Antropocen

RazmišljajućI u »dubinskom geološkom vremenu« ili »dubinskom libidinalnom vremenu«

Author(s): Ariel Salleh / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

U konačnici, svaka ekološka svijest zahtijevat će sposobnost razmišljanja u »dubinskom libidinalnom vremenu« (deep libidinal time).

Antropomorfizam danas – sudbina Protagorina impulsa

Antropomorfizam danas – sudbina Protagorina impulsa

Author(s): Josip Guć / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 02/162/2021

In this paper I examine the role of anthropomorphic thinking today, especially in bioethics. In this context, the ban on anthropomorphism, which was until recently considered almost as an axiom, is particularly significant. The first part of the presentation considers the justification and consequences of this ban, where I especially refer to the insights of Hans Jonas. The second part of the presentation tries to offer answers to the issue of justification of anthropomorphism in bioethics, where the connection between anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism is also examined. Anthropocentrism is often considered as one of the main premises of in some way already actual ecological apocalypse. By playing with metaphors, one can set the fundamental question of this presentation as follows: does anthropomorphism originate from the “heart of darkness” that spawned the “apocalypse now”?

Application LCA for eco-efficiency assessment of investments projects

Application LCA for eco-efficiency assessment of investments projects

Author(s): Joanna Kulczycka,Marzena Smol / Language(s): English Issue: 16/2015

Eco-efficiency which takes into account the life cycle idea is a relatively new concept described by ISO International Standard 14045:2012. It can be used in environmental management by integration environmental considerations with economic analysis to improve products and technologies. Nowadays, eco-efficiency is a strategic tool and it is one of the key factors of it sustainable development. In the investment decision-making process, to assess new technology solutions and to choose the best options, the eco-efficiency account should be introduced. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a method used to assess environmental aspects and quantified impacts of investment project is proposed. Life cycle cost analysis being the combination of Net present value (NPV) with life cycle cost (LCC) was chosen for quantifying their financial effects. The eco-efficiency analysis based on LCA can be recommended not only as a decision support tool for individual investors, but also for ranking of investment projects when applying of financial support from structural or other national funds, as well in sustainable public procurement.

ASEAN-5 Ülkelerinde Ekolojik Ayak İzi Yakınsaması: SURADF ve SURKSS Birim Kök Testi

Author(s): Havanur Ergün Tatar / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2022

The ecological footprint is helpful for observing the impact of human activities on the environment. Especially considering the importance of the concept of a sustainable environment and the environmental policies of the countries, the ecological footprint is a comprehensive indicator. In this study, instead of CO2, the carbon footprint is preferred as an indicator to analyze environmental pollution from a broader perspective. In addition, ecological footprint convergence is examined with a different method. At this point, it is expected that the study will contribute to the literature. In the study, ecological footprint convergence is analyzed in ASEAN-5 countries. For this, the 1973-2017 period is chosen. In the study, SURADF and SURKSS unit root analyses are performed. According to the end of the analysis, it has been determined that the ecological footprint is stable in all countries examined. In other words, convergence has proven to be valid in ASEAN-5 countries.

Aspecte ale securităţii energetice în politica internaţională: resurse, probleme, strategii

Aspecte ale securităţii energetice în politica internaţională: resurse, probleme, strategii

Author(s): Șerban Filip Cioculescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2013

Energy is one of the most sensitive issues on the security agenda of states and human communities. Because of the scarcity of resources, the depletion of non-regenerable resources and their highly unequal distribution across the globe, there is a need to rationalize consumption and identify alternative non-poluting sources. At the same time, bio-fuels create problems for the environment and are controversial for diverting food from poor nations in the Third World, while atomic energy carry the risk of natural and man-made disasters like the Fukushima example. Great powers but also alliances often draft strategies to deal with access to energy, at the same time trying to avoid typical problems related to hyper-abundance of resources which generate corruption, authorities tendencies and drops of the national currencies. Romania still possess important amounts of natural energy but it cannot avoid dependence on importations and it is highly interested in establishing privileged partnership and co-participate in pipelines building in order to avoid dependence on Russia and get access to Caspian and Black Sea gas and oil.

Aspects of Eco-Identity in the Recent History of Protests in Romania

Author(s): Costel Coroban,Andrada Munteanu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Given the ideational debate launched by Michel Foucault by asserting the theory of "biopower" in Surveiller et punir (1975), which showed that "domination" in society is increasingly exercised not through regulations, but through control of the body, this paper brings to the fore the perspective of ecological identity in the wake of events such as ecological protests taking place in the last decade in Romania. Thedevelopment of eco-identity is a novelty in Romania and is little developed at a theoretical level in our country. Nevertheless, the concept of eco-identity is a popular and important topic both nationally and internationally. The historical comparative approach is used in order to apply theories of ecological risk perception to conflict situations such as the protests against the Roşia Montană Gold Corporation or the spontaneous protests against Chevron in Pungeşti. A conclusion of the study is that, in some instances, the foreigner is seen from two perspectives by Romanians. First, as a guide and pioneer in developing eco-tourism and, second, as an exploiter. Although Romanians are sometimes involved in conflict with the imagined foreigner, represented by foreign companies which have attempted to carry out polluting economic activities on the territory of their country, foreigners are also those who have helped develop the country towards a healthier environment through the influence of international environment organizations and have promoted Romania's unique nature-centered traditional style of life abroad.

Assessment Methodology for Resource-Efficient Development of Organizations in the Context of the Green Economy

Author(s): Irina A. Markina,Antonina V. Sharkova / Language(s): English Issue: 30/2014

The paper deals with the problem of forming comprehensive methodology for determining the level of economic, social and environmental performance of all organizations. The system of indicators that allow an individual to make a forecast of the development of economy under the conditions of its transition from “brown” to a “green” one is proposed by authors. These indicators can be grouped into three categories: indicators of economic transformation, indicators of progress and well- being, and indicators of resource efficiency. An assessment methodology for resource- efficient development at the macro level was created in accordance with the international standard of the Global Reporting Initiative and methodology for sustainable development of the industrial organizations. This methodology is based on specific categories of indicators of organization’s sustainable development, such as the indicators of economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability. The main stages in the formation and implementation of the methodology in the performance of an organization are presented in the given paper.

Benchmarking jako narzędzie doskonalenia organizacji w obszarze społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu

Benchmarking jako narzędzie doskonalenia organizacji w obszarze społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu

Author(s): Agata Lulewicz-Sas / Language(s): Polish Issue: 6A/2013

The process of improvement of the organisation involves the use of a variety of management tools. One of them is the benchmarking which indicates the comparison to the best and identifies the ways of achieving better results. Benchmarking can also be used as a tool to improve organisation in the area of CSR (corporate social responsibility), defined as one of the forms of implementation of sustainable development in companies. The purpose of author’s consideration is to provide guidelines for benchmarking in the area of CSR. CSR is implemented in order to achieve integrated governance, linking together the following elements: economic governance, ecological governance, social governance, corporate governance (management). Integrated governance should be treated as the benchmark, that is, the final model. Benchmarking is the process of implementation of various activities in order to achieve the integrated governance. The CSR benchmarking process, as well as indicators to assess the organisation in the scope of the CSR have been proposed in this article. On the basis of the analysis it can be concluded that in the area of CSR the subject of comparison may be the results/outcomes of implemented CSR activities (result benchmarking), and processes to achieve results/effects (process benchmarking).

Bernard Charbonneau’s Ecological Reflection on Violence and War in Society, the State and Revolution

Bernard Charbonneau’s Ecological Reflection on Violence and War in Society, the State and Revolution

Author(s): Christian Roy / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

A pioneer of political ecology, Bernard Charbonneau (1910-1996) viewed freedom and nature as jointly threatened by the “second nature” of technological society (whose critique by his friend Jacques Ellul owed much to him), defined by total mobilization as revealed in world wars as in industrial development. Its roots intertwine with those of the modern State made possible by the Christian distinction of the spiritual from the sacred violence inherent in religion and politics, returning unchecked in both guises. Charbonneau’s thought thus provides an ecological counterpoint to René Girard’s mimetic theory.

Bilans otwarcia dla tematyki badawczej dedykowanej perspektywom rozwoju turystyki w wybranych obiektach hydroenegetycznych województwa łódzkiego

Author(s): Joanna Sołtuniak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2011

The purpose of this article is to determine the prospects for tourism development at hydroelectric facilities in the Lodz region, as well as outline the policy framework for the development of this type of tourism product. The inspiration to take the issues was the increasing number of hydropower plants (also in the Lodz region), their importance in the context of environmental protection, the production of energy without producing exhaust fumes and ashes, and location (often found in natural and attractive tourist destination). These sites can become an opportunity not only to visit, but also of the broader education in the field of environmental protection and renewable energy sources (children, adolescents and adults - businessmen, skeptics, opponents and supporters), which can contribute to sustainable development.

Biodiversity and dynamics of plant groups of Chebket El Melhassa region (Algeria)

Author(s): B. Maamar,B. Nouar,L. Soudani,M. Maatoug,M. Azzaoui,M. Kharytonov,O. Wiche,O. Zhukov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

This article examines phytoecological aspects of plant groups in the Chebket El Melhassa region (Tiaret-Ouest Algérien) by several types of analysis: biological, biogeographic and statistical. From the plant analysis, a list of 103 taxa distributed in 36 families was compiled, biologically characterized by a dominance of therophytes (45.6%) with species of the Mediterranean biogeographic type 20 species (19.8%) assuming particular importance. The ordination of the plant community was performed in the search for the optimum solution based on correlation with environmental factors, estimated using the phytoindication approach. The results reveal that the plants represented in the community, mostly prefer strongly lit places. Phytoindication shows a warm sub Mediterranean climate. Continentality corresponds to the sub-oceanic climate. The moisture regime ranges from strongly dry to dry soil. The plant community is formed on moderately acid soils. Plants are able to grow on both strongly acidic and neutral soils. The soil is very poor or poor in nitrogen. A four dimension variant of multidimensional scaling procedure was selected as the most appropriate decision. Dimensions selected after nonmetric multidimensional scaling were interpreted by computing weighted average scores of ecological factors for ordination configuration. Four of the plant species clusters were found to be the optimal solution on the basis of the Calinsky-Harabasz criteria. The clusters can be viewed as a functional group. Functional group A is quite diverse and represented by 42 species. This functional group is closest to the community optimum because in all four space dimensions the corresponding cluster is near the origin, which corresponds to the most typical ecological conditions. Species that constitute the group B prefer minimum values of dimension 2. This indicates a preference for illuminated sites with high temperature regime and low soil humidity. This group includes 32 species. A feature of group С is that it is located in the area of maximum values for dimension 2. Thus, this functional group is opposite to functional group B. This indicates a preference of species included in the functional group C for wetter soils. Functional group C comprises 21 species. Functional group D differs considerably from all others in its ecological characteristics. The difference is in the preference for minimum values for measurement 1. This suggests that more acid soils are optimal for a given functional group. Functional group E comprises 8 species.

Biotopes of Aedes vexans development in the long flood-plain forest of the Dnipro river

Author(s): N. V. Voronova,O. Y. Pakhomov,V. V. Gorban’ / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2005

The aim of the research was to estimate the role of different types of biotopes in a formation of the Aedes vexans high ecological valency. The greatest number of Ae. vexans mosquitoes procreate in basins with the moderate density of larvae (49.6–70.2 %), less mosquitoes procreate in basins with the high one (15.9–19.0 %). The optimal and effective density for the development of mosquitoes larvae in temporary basins of a long while flooded forest of the Dnipro river is 350–1700 specimens/m2, that’s why it is necessary just to pay attention to them during taking measures on reducing their numbers.

BİR SÜREÇ OLARAK HOŞNUTSUZLARIN ÇEVRECİLİĞİ: HİNDİSTAN’DAN SARDAR SAROVAR BARAJI ÖRNEĞİ

Author(s): Defne Gönenç,Alper Almaz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2018

In the neoliberal era, which redefines the power relations among the state-market-society-nature, the environmental movements differ in terms of their participants. Arsel, Akbulut and Adaman created the concept of “environmentalism of the malcontent” that moves beyond the distinction between the “environmentalism of the rich,” and the “environmentalism of the poor”. The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the concept of the “environmentalism of the malcontent”. The study was undertaken by evaluating the participants of the environmental movement against the Sardar Sarovar Dam, located on the Narmada River in India, by undertaking qualitative research methods. Data is collected through individual and group interviews, and non-participant observation method during the field trip undertaken in India. In the article, it is argued that if the environmental movements are elaborated as a process which have transformative effects on its participants, the concept of the “environmentalism of the malcontent” can be used to define the environmentalism of not only the ones with the middle-class qualities, but also that of other groups in the environmental movement.

Biskupi czasów przedrozbiorowych w świetle propagandy antykościelnej prowadzonej przez władze polityczne Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej2 w latach 1944–1989

Author(s): Piotr Jaworski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2016

One of the fundamental ideological goals of communists coming into power in Poland after the end of the World War II was the fight against religion. The goal resulted in the marxist-leninist ideology (based on dialectical and historical materialism) which rejected the existence of God. No wonder that the contemporaneous political authorities supported by the ideology mentioned above towards wide spread devotion of the society treated the Church as the opponent which can make them less powerful. Hence, the People’s Republic of Poland (PRP) authorities used in a different intensity the policy of repression and condemnation against the Church in years 1944–1989. Anti-church propaganda became the crucial element of the government’s policy. The propaganda covered various aspects of life and functioning of the Church. The present article highlights the political propaganda of the PRP and what was carefully underlined was the fact how the propaganda presented particular bishops from old Polish times showing at the same time, based on certain examples, manipulation, lies, and lack of reliability and objectivity of the contemporaneous propaganda.
