The aim of my essay is to describe major tendencies in contemporary Irish prose writing concerned with historical and political issues. The diversity of the themes and attitudes to the past necessitates a classification of the writings into several various groups of novels whereas my analysis of the modes of representing the intratextual universe paves the way for identifying a single literary convention (post-traumatic realism) which is typical of the works under discussion. Many of the quoted authors subscribe to historical revisionism which undermines the received historical narrative in Ireland and questions its aggressively nationalist model of patriotism. The novels by Sebastian Barry, Robert McLiam Wilson, Edna O’Brien or Julia O’Faolain, to name just a few, contest that model by demonstrating that it leads to violence, cultural stagnation and petrifying political divisions both in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. In the age of the epistemological levelling of historiographic discourse and literary fiction the novels discussed in the essay meaningfully contribute to the debate over the Irish nation’s attitude to their own history and the need to conclude the painful chapters of the past connected with the Civil War as well as with the social and religious conflicts of the twentieth century.

As a consequence of the First World War and in the wake of the Treaty of Versailles the Free City of Danzig was established. The image of Danzig identity was created, first of all, by the following ethnic groups: German, Polish and Jewish. Was the Free City of Danzig multicultural or was it German with Polish and Jewish minorities? Did those nationalities live beside each other, did they together, as citizens of Danzig, create a common reality? Is it possible to talk about a uniform culture/identity of Danzig? The aim of this article is an analysis of linguistic image of the world of the citizens of the Free City of Danzig, which has been carried out on the basis of characteristics of the image of relations and cultural differences in the interpretation of Polish community. Yet, the whole image of identity consists of a mosaic of smaller interpretations which, only after being reduced to the lowest common denominator, may give the holistic image of Danzig identity as an image of a common multiple subjectivity. Mutual perception of nationalities inhabiting the area of the Free City of Danzig is the starting point for the discussion on their identity and an attempt to answer the question: did the citizens of Danzig see themselves as one community – exactly the one of Danzig? The analysed research material consists of chosen texts of the local press (in Polish and occasionally in German) concerning socio-cultural and political and informative issues. The Polish Gazeta Gdańska had been published since 1891 as the first Polish Danzig newspaper in Polish. Its first aim was to integrate Polish circles and to defend the rights of the Polish. Danziger Neuesten Nachrichten, published since 1894, was the biggest Danzig conservative newspaper in German which influenced public opinion. In the analysis of the linguistic image of Danzig identities I will consider first of all the following scientific issues after Bartmiński (2007: 20): a) the way of defining common identity i.e. “who we are” – autostereotypes; b) the ways of linguistic perception and definition of the others i.e. “who they are” – heterostereotypes; c) the ways of conceptualization of space and ‘our place in the world’ and the common time in which we live.

The paper aims at challenging the unanimous accepted opinion about the people’s complete subordination to the Romanian communist regime during 1980s by considering joke telling as a means of their everyday resistance to Nicolae Ceausescu’s cult of personality. After the introductory remarks regarding the definition of everyday resistance, I will document the interest the former Securitate had in monitoring the spread of the political jokes made at the expanse of Ceausescu. The thematic analysis of the political jokes the jokes indicates Ceausescu’s leadership activity as the main source of the „multilateral” failure of building the Romanian socialism and also of the deprivation and restrictions of all kinds which population had to face during their daily existence. Although it did not pose a direct challenge to the stability of the communist regime, the proliferation of political jokes about Nicolae Ceausescu and implicitly of the critical analysis they contained in brought its own contribution to the gradual weakening of his authority and legitimacy that together with other developments in home politics ignited the population’s opposition to the Romanian communist regime in December 1989.

More than a century ago, aesthetic interest in plastic arts manifested itself for the first time in the Romanian society. Exhibitions and private showings attracted more and more visitors, and occasional chroniclers gradually became genuine art critics. The most appropriate channel for the dissemination of aesthetic principles and ideas proved to be the cultural press through numerous publications, issued especially after 1900. Although the conceptual gap in terms of current aesthetic thinking and European plastic art styles between ordinary Romanian chroniclers and art critics in Western Europe was difficult to bridge in such a short period of time, in the early years of the last century it diminished significantly. This was possible through the publication of the first treaties and articles on aesthetics and its social impact. Romanian art critics quoted and analysed aesthetic concepts and ideas published in prestigious European magazines, such as “Gazette des Beaux-Arts”, “Il Marzocco”, “La Revue du Temps Present” and so on, ideas to which most adhered unconditionally or that others, on the contrary, rejected, in whole or in part. The publications took interest in the development of plastic arts, subsumed under the modern Romanian culture and works on plastic aesthetics, written by theorists and critics, often proved to be divergent. Maybe it was because of this very divergence that the polemic created eventually turned out to be constructive.
