„Trzecia droga” po 10 latach z perspektywy brytyjskiej i polskiej. Ślepa uliczka czy wyjście ewakuacyjne?

„Trzecia droga” po 10 latach z perspektywy brytyjskiej i polskiej. Ślepa uliczka czy wyjście ewakuacyjne?

Author(s): Krzysztof Zuba / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 26/2010

The concept of ‘The Third Way’ was one of the most significant theoretically and influential politically proposals aimed at a re-definition of the extent and nature of contemporary Social Democracy as an ideological thread and a political force. Over the ten years which have passed since the notion of ‘The Third Way’ was introduced into circulation in politics prove an opportunity to appraise its political ‘feasibility’ on a factual basis. The article points to some of the ideological and theoretical disputes around ‘The Third Way’ and describes, in general terms, the impact of this idea on the politics and public face of the Left. The analysis was carried out based on the example of Great Britain and Poland. Such a selection resulted from the fact that, as far as the debate on the idea of ‘The Third Way’ is concerned, both countries were located at the opposite ends of a ‘centre – periphery axis’. While the idea was born in Britain and was instantly introduced as the doctrine of the ruling Labour Party, it was given a chilly reception in Poland, where it was acknowledged as inappropriate for a state undergoing a transformation of both its social and political system and its economy. The basis thesis of the essay posits that ‘The Third Way’, though it turned out to be a cul-de-sac for Social Democracy as a doctrine, nevertheless provides, as a political strategy, the contemporary political parties’ rational response to the global changes resulting from the re-defined role and the range of significance of this ideology.

Vyprávěná aranžovaná manželství tří generací  v Církvi sjednocení

Author(s): Andrea Beláňová / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 3/2016

Arranged marriages, together with mass weddings, are not the only remarkable practices of the Unification Church. Arranged marriages can also be viewed as the central point of the Unification Church members’ life histories. These biographies are continuously being created, shared, and retold within the group. Currently, three main generations meet in the Unification Church: the first generation, the second generation, and the neophytes. Members of each generation form their life-stories in a slightly different way. However, as I argue in this article, all of these biographies follow a four-stage structure when speaking about the “matching process”, which leads to the creation of a couple. All three of the generations also incorporate several “more powerful actors” in their narratives, who assist with accepting the chosen life partner and help keep the life trajectory going in the expected and accepted direction. Moreover, humor is always present to relieve any drama in the story. For the analysis, interviews from the Czech, the Slovak, and the American communities of the Unification Church were used, together with the author’s field notes and with Unification Church publications.

„Vásárolok, tehát vagyok.” A személy a kapitalizmusban

„Vásárolok, tehát vagyok.” A személy a kapitalizmusban

Author(s): Manfred Prisching / Language(s): Hungarian / Issue: 15/2011

The main aim of the essay is to shed light on how consumption, identity and capitalism relate to each other. According to the premise of the writing, nowadays individuals can be described with the concept of animal consumers, because after the decreasing importance of the great narratives and the ideologies in the second half of the 20th century, it has been consumption, which became the core element on which identifies are constructed. This epoch – second modernity – is characterized by individualization: identity construction mainly revolves around the construction of the uniqueness, distinctiveness and authenticity of the individual. In this context consumption becomes a way of communication: one of the main functions of buying and consuming is to represent individual identities. On the one hand, the second part of the writing focuses on how values change due to the changing role of consumption. On the other hand, it analyzes the social conditions, which are required for the reproduction of such identityconsumption relations. The author uses the notion of „two-dimensional society”, in order to describe contemporary consumer capitalism, where the main motive is conformist individualism.

„Vratit ćemo narodu državu” – desni populizam, nacionalizam i novi izazovi

„Vratit ćemo narodu državu” – desni populizam, nacionalizam i novi izazovi

Author(s): Nenad Miščević / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1/2019

The topic of the paper is right-wing populism, strong and widespread throughout the northern Hemisphere; although the focus is on Croatia and its closest neighborhood. First, the author defines populism and then considers its relationship with its closest phenomena, nationalism, and patriotism. an interesting puzzle about Croatia is the absence of strong, clearly populist parties, despite a strong nationalist orientation in the electoral base; the simplest explanation is that the strongest party, HdZ (Croatian Democratic Union) has managed to take on important topics of right-wing populism while still preserving the form and ideology of parliamentary democracy. How stable this solution is will be seen in the future. the rise of populism has changed the frame of political contestation in our country and in the world; proponents of opposing political standpoints must now rethink the assumptions of their political action and offer new solutions.

„Východní“ vs. „západní“ koncept nacionalismu: Případ Bosny a Hercegoviny

Author(s): Srdjan Prtina / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 1/2005

The breakup of Yugoslavia and especially the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina made many people ask a simple question: Why did this happen? The main goal of this article is to give an answer to this question. More specifically, the article asks: Why did the „eastern“ concept of nationalism prove to be more successful than the „western“ one during the time of social and political changes in Yugoslavia? Although the article focuses on the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, it also touches on some aspects of the historical background. Before explaining the ideological fragmentation in Yugoslavia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the article defines the term nationalism with a special focus on the differentiation between „eastern“ and „western“ versions of this ideology/doctrine.

„Was sind das für Zeiten …?“ Zur Rolle der Literatur in der griechischen Krise

Author(s): Petros Markaris / Language(s): German / Issue: 05-06/2011

Can books be of help in times of a severe crisis? As concerns Greece the answer is “yes” – under two preconditions: First, the authors have to understand the substance and the effects of the crisis. Second, the citizens have to feel the need to take refuge in literature. In fact, literature and fiction can help to ease survival in difficult times. But, the citizens and most authors in Greece are both unwilling to perceive the crisis. Since its beginning, the modern Greek state has been founded on two columns – Europe and the Balkans. This twofold foundation has been generally most productive for fiction, literature and art. Poets, narrators, stage artists and filmmakers have always tried to build a bridge between the Balkans and Europe. Only since the last decades, a “time of false illusions” has begun and Greek intellectuals have forgotten these important roots and have avoided coming to terms with their country’s past. Greece, within its present most disastrous situation, needs a public discussion about the mistakes that have been made. And, Greece and Europe as a whole are in an urgent need to discuss European values instead of rates and figures only. Writers, creative artists, intellectuals and academics have to break the silence and not leave the public stage to economists and politicians.

„Wieczni prezydenci” są do pokonania. Spostrzeżenia po wyborach samorządowych 2014 roku

Author(s): Maciej Drzonek / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 15/2015

From 2002 the mayors of towns in Poland are elected in direct elections every 4 years. In 30 towns with county rights the same persons were chosen in the years 2002—2010. They are so called “everlasting mayors” (multi‑term mayors, incumbents). Before 2014 local elections three of them resigned from the election campaign for re‑election and ten “everlasting mayors” lost the elections. Therefore in thirteen towns with county rights the residents chose new mayors. On the basis of these cases the consideration of some thesis were done. First — the defeated incumbent supported by political parties usually loses elections with nonpartisan candidate; second — the defeated nonpartisan incumbent loses elections with partisan rival.

„Wojna ducha” na Wschodzie. Propaganda i nauka w służbie ruchów narodowych

Author(s): Włodzimierz Borodziej,Maciej Górny / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2018

The article discusses the issue of the political involvement of people of science andculture in Central and Eastern Europe during World War I and in the immediate aftermath. In comparison with the phenomenon of the “war of the spirits” known in the historiography,so far observed mainly in France, Germany and Great Britain, the regional variation of thisphenomenon was characterized by a greater informational value and a stronger relationshipbetween journalistic writing and professional science. In particular, the representatives ofsuch disciplines as physical (racial) anthropology and geography in the service of theirnational movements and governments engaged the whole arsenal of scientific means ofpersuasion: they used the language of a particular science, created coherent and logical, formally correct theories, argued, while maintaining the appropriate forms, with ideologicalopponents. These features of the discourse, among other things, contributed to the viabilityof their scientific theories from World War I, which – unlike analogous creations of WesternEuropean luminaries of art and science – still retain the right to exist in a professionalacademic and journalistic communities in Central and Eastern Europe.

„Współpraca” czy „negatywna interakcja”? Relacje pomię dzy niemieckimi badaniami wschodnimi w Królewcu a polską myślą zachodnią

Author(s): Hans-Christian Petersen / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 02/2011

The academic as well as political analysis of history of German-Polish relations in recent years has been marked by some progress. Even if continuous tackling of the national traditional materials is indeed essentially, the separated examination of ‘German’ or respectively ‘Polish input’ cannot result in substantially clarifying the circumstances. The interdependence between the German East- and Polish West- studies was so deep and continuous to barely grasp their common history without a comparative perspective and without examining the history of these relations. This articles aims at inquiring this relationship exemplified by the „Institut für Ostdeutsche Wirtschaft” (IOW) from Königsberg and „Instytut Bałtycki” from Torun respectively Gdynia in the 1920s. It is also a plea for placing the field of studies in a broader context: The comparative perspective should not be limited to the surface of published texts of the East- and West researchers, but it should rather ask for the conditions, in which these publications had emerged. Thus not only the obvious parallels can be drawn, but also the differences, which prevent the slip from comparison into uniformity.
