„Zielone łąki mej duszy” – nazwy barw w poezji Stanisławy Plewińskiej

This paper explores the range of colour names, their frequency and functions, in the poetry of Stanisława Plewińska from Deszczno, Poland. The research material comprises 46 colour names w 131 text occurrences, representing 13 semantic fields, including one general field and 12 specialised ones. In her poems, Plewińska uses a diverse range of colours. Her poetry is full of all shades of the canonical colour set. She favours colour expressions from the following semantic fields: green (30 occurrences), white (29 occurrences), and black (20 occurrences), which indicates her love for achromatic colour schemes and the colour which is imminent in nature. The analysis also shows that the poet uses: gold (15 occurrences) and blue (7 occurrences). She rarely mentions colours from the semantic field of yellow (4x), grey (4x), silver (4x), red (3x), purple (2x) or brown (1x). The poet never uses the colours from the semantic fields of orange or pink.

In the era of a new sexual revolution marked mainly by coital overstimulation (Melzer 2019: 32) and sensory exploration through practices offering new uses of the body (Breton 2017: 188), the designation of an entity in the mental representa tion that exists in the extralinguistic world seems extremely striking, especially with regard to the construction of anaphoric reference in new media. In this regard, it is important to note that at a time of body worship reinforced by the use of new technologies, various manifestations of love are popularized on social networks as well as on thematic sites that have become essential to strategies of effective marketing. Among these web pages, there are very specific portals, namely those with pornographic content, called X pages, where one can very easily have access to numerous photos and videos allowing users to satisfy different carnal appetites. In deed, it turns out that the immense popularity and, therefore, the effectiveness of these web portals today is not limited only to their visual side, although it is, of course, the image that plays a key role here. Analysis of a particular genre of external pornographic discourse (Paveau 2014: 50) that we propose in this paper is based on a corpus for which we have collected diastratic variational material from non-standard language, namely a hundred information sheets, referred to as erotic biographies of 93 gay and bisexual porn actors, gathered on the French-speaking site https://www.videosxgays.com. The objective of our study is to analyse the functions of sex slang apprehended through anaphoric references, which are ex pressed in multimodal texts with a persuasive vocation, where images, films or photos play a key referential role. In short, we will try to highlight the discursive effects that this linguistic variation seems to produce by exploiting the anaphoric reference in a particularly persuasive context, with its enormous range of specific lexical and stylistic means: periphrases, metonymies, hyperboles, etc.

Evidence from Art (History), perceptual psychology, and (psycho-)linguistics support the claim that in Western culture (or rather within left-to-right writing languages), people depict or visualize more important or salient figures to the left. However, linguistics studies investigating this topic almost exclusively use active sentences with standard Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) syntax as stimuli, where the subject takes the role of an agent. However natural language exhibits much more syntactical variation. To determine if this pattern is also present when the less common syntax is used, we asked native German, Spanish, and Czech speakers (N=300) to draw situations representing ten sentences varying in syntactic structure. These drawings, simplified versions of the mental representation of the situation, provide a glimpse into the conceptualization of the scenes. The spatial placement of the agent figures in the sentences was coded. Results show that although the asymmetrical effect is strong in prototypical SVO sentences, where the subject has the function of an agent and the object a function of a patient, the effect is weaker or disappears in passive sentences, where the subject at the first position is a patient and object on the second position is an agent, as well as in topicalized (OVS) sentences. Furthermore, we found crosslinguistic differences, which suggests that the character of the bias is language-specific. We postulate that placing the agent to the left is only one of the factors influencing spatial placement. The other factor playing an important role is the naming order.

The present paper describes an empirical investigation into an English modal predicate with the auxiliary verb must, the negative particle not and the bare infinitive of the main verb. Typically, the negator not changes the meaning of must from obligation or strong recommendation to forbiddance. This, however, takes place only with the root flavor of must. Epistemic must does not interact with not in this way. The study uses authentic language samples retrieved from the online version of The Corpus of Contemporary American English. The analysis adapts the model of the semantic field of modal expressions developed by Kratzer (1991), and it attempts to find what lies behind the said lack of interaction between must and not. After a scrutiny of the conversational backgrounds influencing the studied modal meanings, the study found that the meaning expressed by a speaker with must not depends on whether the speaker evaluates the propositional circumstances directly or infers from them. Moreover, the study proposes patterns of must-not interfaces with regard to the modal flavor.

This paper dwells on an interesting contrast between Romance (Romanian, Spanish a.o.) and Germanic languages (English, German a.o.) with respect to the syntax and the interpretation of the direct object (DO). One structural difference between these two groups of languages amounts to the fact that the former clitic double (CD) and differentially object mark (DOM) their direct objects while the latter do not. This leads to important interpretive consequences when it comes to phenomena such as Subject-Object binding dependences: Non-CD languages rely on the c-command configuration and surface word order in resolving binding relations (the antecedent must ccommand the element containing the bound pronoun. As a consequence, a natural way for the DO to bind into the Subject is to have it moved to the left, in a preceding, c-commanding position). As will be shown, in CD languages, the word order configuration is not decisive: the direct object may bind the subject without having to precede it at the same time. The paper draws a parametric difference between configurational languages (where binding is closely linked to the c-command configurations and is sensitive to surface word order) and nonconfigurational languages, where the same semantic properties can be derived from the internal structure of the direct object (through its featural specification).

Traditionally, toponyms have played a greater role in historic and geographic and more recently in cultural and ethnologic as well as folklore contexts than in linguistics. Nevertheless, toponymy has an essentially linguistic nature, since its main concern is to identify the particular terms which account for the origins of place names. Although literature has considered the etymology and nature of toponymic sources, names of saints have been most often avoided in approaches to both international and Romanian toponymy. This paper maps focuses on the hagiotoponyms which have survived in the geographical nomenclature since the 14th century to this day and describes them from the formal, structural and distributional perspective, with both synchronic and diachronic references to their present-day Romanian usage.

DEFINING THE CONCEPT OF TOURISM FROM A TERMINOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW – DATABASE

This article outlines the importance of the DATABASE in the process of developing terminological studies. In this regard, it is considered that the source of greatest utility is represented by dictionaries, both specialized and general. Their usefulness lies in the fact that they provide essential terminographic information: through definitions they elucidate concepts, and through lexico-semantic descriptions they clarify the status of the title-term, which are complemented by clarifications brought by stylistic or diastratic marks. In addition, by comparing definitions, confusion and overlap can be avoided. Another source for the DATABASE are legal and administrative acts, such as statutes or the law regulating tourism, both considered by the author.

The paper provides an overview of attitudes (stated explicitly or implied) that are present in the works of Polish linguists who deal with literary studies. The analysis of their meta-scientific statements, research goals and assumptions, is a starting point for the delineation of the functions that literary studies serve within theoretical linguistics. The focus of the paper is a discussion of the five basic uses of literary linguistics that were outlined in the researched material. They are as follows: 1) literature provides data for linguistic research; 2) literature can illustrate an ideal or, at least, representative use of language; 3) literature reveals phenomena that are barely visible or completely obliterated in the standard variety of language; 4) literature is a source of methodological inspiration for the knowledge about language; 5) literature allows us to get acquainted with the most unusual, creative users of the language.

The paper focuses on the following issues: the beginnings of studies on the language of literary authors, dictionaries of literary language, research methods used in the study of the language of literary authors (e.g. the semantic field theory, linguistic worldview theory, statistical methods).

Language acquisition is often more effective and motivational outside the classroom, as it allows the use of the target language in real life situations adding the aspect of relationship building and networking. A good way to improve one’s language skills is through leisure activities as it provides an opportunity to communicate with people with similar interests in a target language environment. However, in Estonia recreational activities are quite segregated. Within an interdisciplinary project course at Tallinn University the project "Unnoticeable Language Learning" (ULL) was carried out in 2019–2022. The main objective of the project was to develop a new language teaching strategie, which can be used to teach and learn Estonian unnoticeably in the course of some gripping recreational activity. The project also aimed to propagate the modern approach to language learning and increase native speakers’ consciousness in supporting language learners and to indicate the importance of non- and informal language learning. Tis article gives an overview of a design study of ULL which aims to articulate the ULL as well as to describe its development and testing. The participants of 2019–2021. ULL projects had to form groups, find a recreational activity to be used to teach Estonian unnoticeably to a target group, then to determine what activities and strategies could be used in order to achieve the objectives. First the participants learned about modern language learning methods to get some inspiration, most of it came from Total Physical Response, Natural Approach and Task-Based Language Learning. Next the activities were planned and tested on the target group, outcomes were documented and analysed. Whereas in the course of the 2022 ULL project the material of previous years was compiled, analysed and the ULL methodology was formulated and introduced via Facebook, seminars and website. The content of the ULL comes from (recreational) activity, it’s best suited to sporting activities (e.g., sports, exercise, hiking), but also works with other activities (e.g., cooking, crafing). Based on ADDIE model (Fink 2013) we formed five main stages in the ULL: 1) Analysing the needs of a target group and possibilities that activity has to offer; 2) Design of activities and language material, it is crucial to design language learning material based on activity, not vice versa, since the focus should be on doing; 3) Developing specific tasks and the use of language, in some cases also preliminary work with the target group, e.g. introducing language material before activities. At this stage, it is important to be aware of the learner's ability to acquire new language material in a certain period of time and the need to repeat the language material often enough. 4) Implementation – engaging activities on which the attention of learners is focused, while tutors are using the chosen language material. The most important keywords here are keeping the recreational activity in focus, visualisation of the language material (commands and presentation of their execution; clarification of the language material by means of physical objects or images) and adequate repetition. Feedback about the acquisition of the language material can be obtained by observing the development of learners (e.g. learners no longer need presentation of the execution of commands, they start using the learned words/phrases), but also in different types of feedback sessions (e.g. showing objects or images and having learners name names of objects, giving them the task of repeating activities on their own and commenting it in Estonian, Kahoot games). (4) Evaluation aims to direct the teacher to develop activities. ULL also assumes that supervisors are ready to make changes if needed: as experience learning ULL must be flexible. However, the tutor should always remember that the attention of learners focus must on the main activity, should under no circumstances shift to the language learning; the learner's ability to acquire new language material is limited; to be acquired unnoticeably language material must be repeated many times; the learner needs a lot of visual support and demonstration. Experiments carried out within the framework of the project showed that the ULL methodology works and can be used successfully in recreational activities by supervisors of recreational activities and coaches.

Modernisation of Terminology Teaching Methods in Interdisciplinary Translation and Interpreting Studies

The Department of Translation and Interpreting in Skopje, North Macedonia offers undergraduate studies where key competences for translators and interpreters are developed. In addition to translation and interpreting competence, students also develop cultural competence, thematic and domain-specific knowledge, digital skills and generic “soft” skills. Knowledge of terminology plays a key role in the training of translators and interpreters. Hence, terminology is taught as a separate course in several different domain at undergraduate level. This paper examines the research question whether the applied terminology teaching approach at the author’s department is effective for terminology learning and skills development in students’ opinion. For that purpose, a research project was implemented entitled “Modernisation of Terminology Teaching Methods at Interdisciplinary Translation and Interpreting Studies” in January 2020 – September 2021, which involved teachers on seven terminological courses. This paper provides an overview of the project activities and results of relevance for translation- and interpreting-oriented terminology teaching and learning. Furthermore, the aim of this paper is to present the results of a survey research on the effectiveness of the terminology teaching approach adopted at the author’s department, thus aiming to contribute to improving the terminology teaching design for translation and interpreting education.

The study introduces OnomOs, a new corpus of Czech texts with annotation of proper names. The corpus was compiled by onomasticians from the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava, and made available by the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. The paper briefly discusses the content and structure of the corpus, the selection of texts for inclusion, and the onomastic-geographical classification of the identified names. The text consists chiefly of three preparatory analyses, which focus on the most frequent surnames, collocations found in Western and Eastern countries in the pre-1989 period, and the declension patterns of three types of onyms. In the summary, further possibilities of onomastic corpus research are presented.

This article explores the use of metonymy in advertising discourse through a detailed analysis of slogans in appliance and electronics advertisements. The influence of metonymy on one’s worldview in the context of commercial advertising was studied based on its contribution to the construction of the images of the object (product or service), subject (seller or manufacturer), and addressee (consumer), as well as to the development of connections between these three elements. The value and relevance of the research lie in the fact that advertising broadcasts ideas about reality and has the potential to influence the consumer’s mindset and behavior. This supports the concept of advertising worldview. It is also important to perceive metonymy as a linguistic and cognitive tool, yet in advertising discourse it is often viewed as a trope. The dynamics of the advertising situation can be defined as follows: the manufacturer/seller offers a solution to the consumer’s problems and promises them joy in the final result, with the product or service acting as a tool to achieve the desired outcome. A number of examples were provided to show that the knowledge about the components of the advertising situation is arranged in the categories of different conceptual structures which determine the type of metonymic transfer. In appliance advertisements, the most frequent metonymic models were found to be as follows: the product’s quality–the product, the result of using the product–the tool employed to achieve the result, describing the situation through the nomination of the stage of turning on the device or achieving the result. It was concluded that metonymy emphasizes the most important characteristics of the product and its role in human life, not only as a problem-solving tool but also as a source of positive emotions and joy, as well as a symbol of a certain lifestyle. Therefore, the metonymic approach is effective in fitting the product into the everyday life of the consumer with respect to their system of values.

The article discusses the communicative and functional intentionality of femininity and masculinity in terms of grammar and semantics. The research aims to analyze the communicative and functional orientation of femininity and masculinity, examining their relationship and/ or lack of correlation with feminine and masculine forms, and their manifestations in discursive practices. The article proposes distinguishing trends in contemporary feminization by diagnosing traditional- normative and gender-sensitive approaches to naming female individuals based on social status, profession, and title. Additionally, it seeks to determine the key factors driving public demand for the use of derived feminine forms. By comparing the functioning of feminine forms in the German language, the article identifi es the main psychological, social, pragmatic, cognitive (including cognitive-behavioral and cultural-historical) factors that burden the national memory with noun forms for the nomination of female individuals in the modern Ukrainian language.
