Knowledge and Attitude Towards Dietary Risk Factors and Prevalence of Obesity Among Newly Admitted Undergraduates of Osun State University, Nigeria

Knowledge and Attitude Towards Dietary Risk Factors and Prevalence of Obesity Among Newly Admitted Undergraduates of Osun State University, Nigeria

Author(s): Akindele Folasade Diana,Ojo Mary Abidemi,Adegoke Isaac Eniola,Fadiora Olamide Dorcas,Akinnuoye Adesola Toyin,Dike Chioma Sandra / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2023

The epidemic of overweight and obesity poses a global challenge to chronic disease prevention, driven by increased consumption of energy-dense, fatty foods and a rise in physical inactivity due to sedentary lifestyles. Westernisation, urbanisation, and eroding traditional values contribute to this issue, leading to childhood obesity persisting into adulthood and triggering various diseases. Middle and low-income countries face a double disease burden, grappling with infectious and non-communicable diseases due to escalating obesity rates. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes towards dietary risk factors and the prevalence of obesity among newly admitted undergraduates at Osun State University, Nigeria. The findings revealed a relatively low prevalence of obesity (4.7%) among the studied population, with encouraging knowledge about obesity among the students. Socio-demographic factors such as family standard of living and parents' were found to influence obesity among undergraduates. However, limited community exercise facilities, poverty, and poor nutritional education contribute to poor dietary habits. Further efforts are needed to address obesity in this population and its potential impact on health and the economy. Stakeholders should support childhood obesity prevention interventions, including marketing and advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods and beverages adolescents consume. The research employed a descriptive cross-sectional study design, sampling 320 participants from three university campuses through a multistage sampling method. Data collection was facilitated through a semi-structured questionnaire administered to themselves. The data was analysed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate approaches. The 320 respondents were 47.8% male and 52.2% female; a more significant percentage were 15-19 years old. 8 out of 10 respondents had good knowledge, and the attitude of the respondents was significantly associated with their age and religion, such that the respondents between 15-19 years of age and the Muslims were more likely to have good knowledge than their counterparts. Family standard of living (father and mother occupational status) was the socio-demographic factor influencing obesity among Osun State University undergraduate students. Adequate intervention is required to enable adolescents and their parents/guardians to understand the health-related problems they are prone to by being obese. Concerned stakeholders should support childhood obesity prevention interventions such as marketing and advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods and fizzy drinks adolescents consume.

Scatter plot analysis of malleable variables in the post death era of George Floyd

Scatter plot analysis of malleable variables in the post death era of George Floyd

Author(s): Jay M. Finkelman / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

This commentary is for the International Journal for Social Policy and Education (IJSPE). Our purpose here is: 1. To propose which variables are most amenable to change. 2. To identify which variable have been most successful in producing positive change. 3. To suggest ways to start implementing these changes. Our goal is to alter the systemic racism of our social institutions and the prejudice in the hearts and minds of individuals driven by hate of others unlike them.

Alexithymia among long-term drug users: a pilot study in Oporto

Alexithymia among long-term drug users: a pilot study in Oporto

Author(s): Teresa Souto,Hélder Alves,Ana Rita Conde,Luísa Pinto,Óscar Ribeiro / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2019

Increasing scientific evidence supports an association between alexithymia and psychoactive substance use. This study explores alexithymia´s expression in sample of long-term drug users, undergoing outpatient treatment in public health units in Oporto, Portugal, as well as its´ association with social demographic risk factors. Data was collected from a sample of 90 adults, participants, mainly men (n=90; 87%), considered to be old consumers (81% with a age>40 years), with a mean age of 46.1 years (SD=8.3; range=21–64).Two instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). More than 51.1% of the individuals were alexithymic, indicating a high prevalence of deficits in emotional awareness. The treatment period varied from 0 to 15 years, included a medication in 55% of cases, mostly methadone (83%). This profile illustrates the gradual aging of the long-term users of illicit drugs and alcohol with a clear diagnosis of an emotional disorder. Therefore, clinicians who develop treatment strategies may want to take into account the likelihood that many of their patients may be alexithymic; in being so, they should integrate specific psychotherapeutic techniques that promote both the identification and the differentiation in emotionally dysfunctional patients.

Depopulation as a Long-term Policy Problem: From Dilemmas to Strategies

Depopulation as a Long-term Policy Problem: From Dilemmas to Strategies

Author(s): Magdalena Jelonek,Stanisław Mazur / Language(s): Polish Issue: 51/2024

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific objective of this article is to analyse strategies for urban decision-makers to address the dilemmas of depopulation. The theoretical framework for the article is the typology of long-term policy problem-solving dilemmas by Pot et al. (2022).THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The authors answer the question of how public administration officials are responding to the challenge of regional depopulation, what dilemmas they face in the process, and whether patterns can be detected in their preferred solutions. To answer these questions, the authors rely on qualitative research findings ‒ in-depth interviews (IDI) performed with mayors of Polish cities liable to depopulation and their direct subordinates.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: How policymakers navigate specific long-term challenges is contingent upon, inter alia, their resolution of the ensuing pivotal dilemmas.RESEARCH RESULTS: The strategies followed by municipalities are strongly affected by contextual factors inclusive of the monetary scenario, the character of the metropolis and its hyperlinks with other city centres, the connection with the government, or even the management style represented by means of the mayor. An aggregate of 3 styles seems to predominate, i.e. making an investment in targets, the responsive, and the reactive ones.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Two challenges, which we call meta-dilemmas, are particularly relevant for local government in Poland: the meta-dilemma of defining the functions of local government and the dilemma of agency. Resolving them determines the decision of policy when dealing with strategic dilemmas.

Author(s): Aleksandra Karśnicka,Magdalena Rutkowska,Katarzyna Sadowy / Language(s): Polish Issue: 194/2023

The article analyzes the issue of accessibility of public utility facilities and public spaces from the perspective of an ageing society. Its purpose is the identification of strengths and barriers in the selected area of the city of Warsaw and the Mokotów district in the context of senior policy, as well as support for activity and the high quality of life for older individuals. The analysis of Mokotów was conducted considering the accessibility of selected centres and services of public utility facilities (inter alia cultural ones, libraries, green areas, public transport, public toilets). The analysis was carried out on the basis of statistical data from the years 2020–2021, map data from city services (as of 2023), a survey conducted in 2023, as well as participant observation and information obtained from social service institutions (2019–2023). It was proved that the analyzed area is well-equipped with social services catering to the needs of older adults and has accessible and attractive green areas. The identified barriers are of physical nature (insufficient quality of public spaces, hindering independent movement) as well as present some informational challenges.

ÇORUM TARİHÎ COĞRAFYASINA KATKI: KARAHİSAR-I DEMİRLİ NAHİYESİ’NDE NÜFUS VE YERLEŞİM

Author(s): Hakan Yazar,Mehmet Ali Bozkuş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 82/2024

Karahisar-ı Demirli, which was a district attached to the Çorum Sanjak in the administrative division of the Ottoman Empire, is an area of settlement that has not survived to the present day. The center of the district is currently located near Kalehisar, one of the central villages of Çorum, and the ruins of buildings belonging to this settlement can still be observed in the vicinity of Kalehisar and Mahmudiye Villages. The administrative area covered by the Karahisarı Demirli District was not limited to the aforementioned two villages but encompassed dozens of villages and hamlets. While some of these villages and hamlets disappeared over time, others have persisted until today. These villages, which continue to exist under the jurisdiction of Çorum, Alaca, Sungurlu, Boğazkale, and Uğurludağ districts, were part of the Karahisar-ı Demirli during the Ottoman period. Within the scope of the study to be conducted, first of all, the importance of Karahisar-ı Demirli, a district that has not survived to the present day, during the Seljuk and principalities period will be considered within the framework of the medieval resources. In addition, the origin of the name of the district will be explained. Then, the administrative area covered by Karahisar-ı Demirli will be elucidated based on a kind of population and land census called “tahrir” registers, which the Ottomans periodically kept to calculate and record tax revenues. In this context, three detailed tahrir registers that have survived to the present day related to the relevant district will be examined. After revealing the historical geography of the Karahisar-ı Demirli District based on the detailed registers kept during the early reigns of Mehmed the Conqueror, Süleyman the Magnificent, and Murad III, the population and settlement characteristics in the region between 1455 and 1576 will be discussed. In this context, comprehensive explanations will be provided regarding the development of villages and hamlets in Karahisar-ı Demirli over the approximately 120-year period under study, and the approximate population in the district’s centre and rural settlements will be calculated. Additionally, based on the records in the tahrir registers, the tribes, communities, and clans settled in the district will be discussed. Finally, the population size and population movements in the Karahisar-ı Demirli District will be compared with the central district of the Çorum Sanjak during the same period. Thus, the social and economic situation of Karahisar-ı Demirli during the period under consideration will be examined.

Labour Force and Active Ageing in the Context of Current Demographic Changes

Author(s): Mihaela-Georgiana Oprea,Mihaela-Irma Vlădescu,Ana-Maria Vasile,Predrag M. Vuković / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Population ageing is a global phenomenon, affecting most European countries, including Romania. This is due among other things to high migration, rising life expectancy and a steadily declining birth rate. The consequences of this demographic phenomenon are particularly important because the social and economic effects are long-term. Some of the research in this area has focused on studying the population aged 65 to 74 (young seniors) who may represent a labour resource at a time when many countries are facing an acute shortage of human resources. This study aims to analyse the demographic situation in the EU and Romania through a comparative analysis of the number of seniors in both EU countries and Romania. In more developed countries such as Italy, France, Germany and Finland, the elderly population exceeds 20% of the total population, confirming concerns about demographic ageing. By residence environment, in Romania we have identified a quite obvious delimitation by fields of activity. While in rural areas, agriculture is the predominant activity, the urban population often opts for fields requiring higher education such as education and health. As a result, although challenging, the inclusion of older people in the labour market can reduce labour shortages, increase contributions to the state budget and at the same time contribute to greater social cohesion

Covid-19 Sürecinde Yaşam Doyumu, Algılanan Stres, Umutsuzluk, Psikolojik Sağlamlığın İncelenmesi

Author(s): Aida Şahmurova / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 22/2024

In our study, it is seen that there are significant relationships between Beck hopelessness scale, burnout scale, marital life scale and quality of life scale and sub-dimension scores. Findings related to mediator analysis showed that hopelessness had a significant partial mediator role in the effect of burnout on marital life and quality of life. Demographic characteristics, gender, age, education, employment status, marital status, number of children, income status, fear of COVID-19, pregnancy processes and child-related conditions were examined. Marital life scale scores were higher in males than females. It is seen that university graduates have higher quality of life scale environmental sub-dimension scores than primary school graduates. While the burnout and hopelessness scale scores of those with higher income status were lower than those with lower income, marital life scale, quality of life scale environmental and psychological health sub-dimension scores were found to be higher. While married people had higher quality of life scale and marital life scale scores than singles, hopelessness scores were found to be lower. While it was observed that the marital life and quality of life scores of the parents whose child's nutrition process was affected during the COVID-19 process were lower, their hopelessness levels were higher.

POVEZANOST SOCIODEMOGRAFSKIH VARIJABLI SA EMOCIONALNOM KOMPETETNOŠĆU NASTAVNIKA I KVALITETOM RAZREDNOG OZRAČJA

Author(s): Tarik Hasanić,Lejla Muratović,Amer Ćaro / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 4/2024

The paper presents the results of a research aimed at examining the relationship between socio-demographic variables (gender, length of service and employment in primary or secondary school), the emotional competence of teachers and the quality of the classroom climate. This relationship was analyzed based on the teachers’ self-assessment of their own emotional competencies and the quality of the classroom climate they create. The research was conducted on a sample of 302 teachers employed in primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Data collection was carried out online using the Emotional Competence Questionnaire (UEK-45), the Classroom Climate Questionnaire, and the Socio-demographic Questionnaire. The research found that the socio-demographic variable of teachers' length of service predicts, in a statistically significant manner, all dimensions of the emotional competence of teachers. The socio-demographic variable of gender has proven to be a statistically significant predictor of the ability to understand and perceive emotions in such a way that teachers achieve higher values on this subscale of emotional competence. Also, multiple regression analysis found that gender is a statistically significant predictor of creating a classroom climate. The conducted research indicates the importance of the emotional competence of teachers for the creation of a positive classroom climate.

PROUČAVANJE DEMOGRAFSKE SKICE I TOPONIMIJSKO-ANTROPONIMIJSKIH OSOBITOSTI OSMANSKOG POPISA STANOVNIŠTVA KADILUKA ZENICA 1850. GODINE

Author(s): Adnan Kadrić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 4/2024

The article points to the basic data on the population of Zenica based on the Ottoman census of the Zenica Qāżā from 1266/1850 year with reference to the collective checklists for the payment of fees/compensation for not serving military service (bedel-i ʻaskeriyye). First of all, attention is drawn to the census units that were located in the most important urban and rural settlements in Zenica and its surroundings. The detailed 1850 census is presented, including the approximate number of homes in each enumerated place and the number of males counted. Separate statistics for populated units inhabited by certain religious groups were first provided, and in a subsequent analysis, a summary overview of the data was provided, since the Muslim and non-Muslim populations were recorded in separate census books. A special attempt was made to showcase the people of Zenica, focusing only on the most well-known quarters at the time. The significance of the Ottoman population census from 1850 for demographic research as well as the study of Zenica toponymy and anthroponymy is highlighted in the second section of the paper.

Assessment of Recreation Areas in Terms of Risk Groups in the Society

Assessment of Recreation Areas in Terms of Risk Groups in the Society

Author(s): Gül Kadan / Language(s): English Issue: 33/2024

It is seen that the physical health of aged individuals, who constitute one of the very special and important groups in society, may have deteriorated, especially in the last moments of their lives. Individuals who have to leave the house less often may also be in a psychologically bad situation in parallel with this restriction. In this sense, the need for areas where especially older individuals can spend more quality time is quite high. In this context, the research aimed to evaluate recreation areas for older individuals, especially in a region such as Erzurum, where winter conditions are quite harsh. In the research conducted using the interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods, the data were collected with the general information form and interview form prepared by the researchers. The research was conducted between January 2023, and May 2023. As a result of the research, findings were found that older individuals generally go out for health reasons, they find the streets unsafe, and recreation areas are not suitable and need to be improved. According to the results obtained in the research, it can be recommended that recreation areas be developed for both summer and winter conditions and that necessary arrangements be made to enable older individuals to spend quality time in these areas.

Duyu Bütünleme Sistemleri ile Eğitim İlişkisinde Fizyolojik Fonksiyonların İncelenmesi

Author(s): Firdevs Ulutaş Yeğ,Seval Gök / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 34/2024

The aim of this study is to investigate the physiological functions in the relationship between sensory integration systems and education. The sensory integration system states that the sensory integration process is necessary for the sensory-motor development of an individual because the individual's interaction with those around him is effective at the developmental stages of the brain, which is open to innovation. In recent studies, it has been shown that sensory integration systems are effective for individuals who need both normal and special education. It is stated that it is important to focus on providing educational interventions for parents and teachers through training and coaching methods. When we look at the studies in the literature, it can be said that sensory integration studies and interventions have gained momentum in our country in recent years. It is important to identify children's sensory difficulties with early diagnosis and early intervention to support development and to learn sensory strategies as soon as possible. Because there is no awareness of sensory integration problems, these problems are treated as problem behavior and behavior modification methods are applied for solution. Since the cause of the problem cannot be determined correctly, the problem situation does not disappear, which prevents the efficient execution of the educational process.

The Body, the Earth. The Participation of Disabled People in the Environmental Discourse

The Body, the Earth. The Participation of Disabled People in the Environmental Discourse

Author(s): Chiara Montalti / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The essay aims to challenge the position of disability within environmental analyses and activism. I explore the broad environmentally focused discourse: namely, I will refer to the sociocultural texts, ideologies and worldviews that are implicated in the accounts of the environmental crises provoked by climate change. Which subjects have a voice, and which tend to remain in the background? Should the environmental discourse be understood as “neutral”, because of what is at stake on a global level? I will consider these concerns through the lens of disability. Firstly, I will explore how disability usually functions as a signpost for two issues: (I) disabled people are represented as victims of the precarious living conditions exacerbated by climate change and environmental devastation and, (II) disability is employed as a cautionary tale regarding the outcomes of environmental devastation. Secondly, I will examine a performance called “The Mermaid”, by Australian artist Hanna Cormick, which addresses the intersection of disability and environmental damage. I will read Cormick’s work through Donna Haraway’s concept of witness, proposing an update of environmental discourses. The aim behind this new framework is to positively situate disabled people: they should play an active role in addressing toxicity, capitalist extractivism and the entangled nature between the human subject and the environment.

Analysis of polymorphism and development of a molecular-genetic system for genotyping by the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene

Analysis of polymorphism and development of a molecular-genetic system for genotyping by the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene

Author(s): A. Saienko,M. Peka,O. Tsereniuk,M. Babicz,K. Kropiwiec-Domańska,A. Onyshchenko,P. Vashchenko,V. Balatsky / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

This article explores the genetic variability of the gene that encodes telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), which plays a key role in maintaining telomere length and, as a result, genome stability in various eukaryotic species. The study employs a comprehensive approach that combines phylogenetic and bioinformatic analysis with molecular-genetic research methods. The research involved the screening of genetic databases to investigate TERT gene orthologues across organisms belonging to different systematic groups. The TERT gene, which is prevalent in a wide range of eukaryotic biological species, exhibits polymorphisms that have the potential to influence TERT enzyme function and, consequently, animal phenotypes. The primary focus of this study centers on the pig TERT gene, selected as a model organism due to its genetic similarity to humans and its importance as a productive agricultural species. The article explores the exon-intron structure of the TERT gene, analyzing the size of the corresponding transcript and protein product. Furthermore, it provides data on polymorphisms in the pig TERT gene, including missense and synonymous variants. The chromosomal localization of these polymorphisms is characterized and correlated with the domain structure of the TERT enzyme. For the evaluation of the impact of polymorphisms on the structural and functional properties of the TERT enzyme, a molecular-genetic system based on the PCR-RFLP method has been developed. This PCR-RFLP system serves as a basis for subsequent experimental analyses of missense and synonymous variants in population and association studies, allowing for an assessment of the prevalence of these polymorphisms and their significance for animal phenotypes. Given the significance of further laboratory investigation of the pig TERT gene, the developed PCR-RFLP system becomes necessary for the assessment of the functional implications of the polymorphisms within this gene and the potential identification of causative ones among them. The synergy of bioinformatics and molecular-genetic methods in this study lays the groundwork for future impactful research in this field. The presented study holds promise for marker-associated selection, as it opens the way for the use of the TERT gene as a marker in the genetic improvement of agricultural animal species.
