacts with the Kingdom of Poland. The last part of the article presents the importance of this identification for future research into the history of the Psalter but also into the phases of its creation.

The article presents a new edition of the original fragments of Wigand von Marburg’s chronicle that have been preserved. In the introduction, the author discusses its manuscript basis, taking into account its previous editions and the editorial principles. The edition includes a total of eleven fragments of the original text of the chronicle in verse, written in 1393–1394 in Middle High German. These fragments have survived as remains of two late-medieval manuscripts and in the sixteenth-century edition of Caspar Schütz’s chronicle. The original text is supplemented by the relevant extracts of the Latin translation of the chronicle, based on its new edition published in 2017.

At many times in their history, humans have faced major epidemics. The “Black Death”, which broke out in the middle of the 14th century, is believed to be the deadliest one. The total number of the deceased population and the scale in many ways had a dramatic impact on the course of subsequent historical events. Until recently, the myths dating back to the Middle Ages have prevailed in scientific circles. They have remained unrevised despite the latest achievements in the research on the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, the history of climate and medicine, and the extensive published data, making it of an interest to both reconsider certain established dogmas and reconstruct the algorithm of the course of major plague epidemics from the historical past using the results of the available paleogenetic, epidemiological, and climatological studies. This triggered our discussion on the nonlinear nature of the course of plague pandemics. The analysis of the historical sources showed that the scale and speed of the spread of plague epidemics in new territories directly depended on the degree of inclusion of cities and regions of the Afro-Eurasian space in the economic system of the Great Silk Road, the proximity to various epidemic centers of plague. The decisive influence of the anthropogenic factor on the duration and main directions of the spread of plague epidemics was revealed. The multivariate onset and course of pandemic plague waves were recognized. Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact place where the spread of the plague epidemics ended or to identify their consequences.

This study explores the status of the Bohemian system of notation in Central Europe and the identity of the scribes and notators of specific mediaeval manuscripts from Slovakia, Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, Hungary and Romania. Especially in the latter half of the fourteenth century and in the course of the fifteenth century, Bohemian notation became an important export product (article) which also appeared outside the territory of the mediaeval Kingdom of Bohemia. Active scriptoria, or migrating scribes, illuminators and notators, created a large number of liturgical manuscripts which reveal valuable information about their activities and migrations. Several sources point to various combinations with respect to the identity of the manuscripts, with the liturgy or the musical contents representing the customer and the notation representing the creator of the particular source, such as in Antiphonary CCl. 65 – 68 (Augustinian Library in Klosterneuburg), Bratislava Missal “D” Clmae 216 from the Library of the Bratislava Chapter (National Széchényi Library in Budapest) or the Antiphonary Varadinense (Diocesan Seminary Library Győr + Fragments from Austria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia).
