“Greying population”: Economic, social, and ethical appreciation of old age

“Greying population”: Economic, social, and ethical appreciation of old age

Author(s): Mieczysław Gałuszka / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2018

As the population is growing older, sociologists and economists are becoming more interested in analyzing this phenomenon. There are two paradigms for interpreting old age. The first one points to excluding old people from social and economic life. It is argued that there should be a balance between activities and possibilities of old people. The other paradigm points to the social, political and economic activities of old people until the end of their lives. It emphasizes their life experience and competencies. The article presents new processes and socio-cultural phenomena that refer to seniors. Some of them are negative like ageism, social isolation, deprivation, the uncertainty of fate and existence. Others are positive and described as “the cult of age” like the dynamic expansion of the grey people industry, development of health care and consumer projects for the elderly. The article argues that the sense and dignity of life of the elderly should be defended, as it is the main motivation and reason for living.

“Stop … and Remember”: Memory and Ageing in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Novels

Author(s): CATHERINE CHARLWOOD / Language(s): English Issue: 31/2018

This article foregrounds representations of ageing and memory within Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels, particularly Never Let Me Go (2005) and, the less critically considered, The Buried Giant (2015). While criticism and reviews touch upon themes of ageing, loneliness, and loss of bodily function, scholars are yet to reveal either the centrality of this to Ishiguro’s work or how this might speak to real-life questions surrounding ageing. Few readers of Never Let Me Go realise that in writing it Ishiguro’s guiding question was ‘how can I get young people to go through the experience of old people’? The arguments here seek to restore such authorly intentions to prominence. Ishiguro is more interested in socio-cultural meanings of ageing than biologically impoverished memories: this article examines the shifting relationships Ishiguro presents between memory and age as regards what happens to the ways in which memories are valued, and how people might be valuable (or not) for their memories. Interdisciplinary with age studies and social gerontology, this article demonstrates how Ishiguro both contributes to, and contends with, socially constructed concepts of ageing. In refocusing Ishiguro criticism onto reminiscence rather than nostalgia, this article aims to put ageing firmly on the agenda of future research.

Author(s): ALINA DWORAK / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Demographic aging of the population, expressed by the increase in the society percentage of elderly people is a social process, which is in the interest of researchers in many fields both medicine, public health, psychology, sociology or social policy. Reason of the increase in the society percent of older people is the extending the duration of human life with a simulta neous decrease in the number of births. Demographic aging of the Polish population, proceed in a similar manner to most European societies. Senile changes are manifested with varying in¬tensity in different periods of human life, causing a progressive reduction of self-reliance, often helplessness. The process of population aging is a problem all over the world, and lengthening the duration of life is not always associated with its quality. Assessing the quality of life of older people we should take into account aspects related to the health and well-being, as well as exponents of social functioning. Reaching old age in good health requires the targeting of social policy not only to extend life, but also to improve its quality. It is also a task for the health promotion of older people, which is the process towards both to change the style of life of older people, as well as changes in the organization of health care and social assistance for the elderly, and to improve the quality of life in the “joy of life”.

Author(s): Branislava Knežić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2006

The following text is an attempt to turn the attention of profession and science to those who impelled by infirmity and broken will for life, choose the only option they are left – voluntary but cruel desertion from life. It's about depressed, lonely, disappointed, desperate, helpless and often sick old people, who are frightened by present and disquieted by future, so when they make their life balans the only solution they find is to terminate their existence. Their motives and reasons are numerous, and for some of them we can only surmise, but the result indicates that fear from life overcomes fear from death. Who, When, How, Where and always the most important and the most difficult – Why a man quit his life, are the questions that occupy not only science (philosophy, psychiatry, psychology, sociology, law, andragogy, antropology, suicidology...) but also religion, literature and art. Regardless of variety of literature and answers on suicide the question and dilemma that occupy the profession and science still remain: Why a man judge on himself? For those unsatisfied by explanations the weak comfort is that the secret (cause)goes to grave. This is the reason for greater methodological grounding of researches of this complex phenomenon.

Author(s): Petya Petrova-Angelova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2015

The following article focuses on the issue of the nuclear family and the way in which it is accepted by the extended family. Basing myself on observations and information gathered among the occupants of a nursing home, I suggest that the present situation brings forth the nuclear family consisting of a mother, a father and a child/children, but also including the grandparents who seek their place, part and status. Thus I investigate the transformation of the model according to which the children have always been obliged to look after their elderly parents according to the written or unwritten rules. I consider my interlocutors as members of a community very similar to the family based environment. In addition, I presume that this is partially connected with the dissent between the expectations of one of the generations and the possibilities of the other one. Further I analyze the idea of taking care within the family as well as the model of parent–child relations within the institution, stating that the latter is based on emotions like shame, fear and guilt.

Author(s): Yoan Hristov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2015

The integration of immigrants in the Bulgarian society rises as a key issue for the European development of Bulgaria. To achieve the necessary results, integration policies need serious optimization. It is necessary to create mechanisms for effective implementation of the measures to deal with the challenges of the time related to migration pressure on the country. The findings of the study of policies for employment, educational and cultural integration of immigrants in the Bulgarian society can serve to correct some measures applied and implemented practices and replacing them with more adequate and appropriate actions. Results could contribute to the effectiveness of ongoing policies, to streamline the process of their realization and to optimize the impact of integration activities and measures. Successful integration requires policy interventions, which are consistent with the government priorities, but also with international commitments. Of particular importance is the Bulgarian statesmen engaged in the formulation and implementation of integration policies to show political will to implement them in practice and making them reality.

Author(s): Suzana Bornarova / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 1/2008

The global population aging highlights the problem of social exclusion of older people from all spheres of societal life, including from the social protection system. In R. Macedonia, also undergoing the process of demographic population aging, legislation in itself does not exclude older people from the social protection rights on any basis: nationality, gender, age, rural or urban belonging. However, the practice evidences situations of limited or impeded access to the social protection rights. The overriding obstacles are: complex administrative procedures and unsettled family relations (parents-children relations) that are quite often requirements for enjoyment of a specific social protection right. The lack and the underdevelopment of the forms of social protection anticipated by Law (such as home care and assistance, day care, foster care) results into older people having often only normative, but not concurrently a real access and possibilities to use those services. This situation imposes the need to overcome and eliminate the existing barriers in the practical implementation of the legislative regulations; to promote new forms of protection (non-institutional in the first place); as well as to develop and diversify the pension system in terms of introducing public and private pension schemes to cover diverse social services expenses that may occur in old age.

Author(s): Vesna Anđelković,Ivana Zubić / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 11/2/2015

The effort is directed towards displaying different factors of maturity in maturity. The research had a purpose to investigate the differences in investigating the resilience of the respondents from wounds, middle and poor maturity in relation to sex, the level of education, spouse and work status. The survey was conducted on samples of 1612 inhabitants of Serbia from 37 towns and villages, of two poles, aged 27-70 years and at all educational levels. A PORPOS battery is used, a dedicated instrument of 389 items and dusts, which, in addition to the second, contains a short scale for estimation of resiliency, as well as a list of general data. The results show that respondents with a deep maturity in relation to those of early and medium maturity are less resilient in terms of all examined factors at a statistically significant level. Specifically, women in the mid-mature period, who will be compared with the other two subgroups of their females, have the greatest resilience, and the females in their mature maturity, compared with the other subgroups of men, have the smallest. Likewise, respondents in a deep maturity are less resilient than the other two subgroups in relation to all levels of education, except for the basic one when they are not married and caregivers. In addition, the respondents in early maturity with the highest level of education are less resilient than those who are in middle maturity. The results obtained generally suggest that the level of resistance changes in the course of the age and that sociodemographic factors should be included in its comprehension.

Author(s): Ilina Jakimovska,Ana Ashtalkovska Gajtanoska / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 16/2017
