As yet the extensive academic literature on the rule of King Stanisław August Poniatowski has failed to produce a detailed monograph on the Permanent Council: the fi rstcentral, collective body with executive power in the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Past studies merely deal with selected aspects of its functions. Yet, the importanceof the Council and the role it played in the shaping of the political system of thePolish state in the last years of the 18th century require that this gap is filled. Th e sourcematerials stored in archival collections provide a broad field for research by historians of the state and law.
