This paper presents the characteristics of the Turkish suffix -luk which is realised in two ways in the Timok language, one is the rarely used (-luk) and the other is the more frequent (-lъk ). The paper also considers the suffix status in Dictionary of the Timok Dialect by Jaksa Dinic, as well as a comparative review on the condition of the lexical units, which were found in relation to the study of Prvoslav Radic and also in relation to some dialect dictionaries as well as literary language. The objective of this paper is to present the frequency of lexemes in Dinic’s Dictionary which contain the suffix –luk in their composition. The paper also considers the status of these lexemes as well as their characteristics in other dictionaries. Using a comparative method we made a review of excerpt formation, classification and analysis of the examples in relation to the formation in other dictionaries. Analysis of the corpus indicated the frequency of this Turkish origin suffix in Dictionary of the Timok Dialect. We found about fifty lexemes which contain this suffix in their formation. We also noted that there are formal and semantic differences when it comes to the realisation of these lexemes in other Serbian language dictionaries.

De cette etude que nous avons consacree ä l’analyse de la phrase complexe ä subordonnee temporelle en francais et en serbo-croate contemporains, se degage la conclusion que quand — kad est un subordonnant non-marque et depourvu d’une base temporelle autonome. Les rapports qui s’etablient entre les deux proces lies par le subordonnant quand — kad sont ceux de simultaneite et de non-simultaneite. Les nombreux examples par lesquels nous avons illustre nos demonstrations nous indiquent qu’il s’instaure une organisation du temps et de l’aspect dans la phrase complexe ä subordonnee temporelle. Les rapports temporels et aspectuels dans ce type de phrases ne se determinent pas de la meme facon en francais et en serbo-croate. L’aspect verbal en francais est de nature syntaxique: il est determine par des facteurs adjacents (oontexte de la narration), en serbo-croate ill est de nature morphologique, c’est-a-dire que le verbe lui-meme porte la valeur aspectuelle dans sa racine. Notre analyse a montre que le present en francais peut avoir l’aspect accompli dans ce type de phrases, grace ä d’autres elements du contexte.

This paper presents the results of a contrastive analysis of high (closed) vowels of English /iː, ɪ, uː, ʊ/ and Serbian /i, u/ produced by 20 native speakers, adolescents (14 – 15 years old) from South East England (Ramsgate) and North Serbia (Ruma). Both groups of participants read the lists of words containing both long and short vowels of the two languages. The acoustic analysis (Praat, Boersma & Weeninik) involved measuring the values of the first three formants (F1, F2, F3), as well as the duration of the stressed vowels, which were then statistically analysed and the mean values were calculated for both groups of participants (SPSS 20.00). The results indicate that Serbian vowels tend to be more open than English vowels (the values of F1 are higher). However, English vowels are more centralised than Serbian vowels and the difference between the Serbian vowels /i/ and /u/ is reflected in their F2 values - /i/ is considerably more centralised than /u/, while in English both vowels are realised with similar F2 values – both tend to be centralised. With regard to the duration, the results reveal that Serbian vowels are longer than English vowels both in short and in long stressed syllables – primarily in short ones, where the difference is up to 52,19 ms.

Suffixation and composition are two independent, productive word-formation processes by means of which the lexical funds of the Serbian and Russian languages respectively are actively built. However, both these languages allow for the combination of these processes, thus rendering such lexemes complex (two-theme) and derivative (suffixational) at the same time. The paper deals with the phenomenon of complex-derivational adjectives in a corpus of Russian and Serbian respectively, inquiries into the stems of words of such a morpheme composition and points to the role of zero-suffix as a formant.

This paper deals with the usage of the infinitive, its meaning and role in various types of structures in which the modern Serbian language prefers to use analytical structures.Таке note of the infinitive in constructions with modal verbs and the verbs mental and cognitive activity, permissive verbs, verbs that refer to the communicative act, verbs of perception, the periphrastic predicates, adjectives and adverbs, but take note of the independent infinitive. The infinitive in these texts has a more extensive use than in the texts of the modern Serbian language.

Most conceptual metaphors that conceptualize musical pitch rely heavily on human perception, images and experience structured through spatial and orientation image schemas such as the schema of VERTICALITY. The paper analyses conceptual metaphors that structure pitch relations in terms of vertical space, thickness and size as they appear in the Croatian musical terminology. The image schemas of VERTICALITY and SIZE are analysed within the conceptual metaphors PITCH RELATIONS ARE RELATIONS IN VERTICAL SPACE and PITCH RELATIONS ARE RELATIONS IN SIZE in order to define to what extent their motivation is embodied and universal, and what can be attributed to cross-cultural and cross-linguistic influences present in the creation and understanding of music terminology in Croatia.

The canonical representation of death as the Grim Reaper is a well-known trope in art. The main aim of this paper is to analyze this trope as it appears in selected instalments of the Italian comics series Dylan Dog. Fauconnier and Turner have extensively discussed its complexity by describing it in terms of the Blending Theory/Conceptual Theory model. As a complex integration of several mental spaces, including a space with an individual human being dying, and a harvest space, the Grim Reaper blend involves metaphoric and metonymic interactions of non-counterpart elements (Fauconnier & Turner 1998). This model will be used as a starting point in the analysis of the corpus consisting of four separate Dylan Dog stories. In the selected issues, the Grim Reaper appears in both the traditional version: a skeleton-like creature dressed in a monk’s robe and holding a scythe, as well as variants in which its appearance gains new and unusual characteristics. It will be demonstrated how the artists' use of the comics medium, with its combination of written text and static visuals, enables certain creative varieties on the classic trope.

The article deals with a public debate on the institute of Jezikovno razsodišče (Linguistic Tribunal) after the Cankarjev dom incident that occurred on 22 March 1982. The first public pan-Yugoslavian debate about the nature of the Slovenian nationalism in 1980s merged the problem with the use of the Slovenian language and that of the position of immigrants who had come to the Socialist Republic of Slovenia from other Yugoslavian republics into a dangerous blend of linguistic, cultural, economic and political disagreement.

The aim of this paper was to examine, identify and define strategies by which it is possible to translate such language varieties as the youth language, as well as their specific local, cultural and temporal linguistic forms (thus also the youth-colored Overall style of a text) into another language. The original text of Marko Vidojković's novel Ples sitnih demona and its German translation Tanz der kleinen Dämonen by translator Milan Andrejić served as the subject of the examination. Contrastive and descriptive methods were chosen as a methodological approach to the text analysis.

This paper presents the results of research based on the prosodic and information structure of sentences in the Serbian language. Furthermore, this paper presents a transition between the formal and the functional approach. It was modeled on a similar research done in the case of Germanic languages. The questionnaires received audio records. Based on those, we concluded that the change in one part of the sentence causes changes in other parts of the sentence. Therefore, accents are relational.

The comparative studies of pronominal forms of address in German and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (up to the 1990s Serbo-Croatian) have so far shown the complexity of this linguistic and social phenomenon (Rathmayr 1992; Betsch/Berger 2009; Schlund 2009). The focus of research in this comparative study lies on pronominal forms used to address patients in authentic medical encounters. In this study I consider and compare the forms of address in medical consultations as well as identify their pragmatic use by contrasting the Bosnian and German data. My research draws on interactional data consisting of 44 audiotaped and transcribed conversations between the Bosnian and German doctors and patients. The data was examined and compared by using a qualitative CA data analysis method. The Bosnian data showed that physicians use different forms to address their patients such as: T-pronoun, V-pronoun, and an alternating use of both pronouns to address the same patient within one single conversation (so-called switching). In the German doctor-patient encounters, the use of the T-pronoun or the alternating use of both forms of address was only observed in case of one physician. Unlike the German patients, the Bosnian patients are being addressed in a more informal way, and depending on the context, certain forms of address go beyond expressing politeness and distance. The comparison of data, based on natural institutional interaction, aims to highlight contemporary tendencies and interactive differences in the system of address of these two European languages.

The paper describes the development of children’s narrative ability by analysing the use of anaphora as a means of creating cohesive discourse. Our study seeks to establish whether the pronouns and ellipses used by 4- and 10-year olds are co-referential with their antecedents, at what age co-referential relations start to manifest within a sentence, and what type of co-referential relations is the most prevalent one. The results have confirmed our hypotheses that children under the age of six do not use their pronouns and ellipses co-referentially with their antecedents, that the presence of co-referential links within a sentence increases with age, and that the dominant type of co-referential relations is subject-subject.

The main aim of this paper is to show some of the difficulties in translating highly polysemous words, using the example of the English verb to run and its translation into Serbian. The given theoretical framework includes different studies, which focus on the importance of context and the problems which emerge from polysemy in the process of translation, as well as on different peculiarities related to the verb to run itself. The paper then provides an overview of the verb’s dictionary meanings collected from relevant dictionaries of English. This is followed by an overview of the parallel translation corpus compiled from two novels in English and their versions translated into Serbian. In the main part of the paper, the authors provide a detailed corpus analysis, which gives us an insight into the complexities translators face in translating polysemous words, whereas the paper’s final section contains discussion and conclusions, which relate this study to some previous studies.

The purpose of the article is to study the specifics of the Bulgarian language’s phonetics and its effect on the formation of Bulgarian singing. The methodology of this work is provided by intonation concept of music represented by I. Liashevsky[7], BorisAsafyev’s follower in Ukraine [10]. And also, by theoretical findings of the scholars D. Gachev[5; 6], M. Remnyovа [11] and T. Popovа[10] who studied the formation and development of the Bulgarian language’s phonetics and natural factors that affected its specifics. Scientific novelty: for the first time, a generalization was made regarding timbral advantages of Bulgarian religious and opera music in connection with phonetics of the Bulgarian language.

The paper analyses the attitudes of citizens of Šabac municipality towards the use of Cyrillic and Latin alphabet. The aim of the research is to determine the attitudes towards the official and unofficial use of the two letters in modern Serbian language. The research is being conducted based on an anonymous survey. The results should show whether one letter has the advantage over the another one as well as what are the parameters that effect the choice of the letter use.

This paper represents comparative analysis of verbal transitivity in English and Croatian, which points out to syntactic-semantic characteristics that are crucial for the identification of object. It also discusses classification of verbs in English and Croatian grammar books. Transitivity is somewhat differently defined in linguistic literature and grammar books, which can cause disagreement related to verb classification. In Croatian grammar books verbal transitivity is related to direct object so this paper examines the possibility of a verb ''transiting'' action to an indirect object as well.
