In addition to its other peculiarities, First Thessalonians features a relatively high number of faith terms. Apart from the paraenetical section, the remaining parts of the letter contain faith terminology in their various literary contexts, primarily in the genitival expression “your faith” in reference to the personal faith of the Thessalonians. This article, an exegetical study based on the principles of epistolary, rhetorical, and semantic approach, offers an analysis of the faith terminology of First Thessalonians, followed by a brief refl ection on faith in light of the exegetical results. Its main conclusion suggests that good reasons exist for viewing Paul’s fi rst writing as a letter of faith.

The article presents two early Christian prophetic writings: the Revelation of John and the Shepherd of Hermas. The books were written at a time when the Church has failed the original prophetic ministry, which we know especially from Paul’s letters and the Didache document. John as the author of Revelation presents himself as a prophetic fi gure and his work is also devoted to prophecy. Johannine literature by itself knows the sayings attributed to Jesus Christ himself, which were in fact uttered by Christian prophets. The work written by Hermas was not admitted to the New Testament canon. It was written in the fi rst half of the second century and represents the last major witness of Christian orthodox divination. It displays the structure of the Church of Rome with branched services and charismata. Of particular interest are its characteristics of false prophets. Later montanist movement sought to revive the old prophetic practice, however, a tendency to ecstasy and excessive austerity obscured its original meaning.

This article presents the relationship between the universal and the local church on the basis of the classical tension of two thinking worlds – Platonic and Aristotelian, which in this theme are represented by Ratzinger and Kasper. The fi rst author demonstrates the ontological preference of the universal church in comparison with to the local church. The second debater rather seeks to promote their equal signifi cance. Both of these views, however, are present in the whole history of the theology from the beginning. Therefore, in this article I am not trying to favour one of them, but to preserve both in the right dialectical tension, where they can complement and correct each other.

Matthias Flacius Illyricus is reputed as one of the most influential Croatian humanists and theologians of the 16th century. Through his numerous works he gave an efficient theological, philosophical, historical, linguistic and educational contribution to the European cultural history. Besides the concise review of Flacius’ life, the article discusses about the truth as Vlacius’ starting point in his deliberation and life in general. Then it focuses on Flacius’ spiritual/theological struggle for freedom of the Church, which contributed greatly to the defeat of the pro-Catholic politics of the emperor Charles V and the survival of the Lutheran tradition of the Reformation in the German countries.

The study The Religious Discourse of God (Munich 1981), conducted by Ingolf Ulrich Dalferth, still remains one of the most significant contributions to the linguistic-philosophical reflection of fundamental-theological questions. Dalferth, through a distinction between general linguistic-analytical aspects of „discourse“ and specific „religious“ aspects of discourse (of God), is confronted with the key question regarding the „intelligibility of the discourse of God“. Thus „religiosity“ is not a question of linguistic competence, but rather of a reference to a situation, which may be characterized as „God’s address“ and „man’s answer“. The experience of this „address“ (or „challenge“) creates the foundational situation of faith. In light of the challenge of speaking of „God“, Dalferth takes up the topos of „eschatological verification“ (John Hick). He does not interpret it as a „transitory hereafter“, but as a verification, which is possible only through God. According to Dalferth, the challenge of truth, as maintained by the Christian discourse of God, is philosophicallly possible, justified by witnessed experience of faith, and, in terms of eschatological verification, well-founded.

The purpose of this article is to consider one of the themes of the Book of Tobit, namely, the contrast of living in a foreign land and the desire for homeland. The model for this theme comes from the Book of Genesis since all the stories from Genesis that are reflected in the Book of Tobit take place outside the land of Israel. Tobit and his children, as well as the patriarchs, are foreigners. Their experiences as "outsiders" include having to live in the danger of death, suffer the loss of all their posessions, go blind, and become childless. The turning point in the story is the empty grave prepared for young Tobit after his wedding night with Sara and his journey home to his parents. The eschatology of the last two chapters of the book crystallizes in the hope of living in God's "house forever" (13,17) which will be the home for all nations (13,13).

The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31 has attracted the attention of listeners and exegetes alike. This article intends to contribute to the ongoing scholarly debate by approaching the text from the narrative standpoint with the primary aim of highlighting the presence of a number of contrasts, some readily identifiable, some less. Proposing an exegesis of the entire text of the parable through the lenses of narrative approach, it seeks to identify the linguistic and conceptual contrasts permeating the text. As a skillful writer, the evangelist has created this parable that constantly revolves around the contrasts between the rich man and Lazarus as a warning to the rich who must heed the message of Moses and the Prophets lest they wind up in the place of torment. They must make sure that the gate does not become a great chasm.

The purpose of this reflection is to offer preliminary, concise information on the administration of the sacraments of inititation to children in its historical juridical development among the Roman Catholics in Slovakia. The article is addressed especially to those who take interest in the issue in question and could possibly pursue the research in this field in future. A secondary goal of this study is to respond to the following query: what notion of initiation governed the administration of the sacraments in the church of the latin rite in Slovakia and what role does this notion occupy in the current understanding of the sacraments in question?

From the beginning the Christians as adherents of a new religion have been confronted by scepticism, criticism, and controversy by pagan world. Unlike the other religious movements of the period, the early Christians decided to conduct a dialogue with pagan thinking. From the second century onward some Christians – apologists - tried to enter discussion with the pagan educated class. The aim of this effort was to refute objections against christianity and convince the pagans with rational arguments about Christian claim on religious truth. In the Works of Christian apologists took place an extensive discussion of early christianity with antique culture, religion, and philosophy.

This article treats the question of salvation in different religions, a topic that poses the greatest challenge for the church in the 21st century. The world has become more and more transparent and the exchange of information between cultures is nowadays very intensive. Christians are obliged to respond to these phenomena. The article first examines the claim that Jesus Christ is the fullness of religion. It then analyses the concept of Jesus’ presence in other religious traditions. Its following subsections take up the documents of the Second Vatican Council and other statements of the Magisterium. The article concludes with a review of the pluralistic views of religion.

The question of salvation lies at the roots of theological inquiry. As one of the theological disciplines, soteriology treats the question of salvation in a systematic manner. Salvation, however, does not simply represent a general object of theological research, as it is also an anthropological category and touches upon the fate of every individual. Within this context, theology developed its doctrine of grace through which it seeks to answer the question of the conditions and forms of salvation for every individual. Hans Urs von Balthasar composed a theological treatise about salvation in the form of socaled dramatic soteriology that includes the rudiments of the doctrine of grace. This article seeks to outline the essential points and principles of Balthasar’s dramatic soteriology.

The Second Vatican Council, that considered itself as a Pastoral Council, remains as a persistent challenge for God’s church in its message. By the Council, the church has become more accessible for the world and entered into a dialogue with it. Therefore, she has wended her way to renewal by two fundamental approaches. By the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church Lumen Gentium she turned ad intra to her origins and roots, whereas by the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes the church pointed out her position ad extra to the contemporary world, to which she as well offered her help (GS 42). She is continuously committed to scrutinise the signs of the times and to interpret them in the light of the Gospel, in order to fulfil her mission. (GS 4). By a short insight of the textual history of the Pastoral Constitution not only its difficult development is intended to be underlined, but also the great reversal of the church towards the world which may be summarized as “gentle revolution” and “revolutionary gentleness”.
