The Sound of Yellow: Kandinsky's yellow colour in von Hartmann's and Schnittke's music

The Sound of Yellow: Kandinsky's yellow colour in von Hartmann's and Schnittke's music

Author(s): Neda Kolić / Language(s): English Issue: 03 (30)/2016

The pioneer of abstraction, Wassily Kandinsky (Васи́лий Васи́льевичКанди́нский, 1866–1944), used musical terms as titles for his paintingswith intention to release them from the themes, considering that musicis “the art which has devoted itself not to the reproduction of naturalphenomena, but rather to the expression of the artist’s soul, in musicalsound”. Through his paintings Kandinsky rethought the principles ofmusic. Not a painting, but an another artistic creation, through whichwe are given a chance to cognize Kandinsky’s comprehension of music,is The Yellow Sound (Der gelbe Klang, 1912), a “composition” for stage. It is the paradigm of Kandinsky’s “true stage-composition”, his totallynew view of theatre that consists of three elements – musical movement, pictorial movement, and physical movement, but interwoventogether in harmony that will trigger inner harmony in a spectator.Music for his scenario was provided by the composer Thomas vonHartmann (Фома́ Алекса́ндрович Га́ртман, 1886–1956), and anothermusical version was written by Alfred Schnittke (Альфре́д Га́рриевичШни́тке, 1934–1998 / Der gelbe Klang, 1974). In Concerning the Spiritualin Art Kandinsky presented his theory of colour through which he explainedhis own (synesthetic) view of yellow colour / sound, particularlyin comparison with blue colour, that was “musicalized” through TheYellow Sound. What kind of yellow and blue tone Kandinsky had inmind, and what nuances of these colours did von Hartmann / Schnittkesee / hear? What musical instrument(s) can produce yellow, i.e. bluecolour? Which music scale / tone / interval has yellow / blue tone(s)?Are we able to perceive all the shades of yellow / blue sound?

Status muzyków dworskich Rzeczypospolitej w końcu XVI i w XVII wieku

Author(s): Alicja Ryczkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01 (24)/2015

Most musicians working at the royal and aristocratic courts enjoyed good status despite the difficult political and economic situation of the Polish Common Wealth in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The height of the status of court musicians depended among others on their place of employment, origin, sex, professional roles and musical specialty. This article focuses on the relationship between the status of the musicians and their origin, sex, workplace and salaries. We compared court musicians’ salaries to demonstrate differences in their material status. The few preserved information about the salaries of the Polish court musicians was analyzed in this study. These were wages of the royal musicians and wages of the musicians employed at the courts of Leon Lew Sapieha, Zamoyscy, prince Dominik Ostrogski-Zasławski and hetman Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski. The results are presented descriptively and in the table and graph.

Muzyka soul – geneza, historia, uwarunkowania społeczno-kulturowe oraz rodzaje inspiracji tym stylem w twórczości rodzimej

Author(s): Michał Jaczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01 (24)/2015

The theme of this study is a historical reconnaissance of soul music, taking into account the global context, with all the social and historical conditions that accompanied the development of the style. The main aim that the author set himself is to find sources of Polish musicians’ inspirations that can be found in American music from the 60s of the twentieth century. The main section of this paper is an attempt to define soul music and the characteristic of the style in a variety of shots – strictly musical, social, political, historical, racial and the general-culture one. The final chapter undertakes the task of showing the results of analysis of native music in terms of its membership to the style. In this section, a very broad meaning of the term ’soul’ has been assumed, which in this context is merely a reflection of the original phenomenon. The author hopes that this study will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge that soul music – both worldwide and in Poland – is an original and valuable style.

In this article the application of Sharia law over the Muslim population of Vardar Macedonia is demonstrated. The application of Sharia Law form the establishment of Ottoman rule until the end of the Second World War is directly related to functioning of state Sharia courts. In this era the Sharia law is part of the positive law. With the change in the historical and political context in the aftermath of First World War, the Sharia court have been included in the Yugoslavian secular state as a structure, relatively independent form the Muslim religious authority, which is based on principles of spiritual hierarchy. Its application have had a positive impact, preserving the Muslim population`s identity. After the Second World War the Sharia court are dismissed. From the legal-normative point of view it is not possible to state that this is Sharia law, because there is a lack of state coercion, which is one of the prerequisites to talk about law. After this point, the essence of sharia ruling is preserved via moral relations and obligations, customs and traditions and the work of the religious institutions as well.

Пътят – предпочитано място за магически действия

Пътят – предпочитано място за магически действия

Author(s): Rachko Popov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

According to Wahrig Deustsches Woerterbuch the concept of the “road” refers to a place which you have to walk in order to obtain your wish, to change some life situation in a positive or negative way; there the desired result of the act is achieved. Therefore, in our traditional culture the road is the place where people most often perform all sorts of magical actions including “white” and “black” magic. The crossroad has the same meaning; in a sense, it outlines the model of the horizontal division of the world which finds expression in four main directions – east, west, north, south. The article shows some of the most common “white” magical actions which aim at positive results – mostly various healing practices against diseases such as “gorska mayka” and “vankashna bolest” as well as customs dedicated to the mythical master-guardian of the village such as “Kokosha cherkva” and customs against drought. The article also examines some “black” magical actions aiming at doing harm: “binding” of newlyweds, stealing the milk of somebody else’s cows.

Пътища за никъде: eвропейски политики за социално включване на ромите

Пътища за никъде: eвропейски политики за социално включване на ромите

Author(s): Elena Marushiakova,Veselin Popov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

In the last years, the “Roma topic” attracts an increasing interest and takes a fopemost place in the public sphere of united Europe; hence, the Roma policies become a significant challenge on national and European level. Before analyzing the contemporary political discourses about the integration and the social inclusion of Roma, however, it is obligatory to know very well the previously existing state policies toward the Gypsies from the time of their arrival in Europe in the Middle Ages until today. Since a great number of the Roma population continues to live in the countries of Eastern Europe, the policies of the states which formed the “socialist camp” after World War II are very important. The analysis of the existing main political discourses about the Gypsies/Roma (and mostly of their results) should be the basis for the analysis of the contemporary national and European discourses about the Roma policies. Based on this, the achievements and the failures of those policies may find explanation and some prognoses about their results (or the lack of such) could be made.

Циганите и изселванията на „българските турци“ (1948–1989)

Циганите и изселванията на „българските турци“ (1948–1989)

Author(s): Plamena Stoyanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

“The Gypsies are our own, domestic problem” is a phrase attributed to the long-term former head of the old communist Bulgarian government, Todor Zhivkov. The government policy towards the Gypsy minority in communist Bulgaria is one of inclusion to the Bulgarian way of life, and its implementation is carefully tailored to the specificities of Bulgaria as a country. It is a little known fact that towards the end of the 1940’s, the Bulgarian Gypsies suddenly turn from a “domestic problem” to something much larger and thus become part of the great confrontation between the two world political camps divided by the Iron Curtain. This takes place during the emigration of the ethnic Bulgarian Turks which starts in 1948, and during which, applications for emigration are filed by both Bulgarian Turks and Muslim Bulgarian Gypsies. It is this latter ethnic minority that becomes the cause for a serious conflict between ‘communist Bulgaria’ and ‘capitalist Turkey’.This paper aims at following the events from the end of the 40’s until end of the 80‘s of the previous century as well as analyzing the consequences of the confrontation between the two neighbouring Balkan countries.

Личното име и езика като културни маркери за (само)идентификация на поколението от смесени семейства

Author(s): Desislava Pileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2017

This research deals with two topics concerning mixed parentage rearing practices in Bulgaria. On the one hand, it is the naming the offspring with regard to the name giver(s) and principles of name-choosing, deriving from parent(s)’ cultural heritage and affected (or not) by the living-in social environment. On the other hand, there is the matter of the non-Bulgarian language acquisition, whose development is a question of micro managing of each of the families (and in many cases of each of the partners). Parents’ decisions, regarding these topics, set the manner in which others look at the mixed offspring, as well as how the children accept themselves as bearers of two cultural backgrounds.
