The role of “Nasha Niva” newspaper in the development of Belarusian literature in modern time cannot be underestimated. In the newspaper texts of past and future authors are published. Galyash Lyevchik wrote triolets and translated them from other languages. The genre of triolet occupied an important place in Ales Pyetrashkyevich’s poetry. The article discusses Galyash Lyevchik’s and Ales Pyetrashkyevich’s triolets. Didactic character of Lyevchik’s poetry and national values of Pyetrashkyevich’s triolets are emphasized.

This paper analyzes several works of Belarusian literature of the first half of the 19th century whose authors discussed the subject of the revival of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which was very popular among the representatives of Belarusian upper class. The author concentrates his attention on verses (author’s and anonymous) of various versions (also unknown) in order to prove the presence of political thought in the literature on the one hand, and to express the conviction that the formation of the Belarusian national idea in the second part of the 19th century was possible thanks to the patriotic feelings based on true attachment to Belarus and the idea of revival of Res Publica.

In the article publicistic writing of an eminent Belarusian writer Zmitrak Byadulya who cooperated with “Nasha Niva” in 1912–1915 is analyzed. His articles expressed the author’s civil and creative-esthetic ideals. Special attention is concentrated on patriotic motifs, his belief that beauty and harmony are the highest ever values. The writer’s conviction that the examination of the nation spiritual heritage, and its history should be the first and foremost task of the society.

In the article the means and techniques of the identification of characters in the novel “Bat’kovshtina” (Fatherland) by Kuz’ma Chorniy are analysed. Nominating characters is one of the most characteristic and widespread technique adopted by the author in the novel. The author considers its various types and changes names when the plot develops. The identification of a character helps to reveal man’s inner world and his relationship with the surrounding world.

The features of creative world in “Hutarki staroho dyeda”, one of the most interesting Belarusian literary works in the second half of the 19th century are analyzed for the first time. Special attention is directed to the language and the form chosen by an unknown author in order to convince peasants and yeomanry to support the January Uprising in Poland in 1863. The conclusions about narrator’s world and its manifestation in the work are drawn.

Yakub Kolas’ poem “New Land” includes his reactions to the events that took place in Belarus when the author lived in Kursk province (until May 1921) and then returned to his homeland (May 1921). The poet deeply experienced foreign domination in the country and its division between Bolshevik Russia and Gentry Poland. Although those dramatic events did not become a central theme in the poem “New Land”, Yakub Kolas appears not just as a local patriot, but as a citizen of the potentially sovereign state – Belarus.

Empress Catherine II ignored Pope Clement XIV’s suppression brief from 1773 and preserved the Belarusian branch of the Society of Jesus. The article draws attention to three important events in the history of this group: the Napoleonic campaign of 1812, restoration of the Order worldwide in 1814 and expulsion from Russia in 1820. These events are documented in sources which are discussed in the paper: an unfinished poem by Jan Mihanowicz, SJ, entitled Podróż XX. Jezuitów z Połocka do północnej Rosji w roku 1812 przed wejściem wojska francuskiego do Białej Rusi (The Trip of Jesuit Priests from Polotsk to Northern Russia in 1812 before the Advance of the French Army to Bela Rus) and the diaries of Jan Galicz, SJ, Wygnaniec z Białej Rusi (An Exile from Bela Rus).

“7 Years in the Clutches of the GPU” by Franciszek Alachnowicz is a very important book in Belarusian literature. Using his own experience Alachnowicz showed how the Gulag and the process of humiliating a man functioned. In the article its author demonstrates the way Alachnowicz returned to his text four times and each time he supplemented it by adding new details. The book was published in Polish in 1935 and in 1937, and in Belarusian in 1937 and in 1942.

The author of the article investigates stable archetypes in Ales Barski’s –Belarusian poet – oeuvre. She points out that all archetypical images are subjective,i.e. created through the author’s perception. Ales Barski addressing images of home, forest, matter that traditionally function in Belarusian literature looks for the originin mythology and folklore. They help to find philosophic-artistic understanding of life, time and creative beginnings. It is emphasized that archetypes perform the function of mental therapy for preoccupied modern mankind.

The author of the article discusses an individual strategy of presenting the image of Dmitry Zhilunovich in the 20th century Belarusian literature (based on a documentary novel “Without an epitaph”). The picture is created by a system of artistic devices which depend on the features of the selected genres. Quotations of archival material, historians’ opinions, friends’ and relatives’ comments and memories built an elementary layer of the text of a documentary.

The language situation in Belarus is atypical in many respects and difficult to grasp theoretically: for its analysis, it is particularly important to consider the internal perspective, i.e. attitudes towards the language. The aim of the study is to develop an interdisciplinary set of analytical instruments for the discursive determination and detailed description of (language) attitudes by integrating a socio-psychological attitude model and a discourse-linguistic topos-based multi-level analysis. This tool can be used to record the contradictory construct of the national language in collective thinking in Belarus and to gain knowledge on how to design language planning activities in the country. The identified discursive argumentation architecture can serve as a reference base when setting up argumentation typologies in relation to non-dominant national languages. The research model created is intended to allow each social discipline to engage in a differentiated examination of attitudes towards all discursively present socially relevant objects in a generalized manner.

The article provides a review of the contests of young writers held by the Belarusian PEN Centre in 2003–2006 and 2009–2012. The aim of the research is to determine the role of these contests in the consolidation of writers in the Belarusian literary process at the beginning of the 21st century. The author proves that for a certain circle of contemporary Belarusian authors, winning contests, as well as participation in events organized for the winners (such as literature seminars, roundtables, presentations of collections published in the outcome of contests), became an important part of their creative and professional biography. The authors themselves value highly the role of contests in their creative formation. The events organized for the winners influenced the formation of knowledge of finalists on the current literary process, created an opportunity to improve literary skills and publication of texts sent to a contest, to give authors a possibility to get to know each other better and, in addition, they resulted in the establishment of a creative and professional cooperation, which continued after the end of the contest. Such contests played an important role in the emergence of an informal youth literary circle, united around the person of Andrej Khadanovich, the main coordinator of contests and contest events, as well as in the formation of a circle of young literary activists around the Belarusian PEN Centre. The results of the research proved that literary contests - as one of the most important forms of consolidation of the environment of the writers – had a significant influence on many processes and phenomena of Belarusian literature of the 21st century.
