A Totalitarian Anti-Utopia. This paper investigates one of the strands of totalitarian anti-utopia, which is illustrated in Monica Lovinescu’s novel entitled The Word in Words [Cuvântul din cuvinte], targeting several specific trends of contemporary literature in general, such as the comingling of literary species and the return to the primary reflexive function of fictionality.

“Let me go, if you want me to let you in”: The Ghostly

“Let me go, if you want me to let you in”: The Ghostly Circle in Caryl Phillips‟s The Lost Child

Author(s): Svetlana Stefanova / Language(s): English / Issue: 9/2017

Keywords: Caryl Phillips; The Lost Child; circularity; spectrality; Gothic; Wuthering Heights

The present article argues that the examination of the significance of Gothic motifs in Caryl Phillips‘s The Lost Child (2015) reveals the author‘s approach to unresolved individual and collective traumas that haunt his protagonists, but also his texts. The intricate interaction between the circular structure of the novel and the theme of historical and generational cyclicity requires a special attention to the journey trope and its spatial markers. The title of this essay is borrowed from Chapter III of Emily Brontë‘s Wuthering Heights (1847), The Lost Child’s canonical intertext, in which Catherine‘s ghost appears at the window and begs Lockwood to let her in. Drawing on some concepts developed by Derrida in his Specters of Marx (1993), the essay explores the meaning and function of spectrality and how it relates to circularity and to Phillips‘s commitment to justice, which goes beyond remembering the ―lost children‖ of the past, to actually let them in the present.

Family members under the magnifying glass of the preadolescents

Membrii familiei sub lupa preadolescenților

Author(s): Monica Opriş / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 3/2020

Keywords: family; preadolescents; family crisis;mass-media;

The media debates in Romania on family issues and their definition emphasised the need for multiple perspective analysis. In the present study we have proposed to carry out a research on issues related to the reporting of the preadolescents to the family members considering, on the one hand, the psychological characteristics of this period in human life, and on the other hand, the external influences that constantly devaluate family. The results of the research confirm the existence of a family crisis at the relational level: most students characterize their family members by statements containing factual data and less on issues that take into account the feelings between them.

Translating humour in audiovisual media

Translating humour in audiovisual media

Translating humour in audiovisual media

Author(s): Peter Zolczer / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: humour; translation; audiovisual; dubbing; subtitling;

The article investigates humour translation in audiovisual media concentrating on two modes of audiovisual translation: dubbing and subtitling. The corpus consists of humorous scenes collected from two popular American situational comedies, namely Friends (1994) and The Big Bang Theory (2007). The analysis is based on the comparison of the humorous scenes in their original (English) audio track with their dubbed and subtitled Hungarian versions. Only those humorous scenes were selected and analysed in which the humorous load is mediated by language- and/or culture-specific humorous elements. The study focuses on the differences between the scenes’ humorous load in their original, dubbed, and subtitled versions. The methodology of the research is based on Juan José Martínez-Sierra’s case study “Translating Audiovisual Humour” (2009). The results show that in certain cases there is a difference between the humorous load in the dubbed and subtitled versions which can be traced back to the differences between the constraints of dubbing and subtitling.

Products of Counterfactual Imagination: The Healing Life of Literature

Author(s): Adriana Carolina Bulz / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: memory; nostalgia; family history; re-writing; imagination;

My article investigates two of the latter volumes by Romanian author Monica Pillat, Invitație la vis (An Invitation to Dream, 2014), and Croitorul de cărți (The Book Tailor, 2019), in which the literary experience elevates and transcends life itself, as a form of rewriting/healing the past and, maybe, of projecting one’s dreams into the future. It relies on criticism of two stories from the respective volumes, which investigates the sites of memory, such as the family mansion, which is the central piece around which the fantasy world woven by the author gravitates. Since Monica Pillat descends from a whole line of literary masters, her gift for writing is in fact a form of recuperating and also compensating for the family past, in which especially her father (Dinu Pillat) was very much afflicted by political persecution during Communist times. I will dwell upon the less factual connection between life and literature - that of a mutual mirroring and influencing - in the attempt to prove that the experience of writing can make up for the losses encountered in reality. In this sense, being a literary author may offer one the chance of re -inventing one’s self (or imaginatively amending the life of your loved ones) and - for Monica Pillat - it certainly offers the greatest reward of all: a continual dwelling inside the family lineage, in the company of the kindred spirits that have guided and protected her since she was born.

Ecaterina Bălăcioiu-Lovinescu (1887 – 1960)

Author(s): Dumitru Lăcătușu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 3-4/2022

Keywords: Ecaterina Bălăcioiu-Lovinescu; Monica Lovinescu; communist regime; Romanian political prisoners;

This dictionary entry explores the biography of Ecaterina Bălăcioiu-Lovinescu, Romanian intellectual and political inmate during the communist regime. The voice highlights the following ideas about her biography: her persecution by the communist authorities and her refusal to collaborate with the Securitate after she was arrested. Like other Romanian political prisoners, Ecaterina Bălăcioiu-Lovinescu, who died in prison, was buried in an unknown place near the former Văcărești penitentiary.
