Секуляризация идеи церкви в трудах научной интеллигенции Украинской ССР второй половины 1980-х гг.

Секуляризация идеи церкви в трудах научной интеллигенции Украинской ССР второй половины 1980-х гг.

Author(s): R. A. Savchuk / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2021

In modern conditions, there is an increased public attention to the religious factor in the interstate relations between Russia and Ukraine. The growing tension in the development and internal structure of the Orthodox Church has been observed in Ukraine since the declaration of independence, when parallel Orthodox Church organizations with different attitudes to the issue of autocephaly and cultural and political orientation began to form on the territory of the state. This article attempts to analyze the main directions in understanding the role and place of the church factor. It was in the second half of the 1980 s that the foundations were laid for the development of discussions on the development of the national church after Ukraine's declaration of independence. With the help of historical-typological and historical-comparative methods, the publications of Ukrainian historians, literary critics, philosophers and public figures of the second half of the 1980 s are analyzed. Conclusions about the formation of two directions of the secularization of the idea of the Church in the worldview of the Ukrainian secular intelligentsia of this period are substantiated. The rational-sensuous direction is typical for representatives of nationalist-minded circles. The authors in this direction valued the authority of the Church as an autonomous public institution, but sought to subordinate it to the national idea, to put it at the service of the state ideology. The second direction — conventionally called utilitarian instrumentalist-developed on the basis of Soviet atheist ideology and considered the Church and religion as a whole as an element of ideology, an instrument for the implementation of political power and public consciousness.

STAT CENTRAL ȘI REGIUNE: FONDUL RELIGIONAR GRECO-ORIENTAL

Author(s): Kurt Scharr / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2021

In Bukovina, the reformist steps initiated by Emperor Joseph II proved to be lasting in terms of both content and structural and regional perspective. From the point of view of content, the institution of the Religious Fund supported during the19th century a range of political ideas, from supranational ones, promoting the framework state, to the national-irredentist ones, while both aspects concerned with different weights both at the center and the periphery in question had their starting point there. Structurally, the process of institutionalization, i.e. the transition from a form of pure, normative organization, originally installed from the center to an institution that contributes to the active shaping of both space and society, was a decisive one. However, the regional aspect was more complex and therefore the idea, closely linked to it, of an identity of the framework state. The clerical regulatory plan drawn up at the end of the 18th century for Bukovina, which gave both the consistory – hence the church administration – and the Religious Fund a 'constitution', was the central moment. This was about the territorial annexation of the state outwards, to which the new organization of the Greek-Oriental (provincial) Church belonged, which in turn was again a milestone in the structuring of the state administration inwards. Moreover, both the Church and the Fund functioned over the long duration as a substrate for the establishment of a provincial consciousness among the inhabitants of Bukovina, having a strong appeal to the idea of an Austrian framework state. The institution of the religious fund drew its legitimacy from its own stability over time and – which is quite essential – from its connection to space. This resulted in a large overlap of one's own, i.e. institutional, interests with the orientation models provided by the State. Its mission was – beyond the preservation of church infrastructure – to modernize the province according to the needs of the state. Starting from this, the Episcopates of Hackman and Morariu-Andriewicz did not necessarily represent a contradiction, given that the Religious Fund, as an institutional actor, represented Vienna's interests as loyally as it represented, at the same time, within its own lines, the sometimes fierce discussions on the national issue. Both Hackman and Saguna were bishops no doubt loyal to the dynasty and thereby to the state, instead having social-political backgrounds that differed significantly. The question of the church congress presented itself for both hierarchies of ambivalent between the modern currents of the right to political decision and the national component of transformation. Morariu-Andriewicz's period of shepherding took advantage, in a movement contrary to that of his predecessor, of the national realm in the matter of a Genuine Romanian-Orthodox Provincial Church and its Fund. With its policy, the national character of the debate within the Church related to structure and missions acquired a dynamic, which could not later be pushed to the edge and which, in addition, spurred the audience outwards. As a result of this development, both the Orthodox Church and the institution of the Religious Fund became the scene of a conflict between the Ruthenians and the Romanians in Bukovina, initially politically energized, then further used as an instrument by individuals as well as parties. As of the transition to the 20th century, however, imperial and provincial politics also played a decisive role in efforts to find consensus on the structure and work of these institutions, so that here were created – although not always successfully – regular mediation mechanisms that contributed to the temporary de-escalation of the situation. The religious fund thereby mirrored not only in a clearly visible way the dominant discourses of the province before 1914; institutional transformation as well as the national issue were, with nuanced intensities, between the driving forces of change in the province and within the Fund. Radical positions within the institution of the Religious Fund succeeded in imposing themselves only after the break-up of the imperial context. The landscape, completely changed with the conclusion of the peace treaties and the political-territorial reordering, seemed to bring, in the first stage, the much-hoped-for national autonomy for the Church and its institution. In any case, the opposite has become a reality in the medium term: a gradual loss of regional decision-making authority over the Religious Fund, as well as on the church structure of Bukovina towards Bucharest’s policy. The Romanian national state had given upon taking a relatively neutral position and aimed at achieving consensus. With this one can recognize an erosion of trust in both the Fund and the Provincial Church(of legitimacy!) and ultimately a visible weakening of them. Neither was able to sustainably stop the politicization of their institutions, a process that was wreaking havoc in the Kingdom of Romania during the interwar period. They have lost their role as regional mediators of collective social and political interests between Bukovina and the center, in continuous coordination with the conceptions of the state.

Survival Strategies Under a Totalitarian Regime (1940–1990): A Case of Roman Catholic Nuns in Lithuania

Survival Strategies Under a Totalitarian Regime (1940–1990): A Case of Roman Catholic Nuns in Lithuania

Author(s): Rasa Račiūnaitė-Paužuolienė / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

The paper presents how different surviving strategies of Lithuanian Roman Catholic nuns were used in the Soviet totalitarian regime (1940–1990). The research is focused on the life stories of Lithuanian women from three Roman Catholic religious orders – Sisters of the Poor (or Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary), The Little Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Franciscan sisters, whose activities in Soviet times were clandestine. This paper represents the issue of monastic life claimed illegal under the Soviet totalitarian regime and displacement of religious community members. Life stories of the women testify that the main strategy for survival the Roman Catholic nuns living under the Soviet totalitarian regime used was different forms of silent resistance. Under the conditions of persecution, the activity of nuns was very significant retaining the main functions of Catholic Church in Lithuania.

Metodološke pretpostavke paleografskog opisa hrvatske liturgijske glagoljice XIV. i XV. stoljeća

Metodološke pretpostavke paleografskog opisa hrvatske liturgijske glagoljice XIV. i XV. stoljeća

Author(s): Mateo Žagar / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2016

The fourteenth and fifteenth century are often referred to as ‘the golden age’ of Croatian Glagolitism, due to rich, highly reputable and functionally diverse written production, developed in stable material conditions under the influence of the contact Latin minuscule writing. The defined palaeographic description of the dynamic creation of liturgical minuscule in the thirteenth century demanded further methodological advance: following the adaptation of older majuscule lettering form to the four-lined (minuscule) practice and the formation of a lettering model typical for the angular Glagolitic script – a rectangle divided into six equal parts ( ) – the script dynamics (reduced as it may have been) moved to other, more irrelevant and less visible areas. Therefore, it will be interesting to observe the adherence to the inherited lettering model of that time, possible changes in the lettering inventory, and the extent of the Latin writing influence as well as the presence of peculiarities characteristic for the restricted time period or certain regions (scriptoria and even notaries). Our attention will be predominantly directed towards The first Beram (Ljubljana) breviary, copied for the Beram church in mid-Istria on the end of the 14th century. The extensive five-year long research will be done within the project by The Scientific Centre of Excellence for Croatian Glagolitism. We will use that opportunity to present a detailed strategy of palaeographic approach to a monument from the so-called ‘stable times’, when the premises for defining the final solutions in Glagolitic print were established (since the 1483 editio princeps ). In the period that followed, we can only trace the typographic changes in liturgical books (‘angular Glagolitic script’ area). From the sixteenth century onwards, the handwriting creativity of our Glagolites was reduced to the texts of more liberal graphic practice - written in Glagolitic semi-angular script or cursive script.

Usłyszeć krzyk zza klasztornej furty

Author(s): Tomasz Krzyżak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 687/2022

Niewiele wiadomo o skali wykorzystywania sióstr zakonnych. Więcej powiedzieć można o mechanizmach, które stosują sprawcy, a także o skutkach wykorzystania u osób pokrzywdzonych. Są skutki psychiczne, m.in. stres pourazowy, depresja, strach przed stygmatyzacją. A także duchowe: żal do Boga, osłabienie wiary.

Jazykový obraz cti v súčasnej slovenskej kultúre

Jazykový obraz cti v súčasnej slovenskej kultúre

Author(s): Katarína Dudová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2016

In this report we bring reconstruction of linguistic worldview of honor ‛česť’ in contemporary Slovak culture. We come out from methodology of linguistic worldview, which has ethnolinguistic character. In accord with this approach our research is based on system, questionnaire and text´s data, which we analyze and synthetize to the form of basic aspects (perspectives), on the basis of which is in current Slovak language conceptualized honor. As we can see, honor is semantic stabilized mostly as external expression of a deference to somebody. Complex of honor attributes acquired from system data is relatively poor, because it includes only aspects psychological, social and ethical. Questionnaire material extended especially ethical, psychological and social aspect with other relevant attributes and semantic perspectives. Text´s date manifest more aspects of honor (e. g. physical, religious aspects).

Author(s): Lora Nenkovska / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2015

This article aims to present the specifics in the illumination of four liturgical manuscripts, written and decorated on the territory of Romania. This topic includes only few of the manuscripts written in the Balkan workshops during the 17-th and the beginning of the 18-th century. The features of their decoration make all of them part of the group of the so-called luxury codeces. The focus of the article is a phenomenon found in the decoration system of these four manuscripts. It consist in the extending of the function of the initial letter which adds new connotations to its initial meaning. The initial letter in the given manuscripts works as a decorative element strongly related with the meaning of the liturgical text that begins with it. This process took place in the Principality of Wallachia and was a result of the work of two Greek clerics on the territory of the Romanian principality – metropolitan Matei from Mira and bishop Luca from Buzău both of them were and skilled illuminators and authors of text, who left several well prepared dicipals who continued to work in principality of Wallachia and Moldavia.

MRAT E SHQIPTARËVE GJATË SHEKUJVE XIII-XVI

Author(s): Genc Prelvukaj / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 51/2021

This paper is concerned with the exploration of the names used within the ethnic Albanian community in the period between the XIIIXVI centuries, which appeared in the old documents and especially the population and property registers. Firstly, within the volume is explained the type and scope of authentic names, where most of them have no local character but were encountered almost throughout the territory populated by Albanians. Discussing Christian names is part of this paper as well. Names of this nature are divided into two groups: of the same form as other Balkan people whereas the second group involves those that were treated by Albanian language, which did not occur as such in the culture of other surrounding ethnic communities. Furthermore, the last two chapters explore the names of Ottoman-Islamic nature, the practice of which began with the stabilization of the Ottoman authorities after the occupation, and with the female names found throughout the research.

1866 Girit İsyanı ve Giritli Aileler Meselesi

Author(s): Hayrettin Pinar / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 19/2022

The Uprising of Crete in 1866 was one of the most important topics of the imperial political agenda for three years. During the Uprising of 1866 the Ottoman statesmen acted carefully to prevent the European intervention like in all problems of the 19th century. Especially the European intervention was enacted upon the Christian population through the 19th century and the Ottoman statesmen never desired the repetition of the same story. European states were very interested in Orthodox population of the island who had to migrate from the island because of the lack of security. Both the Sublime Porte and the Foreign Ministry followed very cereful policies to provide the coming back of the Christian population who had migrated to Greece. That is to say the Ottoman statesmen tried to show kindnes of the state and to prevent the European intervention which was promulgated under the paranthesis of humanitarian intervention.

SCHIMBĂRI ÎN MENTALITATEA RITUALULUI DE ÎNMORMÂNTARE ÎN SECOLELE VII-XI P. CHR.

Author(s): Ingrid Petcu-Levei / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2021

The Christianization of the population from Dobrogea was a long and quite difficult process. Of course, with the adoption of the new religion, funeral behavior underwent a significant change, coordinated by symbolism and by the teachings of Holly Scripture. Researchers' attention is still focused on aspects of specific Christian burial rites and rituals, namely the way in which the transition from cremation to burial was made, the way in which a series of pagan funeral practices were taken over and the stages of the process of replacing ancient rituals with those of the new religions. Overall, it is possible to make a man renounce his own beliefs in order to be integrated into society and in the sacred space, but you cannot make him forget his ethnic origin and the customs worn by generations, and so, some pagan customs have been metamorphosed into rituals. Christian.

FRANZ XAVIER WAGENSCHÖN PICTOR VIENENSIS, AUSTRIAE DISCIPULIS, P. P. RUBENIUS

FRANZ XAVIER WAGENSCHÖN PICTOR VIENENSIS, AUSTRIAE DISCIPULIS, P. P. RUBENIUS

Author(s): Mihaela Vlăsceanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2021

The study analises from a comparative perspective the creation of one of the leading representatives of Baroque painting of central – Europe, a Viennese Academy descendant Franz Xaver Wagenschön, in whose creation analogies of Peter Paul Rubens, Michelangelo Merisi da Carravagio, Michelangelo Unterberger, Franz Anton Maulbertsch and Paul Troger can be identified. Pictor Vienensis, Austriae Discipulis, P.P. Rubenius is the identity consecrated by the painter himself when signing his works. This identity is investigated through a series of votive altar paintings commisioned by the Catholic mendicant orders (mostly by the Franciscans) for the churches they erected in urban and rural centres of eighteenth century Banat. As one may observe from the interpretation, Rubens had the greatest influence on Wagenschön, from style to manner and media used, to iconography of apotropaic saints depicted with Baroque scenery and neoclassical vocabulary. This mixture of influences can be attributed to the situation found in the Banat province after the middle of the 1700s, when echoes of the Enlightnement movement penetrated all fields and became a true state policy and when Wagenschön’s creation reached its climax. He decorated altars for the Jesuit church of St. George in Timișoara (St. Ignatius of Loyolla and Alois), votive painting of the main altar of Theresiopol Roman-Catholic church (Vinga, Arad county), main altar votive painting of the Oravița (Caraș county) and side altar painting of the Franciscan monastery of Maria Radna in Lipova. Compositional and chromatic influences, full assimilation of the baroque naturalism from his masters are to be found throughout his entire carieer, in a period when the Catholic church regaines its prestige and becomes the most important recipient of religious works of art.

Secularizarea concepției despre moarte în secolele XIX–XX

Secularizarea concepției despre moarte în secolele XIX–XX

Author(s): Simona Nicoară / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2022

The secularization of the concept of death is considered a triumph of the secularization and de-Christianization of European societies. The phenomenon of secularization has changed the mentalities and traditions of the peoples of Europe, the legislation, the way of understanding family, love, sexuality, but especially the relationship to death and eternity. The study proposes a brief analysis that connects the history of conceptions and attitudes toward death — and funeral practices in nineteenth — and twentieth-century Europe — to the discussion of de-Christianization and secularization. A secularization that has not been a marginal phenomenon but has fully touched the heart of modern civilization in the last two centuries. In general, research into the phenomenon of death and burial offers historians rich perspectives on secularization. Secularized conceptions of death have given rise to a huge interest in the phenomenon of death and the status of the body after death. Once secular forces managed to break the church’s monopoly on death and burial, a market for funerals and a culture of death were gradually created, with strictly cultural, political, and economic effects. In the absence of moral and ethical guidelines, secular ideologies have established an equivalence between corpse and waste. The vision of death and the recycling of dead human bodies is also found in the realm of the great contemporary dystopias.
