Политическая активность российской молодежи как индикатор ценностных ориентаций молодого поколения (на материалах регионального исследования)

Политическая активность российской молодежи как индикатор ценностных ориентаций молодого поколения (на материалах регионального исследования)

Author(s): Elena Matveeva,Alexander Mitin,Daria Trofimova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 26/2021

In this article, the authors pay attention to the issue of value preferences of Russian youths on the example of one of the regions of the Russian Federation – the Kemerovo region – Kuzbass. The problems surrounding the political activity of young people are considered through the examination of current legislation on the youth, socialisation, and the direct-value orientations and preferences of young people. The main legal acts regulating youth policy in the Russian Federation are marked. As an empirical basis, a number of methodological approaches were used: the system approach (D. Easton, G. Almond), the normative-value approach (J. Rawls), as well as utilising expert interviews, questionnaires, and surveys. This article demonstrates the inconsistency of the value beliefs of modern youths, which is caused by the Russian model of democratic development.

ANALYZING THE EFFECTS OF DEMOGRAPHIC AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS ON EFFICACY OF DIGITALIZATION IN INDIA’S HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Author(s): Bharat Kumar Meher,Iqbal Thonse Hawaldar,Ramona Birau,Santosh KUMAR,Sumit Singha,Ninulescu Petre Valeriu,Abhishek Kumar Gupta,Sheila Sison / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2023

The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of the digitalization in higher education of Bihar during the lockdowns of colleges and universities due to covid-19 pandemic and to find whether gender, course opted, stream of study, medium of study, residential area, family income level, online class attended, actual time spent on using internet for education, and ownership of gadgets used in online classes affect the effectiveness of digitalization in higher education in Bihar. The data used in this study are primary in nature and collected by using the questionnaire method from 429 students of thirteen different state universities and one open university. As many predictors are categorical in nature multinomial logistic regression has been used to assess the impact of various demographic and socio-economic factors on efficacy of digitalization in higher education in Bihar. It has been found that the variables like monthly income of the family, time actually spent by the students for education by using internet per day, stream of the study, medium of the study, residential area and gender are significant factors that affect the digitalization in higher education in Bihar during the pandemic. The study could contribute in two ways. First, the results of efficacy of digitalization in higher education in Bihar of a lowest education index ranking state will depict an authentic picture of effectiveness of digitalization in higher education in Bihar in backward states and thereby add up to the existing literature and second, the significant factors of the model could assist the policy makers in taking corrective measures while taking any decision to digitalize the education in such kind of states in India.

The Baloch Insurgency in Pakistan and the Chinese Connection

The Baloch Insurgency in Pakistan and the Chinese Connection

Author(s): Shakoor Ahmad Wani / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This article examines the interplay between big ticket investment projects financed by the Chinese capital and ethno-nationalism in the province of Balochistan. It argues that the growing Chinese presence in Balochistan has provided a new impetus to an already simmering Baloch nationalist resistance. Balochistan has profuse natural resource wealth, yet its riches have not benefited its people. The Baloch are one of the most deprived communities in Pakistan. Successive central governments have exploited the province's resources in the name of development to the detriment of its inhabitants. The advent of CPEC (China–Pakistan Economic Corridor) has exacerbated Baloch grievances. They believe that mega-development projects like Gwadar port would impinge adversely on local demography by attracting a huge influx of economic migrants and render the Baloch minority in their own land. The insurgent groups view China as a 'partner in crime' and have responded by selectively targeting Chinese assets and personnel. The article analyses the nature of resistance to Chinese presence and the changing modus of insurgent groups. It argues that Islamabad's attempts to deter the attacks by intensifying the militarisation of the province are counterproductive as they reinforce Baloch opposition to CPEC.

Balúčské povstání v Pákistánu a souvislost s Čínou

Balúčské povstání v Pákistánu a souvislost s Čínou

Author(s): Shakoor Ahmad Wani / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2021

The Romanian community in Spain. Short presentation

The Romanian community in Spain. Short presentation

Author(s): Alin Bulumac / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2022

The Romanian community in Spain represents the largest community in Spain (18,61%), surpassing the community of Moroccans, a demographic reality that resulted from the large migration movements registered after 1990. This article purpose is to describe in a synthetic manner, the issues of those Romanians who chose to emigrate to Spain, as part of Romania's economic diaspora. Starting from the law of sociological parallelism, the importance of the chosen theme is given by the fact that the phenomenon of migration indirectly represents an indicator of an internal imbalance of the Romanian nation, and directly, the magnitude and constancy of the phenomenon show that the mirage of the transition to democracy preserved the degraded status of the elites as well as the degrading status of the Romanian people. We will try to describe the current status of the Romanian nation succinctly using two key concepts: vitality (Nicolae Iorga) and nation (Dimitrie Gusti), both applied on the background of the law of sociological parallelism (Dimitrie Gusti).

Snowflake Generation – between clarity and spiritual paralysis

Snowflake Generation – between clarity and spiritual paralysis

Author(s): Samira Cîrlig,Alin Bulumc,Narcis Rupe / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2022

This material discusses the problem of the young generation, which in the international literature is called the “snowflake generation”. Its main characteristic is its high degree of isolation. This is important because it is linked by experts to several health problems. In other words, emotional instability is also reflected in mental inflexibility. Therefore, another trait of this generation is intellectual paralysis. So, the clarity of mind becomes one of the biggest challenges for them. These are the issues that this material briefly addresses.

Snowflake Generation and problems caused by pandemic restrictions. An analysis starting from Constantin Noica and Max Weber

Snowflake Generation and problems caused by pandemic restrictions. An analysis starting from Constantin Noica and Max Weber

Author(s): Samira Cîrlig,Narcis Rupe,Alin Bulumac / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2022

This paper aims to address, in the form of brief considerations, one aspect of the snowflake generation and some of the student issues arising from the pandemic restrictions imposed between 2020 and 2022. These aspects of social reality are approached from a philosophical (the way in which a concept is defined, Constantin Noica) and from a sociological (the comprehensive method of cognition These authors prove that we can know concepts, or social facts, if we compare them with ''something else'': with an opposite (Noica), or with an ideal-typical construction (Weber). Thus, we see that the snowflake generation “should” (ideal-typical) be characterized predominantly by an effervescent attitude to the problems of life, but they are not. Restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic have further decreased the vitality of young people in the snowflake generation, young people with the highest rates of depression and anxiety between 2020 and 2022. In this context, online learning, being a form of interaction between young people and their peers and teachers, did not reduce depression and anxiety in these young people during the COVID-19 pandemic, although it ‘should’ (ideally-typically) have reduced them.

INFLUENCE OF THE STANDARD OF LIVING ON THE BIRTH RATE IN BULGARIA

Author(s): Nikolay Stoenchev / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The article presents the results of a statistical analysis of the dependence of the birth rate in Bulgaria on the standard of living in an up-to-date aspect. Fertility was presented using the crude birth rate and the total fertility rate. In order to assess the standard of living, a complex set of criteria for administrative provinces was calculated, taking into account the state of 12 specially selected indicators at the same time. The information used was: the information officially published by the National Statistical Institute, Eurostat and data from the publication “Regional Profiles – Development Indicators” by the Institute for Market Economy. The algorithm of the used methodology was detailed, including the user options and arguments for choice. An international comparison was also made involving the EU Member States. The lack of a significant relationship between the birth rate and the standard of living according to complex criteria in Bulgaria and a moderate negative relationship between the total fertility rate and the standard of living in our country was revealed. When the analysis is based only on the GDP per capita as criteria for the achieved standard of living, the relationship between financial well-being and the birth rate turns out to be moderately positive, both for Bulgaria and for the entire set of EU Member States (EU 27). Recommendations were made for selective financial stimulation of the population in reproductive age and special attention to support married couples with reproductive problems and vulnerable social communities.

VOLUNTARY CHILDLESSNESS IS INCREASINGLY CULTURALLY ACCEPTABLE IN DEVELOPED EUROPE

Author(s): Stoyanka Cherkezova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The study analyses societal norms about voluntary childlessness in 29 European countries in the context of 1) achieved human development measured by its three main components: health, income and education and 2) some cultural norms towards inequalities and exclusion and the degree of individualism and collectivism in societies. The comparative analysis uses microdata from two waves of the European Social Survey, the third from 2006 and the ninth from 2018/2019, as well as aggregated data from Eurostat. The main statistical methods are descriptive and principal components analyses. Countries were classified according to their degree of modernisation. We registered unidirectionality across countries in the change of cultural norms relative to voluntary childlessness over time. We found convergences in the classification of countries according to attitudes towards voluntary childlessness and according to human development achieved and cultural differences, with human development leading the way. The study interprets the results in the context of traditional, modern and postmodern. The resultsof the study raise more fundamental theoretical questions related to the direction of change in cultural norms, such as what we can expect to happen in Central and Eastern European countries.

STUDY ON THE CHANGES IN THE AGE DEPENDENCY RATIO AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE ECONOMY

Author(s): Krassimira Slaveva / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Assessing the impact of the ongoing demographic processes on Bulgaria’s economy and social system requires a complex approach, since the in-depth analysis of the situation and the causes that lead to such demographic processes are a reliable basis on which to develop a concept for an active demographic policy. The purpose of this article is to reveal and measure the changes in the age structure of the population, to model the trends in the change of the age dependency ratio, and to evaluate the economic and social effects of population ageing, by using statistical methods of analysis. Statistical methods are used in the study to analyse dynamic series, to analyse structural changes and differences and to reveal relationships and dependencies. The results of evaluating the intensity of the changes in the age structure provide grounds for the conclusion that the changes in the age structure based on the three age groups – 0–14, 15–64 and 65+ compared to the base structure, are manifested more slowly in comparison with the changes in the structure of the population on the basis of consecutive cohorts formed by five-year age intervals. When compared with the structure of the previous year, the value of the ratios would turn out to be lower and would indicate weaker structural changes, since the age structure in the considered age intervals does not imply sharp changes within a year-long period. The developed trend models would make it possible to develop short-term forecasts of the expected values of the age dependency ratios by years with the corresponding confidence intervals of the forecast, evaluation of potential changes in the case of changes in the factors affecting the main demographic processes. The significant changes in the age structure of the population of Bulgaria and the deepening of the population ageing processes bring to the fore some important issues related to economic development, stability of the national economy, stability of the pension system and fiscal stability, due to the increased pension-related expenditures, expenditures on health care, social assistance, etc.

POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON LABOUR FORCE REPRODUCTION IN BULGARIA

Author(s): Kremena Borissova-Marinova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The present study represents an attempt to identify basic effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the long-term trends observed in the labour force reproduction in Bulgaria. The period of time of the study selected (2006-2021) starts with the year before the Bulgaria’s accession into the EU. To receive a more objective assessment of the changes studied, an international comparison of the trends was made with four European countries: Greece, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Sweden. Statistical information published by the National Statistical Institute and Eurostat (vital statistics and annual data of Labour Force Survey) over the period analysed was used in the study. The study includes two aspects of analysis. The first aspect covers the examination of longterm trends of evolution of basic demographic parameters in the selected countries (labour force dimension and speed of the demographic ageing). The second aspect is focussed on the trends of evolution of economic activity levels by three demographic and social attributes (age, sex and level of education). The results obtained provide a basis to consider the negative changes in the longterm trends observed during the period 2020–2021 as an indication for the presence of COVID-19 pandemic’s different sized effects on the labour supply.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INTRAPRENEURSHIP – CAPACITY AND MINDSET OF THE BUSINESS AND EMPLOYED PERSONS

Author(s): Todor Todorov / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This paper aims to discuss the role of intrapreneurship for supporting sustainable development in organisations and achieving environmental, social and business sustainability. The results of a survey conducted in Bulgaria among employees and employers are presented and an analysis of the effect their intrapreneurial skills and attitudes have on the existing practices, targeted towards achieving sustainable development in organisations, was made. The results of the study confirm the thesis defended in the paper, related to the understanding that building capacity within existing organisations to identify innovative ideas and further develop them in intrapreneurial endeavours for the modification of products, services and organisational processes has a significant potential for positive impact on sustainability.

SOCIAL CAPITAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS FROM LARGE ETHNIC GROUPS –BULGARIANS AND ROMA

Author(s): Enitsa Pchelarova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

A stable social group is being formed in the Bulgarian society, and this group has no chances to self-fulfil on the labour market due to illiteracy or lack of education and/or qualifications. At the same time, changes in the labour market impose higher requirements on labour force’s educational and qualification levels. Thirdly, the social stratification of society results in linking access to education with the socio-economic status of families. The question arises whether it is possible for the scarcity of economic and cultural capital to be influenced by the social capital’s resources for the purposes of education? Under what circumstances social capital could increase or decrease the likelihood of educational achievements of students in the Bulgarian education system? This work examines the problem of the relationship between social capital and educational achievements through the lens of theories of James Coleman, Pierre Bourdieu, Alejandro Portes and Nan Lin and Raymond Boudon’s theory of primary and secondary effects of social origins, as further developed by Robert Erickson, Jan Jonsson, John Goldthorpe and Hartmut Esser.

The miner’s profile in the transition to a post- industrial society – socio-economic and affective implications of a particular type of shrinkage.

Author(s): Ioana Măgureanu / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2023

Nowadays, a lot of attention is directed towards the development of medium and large cities in Romania, as they are being considered major elements of potential in terms of social, economic and natural capital. They represent the key pillars able to ensure the much- coveted territorial cohesion, so hard to achieve in a country where many cities are still facing socio-economic decline. In this context, however, many Romanian cities are left behind - the small cities, with a few tens of thousands of inhabitants, whose label is very often that of shrinking cities. These ghost towns define a considerable part of the Romanian urbanized space and are (mostly) characterized by high migration rates, high unemployment, poor offer in terms of economic activities and leisure opportunities - and implicitly hopelessness, pessimism and a lack of urban vitality...in a nutshell, a negative dynamic in most respects. A sound example in this regard is represented by the former coal mining cities in Jiu Valley, whose activity decreased considerably after the fall of the communist regime (4 out of the 15 mines are still functional1) and whose inhabitants suddenly passed in the 90s from the status of „heroes of labor” (Udisteanu et al, 2019) to that of „mass manipulators” and aggressors representing the political will of the times (associated with the three mining raids in 1990, 1991 and 1999). Furthermore, in the post-industrial era, the miner seems to have lost completely his practical and symbolic significance in the society, being suspended somewhere between the memory of the glorious and secure past and the uncertain future. The current article presents the socio-economic and affective implications that the sudden and brutal end of the mining activity brought in the Jiu Valley, focusing mainly on the deep, inalienable connections created between the workers and the mines, but also between miners themselves, as well as on the spatial and social factors that contributed tothe occurrence of these bounds.

Population Policies of India

Author(s): Bekir Yüksel HOŞ / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2023

It is thought that there is 7.9 billion people on earth as of 2022. The two main countries holding this population stock are China, closely followed by India, which is expected to surpass China in the near future. In India, which is the subject of this study, five different cities were visited in 2013 and so the discrepancies between the statistical data and the situations shown by the land itself were analyzed on-site. In addition, members of the society from very different religions were interviewed, the situation of people from different castes, who constitute the dominant religious group, the Hindu faith, was analyzed on the spot, and an idea was obtained about the participation in the state and local administrations in terms of their population. The case of India has not been sufficiently studied in the literature to include examples of its population policy, management of a large population, control of the population, societies, and democracies not being dominated by a group of particular people of a region. In this study, these will be revealed and the effects ofpopulation policies on the development and administration of the country will be examined.

The 2022 population census in Serbia: sociopolitical context and methodological innovations

The 2022 population census in Serbia: sociopolitical context and methodological innovations

Author(s): Petar D. Vasić / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

Since the first modern census was conducted in Serbia in 1866, 20 censuses have been conducted to date. However, controversy regarding the field research, structure of questions and use of data has never been stronger. The sociopolitical context, in other European countries alike, that preceded the 2022 census was marked by low-key invitations from government representatives to participate in the Census, an inconspicuous campaign by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, conspiracy theories on disseminated social networks and calls for a boycott. On the other hand, despite methodological improvements, the census was marked by implementation problems, untrained enumerators, lack of manpower in the field, and the imputation from administrative sources of persons who did not participate in the Census. It seems that this time some of major causes of field research problems and, once again, methodological incompatibilities with previous censuses, were the inadequate communication with the public and insufficient training levels of enumerators.

Age structure of the population of Serbia – what changes were recorded in the censuses in 2002, 2011 and 2022?

Author(s): Jelena N. Stojilković Gnjatović / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

The aim of the paper is to depict the broader picture of the level of age structure transformation in Serbia, based on the data of the last three censuses (2002, 2011 and 2022). The historical conditioning of the age (pre)composition is explored through the basic determinants of the age structure. In order to monitor the advanced process of demographic ageing, age structure indicators have been calculated, and temporal and spatial comparisons were made. In a comparative manner, the population of Serbia is also put into relation to other European countries, using the methodology of demographic age stages. A more detailed analysis at the municipality level showed that 88.7% of the municipalities were in the demographic deepest old age. Thus, the classification was extended by adding demographic extremely deep old age that is characteristic of 39.2% municipalities in Serbia.

Changes in the national structure of Serbia’s population at the beginning of the 21st century

Author(s): Snežana S. Stojšin / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the national structure of Serbia’s population according to the 2022 Census and the changes occurring since the beginning of the 21st century.(Census, 2002) to date (Census, 2022). The research starts from the assumption that there have not been substantial changes in the national structure of Serbia’s population in comparison to two previous censuses (2002 and 2011), but that certain changes can be seen at the municipal level. During the observed period, the number of Serbia’s inhabitants dropped by 850,998. The data analysis shows that the reduction in the number of inhabitants was seen in almost all ethnic groups during the observed period. There was an increase in the number of members of Bosniak, Roma, Albanian and Russian nationalities. All ethnic groups are older in comparison to the previous censuses.

The issue of depopulation in selected Southeast European countries through an analytical prism of the human safety concept

Author(s): Ivica Lj. Đorđević,Ozren Đ. Džigurski,Milenko U. Dželetović / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

Of the ten selected countries in Southeast Europe, seven recorded a demographic deficit during the period 2006-2019. The timeframe of this research is conditional upon the availability of data and the fact that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, data relative to the post-2019 period are not relevant. Using the human security concept as an analytical framework, with the help of statistical analysis based on selected indicators, we have reached the result that the health situation to a highest degree contributed to Slovenia, Montenegro and North Macedonia maintaining approximately the same number of inhabitants, while Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Croatia, and Romania recorded a demographic deficit. Research shows that the long-term development strategies of countries should be based on the quality of life of citizens in order to ensure their sustainability and survival.
