Catholicism as a Cultural Phenomenon in the Time of Globalization. A Polish Perspective

Author(s): Stanisław Obirek / Language(s): English

„On the densely and richly populated Polish intellectual scene, Stanisław Obirek is one of the most prominent and significant, indeed out-standing actors. He stands out from the rest of actors for the role he designed and scripted for himself and has been consistently, over many years, performing; (…) a role that follows no ready-made scripts and lines, a role that Obirek originated and developed (…) and which it have succeeded by now to make an indispensable part of the Polish intellectual life. One should be grateful to the publishers for collecting, (…) the manifold Obirek’s writings on the subjects ranging from the general condition of religion in contemporary world, through the problems related to the Church’s place and role in society (…). and up to the convoluted, intricate and puzzling case of the Polish-Jewish relation, which Stanisław Obirek is not the first Catholic tackling, but perhaps the first scholar attempting to approach it as a Catholic. One should be graleful to the publishers, as what they offer the readers is a genuine treasure-trove of fascinating findings, convincing interpretations and inspiring visions, which will most certainly earn a distinguished and durable place in the ongoing debates in Poland, but also all around our disunited yet struggling to unite planet.” Zygmunt Bauman

Etnos serbski. Czasy patriarchy Arsenija IV Jovanovicia Šakabenty (1726–1748)

Author(s): Piotr Kręzel / Language(s): Polish

The main purpose of this monograph was a multiperspective look at the fate of the Serb population in a time, when patriarch Arsenije IV Jovanović Šakabenta (1726–1748) was its undisputed leader. It was a crucial moment in the history of the Serbs, due to the shift of focus in their spiritual and political life from Peć to Karlovci. For the Serbian community, who did not have its statehood then, it was undoubtedly a particularly significant event. The problems of the Serbs in the first half of the 18th century have been presented against the background of crucial events of the general history of the period. These include, among others, “the Tulip Period” in the Ottoman Empire (1718–1730), the Austrian-Turkish war (1737–1739) and the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748). The monograph is based on the lesser known sources which were collected during archival and library research in Serbia, Austria, Croatia and Russia.

Motywy fauny i flory w literaturze i kulturze. Analecta Literackie i Językowe, tom IX

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

From a scientific point of view, the publication should be assessed as a successful and valuable series of literary and cultural studies on the general phenomenon of mimicry in literature and other areas of art (with numerous references to zoology, botany, geography, ethnology and anthropology). Fauna and flora are treated here as natural phenomena on the one hand, and on the other as a reference point for determining the human condition through the use of proven instruments (exempla, heraldry, bestiaries, “cloister garths” poems collections, etc.). Works on the subject prove that insightful observation of the world of flora and fauna can well have a culture-forming function. In this approach, literary material becomes an exponent of an unconventional view of nature (both native and exotic), an interesting attempt to go beyond the stereotypical perception of animals and plants in various cultural circles. I would describe the methodological assumptions as hermeneutic inquiries within ecological humanities. They come down to searching for various meanings given to fauna and flora in literary works (or, broadly speaking, in cultural references). … In most perspectives, the animal and plant kingdom has been recognized as a phenomenological category, which allowed researchers to focus not only on the view and description, but also on exploring hidden meanings. At the time when more and more attention is being paid to the role of ecology in the life of societies and to the urgent need for respecting its principles, there is also an increasing demand for ecological humanities. This volume meets therefore current social expectations.

Polska bibliografia szekspirowska. 2001-2010

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

W sztukach Szekspira, uniwersalnych i nieustająco aktualnych, ciągle odnajdujemy metafory naszej rzeczywistości. Publikacja prezentuje bogaty dorobek polskich naukowców, pisarzy, artystów i tłumaczy, którzy włączyli się w światową debatę nad twórczością angielskiego dramaturga i poety, wzbogacając ją o własne odczytania i interpretacje.

Sąd nad demoralizacją nieletnich. Konteksty wychowawcze

Author(s): Renata Szczepanik,Agnieszka Jaros,Magdalena Staniaszek / Language(s): Polish

The publication concerns court interventions in the case of juvenile demoralization as well as adolescents who have for various reasons earned the status of juvenile delinquents. It is no coincidence that the authors employ the term “various reasons” which is associated with the very capacious yet vague concept of demoralization. This term is a key category of the Juvenile Delinquents Act which delineates response procedures in cases where an adolescent violates legal, moral and social norms and is raised in conditions which are detrimental to that child’s social development. Many concepts contained in the act are questioned by authors of studies devoted to the analysis of the Polish model of juvenile justice – lawyers, criminologists as well as educators and psychologists. These doubts are discussed in the book and, in addition, this message has been reinforced with data from the authors' own research. The publication adopts several perspectives for the evaluation of the juvenile justice model. However, it is appropriate to explain the absence of strictly legal analyses. Legal themes appear naturally, but they are intentionally left undeveloped and without a deeper examination. It is meant to facilitate the implementation of the aim of the book, which is an attempt to view the relevant law only through the educational functions it should or could perform in relation to children who are at risk of demoralization.

Szkice z metodologii językoznawstwa i filozofii języka

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

These studies deal with the interconnection of linguistics and philosophy of language, concentrating especially on generative grammar (and the work of Noam Chomsky and Ray Jackendoff), and analytic philosophy of language (as developed and influenced by Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell). The first chapter discusses Gorgias’ and his paradoxical trilemma, concentrating on its consequences for delineating different disciplines and pointing to the power and universality of human language. The chapter also mentions progress in philosophy, with the part dealing with paradigms in humanities and social sciences, with special focus on linguistics. The concept of paradigm is seen in terms of its ontological and argumentative potential. Chapter three concentrates on paradigm shift in generative grammar. Chapter four discusses basic concept in contemporary analytic philosophy of language and philosophy of linguistics, whereas chapter five is devoted to philosophical and linguistic developments in pragmatics. Chapter six looks at conceptual semantics and proposes an additional pragmatic level, it also discusses possible elementary categorial semantics for predication. The book concludes with some thoughts on turns in contemporary cognitive-analytic philosophy. The book is furnished with ample notes and references, the accompanying bibliography might serve as a guide to the field.

Techniki i metody relaksacyjne w wychowaniu, edukacji i terapii. Scenariusze pracy z dziećmi i młodzieżą

Author(s): Gabriela Dobińska,Angelika Cieślikowska-Ryczko / Language(s): Polish

Sociocultural changes, technological development, consumerism and a restructuring of the hierarchy of values may generate threats to young people. Educators, teachers and parents are facing many obstacles, dilemmas and educational challenges. The authors of the book offer a truly valuable solution which has not been given proper recognition so far: relaxation-based teaching methods. The publication contains class outlines that can be utilized by professionals in schools, kindergartens, reformatories, orphanages, special care homes; but it can also be a great help to just about anyone willing to practice at home. The unique workshops for children, teenagers and grownups can be separated into three different groups: one covers active neuromuscular relaxation exercises, the second – developing defense mechanisms against stressors, while those in the third teach how we can keep stressors at a safe distance. The exercises suggested in the book allow for the needs and abilities of the target audience, at the same time taking into account the conditions and means within which care and educational institutions operate. The class outlines are ready-made recipes for specific and beneficial activities in pupil or student groups as well as in individual work.

Author(s): Tony Broadwick / Language(s): English,Polish

The collection of Tony Broadwick’s poems contains verses of physical desire, love and sex, and loss, loneliness, alcohol, and pain, all related by cause and effect in human life and all affected by the passage of time, which changes even the most intense passions and emotions. The best of the poems, such as A River and a Bridge give concrete expression to life’s strongest hungers. Cleanth Brooks says in The Well Wrought Urn that the mood of poetry is paradox,1 and many of these poems express the bittersweet longing that drives human actions and accomplishments.

Trade creation and trade diversion under NAFTA. Mexican perspective

Author(s): Justyna Wieloch / Language(s): English

The monograph is devoted to an in-depth and multithreaded analysis of the effects of trade integration of countries with different levels of economic development. It presents the results of research on the profitability of international trade liberalization from the perspective of a less developed country. An example is the North American Free Trade Agreement – unique in the world due to the asymmetry of development of the economies of the participating countries. An assessment of the impact of integration on Mexico was presented based on extensive literature and empirical studies. The publication is one of the first scientific studies in Poland presenting such a comprehensive investigation of economic integration processes on the North American continent.

Uwarunkowania skuteczności działania inkubatorów przedsiębiorczości

Author(s): Krzysztof Świeszczak / Language(s): Polish

Skłonność społeczeństwa do prowadzenia własnej działalności gospodarczej odgrywa istotną rolę w rozwoju krajowych gospodarek.

Jewish self-defense (Special Commission), like other forms of community life of Polish Jews, was a kind of sensation in Poland after World War II. It was created as a result of a wave of murders in the country, “anti-Jewish provocations, assaults on trains and the killing of Jewish passengers and, finally, the culmination of anti-Jewish activity of armed bands”, which was the Kielce pogrom of July 4, 1946. Actually, the Commission operated for a very short time, only until the end of May 1947. In total, 200 guard groups were formed consisting of 2,500 armed people (with approximately 1,000 rifles, 100 automatic weapons, over 1,000 pistols and 120 grenades), providing a round-the-clock protection of close to 390 objects of the following Jewish institutions: committees, child care homes, nursing homes, repatriate homes, schools, canteens, cooperatives, factories employing a larger number of Jews, Jewish parties, kibbutzim. The establishment of special commissions fulfilled its purpose – about 2,000 interventions, at various levels of government, were carried out throughout Poland, as a result of which attacks or provocations were thwarted and the danger was averted. Apart from performing the primary function of self-defense, the commission’s activity had a significant psychological impact. The presence of guards armed with rifles and automatic weapons in the vicinity of Jewish institutions eased somewhat the “prevailing moods of panic” among Jews that had been caused by the Kielce pogrom. It also had a deterrent effect on potential attackers, or neutralized the willingness to show hostile attitudes towards those who identified themselves as Jewish. The commissions also helped to manage the need, which many Jews had had since the beginning of the war, to stand up for the nation undergoing systematic extermination.

Papers presented in the monograph respond to the situation that has arisen in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences relating both to the presence of information technology in all areas of social life and the pervasiveness of its use. Therefore, the publication aims to illustrate the complexity and dynamics of the ongoing virtualization processes of social life and their impact on the functioning of people with disabilities, also considering recent events related to the global epidemic. Individual chapters in the book focus on, among other things: how people with disabilities use the Internet, online education and digital competencies for people with disabilities, virtual civic participation, and social and political activism by people with disabilities. Significant emphasis was also placed on the application dimension of the texts prepared. The publication combines both the features of a scientific paper, based on the individual authors' research, and conclusions in the form of recommendations.

It includes chapters on systemic solutions and policies in disability, the role and significance of institutions in the disability support system, society and communities towards disability and people with disabilities, the interactional dimension of disability, and disability as a personal experience. Hence, the proposed book is intended for representatives of the academic environment, first of all for sociologists and pedagogues interested in the issues of disability, as well as to practitioners involved in the provision of aid and support to this group of social welfare clients and to all those, who have any contacts with the disabled in the everyday lives, especially to relatives and family members of such individuals.
