Църквата „Св. Успение Богородично” в Арбанаси – проучване и реставрация на стенописите

Author(s): Aglika Ikonomova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2010

The article presents the results of the study and restoration of the murals in the naos and narthex of the Church of the Assumption in Arbanasi. A comparison is made between the techniques of painting in these premises and in the chapel of the Holy Trinity. But the study and restoration of the church shed light not only on the technology of building and painting but also on its history. The observations offer a possibility to present a well-grounded thesis regarding the three con- struction periods of the temple. Initially the building covered the present naos and it is possible that there was an outside narthex. This was an building covered by a semicylindrical vault and with two conchs which were within the thickness of the walls. Later, in the 17th c. the narthex was added. Data shows that possibly the height of the church was raised. This might be the reason for the two premises to be painted anew. Finally, in 1704 the chapel was built which can be proved by the joint on the western side of the façade between the old narthex and the narthex of the chapel. In a future restoration of the altar space and the chapel some new evi- dence about the construction history of the temple might be discovered.

Църковният закон на патриарх Василий в Архивския номоканон (ЦИАИ 1160)

Църковният закон на патриарх Василий в Архивския номоканон (ЦИАИ 1160)

Author(s): Ancho Kaloyanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2015

The Arhivski Nomocanon (Church History and Archives Institute 1160) is end of the 14th century copy of the Penitential Nomocanon of the Bulgarian church. Its initial composition originated in 913 from translated and domestic legal documents and later new texts were added, among which we identify Patriarch Vasilii’s Ecclesiastical law. In the Law the total number of rules is 117, united thematically in 9 groups, of which the first two are meaningful: the first is about the hierarchy in the autocephalous Church headed by a Patriarch, the second establishes the priority of the ecclesiastical court over the tsar’s court, sign of the uniat with Rome (1204–1232) at the time of Patriarch Vasilii’s rule.

Църковнонационални борби в София до отхвърляне властта на Цариградската патриаршия

Author(s): Antoaneta Kirilova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

Based on published and newly discovered unpublished sources, as well as the existing historical research on the topic, the author reconstructs the church-national struggle in Sofia in the years after the end of the Crimean War (1856). The events in Sofia are discussed in the context of the national struggle for an independent Bulgarian church and in comparison with the similar activities in Plovdiv at the same time. Two main moments in the church movement in Sofia attract the attention and form the cores around which the source material is focused: the reaction in the city after the secession from the Patriarchate of Constantinople on 3 April 1860 in the Bulgarian church „St. Stefan“ in Constantinople – two months later Sofia’s Bulgarians also renounced the Patriarchate and reinforced this with relevant changes in the municipal self-government; the dramatic events in Sofia in 1861 when the citizens of Sofia defended their previously stated position on the church issue by refusing to accept the patriarchal bishop – Bulgarian Dorotheos.

The edition of Bratoeva-Darakchieva, Ingeborg; Genova, Irina; Levi, Claire; Spassova-Dikova, Joanna; Stoilova-Doncheva, Teodora; Tasheva, Stela; Traykova, Elka. Bulgarian 20th Century in Arts and Culture. Institute of Art Studies, 2019, ISBN: 978-954-8594-77-6, 632 рр. 333 ill. http://artstudies.bg/books/BG_XX_EN_2019_IIIzk.pdf in Bulgarian and in English in two separate books comes as a result of a collaborative interdisciplinary project supported by the National Science Fund, Bulgaria, which aims to present a general view on the history of arts in Bulgaria during the 20th century. There are specific but also general, parallel intellectual and artistic processes observed in the field of literature, theatre, music, cinema, visual arts and architecture. The accent is put on phenomena related to the modernization of Bulgarian culture and its place in the context of the flexible, dynamic cultural dimensions of modern Europe. The texts are structured in three parts: Under the Sign of Modern Europe (1878–1944), Metamorphoses of Modernity (1945–1989), Challenges in a Time of Transition (1989–2000). Splitting the period into topical parts creates convenience of sharpening the accents related to various “aspects of change” in the development of a particular art and its specific reflections from the point of view of personal and community identity analysed in synchronous or diachronous terms. The marking of such cross nodes (temporal, socio-cultural, institutional, genric, etc.) by following mosaic-chronological principle is conventional and provocative to the traditional idea concerning developmental trends in Bulgarian culture of the past century. The publication is richly illustrated and has an extensive bibliography. It is intended for a wide range of readers. It is evaluated as excellent edition by the National Science Fund, Bulgaria.

Чавдар Мутафов и естетическото влияние на немския модернизъм

Author(s): Alexandra Antonova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2009

Munich is the place where Chavdar Mutafov has matured, the town, where he returned twice - to complete his study, tragically interrupted by the wars, the town, which challenged by deprivation his love to the master of history novel - Fany Popova-Mutafova, and finally, this is the place where his son - Dobry - was born. Yet another fact, in 1923 the Mutafov family met a true impressive colony of Bulgarian artists in Munich - poets, writers, architects, musicians. Together with the subjects of machine engineering and art of architecture which Mutafov studied, he got to know thoroughly the history and theory of painting, admired the innovative synthetic cinematography art, which influenced strongly his manner of work. The present article "restores" the vital relationship between Mutafov and Munich through Mutafov's letters and aims to reveal the creative influence which the European capital of arts has exerted on the works by the Bulgarian modernist. During the first period of stay – from 1908 to 1912 - Mutafov still found the climax and witnessed the end of the Munich Secession. He was at Munich when the second group of German expressionism - "Der Blaue Ritter" - was established. As he wrote "all famous and unknown authors of the Munich satirical and humorous "Simplicissimus" and "Jugend" magazines had been my teachers - all these masters of mockery and style tricks". During his second stay - from 1922 to 1925 - Mutafov witnessed further development of expressionism, part of which was the fraction "Neue Sachlichkeit" (the "new materiality"). Contemporary critics are inclined to think that it is Bauhaus' "new materiality" which has influenced Mutafov's manner of neorealistic expression in his short stories from the 30 s of the last century. Munich, in this sense, is the place which has created this unconventional modernist, the philosopher, who, being sensitive to the newest in art, has written magnificent essays and art critic studies with the significance of a manifest for Bulgarian culture between the World Wars.

Author(s): Petar Namichev,Ekaterina Namicheva Todorovska / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 5/2018

The loggia represents dominant functional and important element in the spatial conception of the 19th century town houses in Shtip. At the same time, the position of the loggia balcony has a central place in the organization of the living space, which connects the other rooms (the rooms, the kitchen) in one entity. The form of the space is placed in the middle of the house plan, in the sideways position of the base, in the whole depth of the house or in an irregular shape, adapted to the function of the space. While shaping the loggia, structural features of building are applied, the spacious elements of built-in and movable furniture, decorative doors, windows, fences of the stairs, the ceiling, etc. In this way, the local and indigenous characteristics of the balcony loggia in the city house from Shtip are reflected. The significance and influence of the loggia balcony in the organization of the house led to the formation of a type of house “chardakliya” which was characteristic for the settlements of the wider region of the Balkans.

Чарльз Сун: из истории старшего поколения знаменитой китайской семьи (конец XIX – начало XX в.)

Author(s): L.S. Veselova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2016

The story of a powerful Chinese family of the late 19th – early 20th centuries began from Charles Soong. He was one of the first Chinese who had an opportunity to receive education abroad and achieved success in business. Having lived in the United States for about 10 years as an emigrant from China (huaqiao) and taken up the Western mentality, Ch. Soong always remained faithful to his homeland. For this reason, he tried to ensure that his children, who studied at the best universities in the United States, would return to China. The members of the Soong family played a leading role in the economic and political history of China: his son, Soong Tse-ven, was a successful businessman and held the most important public positions; his three daughters – Ai-ling, Ching-ling, and Mei-ling – became the most influential women in China. Ch. Soong strived to unite the East and the West. His biography is of interest for studying the role of large families and clans in the political, economic, and cultural life of China during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Чашата на причастието. Към семантиката на съдовете от благороден метал в орфическата ритуална среда на тракийската аристокрация

Author(s): Michaela Yordanova / Language(s): English,Greek, Ancient (to 1453),Bulgarian Issue: 25/2020

The exposition analyzes the semantics of Thracian vessels of precious metal; an attempt was made to discuss their function in the context of sacred mysterious logos; a reinterpretation of the ritual symposial practices characteristic of the Orphic communities of Thracian political elites is proposed. Precisely because of their sacred functions, vessels of precious metal with inscriptions are found in the funerals and treasures of the aristocratic elite. They function in a certain way in the symposium rituals during the ruler’s symposia, and such practices in Thrace, are part of the Orphic religion and are associated with aristocratic political elites. There are several reasons for this topic: There is discussion in the literature and there is still a lack of a systematic and consistent thesis about the function of precious metal vessels in the Thracian cultural model. Despite the fundamental research of Al. Foul, the connection between the Thracian basic model of Orphism as aristocratic ideology and its projections in artifacts and folk narratives has not yet been sought. No effort was made to illuminate the function of the Thracian sacral artifacts in parallel with the Greek orphic sources.
