Iron Curtain in Reality and Mentality – Border Crossings in Hungarian Films after the Change of the Regime

Iron Curtain in Reality and Mentality – Border Crossings in Hungarian Films after the Change of the Regime

Author(s): Miklós Sághy / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

During the cold war, Eastern and Western Europe were separated by the so-called Iron Curtain. From the Soviet Empire controlled Eastern Block, the Western countries seemed to be the land of freedom and wealth. Even if the official communist propaganda tried to refute this idea, its materialization is to be witnessed in several Hungarian films made during the 1980s. The democratic transformation that followed the fall of the Iron Curtain seemingly opened the Western world for people from Eastern Europe. Many Hungarian films, made in the 1990s and 2000s, depict the experience of Hungarians in the desired Western countries after the political changes. In my paper I intend to show: 1) the travels from the East to the West after the collapse of the Iron Curtain forced Eastern protagonists to face the incongruences between the imaginary and the real West 2) the disappointment and deception these travels bring about originate in the Eastern, communist upbringing and its consequences: unethical social reflexes and behaviour. Briefly, via the analyses of several examples taken from Hungarian cinema, I would like to instantiate how deeply the former separation of the East and the West - an imaginary Iron Curtain – still existed around 2000s in the mind of Eastern people.

The Creator in Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!

The Creator in Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!

Author(s): Alexandra Roxana MĂRGINEAN / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This paper relies on Darren Aronofsky’s motion picture Mother! shown in 2017 inVenice, and shortly after in the U.S., as an allegory of the Bible and an environmentalist movie. It starts from the assumption introduced to the press following the release that the central male figure, Him (played by Javier Bardem),is the symbol of the absolute God and Creator, using Mother (the character played by Jennifer Lawrence) as the environment or space where creation can be enacted, only to progressively deconstruct it up to reversing their roles, portraying her as the divine principle and him as a secondary figure. After the Introduction that sets the scene, the second part describes the vision of the biblical parallelisms and, then, that of the movie as an alarm signal for the need to direct our attention to the damage we do to the environment. The third part looks into the incongruities between the female protagonist’s nature and qualities and considering her as subservient to Him. It uncovers the hints to an alternative interpretation, which get supported by a fallen-from-grace male creator depicted in part four. The conclusions pinpoint this subterranean interpretation of the film and sum up the arguments that have led us to it.

Henry James’s “Washington Square” The Book and the Movie(s1) – From Convergence to Portability

Author(s): Rodica-Roxana Anghel / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2018

Literature and film, the book or the movie ? In order to enjoy the story, do we have to choose one or the other? Is there a better, a more fortunate approach of the two fields – literature and film ? Which is the best or the fairest in terms of the audience, or in terms of the reader or of the film viewer, when it comes to conveying the meaning? Has literatureirrespective of support i.e. books on paper or e-books, irrespective of gender, the classical novel, literature for children, science fiction, novels that mix fiction and history, come back to life or does it sell better since so many feature films, TV series based on literature books are available via linear media services (the classical TV broadcasting programs) or on non-linear audiovisual media services television (i.e. on-demand audiovisual media services)?. Does the audiovisual – i.e. moving images and sounds under editorial responsibility of the broadcaster - sell text books better, do things happen the other way round, does it really mater which of the two plays the role of the locomotive ? Yes, it makes a world of a difference from so many points of view of the audience, as we shall see further on....Just a few examples: the Harry Potter series of fantasy novels and the film series based on the novels, the TV Turkish series broadcast round the world, Suleiman the Magnificent and the novel by André Clot or by Harold Lamb or by Erhan Afyoncu, Catch 22 by Joshph Heller and the movie, a 1970 American black comedy war film adapted from the same name novel, the Agatha Christie famous detective novels and films based on these novels with great detectives Hercule Poirot and Ms. Marple. Learning by Seeing: The Art of Anatomic Illustration

Author(s): Roxana Elena Doncu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2017

Although medical illustrations are generally understood as visual models for the transmission of knowledge, the history of anatomical illustration brings to light all the interconnections and interrelations that have worked to establish its status as an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the human body. By using aesthetics as a didactic way to knowledge, anatomical illustration merged scientific with aesthetic theories, developing specific ‘period’ styles. From the early demonstrations of Leonardo da Vinci to modern schools of medical illustration, the history of this interdisciplinary enterprise shows a remarkable capacity of changing with the advent of new paradigms in science.

Rethinking Star System in the Age of the Platform

Author(s): János Tóth I. / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

In my study, I examine the shift in celebrity identity as a result of platformization. In this way, the research updates the foundational positions and claims of star studies before the era of digitization. The investigation focuses on four key perspectives. Firstly, it explores the consequences of the filter bubbles phenomenon in relation to the recognition of classic Hollywood film stars. The second perspective addresses the competition between new star types emerging from platformization and the old-fashioned stars, also delving into how social media alters the perception of public persona. The new presentation opportunities of celebrity identity influence viewer identification and interaction modes. The third chapter discusses the ontological uncertainty of celebrity identity in the context of the standardization of virtual stars and deaging procedures. The fourth aspect of platformization, also addressed in the study, examines how the curatorial perspective of streaming platforms influences the perception of celebrities through the positioning of content.

This article aims to give the reader the most general information about the origins of the drawing and its development throughout the different ages to the Renaissance. It marks in essence the stages and directions of this development. It is multi-directional and varied, primarily influenced by the philosophy and ideology of the time - from prehistoric drawings not subject to any scientific norms, passing through a canon in Egypt, later on in Byzantium and a drawing using the laws of nature, first in Greece and deeper in the Renaissance. The directions of development in the periods concerned have preserved their importance and influence over time, building on them different styles, trends and movements in the drawing. This search and interpretation process continues to this day.

Arhitektura i Sufizam - spoj duhovnosti, simbolizma, estetike i praktičnosti

Author(s): Naida Ademović / Language(s): Belarusian Issue: 65-68/2024

Tekkes represent a deep fusion of architecture and Sufism, where each structure bears the imprint of spiritual practice. Architecture serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds, allowing us to experience a connection with the divine. Sufism emphasizes inner enlightenment and closeness to God through the space of the tekke, which is both aesthetically appealing and deeply spiritually inspiring. Tekkes, with their unique L-shaped room arrangements, provide ideal environments for the spiritual growth of Sufi practitioners. These buildings functionally separate different activities, enabling both privacy and community. Symbolically, the L-shape reflects the Sufi spiritual journey and the hierarchical structure of the community. Over the centuries, tekkes have evolved by incorporating cultural influences while maintaining their connection to the spiritual values of Sufism. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, these structures are an important part of the cultural identity, integrating Ottoman and local elements. The location of tekkes is often in natural settings, emphasizing the connection with nature. Tekkes continue to play an important role in social and spiritual life, serving as places of spiritual gathering, education, and cultural exchange. Their architecture not only reminds us of the past but also inspires us to appreciate cultural heritage and nurture spiritual roots. In conclusion, tekkes in Bosnia and Herzegovina bear witness to a rich cultural heritage, creating spaces that bridge the physical and spiritual through symbolic elements and ecologically sustainable design.

„Wrocław, to żałosne miasto sztuki”. Komunikat na temat „Kroniki” Josepha Langera (1865–1918)

„Wrocław, to żałosne miasto sztuki”. Komunikat na temat „Kroniki” Josepha Langera (1865–1918)

Author(s): Adam Organisty / Language(s): Polish Issue: 24/2024

The Chronicle by Joseph Langer (1865–1918), a painter, noted conservator, and collector from Ziębice in Lower Silesia, was officially made available to the local authorities of this city in the form of photographic documentation in 2019. When I was writing my doctoral dissertation on Langer, which was reviewed by Professor Marek Zgórniak, the existence of the Chronicle was known, but efforts to locate the document were unsuccessful at that time. Today, the Chronicle not only provides insight into Langer’s “life and work” but reveals his personality as well. Written by the artist from 1895 until his death, it also covers earlier years. This report announces the existence of this valuable document and analyses the stylistic form of the text in the context of other similar written accounts. The Chronicle allows us to discover previously unknown sites of Langer’s works. It provides information on the terms of contracts between him and his clients, painting techniques and stages of his work, and the relationships within the Silesian artistic community, including the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Wrocław. From reading the Chronicle, a picture emerges of a hardworking man suffering from depression, who had to cope with the behavioural norms prevalent in Wilhelmine society.

Współczesny brytyjski film o Wielkiej Wojnie i strategie wywoływania emocji u widza

Współczesny brytyjski film o Wielkiej Wojnie i strategie wywoływania emocji u widza

Author(s): Weronika Hanna Kulczewska-Rastaszańska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2024

The following text examines the role of emotion and the way it is created in contemporary British historical films about the Great War. Themes, emotions and characters are pivotal in fictional storytelling, and cinematic depiction of historical events is no exception to this. The First World War has made a significant impact on British memory, and this military conflict has been frequently presented in literature, art, theatre, and film. In this paper the author outlines the fundamental challenges associated with the analysis of emotions in film, and then go on to examine specific examples. The following films and TV series were taken into consideration: Private Peaceful (2012, dir. Pat O’Connor), Birdsong (2012, dir. Philip Martin), The Passing Bells (2014, dir. Brendan Maher), Testament of Youth (2014, dir. James Kent), Journey’s End (2017, dir. Saul Dibb) and 1917 (2019, dir. Sam Mendes). The author analyses how, in those movies, the theme of love was interwoven in the cinematic discourse about the war, how the process of identification-projection affects the viewer’s perception of the characters, and what technical nuances (shots, angles, sounds) are frequently being used by filmmakers to achieve particular emotional effect or mood.

O franciszkańskiej historii koszalińskich kościołów w latach 1945–1974

O franciszkańskiej historii koszalińskich kościołów w latach 1945–1974

Author(s): Krystyna Bastowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 12/2024

At the beginning of 1945, there were 10 temples belonging to various denominations in Koszalin, including one Catholic church. Saint Joseph. All temples survived the war conflagration. The first Franciscan, Father Nikodem Szałankiewicz, arrived in ruined Koszalin on May 26, 1945, together with a group of 450 settlers from Gniezno, occupying the church dedicated to the Saint Joseph without any obstacles, and from June 17, 1945 also the parish church. Parish of St. Joseph initially included over 20 branch churches. In 1946, the parish of St. Joseph was handed over to Lutherhaus. All efforts to acquire the castle church and other churches in Koszalin and the Koszalin district were rejected by the state authorities. In addition to building religious life and pastoral service from scratch, the Franciscans had been renovating and taking care of historic churches and their furnishings for nearly 30 years, without being able to obtain financial assistance and struggling with many difficulties from the authorities. The wide-ranging and innovative work carried out at the parish church was a response to the needs of the time and an image of the emerging conservation doctrines. Passing on to future generations the historic legacy in the form of 10 former Catholic churches and 78 Protestant congregations from the city of Koszalin and the Koszalin district is an unquestionable merit and achievement, achieved in times that were unfavorable and unfavorable to religious monuments. After the Koszalin-Kolobrzeg (Kołobrzeg) Diocese was established on June 28, 1978, the Koszalin parish church became an episcopal cathedral. On July 2, 1974, the Franciscans handed over the cathedral to the diocesan priests and on July 3, 1974, they began serving in the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which they expanded in the years 1976–1983 and where they serve to this day.

Twórczość muzyczna Arvo Pärta w świetle teologii muzyki Josepha Ratzingera/Benedykta XVI

Author(s): Ksawery Kalicki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 12/2024

The article attempts to analyze the essential features of Arvo Pärt’s music (aesthetic asceticism, primacy of the word, universal dimension) in terms of compatibility with the criteria of sacredness of music postulated by Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI (reference to the word, integration of the senses and spirit, cosmic character). The author shows that the Estonian music, at least at the level of ideological assumptions, meets these criteria.

Печатният ирмологий на XIX век – формиране, развитие и специфики в гръцката и в българската богослужебна практика

Author(s): Regina-Octavia Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2025

This article examines the evolution and key features of the printed notated heirmologion in the 19th century – one of the essential psaltic books in Eastern Orthodox liturgical practice. It compares three printed heirmologia from the patriarchal tradition of Constantinople, published by Chourmouzios Chartophylax (1825) and Ioannis Byzantios (1839, 1856), as well as a Church Slavonic heirmologion by Angel Ivanov Sevlievets (1875). The study outlines the characteristics of the first three editions, which serve as prototypes, before analyzing the modifications introduced in the fourth one. Additionally, it highlights specific melodic features of the new heirmoi that arose from the shift in language (from Greek to Church Slavonic).

Jak zbudowano wieżę Eiffla i jak chciano ją unicestwić? 1885–1900

Jak zbudowano wieżę Eiffla i jak chciano ją unicestwić? 1885–1900

Author(s): Eleonora Jedlińska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 13/2024

The aim of the competition – announced on 1 May 1886 – for the urban design of the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 was selected the most interesting project, implementing the idea of creating a central point for organizing the communication of the exhibition. The planned project was to have a special setting, as celebrating the centenary of the Great French Revolution. The intention was to build a iron tower located on the Fields of Mars/ Champs de Mars. Its creators wanted to explore the structural and engineering possibilities embodied in a building that seemed to serve the glory of the French builders of the second half of the 19th century. Gustave Eiffel presented a project made with the participation of three other engineers from his studio, which was selected for implementation. It was a iron structure in the shape of slander tower, measuring about 312 meters high. Built in less than two years, it remained the tallest building in the world for four decades. This article is primarily to the controversy that the tower aroused among French intellectuals when it was accepted by crowds of visitors. The newspaper “Le Temps” (January 1887), two years before the opening of the 1889 Exhibition, published a letter signed by the most prominent names of the French artistic and intellectual world, demanding the rejection of the tower, considering it totally incompatible with the historical architecture of Paris. Gustave Eiffel, in the same newspaper, polemicized with opponents, highlighting the beauty, nobility of form, modernity and usefulness of the already emerging construction. The most intense attempts to transform the Tower of Paris took place during the preparations for the next World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Subsequent part of the text, illustrated with documentary material, deals with attempts to demolish or rebuild the Eiffel Tower and finally preserve it in its original, as confirmed by history, perfect shape.

УМЕТНОСТ И СОЛИДАРНОСТ: ПРИМЕРИ ОД СКОПЈЕ И АТИНА

Author(s): Sofia Grigoriadou / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 24/2024

The multifaceted concept of solidarity manifests through diverse practices in different contexts. One such manifestation lies in the aftermath of the 1963 earthquake in Skopje. Amidst the Cold War, Skopje became a symbol of Yugoslav and world solidarity. I got acquainted with this concept of solidarity in the summer of 2018 at the municipal events commemorating the earthquake. Coming from Athens, I was familiar with a somewhat different one: there, in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, the impact of which would be experienced two years later, pre-existing (ant)agonistic practices of solidarity were embraced by a broader segment of society vis-a-vis severe austerity measures. Initiatives such as anti-middleman and exchange markets, as well as migrants’ and artists’ squats, proved crucial in the face of unprecedented precarity. Solidarity concurrently fostered new forms of sociality. Discussions with contemporary art practitioners in Skopje, aspiring to an idea of Europe different from the one imposed by the Skopje 2014 urban regeneration project, revealed similar, yet distinct, notions of solidarity. Self-organized and self-sustained art initiatives emerged while others sought support from private funds, all operating outside state institutions. This paper aims to comparatively examine variations of the notion of solidarity in contemporary art and in dialogue with activism in response to heterogeneous “crises” in Skopje and Athens.

Reclama la obiectele necesare în gospodărie, în presa brăileană interbelică

Author(s): Claudiu Brăileanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 22/2022

The mystery of the missing space on the second basement level in the house of D. Kenkov in Varna: Facts and assumtions

The mystery of the missing space on the second basement level in the house of D. Kenkov in Varna: Facts and assumtions

Author(s): Nadya Stamatova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This publication raises a yet unanswered question that emerged during the work of architects N. Stamatova and M. Hlebarova on the restoration of the most richly ornamented facade in the city of Varna. The house of the entrepreneur Dimitar Kenkov was built according to a project from 1912 by the great Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov. In parallel with the restoration of the facade, the design team conducted research on the interior spaces of the building, needed for the technical passport of the building. The 3D model of the building revealed unusual (hidden or illogical) spaces, as well as the absence of expected ones. The research poses a question related to the lack of such a space, expected according to Nikola Lazarov‘s original project, but not implemented in place or subsequently walled up. It is unclear whether the reasons were difficulties in carrying out excavation work related to archaeology near the antique fortification wall of Odessos (5th–6th century) or if it is associated with the change in the socioeconomic reality in Bulgaria after 1944. Further on-site research would be required to discuss this matter in depth. Upon completion of the restoration work on the facade, access to the interior spaces of the building was restricted for specialists.
