Проблемы идентичности польско-литовско-белорусских татар: исторический и современный аспект

Author(s): Svetlana Chervonnaja / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2017

Research on Tatar minorities in Poland, Latvia and Belarus, conducted according to modern scientific methods, should encompass the subjects’ ethnic and cultural identity, and pay a close attention to their ethnic and cultural origins. Many determinants, affecting Tatars of the Golden Horde resettled to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Republic of the Two Nations (language, territory, military service) in former times, have lost their relevance. The widespread idea that Tatars differ from others only in their religion (Islam), today is being undermined by the evidence drawn from the process of migration. The most important foundations for the ethnic identity of the Polish, Lithuanian and Belarusian Tatars lie in their collective historical memory and contemporary culture (literature, poetry, journalism, humanities), by means of which they nourish the cult of their “self” as the separate ethnic and cultural unit. Barely discernible outlines of that phenomenon of “ourself”, take concrete shapes in Tatar literature and art, supported by documents and historical mythology. This article describes research into written and folk stories concerning that “legendary memory”. The outcome of the research indicates the presence of the dialectics of myth and reality in the images of the “famous past”, plays about “calls from the Grand Steppes”, “common ancestors”, and genetic kinship with the Tatars from the Volga and Ural regions and Crimea.

Prof. Archpriest Stefan Tsankov builds his view of education as something beyond rationalism and pieces of autonomous facts and information. According to him, upbringing is an essential part of education and enlightenment. The author consistently demythologizes pseudo-rationalism, which is particularly popular in post-liberation society.

Author(s): Aleksandar R. Jevtić / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2020

Religious fundamentalism phenomenon is complex social concept that demands interdisciplinary access. Psychological and theological assumptions must be considered in order to get correct understanding. Although going different ways, psychology and theology often come to the same conclusion. They throw new light on religious fundamentalism. In that way, we come to a better understanding and possible suggestions from psychological and theological standpoint. They could give their contribution in prevention of this phenomenon which is often simplified in public.

Author(s): Evliya Çelebi / Language(s): Bulgarian

Evliya Celebi was an enlightened man in a variety of ways who believed in equality, freedom of thought and intellectual debate, and found all of these things present in Islamic societies. Over the course of his travels, he wrote ten volumes detailing his adventures. ‘Seyahatname’ – Book of Travels – is a unique and important text, representing one of the few accounts of the 17th century and the Ottoman world from the perspective of a Muslim. These are not just factual accounts, Evliya had a great imagination and just as important as his journal entries were the imaginative storytelling that ran alongside, elaborating, exaggerating, and fantasizing. Through his stories, we are prompted to think more imaginatively about our own travels and journeys to other cities. This 17th-century Muslim traveler can sometimes seem narrow-minded and yet this same man can stand in St Stephens Cathedral in Vienna and be moved by the music he hears. Sometimes these encounters lead to nothing but sometimes they lead to stories which are so deeply felt, and so universally melodic that they leave echoes which can still be heard and felt today. In 2011, the year which would have been his 400th birthday, Evliya is being paid homage as UNESCO’s Man of the Year.

Пътят – предпочитано място за магически действия

Author(s): Rachko Popov / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2017

According to Wahrig Deustsches Woerterbuch the concept of the “road” refers to a place which you have to walk in order to obtain your wish, to change some life situation in a positive or negative way; there the desired result of the act is achieved. Therefore, in our traditional culture the road is the place where people most often perform all sorts of magical actions including “white” and “black” magic. The crossroad has the same meaning; in a sense, it outlines the model of the horizontal division of the world which finds expression in four main directions – east, west, north, south. The article shows some of the most common “white” magical actions which aim at positive results – mostly various healing practices against diseases such as “gorska mayka” and “vankashna bolest” as well as customs dedicated to the mythical master-guardian of the village such as “Kokosha cherkva” and customs against drought. The article also examines some “black” magical actions aiming at doing harm: “binding” of newlyweds, stealing the milk of somebody else’s cows.

Author(s): Liudprand Liudprand of Cremona / Language(s): Bulgarian

This modern translation of all the surviving literary compositions ascribed to Liudprand, the bishop of Cremona from 962 to 972, offers unrivaled insight into society and culture in western Europe during the "iron century". Since Liudprand enjoyed the favor of the Saxon Roman emperor Otto the Great, and traveled to Constantinople more than once on official business, his narratives also reveal European attitudes toward the Byzantine Empire and the culture of its refined capital city. No other tenth-century writer had such privileged access to the high spheres of power, or such acerbic wit and willingness to articulate critiques of the doings of powerful people. Liudprand's historical texts (the Antapodosis on European events in the first half of the 900s, and his Historia Ottonison the rise to power of Otto the Great) provide a unique view of the recent past against a genuinely European backdrop, unusual in a time of localized cultural horizons. Liudprand's famous satirical description of his misadventures as Ottonian legate at the Byzantine court in 968 is a vital source of information on Byzantine ritual and diplomatic process, as well as a classic of medieval intercultural encounter. Readers interested in medieval European culture, the history of diplomacy, Italian and German medieval history, and the history of Byzantium will find this collection of translated texts rewarding. A full introduction and extensive notes help readers to place Liudprand's writings in context.

Религија као чинилац динамичких процеса у становништву и његових етничких и културно-цивилизацијских обележја

Author(s): Svetlana Radovanović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2004

The importance of the religious factor as the risk, existing in the demographic characters of the population of Serbia has never been separately studied. It is, nevertheless, well known that confession’s norms and learning add to formulation of some kind of thinking which are very important for the reproductive behavior. Statistical data taken from the census, as well as vital statistics, show that the relation with a certain religious system, had an impact upon the actual status of the difference of the fertility and the death rate of the population of Serbia. However, the religious influence on the demography characteristics and changes of the population should be seen as part of complex work of the socio-historical and other factors which are done by the development of the population.

Религијске основе медицинске етике

Религијске основе медицинске етике

Author(s): Goran Stojanović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2020

In this paper, the author attempts to determine the contribution of religion to the emergence of medicine and development of medical ethics. The emergence of medical science in Western and Eastern cultures is explained by means of mythology. The morality of Indian physicians is determined by the Hinduistic concept of karma and the eightfold path of Buddhism, whereas the morality of Chinese physicians is conditioned by the ethics of Confucianism and Daoism. The influence of the Abrahamic religions on the practice of medieval medicine is significant. With the coming of the New Age, medicine has been professionalised and medical ethics secularized. Although some antagonism has been discovered between religion and medicine, they still overlap at certain places. The author finds that the contribution of theology to the emergence of bioethics is unjustly marginalised. The inquiry into the relationship between religion and medicine is constructive for medical ethics in terms of professional education, scientific research, and clinical practice.

Св. Георги Нови Софийски. Разпространение и аспекти на култа

Author(s): Ivanka Gergova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2015

St Georgе the New Martyr of Sofia/Kratovo was one of the first Balkan new martyrs after the Ottoman conquest whose cult was strongly developed and achieved wide dissemination. George was born in Kratovo in 1496–1497. When he was orphaned, left Kratovo and he went to Sofia. The local Muslims tried to draw the young man towards their faith, but he maintained his Christian beliefs. For this reason he was taken to court, condemned to death and burnt at the stake. The clergy and Christians buried them in the cathedral church of St Marina on the 11th February, 1515. From the very outset favourable conditions existed for the creation of a cult to the young mar- tyr. Priest Peio wrote an extensive life, service and prologue about the new martyr. The brief life of St Georgе the New Martyr tells how the relics of the saint were removed from the grave, later they were gradually scattered. There are references to a whole series of caskets containing relics of St George the New Martyr: in the Kremikovski Monastery, in the church of St George in Sofia; in Rila Monastery has five caskets containing parts of the bones of the saint; in the Hilandar Monastery. References to the relics of the Sofia martyr have also been found in the Serbian mon- asteries of Dechani, Studenitsa and Velika Remeta. Initially the cult of St George the New Martyr was local but not limited to Sofia. The service to the saint refers to believers from the surrounding area, who made pilgrim- ages to worship his relics. The earliest image of St George the New Martyr close to the centre of the cult can be found in the narthex of the church at the Bilinsky Monastery, which in my opinion dates from the 16th century. Soon after the establishment of the cult of the newly martyred saint in Sofia, the cult spread to the Hilandar Monastery on Holy Mount Athos. All the main elements required for a cult can be observed here – the presence of relics, texts and images. At the same time St George the New Martyr also became celebrated in his home village of Kratovo. In 1536–1537, Prince Dimitar Pepic of Kra- tovo became a patron of the Toplicki Monastery, in Demir Hisar region, and he paid for the murals in which St George the New Martyr is depicted. In the 17th century, images of the newly martyred saint continued to appear in the Demir Hisar and Kichevo region. The image of St George the New Martyr in the diocese of the Serbi- an Patriarchate of Pech became unusually popular after its restoration in 1557. Over the next decades and into the 17th century, dozens of churches over a large territory brought the image of the newly martyred saint of Sofia to the lay people and clergy. It can be stated with certainty that during the first century after the death of the saint, the majority of his images were created within the territory of the Serbian church. It is usually emphasised that the image of the newly martyred saint is an example to believers and protects them from abandoning the Christian faith. However, this is probably only a part of the truth. Of the large number of newly martyred saints, only this one can be found in Serbian churches and the reason for his choice must be connected with his Serbian nationality. The adherence to the cult of Serbian saints of all categories was an important element of the policy of the Patriarchate of Pech during the Ottoman Empire. The period between the 18th and 19th centuries marked a new stage in the devel-opment of the cult and its territorial spread. During these two centuries the cult underwent a real renaissance in the Bulgarian lands. In Sofia, where the cult had been maintained without interruption during the 19th and the 20th centuries, other traditional folk forms of reverence had developed. The guild of goldsmiths in Sofia, like those in Kratovo, Skopje and Pirot, accepted the newly martyred saint as their patron. From the second half of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century, a large num- ber of murals and icons of St George the New Martyr appeared in Sofia, frequently accompanied of St Nickola the New Martyr of Sofia. However, during this period in the Bulgarian lands the reputation of the martyr of Sofia went beyond the local boundaries of fame and reverence. He was included in the pantheon of those nation- al saints who played an important role in the leading processes of Bulgarian society– for national self-awareness and the struggle for the independence of the Bulgarian church. For a long time in the saint’s birthplace of Kratovo and the region, there was no mention of his worship. This was renewed or activated during the second half of the 19th century.

Свети Домниус – спорни моменти за живота и мощите

Author(s): Stefan Kolev / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2017

Saint Domnius is one of the saints most venerated in Dalmatia. He was patron of the city of Split. His life is surrounded by a number of controversial moments. There are two main thesis. He was born in Antioch but when he was born. According to the first thesis he lived during the time of Saint Peter and was appointed bishop of Dalmatia by him. The second version claims that he lived in the time of Emperor Diocletian (284 – 305) and was martyred at his order. Saint Domnius was buried in Salona. His relics are moved to Split in the beginning of VII c. and placed in the mausoleum of Diocletian which was transformed into cathedral. The text focuses on translation of relics to Rome which took place in the middle of VII c. Last part of the text is about the Festivity of Saint Domnius in Split and the important consecration of the new baroque altar in 1770 when the relics were moved for the last time.
