Borderline Knowing: (Re)Valuing Borderline Personality Disorder as (Counter) Knowledge

Borderline Knowing: (Re)Valuing Borderline Personality Disorder as (Counter) Knowledge

Author(s): Sarah Redikopp / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2018

This article explores Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as an epistemic standpoint defiant of dominant Western knowledge frameworks, which are (supposedly) rational, objective and linear. I engage with feminist, critical psychiatry and Mad critiques of BPD as a medicalization of trauma and ameliorate these critiques by engaging BPD as both a psychiatric diagnosis and as a (non-pathological) response to traumatic experiences. I conceptualize the ‘borderline standpoint’ as a subversive epistemology and examine the capacity of queer-crip temporalities to meaningfully engage with the borderline standpoint, arguing that a framework of queer time is useful insofar as trauma (and borderline knowing) are necessarily nonlinear. Ultimately, I employ concepts of queer-crip time, including the works of Alison Kafer and Elizabeth Freeman, to open new avenues of engagement with the ‘ugly’ affect of borderline and to embark on a maddening epistemological project.

Use of Mobile Applications in Smoking, Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders

Author(s): Halil İbrahim Bilkay,Nermin Gürhan,Burak Şirin / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Currently, technology and mobile health applications are developing and being applied in different fields every day. Especially the use of mobile technology in many health fields offers various opportunities for the use of mobile applications in smoking, alcohol and substance use disorders, which is an important public mental health problem. The aim of this review study was to examine 16 mobile applications designed for the treatment and monitoring of smoking, alcohol and substance use. It was concluded that self-monitoring, notification and warning systems, location services, peer and expert support services were frequently used in the analyzed mobile applications. As a result of the studies, the use of mobile applications as a preventive intervention in the prevention of addiction and as an additional treatment option in addiction treatment is promising. However, this situation brings along various harms, risks and obstacles. This review of the relevant literature provides a critical update of mobile applications used in smoking, alcohol and substance use disorders. This review is expected to be an important guide for mental health professionals and mobile application designers working on addiction.

Влиянието на пандемията от ковид-19 върху самовъзприятието за тревожност, депресивност и психично благополучие на българите в зряла възраст

Author(s): Ivanka Asenova,Liliana Stoyanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 14/2022

The report presents the results of a study aiming to examine possible changes in the levels of anxiety, depression and psychological well-being, which occurred in Bulgarians due to living in the Covid-19 pandemic for two years. A total of 76 individuals aged 22-60 years (average age 38 years; 32 men and 44 women; 39 of whom had recovered from Covid-19) were examined through three self-assessment questionnaires adapted for the Bulgarian population: the Spielberger's anxiety test, the Heubeck and Neill’s Mental Health Inventory and the Zung’s Depression Scale. The participants were asked to complete the questionnaires twice – once assessing themselves at the present moment and once for the period before the Covid-19 pandemic, with at least 3-5 days between the two assessments. The results showed a significant increase in the levels of psychological distress, state anxiety and depression, and a decrease in psychological well-being two years after the start of the pandemic, with both gender and recovery from Covid-19 having significant effects on the pattern of changes found.

DE LA GESTION DES EMOTIONS A LA GESTION DES EXAMENS DE LANGUE POUR DES MEILLEURS RESULTATS. LA VOIE DE LA PLEINE CONSCIENCE (MINDFULNESS)

DE LA GESTION DES EMOTIONS A LA GESTION DES EXAMENS DE LANGUE POUR DES MEILLEURS RESULTATS. LA VOIE DE LA PLEINE CONSCIENCE (MINDFULNESS)

Author(s): Laura Cizer / Language(s): French Issue: 30/2022

Most often than not, when sitting for an exam a lot of emphasis is put on what the exam contains (structure, types of tasks, grading, etc.), and little or no emphasis at all on what students may feel before or on the day of the exam, overlooking the fact that that exams are governed by a great tension which translates into strong emotions. They constitute a real and undeniable enemy against making good decisions. Therefore, this paper advocates the use of mindfulness in language classes as a means of ensuring students’ mental comfort and developing their ability to focus (attention). It also puts forward a practical, applied and explained approach to mindfulness by showcasing such activities as box breathing, bodyscan, name it to tame strategy that will lead students towards a better management of their strong feelings and emotions. Last but not least, several activities around the Inside Out movie that will connect students with their inner self. All in all, this paper aims to show how mental and emotional balance can be regained through fairly simple tools.

THEORIES OF MOTIVATION AND THE HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS

THEORIES OF MOTIVATION AND THE HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS

Author(s): Oana-Mălina Stoian / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2022

Through motivation, the individual can automatically regulate his behavior, being a force in the development of his personality. Important in this regard is the dynamics of motivation, because in this way the reverse connection is made, the basis of the development of motivation for learning. Motivation can also be seen as an effect of the learning activity, not only as a condition, when the student records positive results. Therefore, we can affirm the fact that there is a "cause-effect" relationship between motivation and learning. Thus, in the specialized literature, a series of theories are identified that position motivation at a higher level or, on the contrary, classify it as being close to the biological side of the individual.

SELF-ESTEEM AND DECISION-MAKING STYLES IN ADOLESCENTS

SELF-ESTEEM AND DECISION-MAKING STYLES IN ADOLESCENTS

Author(s): Maria Pleșca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2022

The article describes the characteristics of adolescent decision-making concerning the particularities of self-esteem. The results of an empirical study of the relationship between self-esteem and decision- making styles are presented. The obtained results demonstrate that most adolescents with a low level of self-esteem use-dependent and avoidant decision-making styles. Teenagers who have a medium or high level of self-esteem use the rational style, the intuitive style, and the spontaneous style. The existence of a directly proportional relationship between self-esteem and decision-making styles - rational, intuitive, spontaneous - was established, but between self-esteem and the dependent style and the avoidant style there is a strong inversely proportional relationship. Thus, it follows that teenagers with a high level of self-esteem will use more rational styles, and those with low self-esteem will use irrational styles.

AXIOLOGICAL IDEALS AND PREFERENCES. COMPARATIVE CROSS-CULTURAL STUDY

Author(s): Tatiana Roșca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 34/2023

Adolescence is the time when the ideals and set of values that guide the choices and behavior of young people are formed. Each generation constructs its own values in relation to the social and cultural context. The paper provides a picture of what today's teenagers think and answers the questions: What are the values of contemporary teenagers, according to gender and location? How do masculine and feminine values differ in today's youth? Questions that make us understand the impact of the sociocultural context on axiological choices and their influence on the attitude system of teenagers towards themselves, the world around them, as well as the possibility of predicting the direction of their behavior.

THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER ON COPING MECHANISMS OF THE ELDERLY

THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER ON COPING MECHANISMS OF THE ELDERLY

Author(s): Monica Andreea Popescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 34/2023

Old age is the last stage of life and with the transition from middle age comes the need for adjustments in behavior and thinking in order to maintain good physical and mental health. It is important for older people to have adequate coping strategies to minimize the emotional consequences of such stressful situations and to adapt adequately to them. It should be remembered that aging itself is a process of physical, social and psychological changes and thus it is impetuously necessary for the elderly to have adequate strategies to minimize emotional consequences such as stressful situations and to adapt to them.

Erori de producere a cuvintelor în context afazic

Erori de producere a cuvintelor în context afazic

Author(s): Eliza DARIE (MORARU) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

This article is part of the paper „Patterns and errors of word production in aphasic contexts”. To begin with, generalities about aphasia and a cognitive neuropsychology model of spoken word production are presented, which addresses four stages involved in word retrieval: semantic system, phonological output lexicon, phonological set, and articulatory programming, and finally speech. Also, as a theoretical aspect, the three types of word utterance errors are presented: the imaginability, frequency, and length effects. The theoretical aspects are then exemplified in a case study. The aim of the research was to identify from a neurocognitive point of view in which domain the disorder is located, and which pattern of word production errors can be identified, in order to intervene specifically in language recovery, proposing an intervention plan. Among the conclusions, it can be mentioned that although aphasic symptomatology is well known, the approach from the proposed perspective created specific opportunities for recovery.

The Biological Unconscious, Memory and Identity in Charles Fernyhough’s A Box of Birds

The Biological Unconscious, Memory and Identity in Charles Fernyhough’s A Box of Birds

Author(s): Maria Margaroni / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This essay proposes to critically engage with dominant materialist and narrative models of human identity, addressing the old, ‘tired’ question of subjectivity from a twenty-first century perspective. Drawing on contemporary neuroscientific theory and Lacanian psychoanalysis, I aim to read Charles Fernyhough’s A Box of Birds (2012) as a creative reflection on the nature of memory, consciousness and the unconscious. As I shall demonstrate, what lies at the heart of Fernyhough’s reflection is the Platonic allegory of the mind as an aviary. Taken up and re-interpreted by different characters in the novel, this allegory permits Fernyhough to experiment with contemporary discourses of neuro-subjectivity, tracing a richer, more dynamic relation among mind, brain and body.

A PERSONALITY JOURNEY – HISTORY, DEFINITIONS AND THEORIES OF PERSONALITY

A PERSONALITY JOURNEY – HISTORY, DEFINITIONS AND THEORIES OF PERSONALITY

Author(s): Camelia Ioana Ienciu (Popa) / Language(s): English Issue: 36/2024

The article brings into discussion the history, several definitions and distinct theories of personality, all presented and described in a nutshell. Personality psychology belongs to the category of one of the most comprehensive and integrative branches of the psychological sciences. Defining personality is not an easy assignment, and the different answers given by people, theorists or psychologists have found expression throughout history in distinct fields such as philosophy, religion, law, art, politics or science. Each person understands the term ‘personality’ in different manners and, perhaps, this is the main reason why there can be found so many personality theories. One of the most important aspects of each personality theory has to deal with the image of human nature. Therefore, theorists express their personal conception of human nature, which concentrates on the fundamental issues of what it truly means to be human. Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, Alfred Adler and Erik Erikson are only several names that belong to the psychodynamic theories which emphasize the unconscious. People’s consciousness can hardly embrace various significant characteristics of personality held beyond awareness. Sigmund Freud is the theorist who elaborated the first theory of personality, entitled psychoanalysis. He explains that the most part of our personality is unconscious and that the individuals’ instincts are merely sexual and aggressive. Carl Jung is well-known for the theory named analytical psychology. He considered the unconscious as being notably important, but in many other aspects he disagreed with Freud. For instance, in Jung’s opinion, there are many other valuable instincts besides sexuality and aggressiveness. Alfred Adler is another famous name who invented another theory of personality, the individual psychology. Unlike Freud or Jung, Alfred believed that the unconscious is meaningless and that personality is not shaped by instincts at all.

The Beauty of the Human Face in Contemporary Interdisciplinary Discourse

The Beauty of the Human Face in Contemporary Interdisciplinary Discourse

Author(s): Renáta Kišoňová / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The face serves as a fascinating focal point for exploring different perspectives and attitudes on human nature, including their identity, boundaries, culture, roles, the function of looks, beauty, religion, imagination, memory and more. In this paper, I will explore the analysis of facial beauty in the framework of contemporary interdisciplinary research, particularly the realms of contemporary cognitive science, neuropsychology, and evolutionary biology. Why do we prefer some faces and not others? What mechanisms underlie the evaluation of some faces as more attractive than others? What is the role of evolution in our perception of facial beauty?

Compulsive sexual behaviour in Iranian married women: Prevalence, sociodemographic, sexual, and psychological predictors across-country

Compulsive sexual behaviour in Iranian married women: Prevalence, sociodemographic, sexual, and psychological predictors across-country

Author(s): ELNAZ KHAYER,REZVAN ZAREI,MARYAM DAMGHANIAN,Beáta Böthe,FARNAZ FARNAM / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Background and Aims: This study addresses the scarcity of research on Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) in non-Western cultures and women, exploring its prevalence, sociodemographic, sexual history characteristics, and sexual and psychological health factors in Iranian married women. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 772 heterosexual married women was conducted between 2022 and 2023, covering all 31 provinces of Iran. Participants were categorized as CSBDþ (at-risk individuals) and CSBD (low-risk individuals) based on a pre-established cut-off point of ≥18 by the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale 7. Depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-esteem, sexual distress, sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and sexual dysfunction were assessed as psychological and sexual health variables by standardized scales. Results: The prevalence of CSBD was 3.8% in women. Linear regression analysis showed that lower education, being jobless, substance use, pornography use, paraphilic behaviors, conflict on sex frequency, relationship, orgasm and sexual dissatisfaction, higher sexual arousal, depression, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were positively associated with CSBD. The univariate analysis, at a stringent significance level of 0.005, mirrored the regression findings. Additionally, women with CSBDþ exhibited lower religiousness and higher anxiety compared to those without CSBD. Discussion and Conclusions: Raising awareness of CSBD is crucial for health systems and individuals for better policy-making and help-seeking behavior. Identifying risk factors like substance use presents opportunities for prevention, and the association of CSBD with sexual and mental health variables suggests addressing co-occurring issues for improved treatment outcomes. Recognizing culture and gender-specific sexual and psychological correlates enables targeted and effective treatment approaches.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYSFUNCTIONAL MENTAL SCHEMAS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE IN STUDENTS

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYSFUNCTIONAL MENTAL SCHEMAS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE IN STUDENTS

Author(s): Maria Pleşca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The current state of the problem of personal resilience development at the stage of mastering the future profession is relevant to optimize and improve the effectiveness of the process of education and training in higher education. The level of youth resilience is closely related to the nature of the adaptation process, including the formation of maladaptive patterns at the early stages of ontogenesis. The manifestations of resilience (engagement, control, risk-taking) reflect the success of the process of adaptation to external conditions; the process of resilience development itself depends on several factors. Resilience is influenced by an individual's personal qualities, as well as the conditions in which strategies for coping with difficult situations are formed. Maladaptive behavioral patterns acquired at early stages of ontogenesis reduce resilience indicators, which form the individual's vulnerability to adverse environmental effects. The conducted research allows us to state that individuals characterized by cognitive and behavioral flexibility and individuals characterized by cognitive and behavioral rigidity are prone to show opposite coping tendencies; the coping process is more successful in individuals characterized by cognitive and behavioral flexibility who do not show pronounced dysfunctional mental schemas. The study allows us to state that: the structural components of resilience in different age groups have various levels of manifestation: the indicators of involvement and risk-taking increase with age, as well as the integral indicator of resilience.

LINGUISTIC AND COGNITIVE PERSPECTIVES ON MEDITATION: THE ROLE OF ORIENTAL TECHNIQUES IN LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND STRESS REDUCTION

LINGUISTIC AND COGNITIVE PERSPECTIVES ON MEDITATION: THE ROLE OF ORIENTAL TECHNIQUES IN LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND STRESS REDUCTION

Author(s): Cristina-Dana Popescu,Cristian Opariuc Dan / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

This paper examines the impact of Eastern meditation techniques, including mindfulness, yoga, Qigong, transcendental meditation, and breathing exercises, on cognitive functions and stress reduction. The paper focuses on the neuroplastic mechanisms that underlie these effects, exploring how meditation influences brain structure and function. Although numerous studies support the cognitive and psychological benefits of meditation, significant methodological limitations remain, such as small sample sizes, inconsistent assessment tools, and the lack of standardized meditation protocols. The study highlights the most relevant research findings from the past eight years (2016–2024), providing an overview of key theoretical frameworks, assessment methods, and existing gaps in knowledge. Furthermore, it underscores the need for longitudinal studies and cross-cultural research to establish a more comprehensive understanding of meditation’s role in cognitive enhancement and stress management. By synthesizing current evidence, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on meditation as a scientifically grounded tool for improving mental well-being.

Narratives at the Crossroads: Media Reporting on Suicide in Slovenia in the Context of Sociopolitical Changes in 1959-1999

Narratives at the Crossroads: Media Reporting on Suicide in Slovenia in the Context of Sociopolitical Changes in 1959-1999

Author(s): Vanja Gomboc,Polonca Borko,Nuša Zadravec Šedivy,Vita Postuvan / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This study examines the representation of suicide in Slovenian newspapers from 1959 to 1999, a period characterised by profound socio-political changes. By analysing 1,785 articles from the archives of two major newspapers, Delo and Večer, we identified a dynamic relationship between the style of media reporting on suicide and the evolving societal context. Our findings suggest a transition from predominantly provocative to increasingly preventive reporting on suicide over the decades. Interestingly, despite an overall trend towards preventive approaches, the ratio of provocative to preventive aspects per article consistently favoured provocative reporting in each period studied. In the early years studied, reporting on suicide tended to be sensationalised, which could be due to a variety of factors, including less informed media practices. In the 1990s, however, a surprising increase in both preventive and provocative reporting was observed, coinciding with Slovenia’s independence and the liberalisation of the media. This mixed trend contrasts with worldwide studies, but underlines the link between media, socio-political changes and public perception of suicide. The study highlights the significance of the media, and the challenge of balancing public interest and social responsibility when reporting on suicide.
