Nowadays, when for many prayer does not make any sense, the author attempts at showing what prayer is, taking into account an understanding of human person, especially that provided by Karol Wojtyła, Rmano Guardini and Richard Schaeffler. Human person, while enjoying absolute, intrinsic dignity, is at the same time related to another person. Its structure is dialogical. Its source is God who creates it by calling it as his “you”. In this calling human person, in turn, recognizes God as their “You” and may call His Name.

The main aim of this article is to analyze the phenomenon of secularization in the writings of Rainer Maria Rilke and Gianni Vattimo and to offer a profound reinterpretation of the ethics of charity, as built on the foundations of religion. In recent years there has been a breakdown of the secularization paradigm. It turned out that modernity and contemporary technological revolution do not necessarily lead to the inevitable death of religion. Many contemporary scientists tell us about the process of desecularization and the return of religion in a modified form. The deepest meaning of secularization does not concern the presence of religion in the public domain, but the reinterpretation of religious truths and symbols. In this regard the main problem is to establish a new form of religion, entirely immanent and humanistic. These very complex phenomena of secularization and desecularization require extensive interdisciplinary research.

The author reveals the following sequence in the formation of the Jewish doctrine of the bodily resurrection of the dead: during the Babylonian captivity of the Judaeans, a naturalistic allegory of their revival upon their expected return to their Motherland arises (Ezek. 37:1–14, Isa. 26:19, 41:14); by the end of the period of exile / at the very beginning of the Persian period, the personified image of the people’s rising from the dead is developing (the allegory of the Servant of the Lord in Isa. 42:1–9, 49: 1–7, 50:4–9, 52:13–53:12; perhaps also the image of Job, cf. especially: Job 19:25–27a and 42:5, 7–17). In the time of another national catastrophe – the persecution of the faithful Jews under Antiochus IV Epiphanes – the concept of an individual eschatological resurrection in the flesh arises; at this receiving of the afterlife requital is assumed to be realized in the body (Dan. 12:1b–3, 13).

The article is a comparative analysis of the philosophical and anthropological ideas inherent to Christianity and Islam. The researcher considers Christianity and Islam as cultural traditions sharing specific features since the early Middle Ages. The author argues that their philosophical conceptions of the human being’s relation to God brings these religions much closer together. On the basis of texts of the Greek-Byzantine Church Fathers, the article traces the formation of such fundamental ideas as human freedom and Divine predestination, deification and achievement of spiritual freedom, in particular, through the Uncreated Light. The author compares the concepts of Eastern Christian Church Fathers mostly with the postulates of the traditional theology of Islam (Kalam).

The article deals with the early Christian literature of the 2nd–3rd centuries in the context of the Second Sophistic. Famous sophists and Christian intellectuals were contemporaries, and they were educated by the same teachers. The focus of the article is on such themes as the claims of apologists for the status of ambassadors to the Roman emperors, the desire to demonstrate their education and include Christianity in the mainstream of development of ancient culture, an appeal to Greek history. When Christians tried to prove the truth of their views on the world and the deity and to demon-strate the superiority of their culture and their own tradition, they often used ideas and methods borrowed from the arsenal of Second sophistic.

Thomas Aquinas is known for his five arguments for God's existence, and of these "Five Ways", the third one is known as the argument from contingency, wherein the necessity of a necessary being is demonstrated. We submit this "Third Way" to argumentational analysis, which uncovers the existence of two distinct interpretations of this argument of reduction to absurdity. The interpretation based on finding a contradiction with experiential facts is shown as inadequate due to having its conclusions based on problematic observation selection effects. The interpretation based on finding a contradiction with a priori truths is shown as insufficient, as it does not posess the required a priori content. As a solution to these objections, we propose a new interpretation, one where the "Third Way" argument is regarded in conjunction with the "Second Way" argument, which then supplies the required a priori content needed for establishing a contradiction, all the while avoiding the pitfalls of observation selection effects. The proposed solution can be subjected to further evaluation and critique.

The first part of the paper briefly presents the biography of the theologian, sufi and muderris (Professor) Selim Sami Jašar from Vučitrn (Kosovo). Although he is the author of several works in the field of theology, in this paper we have reflected on his allegorical tale Conversation with the Magpie, which was translated into our language by Professor Fejzulah Hadžibajrić. In this tale, in the form of a dialogue, a Dervish (in this case author Selim Sami Jašar himself) talks with a magpie, primarily about the topics of taṣawwuf (sufism) and Islamic dogmatics ('Aqā'id), but also about the topics belonging to the field of theology of moral ('Ilm al-Ahlāq). Particular attention is drawn to the presentation of the symbolism of the animal world, bios, whose essence is examined from the mentioned perspectives. Among other things, the paper emphasizes the historical context of this symbolical tale because it was written in the first half of the twentieth century when not too much attention was given in the West to the zooethical and fitoethical issues.

Martin Buber is a well-known representative of dialogical philosophy who wrote extensively on the topic of religion. He developed his own philosophy of religion and engaged in polemics with other philosophers of religion on the importance of dialogical elements in this field of study. In this paper I examine his complex polemic with Søren Kierkegaard which is part of Buber’s larger project of developing dialogical philosophy of religion. Buber’s approach to Kierkegaard is ambivalent: on the one hand he considers Kierkegaard a precursor to dialogical philosophy, on the other hand he claims that Kierkegaard compromises basic Christian doctrines. Buber adopts dialogical notions elaborated by Kierkegaard and develops them further while rejecting those notions that he deems incompatible with the dialogical approach. The philosophical-religious issue of the individual’s relation to God is at the center of Buber’s polemic.

In this article, the author analyzes the images of the destruction of the Kingdom of Judah and the suffering of its inhabitants during the Babylonian invasions of the 6th century BCE as they have been described by the editors of the Book of Lamentations. The author discusses the successive stages of the destruction (land—city—Temple) and of the suffering (ordinary people—nobles— children). In the concluding section, some theological refl ections inspired by the book are presented. Among them, a prominent place belongs to the issue of hope that sprouts up in the ruins of the desolated city.

The purpose of this paper is to explain the soteriology of the Paschal events in the context of the Divine Mercy. This interpretation, proposed by John Paul II, is a new input in the fi eld of dogmatic theology in Catholicism. A creative comparison of the attribute of mercy with the mysteries of the salvific events of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has contributed to the development of major soteriological categories, understood as the fruits of the Paschal Mystery. Within the framework of traditional notions of redemption, justifi cation, and salvation, the author analyzes chosen issues of the theology advanced by John Paul II. When it comes to the category of redemption, they include: mercy as love conquering sin, mercy as victory over death, and mercy as reconciliation with the Father. As far as the category of justifi cation is concerned, the following notions have been analyzed: love versus justice, the merit of justifi cation, doing justice to the love of the Father. With respect to the mercy of salvation, the following issues have been reviewed: the covenant with the whole of mankind, the gift of a new creation, and anticipation of “a new heaven and a new earth.”

There are two basic approaches to the experience of time. It is conceived either as a power which gradually destroys a human life or as duration which resists change and death. The focus of the article is the latter model, which allows experiencing moments of eternity within the experience of a sustained continuation of one’s own being. While hoping for a particular good (or expecting it), the human being already possesses it in some form and, in this way, hope (or expectation) turns out to be an actuation of the future, which, although is yet to come, is already experienced as real and actually present. Among other moments of eternity in an earthly life, despite their negative nature, are those of physical pain, psychological suffering, and despair. Experiencing them, a human being feels that time is standing still and life has changed into an eternal hell which is impossible to overcome. The model moments of eternity which have been described in the article are manifestations of the only form of eternal life accessible to a human being in earthly life. However, they may also become starting points for constructing either philosophical or theological models of eternal life after death.

Is it possible to learn to hope? One might perhaps find the answer to this question by looking at the lives of those who, in the face of adversity, manage to ‘move on,’ enjoy life, and, simply, be happy. Research shows that such people have faith in themselves, adopt a proactive attitude, and persevere despite failures. Charles R. Snyder, a precursor of positive psychology, suggests that there is another characteristic they share: that of hope. According to Snyder, hope is not an emotion, but a specific mode of thinking, and involves positive energy focused on reaching the set goal.

This paper discusses the issue of the sense of faith (sensus fidei) in the life of the Church. The author first describes the contemporary social context in which discussing the sensus fidei is meaningful. He then presents the nature of the sensus fidei and evaluates some major definitions of this concept. Emphasis is placed upon the biblical teaching on this spiritual gift and the milestones in the development of this idea. The author examines the manifestations of the sensus fidei in the personal life of the believer and in the communal life of the Church. He shows the living connection between the sensus fidei and the Magisterium Ecclesiae. The author concludes with his reflection on the dispositions needed by all believers for authentic participation in the sensus fidei. Ecumenical aspects of the sensus fidei still remain an important topic for Christian theologians. The relationship between the sensus fidei and public or majority opinion is a very delicate question. For that reason, the magisterium and theologians must constantly work to constitute the clear criteria for discernment of the authentic sensus fidei.
