О двоякой роли письменности Великого княжества Литовского в межславянских языковых контактах

The paper deals with the twofold role of the written language of the Great Duchy of Lithuania in inter-Slavonic, mainly Polish–Russian language contacts, based on the material of diplomatic correspondence of Muscovy. The author summarizes the research data proving that the written language of the Great Duchy of Lithuania played the role of an active mediator in the 15th–17th centuries in Polish–Russian language contacts and it was a source of lexical and semantic borrowings in the Russian written language and in the Polish written language. What is more, the paper examines anew some lexical borrowings from the written language of the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the Russian Chancery language of the 17th century as well as in the Polish language: golosovati /galasovati ‘cry, make a noise; make a hubbub’, navyklyj ‘accustomed to, habitual’ and futor /chutor ‘small settlement; khutor (separated farm)’.

О переводах фразеологизмов с криминально-уголовной окрашенностью в речевой характеристике Остапа Бендера на венгерский и польский язык

This paper claims that idiomatic expressions play a very important role in the protagonist’s speech characteristics in Ilf and Petrov’s novels. Phraseologisms used in a criminal sense are either the author’s neologisms treated in the style of criminal slang or idiomatic expressions corresponding to criminal topics. Two of these phraseologisms clearly belong to criminal slang. Comic effect is reached by the manner of their use in context. As a result of this, they cause even more problems for translation. Apart from these objective moments, the translator’s artistic sense and linguistic sense of humour are also significant factors.

О переводе русской лексемы бакалея на польский язык

The paper discusses the Russian word бакалея and the issues in finding ways to translate it into Polish. The semantics of this Russian word has undergone several changes during the 18th–20th centuries, therefore, when translating, one should take into account the period of time that the Russian text is describing or comes from. It should be noted that there is no Polish lexeme which could be considered as an equivalent translation of the word бакалея used in contemporary texts.

О плане венгерско-польского словаря Гиадора Стрипского

Hiador Sztripszky is known to the Hungarian scientific world as a bibliographer, as an ethnographer and as a literary historian. However, little is known about his linguistic and belletristic works. His interests for scientific work were formed in the Ferenc József University in Kolozsvár and later in the museum of this town. As a student of the Ferenc József University in Kolozsvár he spent the winter semester of 1897/98 in Lemberg (Lviv/Lwów/Lvov). Later he worked as a court interpreter of Russian, Rusyn, Slovak and Polish. Studying Hiador Sztripszky’s works about Ruthenian philology I ended up in Nagyszombat (Trnava) in the Literary archive of the St. Adalbert society where his posthumous papers are kept. In this collection, which unfortunately was kept for a long time under unsatisfactory conditions resulting in the loss of many manuscripts, I found an unfinished plan of a Hungarian-Polish dictionary which he started to write in the 1920s. Being an interpreter he must have felt the practical necessity of such a dictionary and as a philologist he fully understood that it would be a bridge between the two languages and cultures.

Animalisms as the animalistic components of paremiaes play an important role in the semantic codes in Paremiology. The comparative and contrastive analysis of animalisms in the structure of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian paremiaes with the use of a biocentric approach allows us to describe the general and specific features of behaviour and characters that exist in the most widespread paremic images of wild and domestic animals. The animalistic images are typical of: the Polish, Russian and Ukrainian culture. The process of describing each category of animal which takes place in the paremiologic units supports the reconstruction of fragments of a linguistic world‑image and allows us to observe a correlation between such concepts as Animal and Human Being.

The turn of 20th and 21st century was not also the time of activation of the institutional Russian Orthodox Church and the come back of religious values to the everyday life of the society, but also the time of closer acquaintance of the church and science. The linguists recalled the theory of divine genesis of language as the most sustainable and long-lasting one. A natural continuation of this situation was the activation of the linguistic research in linguistics. Slavonic theolignuistics is still a relatively new and not explored branch of linguistics. If we tride to characterize its contemporary state, we should talk about a system of developing research directions. The authors of the given article make an attempt to characterize the main issues of theoliguistic research in contemporary Slavonic linguistics.

ОТРИЦАТЕЛЬНЫЕ СТРУКТУРЫ В ЭВФЕМИСТИЧЕСКОЙ ФУНКЦИИ В РУССКОМ И ПОЛЬСКОМ ЯЗЫКАХ

The paper is devoted to the study of euphemization and as a pragmalinguistic category and also an indirect communication strategy with the ameliorating intent, i.e., as a means of ensuring the communication comfort and eliciting cooperation with the receiver. In the present study, a specific euphemistic device, “euphemization through negation”, in the Polish and Russian linguocultures is analyzed. Explicit and implicit models of euphemistic negation implemented in various structures and at different language levels (words, phrases, and sentences) are distinguished. Comparative analysis of this type of understatement is carried out. Its fundamental structural characteristics are indicated. The analysis reveals significant structural parallels between the Russian and Polish languages with respect to the type of euphemisms under consideration, although certain differences can also be observed. The use of negative structures in the euphemistic function is motivated by the intention to tone down the categorical character of statements.

Паратекстуальные полонизмы в Псалтыри 1683 г. в переводе Аврамия Фирсова

This paper is intented to analyze the lexical and semantic Polonisms identified in “The Translator’s Explication” and “The Preface to the Reader”, which precede the text of the Psalter 1683 in the translation of A. Firsov. The publication deals with 29 lexemes, with 18 of them being lexical borrowings. In two cases, they are not direct borrowings (cf. глупый and читатель), but, most probably, are the result of the stimulating influence of the Polish language. According to the author, 11 words under analysis can be called semantic Polonisms. The paper also defines the role of the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the process of the borrowing of these lexical elements. On the basis of the results of the analysis of the corpus, the author also touches upon the question of the translator’s personality, which has remained debatable up to the present day.

The purpose of this analysis is to present the manner of translating the titles of holy books from Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic by Polish and Lithuanian Tartars and by Polish translators of the Bible and the Quran. It also attempts to define the scope and the nature of relations between the translations of the Bible and the Quran and to present the picture of the books in question on the basis of selected source texts. The source texts vary in terms of form and origin and the vocabulary was excerpted from such materials as historical writings of the Polish and Lithuanian Tartars (the texts were written in Arabic and required transcription and transliteration) as well as translations of the Quran into Polish. The words were also selected from the translations of the Bible (16th-century, 17th-century, and contemporary versions).

The Church Slavonic polemical literature against Latin Christianity is coeval with Slavic literacy itself. Some topoi of this polemical literature continue to survive through the centuries witnessing the attitude of the Slavs towards Western Europe. This paper investigates the connection of two topoi (the legendary story about the filthy pope, Peter the ‘Stammerer’, and the character of the Female Pope) and their historical context in two polemic works deriving from this very tradition: Protos Gavriil of Athos’s letter written to the King of Hungary in 1534 and Mykhajlo Rosvyhuvs’kyj-Andrella’s works from the end of the 17th century.

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of Slavic similes that characterize sound sleep as a part of the linguistic image of the Slavic world. Through the analysis of the figurative structure of similes, the authors demonstrate a great variety of models describing sound sleep in Slavic similes as well as the distinctive and similar ways of expressing the main meanings of similes in different languages. They also demonstrate the semantic differentiation of similes created by the model used in the comparison. Finally, the authors describe several national or cultural specific features of similes in various Slavic languages.

The article represents some of the most famous Slavic manuscripts from the collection of the National Library “St. st. Cyril and Methodius”, received in the early twentieth century, acquired from the archive and the personal library of Professor Marin Drinov, leading Bulgarian scientist researching Bulgarian and South Slavic literature, history and culture and one of the leading lecturers in Kharkov University in Bulgarian history and literature. The author also briefly discusses some of M. Drinov’s papers related to various historical and philological projects on original texts of old Bulgarian literature as well as some written by famous Byzantine writers.
