The Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. Reflections on Its History and Present

Filozofická fakulta Masarykovy univerzity. Pohledy na dějiny a současnost

Author(s): Lukáš Fasora,Jiří Hanuš / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Faculty of Arts; Masaryk University; Higher Education; Czech University; History of Education; Inter-war era;

The Faculty of Arts is one of the four founding faculties at Masaryk Universityin Brno, its creation linked to the act which established the university in 1919.Due to difficulties with furnishing and staffing, teaching did not commence until 1921 and throughout the remainder of the interwar period the school was dogged by serious material difficulties linked with the absence of suitable buildings for teaching, as a result of which the school almost fell victim to the government’s economic interventions into university education on two occasions. Despite numerous problems in the inter-war period the Faculty of Arts was able to gradually build a tradition of quality teaching and science renowned in Central Europe, which was supported on the one hand by the founding generation of professors, drawn partly from Prague’s Charles University and partly from the ranks of teachers from Brno’s Technical College, and on the other hand second-generation teachers already emerging from the ranks of graduates of what was then the only Moravian university. From the beginning, Masaryk University’s position as the “second” Czech university, standing in the shadow of both Prague’s metropolitan university and the politically important sole Slovakian university in Bratislava, fundamentally affected its development in specific ways. In the Faculty ofArts in particular some special characteristics, both negative and positive, sharply manifested themselves. The negative doubtless included the long‑term underestimation of the school’s material needs, so that, especially in the critically overburdened campus of the Arts Faculty, where the rector’s office was also located for a long time, the conditions for teaching were quite miserable and unfit for pedagogical and scientific work.

Practical Notebook of French Syntax

Cahier pratique de syntaxe française

Author(s): Christophe Cusimano / Language(s): French

Keywords: French language; French syntax; practical notebook; syntax exercises; sentences; linguistics; sentence analysis;

This handbook introduces some knotty notions and syntactic structures in the immediate constituents theory from a didactic point of view. With the help of 40 exercises, each of them with solution, the author increases the reader awareness of one or two problems before submitting a sentence for analysis. The technical tip of turning around the table of commutation tests in order to change it into syntactical tree is also a significant didactic breakthrough: it enables demonstration which is the base of the debate on the accuracy of analysis. Then the author produces all the critical thinking elements. So here is a small handbook without theoretical advance purpose, but it should be of use for all the students in linguistics.

Keywords: Schools; education; organizational learning; elementary schools; Czech Republic; management; process of education;

They arrive at a variety of important findings about the processes of organizational learning, leadership, and management. The subsequent parts of the publication give information on the content focus and structural arrangement of organizational learning in schools, its actors, and the ways of support. Special attention is paid to supporting factors of organizational learning and some moral dilemmas related to the leadership and management of the processes of organizational learning in schools.

Games of Life. Czech Reproductive Biomedicine. Sociological Perspectives

Author(s): Eva Šlesingerová,Lenka Slepičková,Iva Šmídová / Language(s): English

Keywords: Biopower; Biomedicine; Czech Republic; Biopolitics; Assisted Reproduction; Childbirth;

Reproductive medicine is an attractive field for sociological inquiry for several reasons. Seemingly “natural” processes tackled by it, such as sexuality, conception or childbirth, are targets of biopower in every society as an attempt to tame life to fit within the borders outlined by these societies (Foucault 1999). They are a subject for fight over their definition, knowing and naming, delimiting normality, desirability and merit. Reproductive medicine is approached here as a representative of the three typical are as where current biopower/biopolitics is manifest, as identified in 2006 by Paul Rabinow and Nikolas Rose in their text Biopower Today, the others being genomics and the reconstituted idea of race (Rabinow and Rose 2006).

Music-Literary Dictionary. Musical Works Inspired by Literary Art. Twentieth Century Composers. The Third Part of a Dictionary Trilogy

Hudebně-literární slovník. Hudební díla inspirovaná slovesným uměním. Skladatelé 20. století. III. díl slovníkové trilogie

Author(s): Vladimír Spousta / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Musical-literary dictionary; Musical works; Verbal art; 20th century composers; artificial music; non-artificial music; tonal music; atonal music; electro-acoustic music; jazz; literary art; folk literature;

The third part of a Musical-Literary Dictionary builds on the first two parts of the Dictionary dealing with international and Czech composers which were published by the Masaryk University Press in 2011. The third part of the Dictionary concludes a monumental dictionary trilogy. This work deals with literary production of the 20th century composers and registers only their musicial compositions which are linked to literary (exceptionally also visual) art. The link could have a form of unspecified literary, visual or musical inspiration. In the most cases the connectionis about a common idea, theme, content or text of a literary work. The Dictionary designed this way brings a new and original point of view to the 20th century artificial and non-artificial musical production in a worldwide context into Czech and world musicial and literary lexicography. The book includes 4,205 musicial works of 533 Czech and international composers living from 1930 to the present and, on the other hand, it includes also 1,995 literary authors whose literary works have inspired the birth of musicial works. Furthermore the Dictionary pays attention to folk literature and its display in musicial production and also to musical works through which their authors have paid tribute to important artists of the past.

Divorce and the Changes of Reproduction Strategies

Rozvod a změny reprodukčních strategií

Author(s): Petr Fučík / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Marriage; divorce culture; intimate relationship; social reproduction; reproduction strategy; one-parent families; step-families; divorced families;

Among others, the modernization of intimate relationships also offers the possibility to step out from an unsatisfactory marriage. The prevalence of divorce culture is a relatively new phenomenon gaining its importance during the recent decades and having potential consequences on the social reproduction mechanisms. The theoretical question on the most general level is phrased as follows: how will the mechanisms of social reproduction differ when the possibility of legal separation creates a growing category of people forced to redefine their life courses and reproduction strategies? What new reproduction mechanisms will emerge when a considerable proportion of children are socialized in one-parent families or step-families? The empirical enquiry is driven by the logic of sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The first part of the analysis complies with the quantitative mode of description by means of secondary data analysis, and focuses on the description of various aspects of post-divorce situation in the Czech Republic such as the economic situation of divorced people, maternal trajectories of women experiencing divorce and their re-partnering. At the same time, it explores the effectiveness of the intergenerational transmission of educational attainment in divorced families compared with normal intact ones. Given the research approach based on the mixed-methods design, the qualitative study helps us to deepen the interpretation of the patterns found in the previous quantitative analysis. At this stage, we enrich our data with qualitative in-depth interviews. In accordance with the logic of grounded theory, we come to the end of the work with a theoretical model that tries to explain the changes in the reproduction strategies through the creation of a specific type of the individualization habitus and re-constructive components of the reproduction strategies.

Author(s): Petra Vejvodová / Language(s): English

Keywords: Transnationalization Theory; National Socialism; Czechoslovak National Socialism; Neo-Nazism; Neo-Nazi movement; Identity;

On the most general level, it is evident that transnational activities and structures play a decisive role in our current globalized world. Accordingly, research focused on the transnational level has gained importance in the fields of political science and sociology. The past two decades of social science research have seen a number of publications written in the area. They include Císař 2004; Kolářová 2009; Della Porta, Tarrow 2005; Imig, Tarrow 1999, 2001; Snow, Benford 1999; Tarrow 1998; and Tarrow 2005. It is noteworthy that each of these researchers has chosen to examine transnationalism in the context of social movements.

Czech Parties and their Candidates: The Case of Elections to the Chamber of Deputies in 2010

České strany a jejich kandidáti: Případ voleb do Poslanecké sněmovny v roce 2010

Author(s): Peter Spáč / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Czech Republic; Political parties; Government; candidate nomination; Electoral policy; Political systems;

Elections constitute a central component of all democratic political systems. Conventionally, the institute of elections is seen is an instrument of conferring and renewing political legitimacy of state officials, as well as a vehicle for expressing citizens’ preferences regarding the future of their country or some other territorial entity. Their particular shape is specified by electoral systems which translate the voters’ political will into the make-up of the elected body (typically parliaments). On the face of it, such a definition emphasises the “technical” aspect of distributing seats among successful parties; we cannot however ignore the fact that elections have an important personal dimension. Their point is always also to select particular people to elected offices and functions.So understood, elections simultaneously represent the outcome of a distinct organisational process that temporally precedes them. Selection of candidates constitutes an inseparable part of the pre-election period, together with formulating election programmes, planning the election campaign and raising funds for it. As a topic of scholarly research in political science, candidate selection (also preselection) has been gradually gaining ground, and both theoretical and empirical resources have been continually expanded. However, whereas international trends are apparent in this regard, the Czech political-scientific community still treats preselection as a topic of secondary importance. This fact underlines the relevance of the present book, which aims to provide an in-depth inquiry into this issue in the Czech context.

Also, this publication suggests and verifies methodology of interpretation results of the FS methods. For start was employed multidimensional linear regression, succeeded by clustering companies according to the factors identified by FS into homogenous groups, dividing them into quartiles based on their CFP and identifying similar values of the factors. This way was captured the non-linearity in the data.

Mothers of Courage: Lesbian Families in a Late Modern Society

Matky kuráže: Lesbické rodiny v pozdně moderní společnosti

Author(s): Kateřina Nedbálková / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Modern society; gay families; lesbian families; theory of family; theory of sexuality; gay and lesbian parenting; Czech Republic; ethnography;

The book deals with the topic of gay and lesbian families. It offers a critical review of selected sociological theories related to family and sexuality. It also summarises the findings of foreign research that has been examining gay and lesbian parenting since the 1960s. The heart of the book is a four-year ethnographic study based on interviews and observations in Czech lesbian families. The book does not answer the question whether lesbian parenting is good or bad. Instead, it puts it in the context of a more general discussion about the family and its transformations in a late modern society.
