‘TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT PERSECUTION’: THE PERCEPTION AND THE ASSESSMENT OF THE BOLSHEVIK PERSECUTION OF THE CHURCH BY THE ORTHODOX CLERGY, WHO SERVED IN THE OCCUPIED TERRITORY IN 1941-1944, AND BY MEMBERS OF CHRISTIAN SEMINAR IN THE 1970S

Author(s): Ivan Petrov / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

This article concerns the assessment of the Bolshevik anti-religious policy in two key periods of the history of the Orthodox Church in Russia in the 20th century. The first period was the Nazi occupation, which in many ways lifted the self-censorship of the clergy and believers: the representatives of the clergy could openly and without embarrassment speak out about the Bolsheviks and their religious policies and give a moral assessment of the pre-war tragedy. The representatives of the episcopate and of the ordinary priesthood began to oppose Bolshevism, some due to their own career motives, some due to their convictions.

‘WHITE KERCHIEFS’ AGAINST ATHEISM

Author(s): Liudmila Artamoshkina / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

For 70 years the official religion of the Soviet power was atheism. How did it happen that not only was the existence of the Orthodox Church officially allowed but real faith was preserved outside official institutions as well as beyond the borders of state ideology? What were the ways of passing religious traditions from generation to generation? What were the main features of “people’s faith” phenomenon?

‘ПОРОЗНА’ ДРЖАВНОСТ VERSUS ТВРДЕ ГРАНИЦЕ: УТИЦАЈ ИСТОЧНО-ЕВРОПСКОГ ПРОШИРЕЊА ЕУ НА РУМУНИЈУ И ЈУГОСЛАВИЈУ

Author(s): Judy Batt / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1-2/2002

Topic of the article is the apparent contradiction between the Central and East Europeans’ enthusiasm for ‘returning to Europe’ after 1989, and their equally powerful affirmation of ‘national self-determination’, has frequently been remarked by western commentators. In the first part of this paper, author sets out the ideas of some key CEE political thinkers who grappled with the problem of statehood in this peculiarly vulnerable part of Europe from 1848 through to the inter-war period of the last century. These ideas in author’s view are of more than historical interest, not only because the same basic issues confront the post-communist reconstruction of states in CEE, but also because of their wider potential relevance for thinking about contemporary European statehood within the EU context of deepening internal integration and expanded external responsibilities.

“EDUS – EDUKACIJA ZA SVE” I DISKRIMINACIJA DJECE S POREMEĆAJIMA IZ AUTISTIČNOG SPEKTRA U BOSNI I HERCEGOVINI

Author(s): Nirvana Pištoljevic,Sanela Lindsay / Language(s): Bosnian / Publication Year: 0

Gotovo svaka druga osoba u BiH trpi socijalnu isključenost (Human Development Report on Social Exclusion in BiH, UNDP 2007).

“Fortune telling Is a Curse on Your Children”: Conversion, Fortune telling, and Beliefs in Magic among Roma Women in Estonia

“Fortune telling Is a Curse on Your Children”: Conversion, Fortune telling, and Beliefs in Magic among Roma Women in Estonia

Author(s): Eva-Liisa ROHT-YILMAZ / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

Missionary work by Pentecostal Finnish Roma (Kaale) started among the Roma in Estonia during the 1980s. These mission activities, carried out by both Finns and local Roma, intensified over the next two decades and continue today. The article looks into a specific case of how converted (Pentecostal and Baptist) and non-converted (Russian Orthodox, Lutheran, Catholic) Roma women in Estonia conceptualise the practice of fortune telling. For this purpose, the role of fortune telling as a traditional Roma skill and occupation is discussed as a part of the conceptualisation, together with the possible efficacy of fortune telling and its relation to beliefs in magic that also shape the women’s attitudes towards it. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the article argues that although fortune telling is considered satanic by born-again believers and is therefore abandoned, its condemnation is not straightforward in less controlled narration situations, thus posing an extra challenge for Roma women in the conversion process.

“ЗАПАДНИ БАЛКАН” – ПОЛИТИЧКИ КОНТЕКСТ И МЕДИЈСКА УПОТРЕБА

Author(s): Predrag Svilar / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 4/2010

By accessing the content analysis of media archives, available both on the Internet presentations of the most significant and most influential media, press agencies, web search engines, and official public institutions, international government and non-government organizations, we will make an attempt to point to political conditioning, appearances and uses, as well as political etymology of the term Western Balkans. The attention will also be called to the fact that the term has its origin in Anglo-Saxon political and historiographical tradition, through the examples of its use, as well as to the similarities of political relations which bring to its applicability. By analyzing the content of media inscriptions, reports, documents, official announcements, authorial reviews and analyses, it came to a conclusion that Western Balkans occurs as a regional reference in particular historical and political circumstances and that geographical frames it is being used within, could be located outside the time frames and there are specified the particularities of its use.

„ISTORIJA 20. VEKA” 1983-1992 - ANALIZA SADRŽAJA

Author(s): Svetlana Popovic / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2000

The journal "History of the 20th Century" has been published since 1983, containing the works of many Yugoslav and foreign historians, authors and thinkers from other fields of science. The journal presents original works of science, but also other forms of professional writings. The central subject matter the journal deals with is Yugoslav history from 1918 to the 90-ties. A few of the essays published have referred to general history and international relations. The works published from 1983 to 1992 primarily deal with the period from 1918 to 1953. In the first years of publication the journal mostly referred to themes regarding the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and its operation between the two world wars. Later this topic gave way to works dealing with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Works concerning World War Two are presented in every edition, particularly those dealing with the various aspects of the War of National Liberation and the revolution. Where topics concerning the period immediately following World War Two are concerned, most essays deal with the socialist period of Yugoslavia, especially the first ten years. The majority of the essays deal with political, diplomatic, and military history. A number of important historical subjects were never treated in the "History of the 20th Century", while others were first mentioned only seven or eight years after the beginning of the journal's publication. Ever since its first edition was published the "History of the 20th Century" has attracted the attention of the professional public, provoking interest, reactions, and discussion.

„Rózga i karcenie udziela mądrości…”. O społecznym micie przydatności bicia w wychowaniu

Author(s): Ewa Jarosz,Cezary Kurkowski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2 (33)/2016

The paper presents the problem of violence in upbringing from a historical and contemporary perspective. The reflection is focused on the situation in Poland – both in the past and today. A lot of historical resources indicate that violence in upbringing was a common reality for children in Poland from the Middle Ages and during the following centuries. Today in Poland violence in upbringing is banned in our law and although violent behaviors towards children are less popular and not as severe as in the past, still as a way of disciplining child violence is in some forms socially accepted. The paper presents the results of the survey carried out in 2015 which is part of the monitoring which has been conducted by the Ombudsman for Children since 2011.

„МАТЕРИЈАЛ“ У АДОРНОВОЈ СОЦИОЛОГИЈИ МУЗИКЕ

Author(s): Dragana Jeremic-Molnar,Aleksandar Molnar / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2008

In the article the authors are dealing with the musical “material” as the key concept of Theodor Adorno’s sociology of music. Being a synthesis of two, ideologically opposite – Schönberg’s and Marx’s – legacies, Adorno’s “material” combines also quite opposite meanings. On the one side, it echoes Schönberg’s theory of relationship between tone (as natural phenomena) and unconscious “instinct” (that transforms composer into some kind of the tool of nature, and whole mankind as well). On the other side, Adorno was following Karl Marx general theory of capitalism (all cultural phenomena are determined by the material production), with one crucial innovation. Adorno’s “material” was reflecting the lack of virtual communist revolution, instead of its preparation (in the bosom of totalitarian capitalism). As the result of Adorno’s “negative dialectics” in the field of music, it was carrying the message of the suppressed apocalypse.

Author(s): Aleksandar Molnar / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 2/2007

In the article the author is examining few parallels between the French Third republic and post-Milošević Serbia. He is dealing mostly with the phenomenon of (futile) revanchism in both countries, as well as with its impact on political life and perseverance of democracy. In the first period of its history (1871-1914), Third republic won the battle against revanchist challenge, provoked by the German amputation of Alsace and Lorraine. Nowdays, it is uncertain wheteher the young democracy in Serbia is capable of withstanding the same challenge, generated by the unsolved question of Kosovo and Metohija.

This paper outlines the genesis and development of Serbian sociology in the 20th century. The first institutional center of sociology in Serbia was the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. In the period between the two World Wars, sociology was especially needed by lawyers, who were searching ways to establish a modern legal system in the new Yugoslav state, which was burdened with many structural and developmental problems such as: (1) form of state government and political relations among the South Slavs, (2) class and regional inequalities, (3) delayed and uneven modernization of underdeveloped peasant society.

Author(s): Center for the Study of Democracy CSD / Language(s): Bulgarian / Publication Year: 2013

The decision to decrease by 5% the retail electricity prices as of 1 August 2013 is among the topics at the heart of political debates in Bulgaria this autumn. A similar move in 2010 clearly showed that such a politically mandated price decrease was not sustainable in the long run. It ended in the sharp increase (13% y-o-y) of electricity prices in 2012, and subsequent social unrest, which brought down the Bulgarian government in February 2013. The focus on the final consumer bill reduction in the public debate overshadows some of the other structural effects of the decision, which are worth mentioning.
