Христианское кладбище монгольского времени на городище Бурана (по данным архивных документов о раскопках 1886 года)

Author(s): Valerii A. Kolchenko / Language(s): Russian / Publication Year: 0

In 1885, two Christian medieval cemeteries were opened in the north of present-day Kyrgyzstan, in the Chuy Valley. They were identified from the finds of gravestones with Syrian epitaphs. Soon the epitaphs were translated and published by D. Khvolson and S. Slutsky. Archaeological excavations were carried out on the necropolis of Buranа town, in 1885—1886, but the data from these studies were not published. They are stored in the Archive of the RAS Institute of History of Material Culture, among documents of the Imperial Archaeological Committee.Data on the excavations in late 19th century on the medieval cemetery near the settlement of Burana are cited and analyzed in this article. Most of the burials were made in pits. The second largest group is the burial in the pits with niches. All the deceased lay stretched on their backs heading west. The burials contained no grave goods, but sometimes they contain personal adornments or wearable crosses. At the end of the article, the burials from Burana Christian cemetery are compared with the burials from the necropolises of Ak-Beshim, Krasnaya Rechka and Belovodskaya fortresses, also located in the Chuy Valley. By comparing them, we come to conclusion about a break in development of Christianity in the Chuy Valley, and emergence of a new cultural tradition, associated with gravestones with epitaphs, at the beginning of 13th century.

Хрониката на Зигеберт и сведенията му за българите в периода 680 – 820 г.

Хрониката на Зигеберт и сведенията му за българите в периода 680 – 820 г.

Author(s): Stoyan Mihaylov,Pepa Lungarova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 2/2017

Sigeberti Gemblacensis Chronica contains records about the Bulgarians which are unfound in any other medieval sources. In this paper are analyzed the records in Chronica of Sigebert of the period 680 – 820 A.D. The Latin text and its Bulgarian translation are presented simultaneously. In addition to the excerpts concerning the Bulgarians are also included records about the Caliphate and the Byzantium. According to L. C. Bethmann, the publisher of the Chronica of Sigebert, the common thing about these passages is that they originate from a common source – Historia miscella. There are two possible for the origin of these unique records for the Bulgarians contained in Chronica of Sigebert. The first one is that the records known thanks only to Sigebert’s chronicle are his own interpretation to fill the chronological “gaps” in his knowledge about the Bulgarian history. The other hypothesis is that Sigebert, except the version of Anastasius work, has had another unidentified medieval source from which originate the records about the Bulgarians and Byzantium known only by his chronicle.

Хронология амфорных клейм Херсонеса конца IV — начала III вв. до н. э. (исследование комплексов и комплексные исследования)

Author(s): Oleg V. Fateev / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 3/2014

The author studies Chersonesos amphora stamps found in different complexes in the North-Western Crimea, the Lower Dnieper area and the Bosporus, and offers a chronological sequence of 31 magistrates. The analysis of Sinope stamps from these complexes has shown that they refer to the astynomes from magistrate groups IIIB-C and IV. This allows synchronising the stamps of Sinope and Chersonesos types. The absolute chronology of Sinope stamps reveals that the activity of magistrate 31 is to be dated within the time span of 315—280 BC. The catalogue of Chersonesos amphora stamps from the Lower Dnieper area is annexed to the article.

The chronology is based on dates of artefacts and data of the radiocarbon analysis.Period I (late 5th — the middle of 6th century) is marked by subjects of the late Roman time or the early migration period; it is the time when the Pskov long barrows were formed. Period II (middle 6th century — turn of 8th/9th centuries) is the time of consecutive development of this culture. It can be divided into 2 phases: IIА (second half of 6th—7th century) and IIВ (8th century). Хронология и распространение золотых нашивных бляшек в раннескифское время (VIII—VII вв. до н. э.)

Author(s): Anja Hellmuth Kramberger / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 3/2015

As a characteristic of the Scythian cultural-circle the custom can be described to decorate clothes, weapons and horseharness, quivers and vessels of wood and ceramics with small golden appliques. In this paper on the one hand the dating of those Kurgans with golden appliques in the Early Scythian Period (8th—7th century BC) shall be discussed, and on the other hand the distribution of finds in the North Pontic Region and in the neighboring and more distant regions as well. Because it can be established, that identical golden appliques as in kurgans of the Middle Dnieper and the North Caucasus occur also in the Eastern Hallstatt region in grave finds of the late 8th/early 7th century BC, primarily in the Slovenian Doljensko. For some of the findings of gold appliques based on the archaeological findings we can establish that they were placed as ornaments on headdresses, and anthropological studies show that in the majority, these are the burials of women. The golden appliques were apparently reserved for a group of women of a special status. Parallels in the Near East as in the royal tombs at Nimrud/Kalhu can be pointed out. According to inscriptions, they belonged to Assyrian queens and we can interpret the outstanding female burials of the North Pontic region in a similar way as queens or priestesses. Maybe even some of the burials represent the exchange of women to stabilize political alliances.

Хронология культуры Басарабь по данным орнаментации на керамической посуде

Author(s): Evghenii Yu. Zverev / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 3/2002

The objective of this work is to develop the absolute and relative chronology of the Basarabi culture that occupies territories of the North Serbia, Banat, North Bulgaria, most part of Romania, and the territory of the Middle Dniester. The research is founded on the ornamentation of the Basarabi pottery. All ornamental patterns distinguished on a vessel are considered as a closed complex, which can be segregated by induction.Comparison of ornamentation patterns allowed to distinguish three main stages in the evolution of the Basarabi culture.Stage I (early VIII – middle VIII cc. B.C.). The stamp ornamentation predominates.Stage II (second half of VIII – first half of VII cc. B.C.). The stamp and the incised ornamentation are used equally.Stage III (second half of VII c. B.C.). The incised ornamentation is combined with the plastic ornament (the channel art). The research of the ornamentation confirms the opinion of the majority of the researchers that the Basarabi culture «was born» in south-western part of Romania. Three cultural traditions contributed to the process of its formation: Gornea-Kalakaca (incised ornamentation), Insula Banului (stamp ornamentation), Gava-Medias (plastic ornamentation). Gradually, the sources of influence disappeared and the Basarabi began to move towards the east to occupy the territories of the Danube Lowland. Here it experienced another influence from the sites of Tlacene and Babadag III types, manifested in a change of the ornamentation style (use of a combination of the incised with the plastic ornamentation).

The article studies coinage of the ancient Greek town of Tyras, which was situated on the Bank of the Dniester estuary, particularly the urban issues of 4th — first half of the 1st century BC. The аuthors believe that the beginning of coinage in the city falls on the 70s of 4th century BC. The beginning of minting silver and copper coins was carried out independently from each another, and took place around the same time. The early stage of minting ends in late 60s of the 3rd century BC and approximately coincides with the devastation of the Greek rural settlements from the Dniester estuary and around Tyras. Late stage of coinage in Tyras begins a few decades later and is characterized by the emission of exceptionally small copper coin denominations. The repertoire of images on the coins is diverse. Most often depicted are Demeter, Athene and Hermes. Small copper coins had been minted sporadically until about 60s of 1st c. BC. The last cooper issue with a typical image for Mithridates's time — an eagle on bolts of lightning — date to app. 63 BC.

Author(s): Natalia Ju. Limberis,Ivan I. Marchenko / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 4/2018

An important chronological indicator for monuments of Sarmatian time are bronze mirror-pendants with a side handle. The researchers developed a typology and chronology of such mirrors for different regions. In this study we offer a chronology of ornamented mirror-pendants from the Maeotian burials of the Kuban region. Bronze fibula of different types and variants and glass vessels were found together with the mirrors. This made it possible to distinguish 4 narrow chronological groups of mirrors within 50s — 150s AD.

Хронология погребальных памятников Карельского перешейка и Северного Приладожья XI—XV вв.

Author(s): Stanislav V. Belskiy / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5/2014

This paper is devoted to construction of chronology based on studies of changes in the composition of grave goods. In total, 83 assemblages from 18 cemeteries have been analysed. The key notion in this study is that of the “regional (autonomous) system of type-and-chronology” which implies a certain set of types and well-grounded dates of their use defined within a particular chronological range and region. The problem was addressed in four consequent steps: distinguishing of chronologically significant types, determination of their dates, searching for controversies and dating of the complexes, graves and burial grounds on the basis of several independent chronological systems. As a result, the dates of the assemblages were essentially corrected and three basic conclusions proposed:1. Funerary sites of the second half of the 11th, 12th and early 13th century comprise complexes of cremations of reiterated sequence of formation. During this period, a specific and very archaic funerary tradition still existed among the local population.2. Functioning of the so-called “Karelian flat cemeteries of the advanced stage” is limited within the frame of the 13th century. Two sub-periods have been distinguished in the latter: 1220—1290s and 1250—1310s.3. Late stage in functioning of this site in 1290-1400s was also determined.

Хронология раннепалеолитической стоянки Карама (Горный Алтай): факты и проблемы

Author(s): Yaroslav V. Kuzmin,Aleksei Yu. Kazansky / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 1/2019

Factual information and its interpretation regarding the geological age of the Lower Palaeolithic site of Karama (Altai Mountains, Siberia) are considered. It is demonstrated that palynological data do not allow to date this site to earlier than ca. 800 kya; archaeological data are consistent with this estimate. The viewpoint of V. S. Zykin with coauthors, according to which the age of Karama is ca. 1.95—1.77 mya, finds no support in the light of the available geological and paleomagnetic evidence. The so-called “Karama suite” of the Upper Pliocene of Altai Mountains in reality does not exist. For the time being there are no reliable data indicating than the initial peopling of Siberia took place prior to ca. 1 mya.For the time being, there are no reliable data indicating that the initial peopling of Siberia took place prior to ca. 1 mya

Цариград II — поселение раннего неолита на р. Реут в Молдове

Author(s): Serghei I. Covalenco,Sergiu Bodean / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/1999

The settlement of the Early Neolithic Age Tsarigrad II was discovered on the North of Moldavia , in a water-meadow valley of the river Reut. Its weak culture layer was studied on a small area. It was possible to collect there more than 2 thousand flint pieces (coneshaped cores, micropoints and backed bladelets, trapezes, microburins, circular and lateral scrapers, bout-shaped retoucher), as well as some fragments of ceramics with plant elements. According to the main features of flint stock the settlement Tsarigrad II can be refered to monuments of transitional type and could be dated as the earliest stage of Neolithic Age.
