The Search of Appearance: Poems of Hungary, Second Selection

The Search of Appearance: Poems of Hungary, Second Selection

The Search of Appearance: Poems of Hungary, Second Selection

Author(s): Donald Wesling / Language(s): English / Issue: 04/2012

The Editor’s first set of selections, in the previous issue, emphasized social-political themes. This second set emphasizes art-making intention: hearing and seeing, perceptions shaped into poems, paintings. The earlier set made reference to Wallace Stevens, but this set looks more to the example of William Carlos Williams: the democracy of things seen, importance of feeling-tone of place, the three-tier line Williams developed in books of the forties and fifties – based on the coincidence and non-coincidence of intonational phrases with the step-down line. Looking Away: On not-seeing, and on perception that occurs before cognition in the image of the University cat.

Sufficient Grounds for Suspicion for the Search of a Home as a Safeguard in Croatia

Author(s): Sjepan Gluščić / Language(s): English / Issue: 01/2002

Criminal procedural law is part of the broader criminal law whose task is to determine the relationship between the state and the perpetrators of criminal offences, as well as the position of other citizens who are participants in that relationship. A primary role can be given to the interests of the state or the individual, or a balance between these two interests can be established. In criminal procedural law theory, this problem is known as the conflict between the tendency to efficiency and the tendency to protect the rights of citizens. The state is legitimately requested to prevent and combat crime effectively as well as to respect the fundamental rights of citizens. An imbalance between these two interests, regardless of which side is supported, results in the non-rational criminal procedure. Non-rationality in an extreme degree can be manifested in the complete inability of the state to punish the perpetrators of criminal offences, or in totalitarianism and repression of citizens. The rational criminal procedure, which is our aim, should be based on the balance between the tendency to efficiency and the tendency to protect the rights of citizens. The final result is manifested in the treatment of an individual in a particular criminal justice system.

Is the Search for Universals Incompatible with the Study of Cultural Specificity?

Is the Search for Universals Incompatible with the Study of Cultural Specificity?

Is the Search for Universals Incompatible with the Study of Cultural Specificity?

Author(s): Jean-Jacques Nattiez / Language(s): English / Issue: 01/2012

Keywords: ethnomusicology; anthropology of music; music universals

What it was called “the anthropology of music” finds its roots in two founding papers: The Anthropology of Music by Alan Merriam (1964) and How Musical is Man? by John Blacking (1973). In these two books, the musical structures are designed as a product of the culture. The methodological consequence is: the ethnomusicological investigation should begin from the study of the cultural context. The consequence of this position, quite widely used in the field, was to emphasize the music environment, rather than analyse its structure, with a few notable exceptions (the work of Simha Arom and his team). A fortiori, the research of universals, considered ethnocentric, was regarded in the field as inadmissible. After having proposed a setting up of this situation, the author examines the manner in which the issue of Blacking approaches the link between culture and musical structures, then reconsiders his positions with regard to universals, and possible biological foundations of music. The article ends with a plea for reconciliation, with a view to the ethnomusicology of tomorrow, from the point of view of the anthropology, taking into account the cultural determinations, the comparative study of the musical structures, and the search for universal.

A HISTORICAL EXPOSITION OF MAN’S PERENNIAL SEARCH FOR CERTITUDE

A HISTORICAL EXPOSITION OF MAN’S PERENNIAL SEARCH FOR CERTITUDE

Author(s): Sandra Dragomir / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2012

Keywords: via antiqua; via moderna; rhetorical humanism; sola fide

The age we live in is no less tormented by the search for certitude than all the previous historical attempts to justify and enforce one culture or another. Moreover, our inability to ground any epistemological, theological and moral assumption in the realm of certitude resembles the early modern quest for truth and assurance, being nevertheless “more radical than anything found in our past” (p. xii). Undertaking an inquiry into the past might, in Susan Schreiner’s opinion, satisfy our need to look for solid proofs of objectivity and might give us an insight into the epistemological settlement of men living in times of inconsistency and uncertainty. Judiciary-elected branch power relations and the search for truth

Judiciary-elected branch power relations and the search for truth

Author(s): Cristina Părău / Language(s): English / Issue: 02/2011

Keywords: search for truth; separation of powers; checks and balances; ground due process; co‐equality of powers; jeopardy

This article treats of the search for truth through the medium of the lawcourts in a democratic political context, from the perspective of a political scientist doing research at the intersection between law and politics. It argues that inter‐branch power relations may be typologised and that comparative evaluation of each type of power relations leads to the conclusion that one type best serves the search for truth, not only in the courtroom but even in the chambers of parliament and elsewhere.

Search-centric approach to sustainability of academic marketing

Author(s): Andrej Miklošík / Language(s): English / Issue: 01+02/2016

Keywords: Academic Marketing; Marketing Communication; Search-centric Marketing; Search Engine Marketing; Search Engine Optimisation; Sustainable Marketing

Organisations are looking for the way of optimising the effects of marketing with respect to their sustainability. Three of the most important characteristics of sustainability concept include friendliness to the environment, long-term positive economic effects and respect to the customer by means of non-aggressive marketing based on principles of social responsibility. In this article, the author aims at introducing the concept of search-centric marketing as the marketing approach reflecting changes in consumer behaviour on one hand and the desire for sustainability on the other hand. A cyclic induced effect of sustainability of marketing activities is introduced showing the mutual dependence of addressing a higher number of potential students, higher quality of students and increased level of brand recognition and awareness of a university. The evidence is provided regarding the importance of reaching top results in search engines for relevant keywords to increase effects of marketing activities, improve conversion rate and avoid wasting of resources.

Search and Matching Frictions and Business Cycle Fluctuations in Bulgaria

Author(s): Aleksandar Vasilev / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2016

Keywords: general equilibrium; unemployment and wages; business cycles; fiscal policy

In this paper we investigate the quantitative importance of search and matching frictions in Bulgarian labor markets. This is done by augmenting an otherwise standard real business cycle model a la Long and Plosser (1983) with both a two-sided costly search and fiscal policy. This introduces a strong propagation mechanism that allows the model to capture the business cycles in Bulgaria better than earlier models. The model performs well vis-a-vis data, especially along the labor market dimension, and in addition dominates the market-clearing labor market framework featured in the standard RBC model, e.g Vasilev (2009), as well as the indivisible labor extension used in Hansen (1985).

The search goes on: Parameter effects on the return migration decision

Author(s): Wayne Edwards,Lee Huskey / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: Migration; Harris-Todaro model; unemployment; experimental economics; job search;

In this paper we present an experiment designed to test some of the predictions of the Harris-Todaro model of migration. In particular, we examine determinants of an individual’s return migration decisions. Data issues in the developing world and with migration data in general limit empirical testing of the model. In such a data environment, laboratory experiments can add insight to the theory. We introduce an external opportunity to a traditional labour market search experiment to examine whether it extends search and unemployment in a primary market. Our results generally support the predictions of the model. The experiments predict that the possibility of return, the cost of return, and the existence of trophy wage opportunities in the urban market all reduce the likelihood of return migration.

THE ROLE OF OSINT COLLECTION IN INTELLIGENCE AND THE FUTURE OF INTELLIGENT SEARCH

THE ROLE OF OSINT COLLECTION IN INTELLIGENCE AND THE FUTURE OF INTELLIGENT SEARCH

Author(s): Elena-Adelina Andrei / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: OSINT collection; Internet search tools; Knowledge Graph

In the Intelligence process, OSINT collection has a crucial role. Collection is the key to getting a good and useful product. Regardless of the field of study or preference for defining data - but especially in the Intelligence field - accurate data collection is essential to maintaining the integrity of the analytical product. The world is changing with the advancement of technology. Online sources prove more useful in gathering required intelligence to help analysts to understand some things. Nowadays, the Internet plays an important role in the OSINT collection, maybe the most important, because it provides lots of data that can be spread very fast. Therefore, the Internet is important for the growth of social media, media sharing sites, and their ease of access through various devices. Search engines are also experiencing a permanent development. For that reason, they provide a real support to analysts and their work. For instance, an eloquent example is the new Google service called Knowledge Graph. The Knowledge Graph is a knowledge base used by Google to enhance its search engine's search results with semantic search information gathered from a wide variety of sources. That way, it provides detailed information about a topic in addition to a list of links to other sites. That means users can use the information without having to navigate to other websites and assemble the information themselves.

Author(s): Cuciurhan Mihaela,Patricia Bertea / Language(s): English / Issue: 24/2015

Keywords: search engine marketing; attitude; scepticism; advertising;

The search on the web is an important area of research which, among other aspects, approaches the improvement of pages with results on a search engine (search engine result pages - SERPs), improving both the user's interface and the results' relevance. In order to design the search engine algorithm, it is important to understand how people interact with SERP. To obtain such knowledge, the researchers used techniques such as direct observation, analyses and surveys applied on the users in order to make an analysis of how the user decides to click or not to click on a link.

Author(s): Biljana Mirković,Svetlana Čizmić / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2011

Keywords: unemployment; stress; active job search; Republika Srpska;

Unemployment is a stressful experience since it puts a person in an insecure situation and requires various changes in a person’s everyday life. Active job search is an important predictor of finding a job. Findings on the factors of differences in willingness for an active job search are significant and useful in creating counselling models for the unemployed. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of socio-demographic characteristics on the choice of strategies used to cope with unemployment stress and on willingness to try out various forms of active job search, as well as to determine whether willingness for active job search can be predicted based on particular strategies for coping with stress caused by unemployment. The sample of participants included 304 unemployed persons registered with the Employment Service of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka.

Body check or extrajudicial search – chaos in the Police Act

Body check or extrajudicial search – chaos in the Police Act

Body check or extrajudicial search – chaos in the Police Act

Author(s): Aneta Kamińska-Nawrot / Language(s): English / Issue: 29 (1)/2020

Keywords: body check; search of a person; the Police Act; rights and freedoms of an individual; judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal

A body check is a measure that is usually carried out in the event of a reasonable suspicion of a crime, i.e. when there are grounds to institute criminal proceedings. Moreover, the Police Act has never determined the limits of Police interference with the constitutional rights and freedoms of an individual, nor did it identify any adequate measures to protect the checked persons. These limits were determined by the provisions of the Regulation,1 according to which the Police could not uncover the parts of body covered with clothes. The Constitutional Tribunal recognised these provisions as inconsistent with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland2 and ordered that the definition of a body check, determining the limits of Police interference with the rights and freedoms of an individual and authorising the person subject to a body check to appeal to the court against the decision of the Police, be included in the Police Act. The amendment to the Police Act and other acts,3 which implemented the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal, authorised the person subject to a body check to have the actions of the Police verified by an independent court, but at the same time, it expanded the scope of Police interference with the rights and freedoms of an individual. The legislator of the Police Act and other acts did not remove the one prerequisite that simultaneously triggered a body check and the search of a person, but instead added other prerequisites that broadened the scope of Police measures in this respect. The limits of Police interference with the rights and freedoms of an individual were also expanded to include a check of the oral cavity, nose, ears and hair of the person subject to a body check and, in special cases, also their private body parts, which the Police officer may check visually or manually. The purpose of this paper is to show that the provisions of the amended Police Act and other acts, to a large extent, failed to meet the provisions of the Judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal of 14 December 2017. Its extensive, non-transparent provisions broadened the authority of the Police to arbitrarily determine the limits of interference with the rights and freedoms of an individual, thereby eradicating them. The analysis of the amended Act and its implementing acts, as well as the statement of reasons for the draft Act, confirm the thesis that the amended provisions transformed a body check into an extrajudicial search.

The Procedure for Performing the IT Search - Some Theoretical and Practical Aspects

Author(s): Denisa Barbu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2022

Keywords: IT search; IT search procedure; criminal procedural law;

The term "search" originates from the French language, from the word "perquisition", which generally means a "forage". The legislator clearly provided the forms of the search, i.e. home search, computer search, the search made on a person or vehicle, but it should also be mentioned that, from the point of view of the terminology of this term, the specialized literature noted a difference between the search that has a judicial character, thus being subject to the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as an evidentiary procedure, and the extra judicial activities that are incidental to special rules (for example, during a trip by plane, when people arrive and board and they are searched to avoid the transport of prohibited products or weapons and explosives that may endanger the lives of citizens) (Lorincz, 2015, p. 211).

COMPONENT-BASED ARCHITECTURE OF IOT SEARCH ENGINE

Author(s): Vaidas Giedrimas,Gediminas BAČKIS / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2022

Keywords: Search engine; Internet of Things,; CBSE; Software services;

When the number of IoT devices is growing exponentially, the demand for the search engine of "things" is as big as for the search engine of web pages in the 1990s. Several pilot projects are already running, they differ by their internal architecture and the algorithms for discovery, search, and representation. Early results are as promising as unsettling because they expose the challenges and treats. When web pages are uniform in some extent, the IoT network is highly heterogeneous and dynamic. We argue that because of the nature of IoT, we cannot just reuse the principles of websites search engines. Moreover, the usage of only one algorithm for device discovery or its property search can become inefficient soon. The quality of IoT search can be improved either by using AI and machine learning techniques or dynamically reuse the elements of 2 or more IoT search engines. This paper presents the software architecture of IoT search engines, based on software components, which enable the combination of the advantages of different search engines and their algorithms.

Parallel Backtracking Algorithm for Hamiltonian Path Search

Author(s): Karol Grondzak,Penka Martincova / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2009

Keywords: Hamiltonian Path; Search; Parallel Backtracking; Algorithm;

The speed of calculations is a common problem to tackle in many areas of scientific research and real life. This paper presents an implementation of a parallel backtracking algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on the problem of Hamiltonian Path search. Obtained results exhibit significant improvement of the parallel algorithm over the sequential one. Different aspects of parallelization of backtracking algorithm are studied and presented.
