№219. The Bosnian Hiatus: A Story of Misinterpretations

Author(s): Goran Tirak / Language(s): English

After seven years of debate, the decision to close the office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (OHR), an international body overseeing the peace implementation in Bosnia, has not yet been implemented. Bosnia is a potential EU candidate, but the majority of member states do not consider Bosnia capable of negotiating membership with the Union while the OHR remains the supreme authority governing the country. However, there was never enough political will on the part of any of the actors to bring about closure of the OHR.

Author(s): Lev Rubinstein / Language(s): Serbian

I to nanajvišem nivou.

Svi k’o jedan, jednom dušom, ujedan glas? Da li je tako? Kasno nedeljno popodne na ulici Tverskoj, kafići rasuti pod visokim kamenim postoljem spomenika našem ocu-osnivaču, a za masivnim sapima bronzanog konja kojeg on jaše svetluca i zveči nekakva multikulturna, letnja tra-la-la estrada. Mnogo šetača, raznih po uzrastu i vrsti, Moskovljani i gosti naše prestonice, skockani pomalo buržujski, onako više po zapadnom ukusu, demokratski. Odličan uzorak!

Putinove partije

Author(s): Végel László / Language(s): Serbian

Zaprepašćenost ne jenjava. Čak su i najveći licemeri, najveći pretvornici skandalizovani. Deo inteligencije iskreno negoduje zbog prodora ekstremne desnice u evropski parlament. Drugi deo se pakosno krevelji, i daje izjave o sumraku evropskog jedinstva. Partije se, pak, međusobno optužuju. Budemo li nastavili tim putem, Evropa će postati žrtva partijskih čarki i partijskih vojnika.

Author(s): Yulia Latynina / Language(s): Serbian

Revolucija – prekomplikovano

Author(s): Georg Diez / Language(s): Serbian

Author(s): Uwe Klußmann / Language(s): Serbian

European Voices in the Western Balkans: A Liberal Perspective on Enlargement of the European Union

European Voices in the Western Balkans: A Liberal Perspective on Enlargement of the European Union

Author(s): Natan Albahari,Martin Apostolski,Damir Arnaut,Ivan Dragojević,Sanela Klarić,Aris Movsesijan / Language(s): English

A simple glance at a map of Europe is enough to see why a joint European future for all European countries is inevitable and that it would be a logical interest of the European Union do spread its borders across the Western Balkans and further strengthen its position in the region. Still, keeping talks of enlargement alive is getting more and more difficult every year. Even before the pandemic, the opinion that it is necessary to reform the accession criteria before any new enlargement talks should begin has emerged, which has temporarily suspended candidacy talks with Albania and North Macedonia at one point, and almost caused serious backsliding in the latter Western Balkan country. Although the European Union is still mostly engaged in fighting the COVID-19 outbreak, preparing itself for the post-pandemic crises, and trying to make internal reforms in order to tackle existing and possible future problems in member states, talks on enlargement should not halt. And the two priorities – the one on the internal and the one on external strengthening of the European Union – must not be considered mutually exclusive, because they both benefit the geopolitical position of Europe.

Perspectives on U. S.-Albanian Relations

Author(s): Nikola PANO / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In his book Diplomacia amerikane dhe Shqiperia Leonard Demi observes, “The ties between Albanians and America do not begin on the date of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and the United States of America, but long before that time, around the end of the 19th century.” (p. 9) Although Demi is referring specifically in his observation to the arrival in 1892 of the first group of Albanian immigrants who settled permanently in the United States, it is also true that a small, but growing number of Americans had during the 19th century become aware of the existence of the Albanian people and their national hero, Skenderbeg.

Realpolitik of Indo-Nepal Relations

Realpolitik of Indo-Nepal Relations

Author(s): Sunil Thapa / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Substantial political and economic exchanges have marked the historical relationship between Nepal and India. They maintain their diplomatic relations through high-level visits, trade initiatives, and financial investments. Moreover, India has assisted Nepal in the domain of infrastructure development but is motivated by geopolitical considerations and preferences. The Treaty of Segouli, concluded in 1816 between the Kingdom of Nepal and British India, led to Nepal's relinquishment of a substantial territorial expansion. This began the emergence of realpolitik in Nepal, which facilitated foreign intervention in the country's political affairs. India has exerted a significant hegemonic influence on Nepal's internal and external affairs since its independence from British rule in 1947. This influence has been particularly evident since establishing the 'Peace and Friendship Treaty' between India and Nepal in 1950. India has played an active role in Nepal's political movements, introduced the concept of a common river, and imposed its desires and interests through river water agreements. Additionally, India has infringed upon Nepalese territories and utilized Nepalese political parties and their leaders to create a political-economic environment in Nepal that benefits India. Furthermore, India has a covert presence in selecting Prime Ministers in Nepal. Therefore, these factors collectively suggest that India's influence and domination infringe upon Nepal's sovereignty and independence.
