#METOO AND US POLITICS: ANALYSING THE TWITTER CONVERSATION

#METOO AND US POLITICS: ANALYSING THE TWITTER CONVERSATION

Author(s): Vittoria Bernardini / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

The #MeToo movement has had a profound cultural impact on US society, and notably on US party politics. While many studies have addressed the #MeToo-related controversy arising from the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to Supreme Court Justice in 2018, the relationship between #MeToo and US politics before this event has remained understudied. This article, therefore, addresses this gap by looking at the role of politics at the beginning of the #MeToo movement. Focusing on the first six months of online activity on Twitter (October 2017 – April 2018), over 2 million tweets with the #MeToo hashtag are analyzed to identify the main activity patterns across the dataset and to gain insight on user behavior and participation in the conversation. Results point to the weaponization of #MeToo in the political context from its inception. It is suggested that #MeToo reflects the polarized political climate in the US and that it can be conceptualized as part of the wider “culture wars” (Hunter 1991) that characterize the public debate.

(RE)SHAPING POLITICAL CULTURE AND PARTICIPATION THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS

Author(s): Marija Andreeva / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

The influence of social networks is growing intensely. They do not only influence only certain aspects of our lives, but they also influence political participation and political culture. In recent years, this influence has been very notable. We have seen a change of policies as a result of pressure, a lot of significant political movements started via social networks. This paper concentrates on the influence of social networks on political participation and political culture. The paper tries to foresee the future implications and the intertwining of social networks and political culture and political participation. It also gives conclusions for the past, present and future implications and it gives a comparison between political participation before and after the rise of social networks. It also analyses the positive and negative implications that social network could have on political participation.

A tranzitológiának vége, felejtsük el? Az átmenet tervezett intézményeitől a tervezetlen hibridizációig

A tranzitológiának vége, felejtsük el? Az átmenet tervezett intézményeitől a tervezetlen hibridizációig

Author(s): Ervin Csizmadia / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 2/2016

The essay focuses on answering the question of what happened to transitology, the main narrative of the 1989–90 process of democratization, after it prevailed. The theory lasted for just one decade and already at the beginning of the millennium Thomas Carothers declared the end of transitology. However, many things happened between its birth and demise. This essay aims to map this intermediate phase, as well as to present two experiments for the theoretical adaptation of transitology: the theories concerning the foundation and consolidation of institutions, and those concerning the creation of hybrid and illiberal regimes. The analysis would like to call attention to the fact that the theories of the period of transition were far from identical, they went through serious changes during the 90s. These changes however came about not outside of the trend, but within, therefore the approach of the founding theory pervades these pieces of writing. In some places the essay refers to criticisms incurred by transition theories, nevertheless, these are external critiques of transitology, therefore the essay only speaks of these tangentially. The author comes to the conclusion that though transitology has run out of wind, the theoretical and attitudinal lessons of it remain largely unprocessed to this day.

A violent structure. Southern perspective on the practice of forensic anthropology as a public service

A violent structure. Southern perspective on the practice of forensic anthropology as a public service

Author(s): Katarzyna Górka / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Global South perspective rarely reaches the academic vanguard. While they represent over 80% of the world population, the voices from less developed regions often are ignored in academic debate. This fact produces an important disequilibrium in relation to the dissemination of knowledge, sharing of experiences and exchange of thoughts and, consequently, undermines and hinders the development of scientific disciplines. Forensic anthropology is no exception in this trend. The present article brings up the subject of the context of forensic anthropology in Brazil to demonstrate the interconnection of the professional situation of this discipline, its structural and bureaucratic limitations and their effect on the perpetuation of human rights violation. Various aspects of daily practice of forensic anthropology in a context devoid of basic resources generate a setting that affects both the victims and their families. Despite an outstanding performance and dedication of professionals, structural limitations often substantially affect the effectiveness of their service. The present article discusses these aspects in a conceptual framework of the relation between the practice of forensic anthropology and human rights violation. In this research, Brazil serves as a case-study, an intensively studied subject that brings interpretations that can be applied in a broader context. The article aims at opening a broader, international debate that would increase the visibility of the relationship between the practice of forensic anthropology and the structure generating and/or maintaining violence in a specific economic and legislative context especially present in the countries of the so-called global South.

The problems regarding funding of the R&D area (below 0.5% of GDP), below the majority level of EU countries, deficitary (including the presence of corruption) organizing of R&D activity, destruction of human resources, of specialists who work in the R & D area, their humiliation and lack of social dialogue, are the main factors who contribute systematically, for 25 years, "step by step", to the irreversible destruction of R & D.

AFGHANISTAN UNDER TALIBAN: A NEW REGIME POSES A THREAT TO INTERNATIONAL STABILITY

Author(s): Valeri Modebadze / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The purpose of this study was to see whether the Taliban regime poses a threat to the international community. The research primarily examined the threats that the formation of a theocratic regime in Afghanistan poses to neighboring countries and the international community. With regards to research methods, a document analysis method was used to obtain valid information and to analyze and describe the complex situation in Afghanistan. A wide array of documents and scholarly articles were analyzed to obtain reliable and objective information. This research revealed that the Taliban has not changed at all and still rules Afghanistan with medieval methods and strategies. Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the economic situation has deteriorated considerably and people face severe hardship. Therefore, hundreds of thousands of Afghans want to leave their homeland and migrate to the West. The Taliban violates constantly human rights and discriminates against women, ethnic and religious minorities. The Taliban has transformed Afghanistan into a narco-state. Neighboring countries fear that Afghanistan might become a hotbed of terrorism and extremism again.

AKSJONORMATYWNY PARADYGMAT NAUKI PRAWA ADMINISTRACYJNEGO I JEGO METODOLOGICZNE KONSEKWENCJE DLA NAUKI ADMINISTRACJI I NAUKI POLITYKI ADMINISTRACYJNEJ

Author(s): Sławomir Peszkowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 28/2020

Normative constructions of administrative law are the function of values distinguished for the common good (public’s well-being). In parallel, administrative law creates the basis for the performance of public administration, whose differentia specifica is the realization or protection of legally relevant values in a direct manner. From the perspective of these general assumptions, it becomes justified to conceptualize the axionormative paradigm of the science of administrative law as a research concept applicable to detailed research, without the need to reconstruct the theoretical and methodological basis each time. This provides the universal theoretical and methodological basis for dogmatic studies in the field of administrative law. From the perspective of the triad of administrative science, the acceptance of the axionormative paradigm in the science of administrative law provides the basis for reconstructing theoretically adequate and coherent methodological assumptions in relation to the science of administration and the science of administrative policy. These assumptions can be put in the form of an axionormative explanatory scheme adapted to the specifics of these sciences. The assumption of an axionormative explanatory scheme in the field of science of administration and science of administrative policy allows for an adequate identification of eufunctions and dysfunctions of public administration, in a way that respects the constitutive conditions of public administration in a democratic state ruled by law.

Almondov koncept političkog sistema

Almondov koncept političkog sistema

Author(s): Štefica Deren-Antoljak / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 02/1986

In spite of the fact that American political science is comparatively well developed, before the 1950s there have been no comprehensive analyses nor any comparative research into the problems of contemporary political systems. During the last twenty years new analytical instruments, procedures and techniques for the study of political processes have been worked out, and an enormous amount of empirical material concerning political systems both in developed and in developing countries has been collected. All this has made it possible that a method of comparative analysis should be established, that can also be applied to contemporary political systems. In American political science Gabriel Almond has particular merits for the elaboration of a comparative method in that field. This paper deals with the efforts of G. Almond, J. Coleman, and B. Powell to work out a theoretical approach convenient for the comparison of contemporary political systems.

An Analysis of the Failure of the Peace Process (2013-2015) with PKK through the Ripeness Theory

An Analysis of the Failure of the Peace Process (2013-2015) with PKK through the Ripeness Theory

Author(s): Oktay Bingöl / Language(s): English Issue: 30/2022

Turkey has experienced a protracted conflict with the PKK since 1984. Over the history of almost 30 years of the violent conflict, the first comprehensive and overt peace attempt was launched by Turkish government in 2013. It had lasted for two years with great optimism and high expectations on reaching a political settlement before it failed in July 2015. This article aims to explore the reasons of the failure of 2013-2015 negotiations and examines whether conditions were suitable for launching a ‘peace process’ in 2013 to resolve Turkey’s conflict with the PKK. It draws on three main elements of Zartman’s Ripeness theory: mutually hurting stalemate (MHS), a formula for a way out and valid spokespersons. It is argued in the article that the conflict in Turkey was not in fact ripe enough for negotiations which were initiated and conducted hastily without any formula for way out and with problematic spokespersons.

Author(s): Robert Dragos / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2018

The 9/11 terrorist attacks upon the United States urged Romania to criminalise terrorist acts by adopting the Government Emergency Ordinance no. 141/2001 on punishment of terrorist acts and breaching the public order provisions. The first stage of response, the Government Emergency Ordinance no. 141/2001, becomes insufficient to prevent and fight efficiently against terrorism, as a result in 2004 is adopted Law no. 535/2004 on preventing and combating terrorism, a complex law which consists of five chapters and 47 articles. Several amendments have been made to the Law in order to respond adequatly and efficiently to emerging threats. The paper presents a comparative analysis between the GEO no. 141/2001 on punishment of terrorist acts and breaching the public order provisions and Law no. 535/2004 on preventing and combating terrorism.

ANALYSIS OF THE INTEGRITY INDEX FOR PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN THE ALBANIAN DEVELOPING REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

ANALYSIS OF THE INTEGRITY INDEX FOR PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN THE ALBANIAN DEVELOPING REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

Author(s): Andon Kume / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This research aimed to analyze the Albanian parliamentary elections held in 2013, 2017, and 2021 in order to evaluate the process of development of representative democracy in Albania, one of the post-communist countries of the Western Balkans. The analysis was based on assessing the dynamics of the Electoral Integrity Index (PEI) as a quantitative indicator that reflects the level of fulfillment of international standards for democratic elections. The PEI was evaluated using the average perception values for 11 indicators reflecting the election process. Based on the value of the PEI2013 (54.1 scores), PEI2017 (53.3 scores), and PEI2021 (57.7 scores), the parliamentary elections in Albania were considered as processes that do not exceed the ‘moderate’ level. The non-significant difference between 2013, 2017, and 2021 PEI (p>0.05) demonstrated low progress in developing democratic performances in Albanian society.

And Yet the Black Sea Can Be an Essential Geostrategic Pivot in the Solution of Euro-Asiatic Endogenous Conflictuality

And Yet the Black Sea Can Be an Essential Geostrategic Pivot in the Solution of Euro-Asiatic Endogenous Conflictuality

Author(s): Sebastian-Gabriel Popescu / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

One of the geopolitical and geostrategic synthesis key areas on the strategic axis Black Sea - Baltic Sea reluctance re-opened following the Ukrainian crisis is the more or less extensive Black Sea region. The historical, political, economic and civilian arguments, as well as the new challenges of the regional security environment, but also cross-border and global, leave the great powers on both sides of the strategic axis Black Sea - Baltic and riparian countries a chance that we consider not only an alternative to ... war, otherness, but also a way of transforming divergences into confluences and confluence in unity, prosperity and security. Even though the complicated and tense realities at this point seem not to encourage such a prospect, we believe that the Black Sea area can become − and indeed become − an East-West welding space, a true geopolitical and geostrategic, economic, social synapse and inter-civilization, which will put an end to the strategic flaw effect here in bitter weather. In the following, we will present this point of view.

Approaches in the Political Science Today

Author(s): Ciprian Iftimoaei / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

In over 2,000 years of existence, approaches in political science evolved from philosophical and normative reflections on various forms of organization of the ancient world to contemporary interdisciplinary approaches based on refining concepts and theories accumulated over time and the use of complex research methodologies, own or borrowed from related fields of studies such as sociology, political psychology, econometrics, advanced statistics. Although quantitative approaches prevails in contemporary research, does not lack political philosophy studies, theoretical and ideological approaches, inspired by everyday realities and empirical research results.

ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION WITH THIRD COUNTRIES: THE CASE OF THE EURASIAN ECONOMIC UNION

ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION WITH THIRD COUNTRIES: THE CASE OF THE EURASIAN ECONOMIC UNION

Author(s): Simon Sngryan / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

https://www.doi.org/10.47305/JLIA2282035s The processes of objectively conditioned integration in the economic, political, legal, and institutional spheres of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) Member States took place step by step, starting from preferential trade agreements, passing to the customs union, the common market and other stages of integration. This process is accompanied by the gradual deepening of trade liberalization with potential partners. The selection of potential partners should be carried out through a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the structure and volumes of foreign trade of the EEU Member States (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia) with third parties, their markets structure, existing customs regulation, trade barriers, and possible export potential. The research evaluated the EEU's possible enlargement effects on the Member States' economic indicators. The research aimed to assess the possible consequences of EEU expansion and signing free trade agreements, considering Pakistan, Korea, and Malaysia as potential trade partners. Modeling the effect of an FTA assumes horizontal zeroing of tariffs between partners. Then, using the GTAP model, a new state of general equilibrium was calculated corresponding to the changed parameters of customs and tariff regulation. In this case, most variables, such as change in GDP, production output, and export-import volumes, were estimated, manifesting the economic effect of trade liberalization.
