The aim of my essay is to describe major tendencies in contemporary Irish prose writing concerned with historical and political issues. The diversity of the themes and attitudes to the past necessitates a classification of the writings into several various groups of novels whereas my analysis of the modes of representing the intratextual universe paves the way for identifying a single literary convention (post-traumatic realism) which is typical of the works under discussion. Many of the quoted authors subscribe to historical revisionism which undermines the received historical narrative in Ireland and questions its aggressively nationalist model of patriotism. The novels by Sebastian Barry, Robert McLiam Wilson, Edna O’Brien or Julia O’Faolain, to name just a few, contest that model by demonstrating that it leads to violence, cultural stagnation and petrifying political divisions both in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. In the age of the epistemological levelling of historiographic discourse and literary fiction the novels discussed in the essay meaningfully contribute to the debate over the Irish nation’s attitude to their own history and the need to conclude the painful chapters of the past connected with the Civil War as well as with the social and religious conflicts of the twentieth century.

As a consequence of the First World War and in the wake of the Treaty of Versailles the Free City of Danzig was established. The image of Danzig identity was created, first of all, by the following ethnic groups: German, Polish and Jewish. Was the Free City of Danzig multicultural or was it German with Polish and Jewish minorities? Did those nationalities live beside each other, did they together, as citizens of Danzig, create a common reality? Is it possible to talk about a uniform culture/identity of Danzig? The aim of this article is an analysis of linguistic image of the world of the citizens of the Free City of Danzig, which has been carried out on the basis of characteristics of the image of relations and cultural differences in the interpretation of Polish community. Yet, the whole image of identity consists of a mosaic of smaller interpretations which, only after being reduced to the lowest common denominator, may give the holistic image of Danzig identity as an image of a common multiple subjectivity. Mutual perception of nationalities inhabiting the area of the Free City of Danzig is the starting point for the discussion on their identity and an attempt to answer the question: did the citizens of Danzig see themselves as one community – exactly the one of Danzig? The analysed research material consists of chosen texts of the local press (in Polish and occasionally in German) concerning socio-cultural and political and informative issues. The Polish Gazeta Gdańska had been published since 1891 as the first Polish Danzig newspaper in Polish. Its first aim was to integrate Polish circles and to defend the rights of the Polish. Danziger Neuesten Nachrichten, published since 1894, was the biggest Danzig conservative newspaper in German which influenced public opinion. In the analysis of the linguistic image of Danzig identities I will consider first of all the following scientific issues after Bartmiński (2007: 20): a) the way of defining common identity i.e. “who we are” – autostereotypes; b) the ways of linguistic perception and definition of the others i.e. “who they are” – heterostereotypes; c) the ways of conceptualization of space and ‘our place in the world’ and the common time in which we live.

Hugh MacDiarmid’s poem ‘Scotland Small?’ (1943) questions the widespread opinion at the time that Scotland was only a small country geographically with ‘nothing but heather!’, showing how ‘marvellously descriptive’ this may be, but also totally ‘incomplete’. The issue addressed in this article is how Scottish letters, starting with the outstanding and multiform writings of the same Hugh MacDiarmid (Christopher Murray Grieve [1892-1978]) and ending with observations of the international significance of such contemporary Scottish poets as Carol Ann Duffy (b. 1955), the first female to become British Poet Laureate, have contributed to the development and diversity of literature far beyond the borders of Scotland. It is also in looking at the achievements of such diverse writers as Muriel Spark, James Kelman and Ian Rankin as well as poets Ian Hamilton Finlay, Edwin Morgan, Jackie Kay, or the present Scottish Poet Laureate Liz Lochhead, among others, that we can see how significant their literary oeuvre is for a better understanding of the modern world. Emphasis is also placed on the fact that although Scotland is undoubtedly a small country geographically, we can never – in reference to the title of this volume – say it is minor.

For over a century, the Bolivian Guaraní people have been subjected to infrahuman treatment which involved practices such as slavery, forced labor and servitude. The new agrarian legislation, aimed at reversing the concentration of the economic and social power in the hands of a small regional elite, represented a shift in a state policy, facilitating the access of indigenous peoples to collective land property and thereby enabling them to break away from the conditions of debt bondage and forced labor. The article examines the current situation of the Guaraní and focuses on the changes and challenges that have been introduced to their way of life due to the implementation of the clearing title process which brought about a partial reconstitution of their territory. It presents the recent data on their struggle to redefine and reconstruct their cultural identity and places emphasis on specific cultural elements considered valuable by the Guaraní society: territorial management, native language, customary law and wider inclusion of women in decision-making structures within the indigenous political organization.

This paper is the first attempt to outline the cultural and sociopolitical history of Nahuatl, one of the most important native languages of America, beginning with preconquest times, focusingon on its role in the Aztec empire, and continuing through the colonial period until the present. We discuss the most important elements of the Nahua writing tradition, its changes under contact with European culture and Spanish, as well as modern threats to its survival. We finish with current prospects for revitalization.
